The safest way to use ChatGPT is to combine four controls: switch off Improve the model for everyone, use Temporary Chat for genuinely sensitive one-off work, review Memory and personalization, and avoid sending secrets you would not want retained or exposed to a service provider. Then inspect every connected GPT or app, delete chats and separately stored files when finished, and secure the account with multi-factor authentication.
No single setting makes every conversation private. Normal chats can remain in your history, Memory is controlled separately from model-improvement settings, connected services receive data under their own policies, and deleted information can be retained temporarily for safety or legal reasons. The steps below show what each control does, what it does not do, and how to choose the right option.

What ChatGPT privacy controls actually cover
ChatGPT privacy has several separate layers. A conversation may be visible in your history, used to personalize later replies, eligible for model improvement, copied to a third-party service through an action, or stored as an uploaded file in your Library. Changing one layer does not automatically change the others.

Availability of these controls can vary by plan, account, region, application version and workspace policy. If a label is missing, use the closest current Data controls, Personalization or Security section in your account and check whether an administrator has locked the setting.

Stop personal chats from being used to improve models
For a personal account, open Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone and switch the control off. OpenAI states that new conversations then will not be used to train its models. The setting applies across devices for the signed-in account, so changing it on the web also affects the same account in the mobile apps.
What switching the control off changes
- New conversations are excluded from model-improvement use under the setting described by OpenAI.
- Existing saved conversations remain in your chat history; opting out does not erase them.
- The control is separate from Memory, personalization, account security and third-party integrations.
A feedback exception to remember
On individual plans, submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can cause the entire conversation associated with that feedback to be used to improve models, even after you have opted out. Do not submit feedback on a highly sensitive conversation if model-improvement exclusion is important for that chat.
Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive one-off task
Choose Temporary Chat before sending information that should not become part of your normal history or Memory. OpenAI describes a temporary chat as staying out of chat history, not creating or updating memories, and not being used to improve its models while it remains temporary.

- Start a new conversation and select the Temporary Chat option in the chat interface. The exact control can differ between web and mobile versions.
- Confirm that the temporary indicator is visible before pasting text or uploading a file.
- Complete the task without switching the conversation back to a normal chat.
- Do not save the conversation if you want it to remain temporary. Saving converts it into a regular chat that follows ordinary history and retention settings.
Temporary does not mean instant destruction
OpenAI may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for safety purposes for up to 30 days. Temporary Chat therefore limits history, Memory and model-improvement use, but it is not a promise that no copy exists anywhere during that period. A connected action can also send information outside OpenAI’s systems, where the recipient’s policy applies.

Control Memory and personalization separately
Memory determines whether ChatGPT can retain information to personalize later conversations. Review it independently from Data controls. In ChatGPT, open the settings area for Personalization or Memory, inspect saved memories, and remove individual entries or disable the feature when you do not want ongoing personalization.
Reference chat history is a separate choice
Turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered information obtained from past chats for deletion within 30 days. This is different from merely deleting one visible conversation and different again from switching off model improvement.
Limits of disabling Memory
OpenAI says that turning Memory or personalization off does not disable limited safety and security uses of context in rare, high-risk situations. Treat the setting as a personalization control, not as a guarantee that no contextual information can ever be processed for safety.

The most reliable privacy protection is data minimization: give ChatGPT only the information required to complete the task. Reducing the amount of sensitive material also limits the consequences of retention, accidental disclosure, account compromise or an integration forwarding the content.

Never paste these secrets when they are not essential
- Passwords, passphrases and authentication or recovery codes.
- Private encryption keys, API keys, access tokens and session cookies.
- Government identification numbers, payment details and full financial account information.
- Confidential client records, medical details or personnel files that are not necessary for the requested analysis.
- Private addresses, phone numbers, signatures and other direct identifiers when a redacted example would work.
Redact and substitute instead of uploading a complete record
Replace names with neutral labels such as Client A, remove account numbers, crop irrelevant pages and delete embedded metadata when practical. Use a short excerpt instead of an entire contract or database export. If the answer depends on a value, preserve the value while removing its identity; for example, provide an age range or a rounded amount rather than a full profile.
Before uploading a document, ask whether ChatGPT needs the original file at all. A manually redacted copy is safer than relying on an instruction such as “ignore the confidential parts,” because the sensitive text still reaches the service when it is present in the upload.
Understand GPTs, actions and connected apps
A custom GPT or connected app can send information to another organization when an action or integration is invoked. That recipient’s privacy policy governs the data it receives. It may retain information longer than 30 days or use it for purposes that differ from OpenAI’s handling.
Check an integration before using it
- Open the GPT or app details and identify what actions, connectors or external domains it can call.
- Read the recipient’s privacy and retention terms, especially whether requests are logged, reused or shared.
- Disconnect services that are not required for the task and avoid granting broad account access for a single lookup.
- Do not place secrets in a prompt merely because an action is available; send the minimum fields needed for the response.
If you cannot determine where an action sends data or how long the recipient keeps it, treat the integration as unsuitable for confidential information. A Temporary Chat does not override a third party’s policy once data has been transmitted.

