Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYour World of Warcraft characters, items and subscription access are tied to your Battle.net account. The most effective protection is a layered routine: use a unique Battle.net password, secure the email address attached to it, enable Blizzard’s Battle.net Authenticator, recognize phishing, keep your computer clean and never share credentials. If you suspect someone has accessed the account, start with Blizzard’s official recovery process rather than trying random login links.
The protection checklist
- Change to a strong, unique Battle.net password. Do not reuse the Battle.net email-and-password combination on another site. A password manager can help create and store a different password for each service, but Blizzard does not require a particular password-manager product.
- Protect the email account linked to Battle.net. Turn on that provider’s two-factor authentication if it offers one. Anyone who controls the email account may be able to interfere with account recovery.
- Enable the Battle.net Authenticator. Blizzard provides it through its free mobile app. Phone notifications can provide additional recovery help if there is a problem with the Authenticator.
- Check every unexpected message and link. Phishing can arrive through a website, email or in-game communication that pretends to be from Blizzard.
- Keep the computer and browser updated. Run reputable security scans for malware, keyloggers and viruses, especially after installing unfamiliar software or addons.
- Install addons cautiously. Use trusted download sources and never run an executable file as part of an addon installation.
- Keep credentials private. Do not share the account, log in on someone else’s computer or use non-Blizzard gold-selling and leveling services.
- If access is lost, recover first and then secure everything. Use Blizzard’s Account Recovery flow, secure the computer and submit an official support ticket as directed.
Blizzard’s detailed guidance is available in Account Hacked and Securing a Battle.net Account. Use those pages by navigating to them directly, not by trusting a link in an unsolicited message.

Why a Battle.net account is the real security boundary
World of Warcraft access is not protected by a separate game-only login. Your characters and game access depend on Battle.net credentials. That means a stolen password, compromised email account or malicious login page can put more than one Blizzard service at risk.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Blizzard’s account-hacking guidance specifically warns that reusing the same email address and password on other websites can expose the Battle.net account when one of those sites is breached. The practical rule is simple: the Battle.net password should be unique, and the email account used for Battle.net should have its own strong, unique password and two-factor authentication where available.

Think of the account as a chain rather than a single switch. Battle.net credentials are one link, the email address used for recovery is another, and the computer or phone used to sign in is a third. A security setting on only one link cannot compensate for a reused password, an exposed recovery inbox or a keylogger on the device.
Build a layered login defense
Use a unique password
Do not copy a password from your email, social-media, gaming or shopping accounts. Avoid sharing the Battle.net password with friends, guild members or anyone offering to help. If you suspect it has been exposed, change it from a device you trust and then investigate the device for malware.
Blizzard’s published guidance does not establish a required password length or a mandatory change schedule. What it does establish is that reuse is dangerous. A long, unpredictable password that exists only on Battle.net is more useful than a familiar password repeatedly used elsewhere.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not send the password to a person claiming to be a moderator, guild officer, technician or support representative. Official support can verify ownership through its recovery process; it does not require you to disclose the password in an unsolicited chat or email. If a password has been used on another website, replace it on Battle.net and on any other service that shared it.
Secure the linked email account
Your email address is part of the account-recovery chain. Turn on the email provider’s two-factor authentication, review its recovery addresses and phone numbers, and remove unknown forwarding rules or logged-in sessions when the provider supports those controls. These are email-account protections rather than Battle.net settings, so the exact menu names depend on the provider.
Check the inbox for password-change notices or recovery messages you did not request. An attacker who controls the inbox may be able to intercept a reset message, change recovery details or hide warnings. Use a separate, unique email password and protect the email account with the strongest sign-in options that provider offers.
Enable the Battle.net Authenticator
Blizzard recommends the Battle.net Authenticator, delivered through its free mobile app. It adds an account-protection step beyond the password. Blizzard also says phone notifications can help with recovery if there is a problem with the Authenticator.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Authenticator approval and phone notifications are related account features, but they are not the same thing. The Authenticator is the login-protection mechanism; notifications can support recovery when the Authenticator itself presents a problem. Keep the phone associated with the account available and protect the phone with its own screen lock.
Never approve a prompt simply because it appears on your phone. If you are not signing in, treat an unexpected approval request as a warning that someone may have your password. Reject it, change the password from a clean device and review the email account and computer rather than repeatedly approving prompts.

