Start linking only from the official wearable and primary UPI apps, verify the device identity shown in the primary app, approve the connection yourself, choose a conservative limit, and review transactions. Never disclose your UPI PIN or OTP. If the watch is lost, altered, or no longer needed, delink it immediately and contact your bank or UPI provider through an official channel.
What a wearable UPI payment actually is
NPCI’s UPI Circle IoT framework allows a permitted Internet of Things (IoT) device, including a watch profile, to be linked to a primary UPI app. The watch is a secondary device or software profile. The primary app remains the place where you establish the relationship, give consent, manage limits, view activity, and revoke access.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
NPCI’s documented flow starts in the IoT device’s app. You verify the mobile number, then continue in the primary UPI app to link the device. The primary app should show the secondary device or software details and obtain your consent using two-factor authentication. That authorisation can involve your UPI PIN or biometrics, depending on the supported flow. Read the confirmation screen before accepting it; a PIN prompt should appear only inside the legitimate UPI app and only when you initiated the setup or payment.
Recommended Free Tools
NPCI’s 8 October 2025 addendum states that “debit transactions using IoT shall be only initiated by explicit user action.” A watch should not silently create a debit simply because it is nearby, paired by Bluetooth, or displaying a notification. If an unexpected payment request appears, cancel it and investigate through the primary app.

Does every smartwatch support UPI payments?
No. A watch that supports contactless card payments, NFC, or a manufacturer wallet is not automatically a UPI Circle IoT device. Eligibility depends on three separate conditions:
- The exact wearable model or software profile must be permitted under NPCI’s applicable IoT rules.
- Your primary UPI app must support the IoT linking and management flow.
- The wearable’s app, firmware, account region, and bank relationship must be compatible with that flow at the time you set it up.
NPCI’s rules do not establish a universal model-by-model compatibility list. Before buying or linking a watch, check the current documentation from NPCI, the wearable maker, and your UPI app. Look for explicit references to UPI Circle IoT rather than a generic “contactless payments” label. If the provider cannot identify the supported profile, limit controls, transaction history, and delinking process, do not add the device to your bank account.

|---|---|---|
| Contactless or NFC payments | The watch may communicate with a payment terminal. | Whether it supports NPCI-permitted UPI Circle IoT and your primary UPI app. |
| Manufacturer wallet | A separate wallet or card-token service may be available. | Whether UPI account linking, UPI PIN authorisation, and NPCI lifecycle controls are supported. |
| QR display or scanning | The watch can display or read payment information. | Whether a UPI debit is explicitly initiated and protected by the approved app flow. |
| “UPI-ready” marketing | The provider claims some UPI capability. | The exact model, app version, bank support, limits, history view, and lost-device revocation procedure. |
Keep the UPI PIN and OTP secret
A UPI PIN is the four- or six-digit passcode used to authorise bank transactions. NPCI’s UPI FAQ says: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” That includes relatives, merchants, delivery workers, device support, bank callers, and anyone claiming to represent NPCI. A legitimate support agent should not need you to read the PIN aloud, type it into a chat, or disclose an OTP.
Enter the PIN only on the trusted authorisation screen you opened yourself. Check the app name, icon, and context before proceeding. A notification, QR code, phone call, or message that sends you to an unfamiliar page is not a reason to enter credentials. If you suspect that someone has seen your PIN, change it through your bank or UPI app and review recent transactions.

