Protect both the account and the identity it represents: use unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA), secure the email account used for recovery, and verify suspicious messages through the platform itself. If someone has made a separate copycat profile, report that profile. If someone has taken over your real account, use the platform’s official recovery process and secure the account as soon as possible.
First, identify which kind of impersonation you are dealing with
Impersonation can mean two different problems, and the response depends on which one happened:

- A copycat profile: Someone created a separate account using your name, photos, or biographical details. Your genuine account may still be secure. Report the fake profile through the platform.
- An account takeover: Someone gained access to your real account and is using it to pose as you. Secure or recover the original account, then check what the intruder may have sent or changed.
Look for unfamiliar login alerts, password resets you did not request, changed recovery details, unexpected posts or messages, new contacts, or an inability to sign in. These signs can indicate a takeover; a fake profile can exist without any changes to your genuine account.

Secure your email first
Your email account may be able to reset social-media passwords, so protect it with a unique password and MFA as well. Check that its recovery email address and phone number are current and under your control. The FTC emphasizes protecting email because it can be central to recovering a hacked social account in its account recovery guidance.

Use unique passwords and MFA
Do not reuse a password across social accounts. A password manager can help you create and keep track of distinct passwords. FTC consumer guidance suggests a strong password and mentions 12–15 characters or a passphrase; that is advice from the FTC, not a universal minimum that guarantees safety.
Enable MFA wherever the service offers it. MFA asks for an additional verification factor beyond your password. Choose the strongest method the platform supports, and set up a backup or recovery method so a lost device does not leave you locked out. CISA recommends phishing-resistant MFA where available. FIDO security keys are one option on services that support them: CISA says FIDO can block an attempt to log in through a fake website, but a key is an authentication method—not a reporting or recovery service—and does not prevent every kind of compromise. See CISA’s “More than a Password” guidance for its recommendations.
Keep recovery details current
Review the recovery email address and phone number on each social account and make sure they still belong to you. Meta has said its own research found people were “two times more likely to recover their Facebook account if their contact points are up to date”; that is Meta’s research statement, not an independently verified estimate. Meta’s account-security guidance explains the value of current contact points.

Be selective about connected apps
Be wary of third-party apps that promise implausible features in exchange for your social login. Meta’s October 2022 warning concerned malicious apps it had identified, including apps that offered no functionality unless users entered Facebook credentials; it does not mean all third-party apps are malicious. If you entered credentials into a suspicious app, remove it, change the password, enable 2FA, turn on login alerts, and review active sessions, following Meta’s guidance.
For organization-run accounts
Teams managing a public-facing account need controls beyond an individual’s password settings. CISA’s Social Media Account Protection guide recommends a written social-media policy, credential management, MFA, privacy settings, trusted devices, vendor vetting, situational awareness, and an incident-response plan. Organizations should adapt those recommendations to their roles and operations.
Verify unexpected support and recovery messages
Treat unexpected login alerts, support messages, and recovery requests as untrusted until you confirm them independently. Do not follow a suspicious link to sign in, and never give someone a password, one-time code, or recovery link in response to a direct message. Open the service’s app or type a known official help address yourself.

On Instagram, Meta says authentic direct Instagram communications can be checked in the app’s Emails from Instagram tab in settings. Use that in-app check rather than trusting the sender name or a link in an unexpected message. Meta also advises verifying suspicious senders and avoiding their links or attachments: Meta’s phishing advice.

Use a device you trust and the platform’s own security settings. If you suspect malware on your device, the FTC recommends running an up-to-date security scan as part of the response. Then work through these steps:
- Change the social account password to a new, unique one.
- Sign out of other devices or sessions, using the platform’s available security controls.
- Enable MFA if it is not already on.
- Check that the recovery email and phone number are yours; correct any changes you did not make.
- Review recent account activity and connected apps or other access, and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Secure the associated email account with its own unique password and MFA.

If you are locked out of the real account
Go to the platform’s official account-recovery page by opening its app or entering a known official address yourself. If you cannot sign in, follow that provider’s recovery process; do not trust a stranger who offers recovery help through comments or direct messages, and do not give them codes or credentials.
After you regain access, inspect posts and messages, look for unfamiliar contacts or activity, and remove scam content where possible. Warn people who may have received fraudulent messages, using another channel they can verify. The FTC recommends notifying contacts after taking back control; see its account recovery guidance.
Report a separate fake profile
Use the platform’s built-in report flow on the impersonating profile. Before reporting, keep its profile link and handle, screenshots, and any scam messages; these details can help describe what happened. Report the fake account itself, not just a message from it.

When to report fraud or identity theft outside the platform
If the impersonation involved money or stolen personal information, consider reporting it to the relevant government service as well as the platform. In the United States, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for fraud complaints and IdentityTheft.gov when personal information has been stolen. These reporting routes are U.S.-specific; elsewhere, use the appropriate local authority.
The FTC reported that nearly 30% of people who said they lost money to a scam in 2025 said it started on social media, and reported $2.1 billion in social-media scam losses that year. Those are reported-loss figures for social-media scams generally, not estimates of all fraud and not figures specific to impersonation scams. FTC’s 2026 report.