Authenticator, notifications and passkeys: what each one does
| Method | What Blizzard’s documentation establishes | How to use it safely |
|---|---|---|
| Battle.net Authenticator | Blizzard recommends it and provides it through a free mobile app. | Enable it on your own phone and keep the phone protected. Treat unexpected approval prompts as suspicious. |
| Phone notifications | Blizzard says they can help recover access if there is a problem with the Authenticator. | Keep the registered phone number current and do not approve an action you did not initiate. |
| Passkeys | Blizzard describes passkeys as an alternate login method stored on a device. Its support article says they are currently available only through the beta version of the Battle.net Desktop App. | Check Blizzard’s current documentation before attempting setup because availability may change. Do not assume a passkey is available in every Battle.net app or browser. |
These options should not be presented as interchangeable. The Authenticator is a Blizzard account-protection feature delivered through the mobile app. Phone notifications are described as a recovery aid when the Authenticator has a problem. A passkey is a device-stored login method, and Blizzard’s documented availability is limited to the Battle.net Desktop App beta at the time of its support article.
Passkeys are not a replacement for every recovery option. They are device-stored credentials, while the Authenticator and phone notifications are Blizzard account-protection and recovery features. Blizzard’s current passkey information is in Using a Passkey With Battle.net. Check that page again before setup because beta availability can change.
Recognize and stop phishing
Phishing messages imitate Blizzard to make you enter your password, approve a login or open a malicious file. Blizzard says these attempts can appear on websites, in email or in in-game communications. A message may use a threat such as “your account will be closed,” a tempting offer or a claim that your character has been reported.
The same warning applies to messages promising free game time, rare items, account restoration, competitive advantages or a special test. The subject line and visual design can look convincing, but neither proves who sent the message. Treat an unexpected request for credentials as hostile until you verify it independently.
Check the destination, not just the message text
- Inspect the actual destination address before signing in. A familiar logo or display name does not prove that the page is genuine.
- If a message is unexpected, close it and navigate directly to Blizzard or Battle.net using a bookmark or a manually entered address.
- Never provide your password, Authenticator approval or recovery information in response to an unsolicited prompt.
- Do not download a file merely because a message calls it an addon, security tool or account-verification utility.
- Be wary of shortened addresses, misspellings, extra words in a domain and pages that redirect you before the login form appears.
Blizzard’s Defend Azeroth When You Defend Your Account article, published March 15, 2024, also emphasizes checking links and treating unexpected requests for login information as potential phishing.
Keep addons and the computer from becoming the weak link
Install addons without running executables
Use a trusted addon source and follow the normal addon installation process. Blizzard specifically advises never running an executable file during addon installation. An addon that suddenly asks you to launch an installer, patcher or unrelated program deserves suspicion.
Recommended Free Tools
Game addons normally consist of the addon files placed in the appropriate game folder; an unexpected executable is a different risk. Do not disable security software just to make an unfamiliar installer run. If an addon page redirects to a download that is not the expected addon package, stop and verify the source.
If you think an addon or its installer may have infected the computer, stop using that device for account access. Scan it for malware, keyloggers and viruses, remove the suspected software, and change the Battle.net password after the device is clean. Changing the password before addressing a keylogger can simply reveal the new password as well.
Update the browser and security software
Keep the operating system, browser and security software updated. Updates close known security holes; scans can detect malicious programs that steal keystrokes or session information. Blizzard’s support guidance recommends scanning for malware, keyloggers and viruses rather than assuming that a normal game reinstall has removed the problem.

Run a scan after installing unfamiliar software, opening a suspicious attachment or noticing unexplained account activity. Review extensions and startup programs as part of the same check when your security tools provide those controls.

Be careful on shared computers
Blizzard warns against logging in on someone else’s computer. A shared machine may retain credentials, browser sessions or malware outside your control. If you must use a different device during an emergency, avoid saving the password, sign out completely and change the password later from a trusted, clean device.
Do not let a browser remember the Battle.net password on a public or borrowed computer. Close the browser when finished and avoid handling account recovery from a machine you cannot inspect. Your own updated device is the safer place to change credentials and review security settings.
Keep other people and third-party services out of the account
Do not share the account
Account sharing gives another person access to the same credentials and recovery path. Even a trusted friend can lose control of a device, reuse the password or accidentally approve a malicious prompt. Blizzard’s security guidance recommends keeping account credentials private.
Sharing also makes it difficult to determine which device or login caused a problem. A person who promises to level a character, manage a guild bank or test an addon does not need your password. Keep access limited to the account owner and use normal in-game features instead of handing over credentials.
Avoid non-Blizzard gold and leveling services
Blizzard warns against buying gold from non-Blizzard sources and using leveling services. These services may request credentials, ask you to install software or expose the account to fraud and enforcement action. Never trade account access for an in-game advantage.
A site that asks for your Battle.net login to deliver gold, boost a character or “verify” ownership is both a credential risk and a phishing warning. Blizzard’s guidance does not identify any third-party service as safe or necessary for account protection.
What to do when you suspect unauthorized access
Act on the possibility of compromise when you see a password-change notice you did not request, an unfamiliar recovery change, missing items, unexpected characters or login activity you cannot explain. Blizzard support labels common cases with phrases such as “Account compromised,” “All items missing” and “Password changed.”
- Stop entering credentials into suspicious pages. Close the message or website and use Blizzard’s official recovery address directly.
- Start Account Recovery. Follow the identity and access steps in Blizzard’s Account Hacked guidance.
- Secure the computer. Scan for malware, keyloggers and viruses. Remove suspicious addons or programs and update the browser and security software.
- Change the Battle.net password from a clean device. Make it unique and do not reuse the new password anywhere else.
- Secure the linked email account. Change its password, enable two-factor authentication if available and review recovery details and active sessions.
- Re-enable or verify account protection. Check the Battle.net Authenticator and registered phone notifications after access has been restored.
- Contact official support. Submit a support ticket as Blizzard directs, and describe the unauthorized changes, missing items or password change without sending your password to anyone.
If the email account is also affected, recover that account through its provider before relying on email-based Battle.net recovery. If you cannot sign in, do not keep guessing passwords or use a third-party “recovery” service. Blizzard’s own recovery flow and support channel are the appropriate routes.