The PIN is not a way to receive money. NPCI’s Fraud Awareness guidance warns that scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is for making a payment, not receiving a refund, reward, or incoming transfer. Reject any request to “verify” a refund by scanning a QR code and entering your PIN.
Set up a wearable-linked UPI profile safely
- Use official software. Install the wearable app and primary UPI app from their official app stores or the provider’s official website. Do not install an APK sent through an unsolicited message or support chat. The Reserve Bank of India’s public-awareness notice on payment fraud identifies malicious links and spurious applications as common risks; see RBI’s 22 June 2020 guidance.
- Secure the phone first. Update the phone, enable a strong screen lock, and use the device’s biometric protection where appropriate. Do not begin linking on a borrowed or unlocked phone. A compromised primary phone can undermine every secondary-device control.
- Start in the wearable’s IoT app. Choose the UPI or UPI Circle option supplied by the provider. Confirm that the app identifies the exact watch and account you intend to use. Stop if the app asks for your UPI PIN before you have reached the official primary UPI app.
- Verify the mobile number. Complete the app’s mobile-number verification using the SIM and account you normally use for UPI. Treat an unexpected SIM-change alert or failed verification as a security event, not as a prompt to bypass protections.
- Continue in the primary UPI app. The hand-off should open the UPI app you already trust. Check the displayed wearable name, model or software profile, account, and any other device identifier. NPCI requires the primary app to display secondary device or software details so that you can recognise what you are approving.
- Reject unknown devices. If the screen shows a watch, profile, phone number, or account you do not recognise, cancel the request. Do not approve it merely because the request arrived after you tapped “link.” Contact the provider through an official support route if the details are wrong.
- Give consent deliberately. Approve only after reading the permissions, account, and limit. Complete the requested two-factor authorisation in the primary app with your PIN or biometric. Never send that PIN or an OTP to the wearable maker or another person.
- Choose the smallest useful limit. Start below the maximum allowed amount. A low limit reduces potential loss if the watch or account is misused and can be increased later through the primary app if the feature permits it.
- Confirm lifecycle controls. Before leaving setup, locate the screens for changing the limit, viewing transaction history, delinking the device, and revoking authorisation. If you cannot find those controls, do not rely on the wearable for payments.
- Make a small, intentional test. Initiate a low-value payment yourself and confirm that it appears in the primary app’s history. Do not treat a successful pairing notification as proof that the correct bank account or limit was selected.
Know the current NPCI IoT limits
The following figures come from NPCI’s 8 October 2025 addendum. They are ceilings, not recommended spending levels, and rules or app implementations can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Control | Figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum per IoT device transaction | ₹5,000 | NPCI’s dated ceiling for one IoT-device transaction; set your own lower limit when possible. |
| Maximum per delegation per month | ₹15,000 | NPCI’s dated monthly ceiling for a delegation; monitor cumulative activity in the primary app. |
| IoT devices or software profiles linked to one primary UPI app | Up to five | Remove profiles you no longer use so the device list remains recognisable. |
| Initial period after linking | ₹2,000 shown on NPCI’s current UPI Circle page for the first 24 hours | The page’s publication date is not stated. Confirm the amount and duration in the current app and applicable rules before relying on it. |
A provider may impose a lower limit than NPCI’s ceiling, and your bank or app may show different controls. The value displayed in the current primary UPI app is the operative setting for your account. Do not assume that an older screenshot or a watch’s advertised limit is still valid.
Use a linked watch without exposing payment details
Keep the watch physically controlled
Enable the watch’s passcode, wrist-detection lock, or equivalent security feature if the model provides one. Keep the watch on your wrist or in your possession when a payment profile is active. Do not lend it while it is unlocked, and do not leave it unattended in a public place. A passcode protects the interface, but it does not replace delinking after loss or suspected tampering.
Check every payment prompt
Read the merchant, amount, and account shown on the watch or in the primary app before confirming. Cancel prompts you did not initiate. Because NPCI requires explicit user action for IoT debits, an unsolicited prompt is a warning sign. If the amount, merchant, or currency is wrong, do not try to “correct” it by entering your PIN; cancel and investigate.

Keep notifications private
Payment notifications can reveal merchant names, amounts, and partial account details. Use the watch’s privacy setting to hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen, especially when other people can see the display. Disable payment notifications on a shared phone or computer where you do not control access.