Delete chats and separately retained files
When you delete a saved chat, ChatGPT removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI schedules permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless the data has already been de-identified or must be retained for security or legal reasons.
Delete a chat
- Open the chat history and locate the conversation.
- Use the conversation menu and choose Delete, then confirm.
- Check that the conversation has disappeared from the account view rather than merely being archived or renamed.
Delete uploaded files separately
Deleting a conversation does not delete a file that remains in your Library. Open the Library, locate the uploaded document or image, and delete it there as a separate step. This distinction matters when a sensitive file was attached to a chat that you later removed.
When deletion is not enough
If you need a broader record of what is held, use the account’s data-export tools. For account closure or a formal deletion request, follow the privacy controls available for your account and region. Keep the 30-day schedule and its security, legal and de-identification exceptions in mind; deletion from the visible interface is immediate, but backend removal is not necessarily instantaneous.
Secure the ChatGPT account itself
Privacy settings cannot protect an account that another person can enter. OpenAI’s Privacy Center lists multi-factor authentication among the available controls. Enable MFA in the account security settings if it is offered for your account, and protect the second factor independently from your primary password.
- Use a long, unique password that is not reused on another service.
- Do not share one-time codes, recovery codes or authenticated browser sessions.
- Review active sessions and connected applications when those controls are available, and revoke anything you no longer recognize.
- On a shared computer, sign out after use and avoid saving credentials in a browser profile that other people can open.
The exact security labels and MFA availability can vary by application version, region and workspace policy. If you use ChatGPT through an employer or school, ask the administrator which security and retention controls are enforced centrally.
Know the rules for managed workspaces
OpenAI says that, by default, it does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces or the API Platform to improve its models. That default does not make every workspace identical: administrators can control retention, user access and which features or integrations are available.
What an administrator may control
- How long conversations and other workspace data are retained.
- Which users can access shared resources, GPTs, connectors or files.
- Whether Memory, external actions and other features are enabled.
- How the organization handles legal holds, investigations and account offboarding.
Do not assume that a work account has the same privacy choices as a personal account. Read the organization’s policy, use approved workspaces for regulated information, and avoid moving confidential company data into a personal account where the administrator cannot apply those controls.

A privacy-first workflow for every conversation
Before sending
- Classify the task: ordinary drafting, confidential analysis or a one-off sensitive question.
- For a sensitive one-off, select Temporary Chat before entering content.
- Check whether Memory and Reference chat history are enabled, and turn them off if ongoing personalization is not wanted.
- Confirm the Improve the model for everyone setting on a personal account.
- Remove secrets, direct identifiers and irrelevant pages from text and files.
- Inspect GPT, action and app permissions before connecting an outside service.
While chatting
- Use placeholders and provide only the fields needed to answer the question.
- Do not paste credentials or authentication codes, even if the prompt claims they are needed for troubleshooting.
- Keep highly sensitive conversations free of thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback when you have opted out of model improvement.
- Stop and reassess if the assistant asks for information unrelated to the task or an integration requests broader access than expected.
Afterward
- Delete the chat if you no longer need it.
- Delete each sensitive upload from the Library separately.
- Review and remove any Memory created from the conversation.
- Disconnect an app or action that was needed only temporarily.
- Use export or account-deletion controls when you need a complete copy or want to close the account.

What these controls cannot guarantee
Privacy controls reduce exposure; they do not make ChatGPT an offline vault. Temporary chats can be retained for safety for up to 30 days, deleted chats can have security or legal exceptions, and an external recipient can follow a different retention schedule. Account compromise, screenshots, copied answers and information you voluntarily share with another person are outside these controls.
There is also no universal setting that applies identically to every plan, region, device and workspace. Recheck the labels in the account you are actually using, particularly after an app update or when moving between a personal and managed workspace.