“My password was changed”
Do not keep retrying old credentials or follow a password-reset link from an unexpected email. Go directly to Blizzard’s Account Recovery flow, then secure the email account and scan the computer before choosing a new password.
“All items are missing”
Treat missing items as a possible account compromise, not merely a game bug. Recover the account, change the password from a clean device, inspect the email account and submit the details through official support.
“I want to make sure my account is safe from hackers”
Complete the full checklist: unique credentials, protected email, Battle.net Authenticator, careful link handling, updated software, malware scans, trusted addons and no account sharing or third-party gold and leveling services. A single setting cannot compensate for a reused password or an infected computer.
“I received an Authenticator prompt I did not request”
Do not approve it. Close any open login page, change the Battle.net password from a clean device and inspect the linked email account. An unexpected prompt is a reason to investigate, not evidence that the request is legitimate.
“Can Blizzard recover everything automatically?”
Do not promise a particular recovery result. Follow Account Recovery and submit the support ticket Blizzard requests, describing the password change, missing items or other unauthorized activity as accurately as possible.
Do you need to buy a physical security product?
No purchase is established as necessary by Blizzard’s current guidance for this task. The recommended Authenticator is part of Blizzard’s free mobile app, and passkeys are device-stored credentials whose documented availability is limited to the Battle.net Desktop App beta. The official material reviewed does not establish support for a particular physical security key or other account-security accessory, so do not assume that a generic device will work with Battle.net.
A password manager may be useful for maintaining unique credentials, but Blizzard does not name or endorse a specific manager in the cited guidance. Likewise, general advice to keep security software updated does not establish that a particular cleaner, subscription or antivirus product is required.
A maintenance routine that prevents repeat problems
- Review the email account’s two-factor authentication, recovery details and active sessions when you make other security changes.
- Install browser, operating-system and security-software updates instead of postponing them indefinitely.
- Download only the addons you need from trusted sources and reject executable “installers.”
- Investigate every unexpected login, password-change message or Authenticator prompt immediately.
- Keep the recovery phone available and current if you use Battle.net phone notifications.
- Revisit Blizzard’s support pages before setting up passkeys because the beta-only availability described in current documentation may change.
- Periodically confirm that your Battle.net password is not reused anywhere else and that no unfamiliar email recovery option or forwarding rule has appeared.
Security is an ongoing habit, not a one-time checkbox. A unique password, protected email, Authenticator, cautious link handling, clean software and private credentials together give your Battle.net account several independent defenses.

Can an addon steal my account?
Blizzard warns about malicious sites and addons. Download addons from trusted sources, never run an executable during installation, scan for malware if an addon may have infected the computer and change the password after the device is clean.
What is the first step after my password is changed without permission?
Use Blizzard’s official Account Recovery flow directly, then secure the computer and linked email account, change the password from a clean device and submit an official support ticket as directed.
Should I buy a hardware security key for Battle.net?
Blizzard’s current guidance does not establish that a physical security key is supported or necessary. The documented Authenticator is part of the free mobile app, and passkeys are device-stored credentials.
The Bottom Line
Protect the Battle.net account behind your World of Warcraft access with a unique password, a secured email account, Blizzard’s Authenticator, cautious handling of links and addons, updated software and private credentials. If you see a password change, missing items or other unexplained activity, stop using suspicious links, recover through Blizzard, clean the device and contact official support.