Check transaction history in the primary UPI app after setup and periodically thereafter. Look for unfamiliar merchants, duplicate debits, unexpected timing, or payments that do not match your watch activity. Save the transaction reference and contact the bank promptly if anything is wrong; do not wait for a monthly statement.
Update through trusted channels
Apply operating-system, firmware, and app updates from the official provider. Avoid “security updates” delivered as links in messages. If an update changes the payment screens or permissions, recheck the linked device and limit before using the watch again.
Recognise common wearable-payment scams
- Fake support call: Someone claims your watch or UPI profile will be blocked and asks for a PIN or OTP. End the call and use the bank’s official number or in-app support.
- Refund QR code: A seller sends a QR code and says you must scan it and enter your PIN to receive money. A PIN after QR scanning authorises a payment, not a receipt.
- Malicious linking link: A message directs you to “activate UPI on your watch.” Open the official app yourself instead of following the link.
- SIM-swap pressure: A caller asks for personal details or a one-time code to “restore” mobile service. Contact your mobile operator through its official channel and watch for sudden loss of service.
- Unrecognised pairing request: The primary app shows a device or profile you did not initiate. Decline it, capture the details if safe, and contact the provider.
RBI’s payment-fraud guidance lists PIN and OTP disclosure, malicious links, fake applications, and SIM-related attacks among the risks consumers should guard against. A wearable does not make these social-engineering attacks safer; it can make an urgent-looking prompt more convincing because it appears on a personal device.
What to do if the watch is lost, stolen, or tampered with
- Open the primary UPI app immediately. Use a trusted phone or other authorised access method, not a link from a message.
- Delink or revoke the wearable. Go to the UPI Circle, IoT, linked devices, or device-management area and remove the exact watch or software profile. NPCI’s IoT requirements include lifecycle management and revocation for security concerns.
- Lower or disable the device limit if delinking is temporarily unavailable. Take a screenshot or note the confirmation reference, but do not treat a limit change as a substitute for revocation.
- Review recent transactions. Check the history for activity after the last time you had the watch. Record dates, amounts, merchant names, and transaction references for any dispute.
- Contact the bank or UPI app provider through an official channel. Ask them to block or investigate the device-linked authorisation and report unauthorised transactions promptly.
- Secure the wearable account. Change the wearable-app password, remove the watch from the account, and use the provider’s remote-lock or erase function if available.
- Change your UPI PIN if exposure is possible. Do this through the legitimate bank or UPI app. Never disclose the replacement PIN to support staff or anyone assisting you.
If the phone itself is lost, protect the mobile number and UPI access as well as the watch. NPCI’s consumer FAQ advises contacting the mobile operator to block a lost phone’s number, then contacting the bank or UPI provider through official channels.

Fix setup and payment problems without weakening security
The watch does not appear in the primary app
Confirm that the exact model and software profile are supported, that both apps are current, and that the phone’s verified SIM matches the UPI account. Do not sideload an alternative app or disable security checks to force pairing. If support is unclear, stop and ask the bank or provider whether the model is permitted for UPI Circle IoT.
The displayed device details are wrong
Cancel the authorisation. Check that you are signed in to the intended wearable account and primary UPI account, then restart the official flow. If the wrong identity persists, contact the provider; approving it could link another person’s device or an unintended profile.
The app asks for a PIN outside the normal authorisation screen
Close the page and do not enter the PIN. Reopen the primary UPI app directly from its installed icon. A PIN request in a browser, chat, unsolicited link, or remote-support tool is not part of a safe setup.
A payment is declined
Check the device’s connection, account balance, bank status, transaction limit, and whether the primary app still shows the profile as active. Do not repeatedly retry an unfamiliar prompt. Confirm the amount and merchant in the primary app before trying again.

How to evaluate a wearable before linking it
Use this checklist when comparing devices or deciding whether to enable payments:
- Compatibility: Does the exact model appear in the provider’s current UPI Circle IoT documentation, and does your primary UPI app support it?
- Identity display: Does the primary app clearly identify the watch, profile, account, and authorisation being requested?
- Consent: Is there an explicit approval step with two-factor authentication rather than silent activation?
- Limits: Can you set or change a low device limit, and does the app show any initial-period restriction?
- History: Can you see device-related transaction history in the primary app?
- Revocation: Can you delink the device yourself, and is there an official lost-device escalation route?
- Physical protection: Does the watch offer a passcode, wrist detection, automatic lock, and privacy controls for notifications?
- Support quality: Can you reach the bank and wearable provider without being asked for your PIN, OTP, or remote access?
No screen protector, case, or generic accessory is established by these rules as protection for a UPI PIN or payment credential. Security comes from the authorised app flow, device access controls, conservative limits, transaction monitoring, and rapid revocation.
Keep the primary UPI app as the control centre
The safest mental model is “one account, several controlled credentials,” not “a watch that knows my PIN.” The primary app should remain your source of truth for linked devices, consent, limits, history, and revocation. A watch may make an explicit payment more convenient, but it should not become the place where you troubleshoot account ownership or share secrets.
Recheck the current NPCI rules and your provider’s app screens whenever you add a new device, change banks, reset the phone, or install a major firmware update. The dated limits in the 8 October 2025 addendum and the initial limit displayed on NPCI’s UPI Circle page may change as the service evolves. If the current app does not show a control or limit you need, leave the wearable unlinked until the bank or provider confirms the supported process.
