Protecting your World of Warcraft gold starts with protecting the Battle.net account that holds it. Use a unique password, secure the email address tied to the account, add Blizzard’s Authenticator in the free Battle.net Mobile App, and treat every unsolicited login request or link as suspicious. Inside the game, keep exchanges in Blizzard’s built-in Trade window, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail systems, and verify the amount and terms before accepting.
Do not share account access, buy gold or leveling from outside providers, or hand over items for an informal promise. If the account is taken, recover it first, secure the computer, then contact Blizzard Support. If another player simply takes gold or materials in a trade scam, Blizzard’s current guidance says restoration is not guaranteed and that it may act against an account only when it verifies a scam.

What account theft can cost you
A stolen account is not limited to losing access to your character. Blizzard says attackers may strip valuable equipment and materials, then use the account in gold-selling operations. That can leave you without your inventory, your currency, or control of the account itself. Blizzard’s account-security guidance describes these outcomes in Account Security and You (Yes, You).
There are two different problems to separate:
- Account compromise: someone obtains your login or access to your computer and enters the account.
- Trade scam: you voluntarily confirm an in-game exchange, often after an informal promise that the other player does not honor.
The response and possible remedy differ. Secure a compromised account immediately. For a completed trade scam, do not assume that a support ticket will return the gold or items.

Secure Battle.net before protecting your gold
Use a password that exists nowhere else
Create a strong password used only for Battle.net. Reusing the same password on an email, forum, addon site, or another game gives an attacker a second route into your account. Blizzard specifically recommends a unique Battle.net password and, where practical, a unique email address for Battle.net in its current account-security guidance: Defend Azeroth When You Defend Your Account.
A unique password does not make phishing harmless: an attacker can still trick you into entering it on a fake page. It does, however, prevent a breach on an unrelated service from automatically becoming a Battle.net breach.
Protect the email address linked to Battle.net
Your email account can be used to reset passwords or intercept security notices. Give it a separate password and turn on that provider’s two-factor authentication if the option exists. A unique email address used for Battle.net adds another layer because credentials exposed elsewhere are less likely to unlock it.
Recommended Free Tools
Secure the email account before changing Battle.net details after a compromise. Otherwise, an intruder who still controls the mailbox may undo your changes.
Add Blizzard’s Authenticator
Blizzard’s current guidance calls for adding the Battle.net Authenticator through the free Battle.net Mobile App. The Authenticator is a first-party control for Battle.net sign-ins; it is not a product you need to buy. Blizzard’s account-hacked instructions and account-security material both identify it as part of securing the account:
Install the official mobile app, add the Authenticator to the Battle.net account, and keep the phone available when you sign in. If you lose access to the enrolled phone or cannot complete a sign-in, use Blizzard’s Account Recovery process rather than giving your credentials to another person.

Consider Phone Notifications as another signal
Blizzard’s account-security guidance also lists Phone Notifications. They are an additional account-protection option, while email two-factor authentication protects the linked mailbox. The sources do not establish a complete, permanent feature comparison between these options, and Blizzard can change prompts or recovery requirements. Use the controls that are available in your account and keep the recovery information current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Protection layer | What it protects | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Unique Battle.net password | The game-account login | Never reuse it on another site or share it with a guildmate, friend, or service provider. |
| Battle.net Authenticator | Battle.net sign-in verification | Available in the free Battle.net Mobile App; account recovery is the route if access is lost. |
| Email two-factor authentication | The mailbox that can receive resets and alerts | Enable it through your email provider when offered. |
| Phone Notifications | An additional Battle.net account-security signal | Exact current behavior and recovery details can change; check Blizzard’s account settings and support instructions. |
Keep your computer and addons from exposing the login
Account security can fail even when your password is strong. Blizzard advises keeping your browser and security software current. Install addons only from sources you trust, and never run an executable file as part of an addon installation. An addon that asks you to launch an installer or unrelated program is not following the normal in-game addon model.
If you suspect an addon or download infected the computer, stop signing in from that machine. Run a security scan, remove the suspected software, and change the Battle.net password after the computer is clean. Changing the password first, while malware remains active, can simply hand the new password to the attacker.
Do not log in on another person’s computer unless you can verify that it is secure and that no browser will save your credentials. Blizzard’s account-hacked guidance identifies malicious websites, addons, password reuse, phishing, gold sellers, and account sharing as attack methods to review.
Recognize phishing before it captures your credentials
Blizzard describes phishing as websites, email, and in-game communication that impersonate official correspondence to obtain login details or install malware. A message can look professional and still be fraudulent. The sender name, logo, or a familiar-looking login screen is not proof that it is from Blizzard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Warning signs
- A message promises free gold, exclusive loot, a rare mount, or another reward in exchange for signing in.
- An email or whisper threatens immediate suspension unless you “verify” your account through a link.
- A site address is misspelled, uses an unexpected domain, or appears only after you click a message.
- Someone asks for your password, authenticator code, email access, or approval of a login you did not start.
- A download claims to be an addon but includes an executable installer.
Verify without following the lure
Do not enter credentials in response to an unsolicited request. Instead, open a new browser window and type Blizzard’s address yourself or use a bookmark you created previously. Check the complete address in the browser bar before signing in. If a message says your account is at risk, investigate through the official account-management or support pages rather than through its embedded link.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Blizzard’s security guidance covers impersonation through websites, email, and in-game messages. Treat an unexpected authenticator prompt the same way: deny it and investigate, because approving a request you did not initiate can help an attacker complete a login.
Do not give attackers a service-provider shortcut
Never share account access
Do not lend the account to friends, guildmates, strangers, or a leveling provider. Sharing means you cannot reliably tell who changed a setting, moved an item, or exposed the password. It also gives a scammer a legitimate-looking path into the account that may be difficult to distinguish from your own activity.
Avoid outside gold and leveling sellers
Blizzard warns that non-Blizzard gold sellers and leveling services can steal the Battle.net accounts and credit cards of buyers. A cheap offer can therefore create both an account-security problem and a payment-security problem. Do not provide login details to a seller, and do not install a program that claims to automate leveling or deliver currency.

That post is dated November 9, 2018, so use it as historical explanation rather than a promise about present enforcement; current support articles take priority.
Use the game’s supported transaction systems
For ordinary player-to-player exchanges, stay inside the systems Blizzard provides: the in-game Trade window, the Auction House, and C.O.D. Mail where appropriate. Blizzard’s current Trade Scams guidance says to double-check Auction House prices and the terms shown before accepting.
| Situation | Safer built-in method | Check before confirming |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate exchange of gold and items | In-game Trade window | Both sides of the window show the exact items and gold you intend to exchange; recheck after the other player changes anything. |
| Buying or selling a listed item | Auction House | Unit price, total price, quantity, and the item’s exact name; do not click a near-match because the price looked familiar. |
| Sending an item for payment on delivery | C.O.D. Mail | Recipient, item, and C.O.D. amount before sending; make sure the amount matches the agreement. |
| Paying someone to perform a dungeon, achievement, or PvP service | No protected transaction is established by the sources | Blizzard’s 2018 forum guidance calls these “services for gold” unsupported and says losses are at the player’s risk. |
What to refuse immediately
- Requests for items, gold, or guild-bank permissions from a person you do not trust.
- “Hold this for me” arrangements that require you to hand over valuables before receiving payment.
- Requests to buy a game code or item code with in-game currency; Blizzard specifically warns against this pattern.
- Any claim that the person is a Blizzard employee and needs your gold or items. Blizzard’s support article states: “Blizzard employees will never ask you for items or gold.”
When an agreement depends on a promise outside the Trade window, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail, you lose the built-in confirmation that shows what is actually being transferred. A friendly conversation, guild rank, or long history with a player is not a substitute for checking the transaction itself.

Handle common scam setups deliberately
Crafting and material exchanges
A common complaint in Blizzard’s support guidance is giving materials to another player for a craft, then having that player disconnect or put the owner on ignore. Do not hand over materials on the expectation that a later payment will arrive. If the game’s transaction interface cannot show the item and compensation together, treat the arrangement as unsupported and decline it.
Price and quantity confusion
Scammers can rely on a buyer reading a familiar-looking number too quickly. In the Auction House, inspect the exact item, stack size, unit price, and total. In a direct trade, pause whenever the other player changes an item or gold amount; read the final state again before accepting.
Guild-bank and trusted-player requests
Guild membership does not make a request safe. Blizzard advises not giving guild-bank permissions or valuables to anyone you do not trust. Restrict permissions to the smallest group that genuinely needs them, and decline a request that arrives unexpectedly or is paired with pressure to act quickly.
If you think the account is compromised
Act in the order Blizzard gives for a hacked account. The goal is to stop the intruder, prevent reinfection, and then provide support with a secured account and computer.
- Start Account Recovery. Use Blizzard’s official recovery route to regain control of the Battle.net account. Do not use a link supplied by a suspicious message.
- Secure the account and computer. Change exposed credentials after checking the computer for malware, protect the linked email, and remove suspicious software or addon installers.
- Add the Authenticator. Complete the mobile-app security step once you can safely access the account.
- Submit a support ticket after the computer is secured. Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance places the support request after recovery and device security so that new account access is less likely to be stolen again.
Review how the compromise could have happened: reused passwords, a malicious website, a phishing message, an infected addon, a gold seller, or account sharing. Fix that entry point as well as the account password. Otherwise, an attacker may regain access after support restores control.
What to expect after a trade scam
Blizzard’s current Trade Scams article says it does not restore items or gold in trade-scam situations. It may take action against a reported account if it verifies that a scam occurred, but that enforcement possibility is not a promise that your lost property will be returned.
Best Value
This limitation applies to a player who confirmed an exchange and then did not receive an informal promised service or payment. It is different from an account takeover in which someone entered without authorization. Report the facts through Blizzard Support, describe which built-in transaction was used (if any), and explain whether the account itself was accessed. Do not promise yourself a particular restoration outcome while the case is being reviewed.
For an account compromise, follow the recovery sequence above and provide support with accurate details. For a voluntary unsupported arrangement, treat the loss as potentially permanent and concentrate on preventing a repeat.
A practical decision test before you click Accept
Use this short test whenever a trade, message, or offer involves gold:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Is the request asking for a login, code, approval, or download? Stop. Verify through Blizzard’s official site instead of the message.
- Is the exchange visible in the Trade window, Auction House, or C.O.D. Mail? If not, the sources do not establish the same protection for the arrangement.
- Did the other player change anything? Re-read every item, quantity, and amount after the change.
- Is someone using urgency, a threat, or a reward to rush you? Treat that pressure as a phishing or scam warning.
- Would you be unable to recover the item if the other player disconnected? Do not send it based only on a promise.
These checks address the two failure points that cost players the most: credentials surrendered before a thief logs in, and valuables transferred in a deal the game cannot enforce.
Keep the official guidance available
Blizzard’s support pages and account-security articles are the authoritative place to check current recovery steps and policy because app features and enforcement procedures can change. Save these pages rather than relying on an old forum post:
