Apple says many requests run on your device, while more complex requests can be sent to Private Cloud Compute (PCC), so using Siri is not the same as keeping every request on the phone.
What happens to a Siri or Apple Intelligence request
Apple describes two processing routes. Many Apple Intelligence tasks are completed on the device. When a request needs a larger model or more computation, Apple Intelligence analyzes the request and may send the relevant data to Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s server-side system.

PCC is cloud processing, even though it is designed differently from ordinary server processing. Apple says the data needed to fulfill a PCC request is processed on Apple silicon servers, is not retained after the request, and is not accessible to Apple. Apple also says independent researchers can inspect the server software. Those are Apple’s design and security claims, not a guarantee that every request is processed locally or an independent audit of every individual interaction.

Start with a privacy baseline
Before changing settings, decide what you are trying to protect. A person who mainly wants to prevent accidental wake-word activation needs a different setup from someone who wants to minimize personalized suggestions or avoid server-assisted requests.
- Accidental activation: disable wake-word listening or use a button-based method.
- Personal context: limit app learning and the places where Siri suggestions appear.
- Generated summaries: turn off individual summaries, smart replies, or prompts instead of disabling all Siri features.
- Cloud processing: avoid advanced requests when you do not want a request to be eligible for PCC, and use Apple Intelligence Report to see whether PCC requests occurred.
- Service improvement: review optional Siri and Dictation sharing choices separately from ordinary Siri activation.
Menus, supported devices, languages, regions, and feature availability vary. The controls described below reflect Apple’s iOS 27-era documentation; your iPhone may show a different label or omit a control that is unavailable for your model, language, or region.
Control how Siri activates
Wake-word listening is the most visible privacy choice because the microphone must monitor for an activation phrase while that feature is enabled. Apple provides several ways to reduce or remove that exposure.
Turn off “Siri” or “Hey Siri”
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri (on some versions this may appear as Apple Intelligence & Siri).
- Open Requests or the section covering how you talk to Siri.
- Turn off the “Siri” or “Hey Siri” listening option.
- Follow the confirmation prompt if iOS asks whether to disable the wake phrase on this device.
With wake-word activation disabled, you can still use another supported activation method, such as pressing the side or Home button, unless you disable Siri entirely.
Use a button or Type to Siri instead
If you want Siri available only when you deliberately invoke it, select the supported button-activation method in the same Siri settings area. On supported devices, enable Type to Siri to enter a request rather than speaking it. Availability depends on the device and software version.

These choices reduce unintended spoken capture but do not make the request local. A manually typed request can still be handled on-device or sent to PCC when Apple Intelligence determines that server-side computation is required.
Use the face-down behavior
Apple says placing an iPhone face down prevents it from responding to the wake phrase while it is face down. This is a situational safeguard rather than a replacement for disabling wake-word listening: the behavior depends on the phone remaining face down, and it does not change how a manually initiated request is processed.
Limit app learning and suggestion surfaces
Siri can use information from individual apps to make suggestions, surface content in Search, or provide actions in other parts of the system. If you want less personalization, review these permissions app by app instead of assuming that one global Siri switch controls everything.
Review each app’s Siri access
- Go to Settings and open Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Look for the list of apps or the section covering Apps, learning, or suggestions.
- Open an app whose information you do not want Siri to use.
- Turn off the available learning or suggestion controls for that app. Depending on the app and iOS release, labels can include options such as learning from the app, showing results in Search, showing on the Home Screen, or suggesting the app.
- Repeat for messaging, mail, notes, health, finance, diary, or other apps containing sensitive information.
Apple notes that settings differ by app and Siri version. Some apps expose several independent switches, while others expose only a subset. Disable only the surfaces you do not want: removing Home Screen suggestions is not necessarily the same as preventing Siri from learning from the app.
Choose where suggestions can appear
Suggestion controls determine visibility as well as personalization. A suggestion on the Lock Screen or Home Screen can reveal that you used an app or received a particular type of message to someone who can see your phone. Turn off Lock Screen, Home Screen, Search, or app-specific suggestion surfaces where those options are offered.

You do not have to turn off every Siri capability to stop a feature that makes you uncomfortable. Apple’s iOS 27 guidance lists individual controls for several functions that can expose content in generated or suggested form.
Examples of feature-specific switches
- Messages summaries: disable automatic summaries if you do not want message threads condensed by Apple Intelligence.
- Mail summaries and smart replies: turn off summaries or suggested responses when you do not want generated interpretations of mail or proposed wording.
- Notification summaries: disable them if a condensed notification could omit context or display sensitive information in a new format.
- Voicemail suggestions: turn off suggested actions or responses derived from voicemail content.
- Journal prompts: disable prompts if you do not want the system suggesting entries based on your activity or context.
Open Settings and look under Apple Intelligence & Siri, then check the relevant app’s settings for feature-specific switches. Apple’s labels and available controls depend on software version, language, region, and device. A feature may also be identified as beta, including Siri AI in the cited iOS 27 documentation.
When to disable Apple Intelligence more broadly
If you do not want any Apple Intelligence features, use the main Apple Intelligence control when it is available on your device rather than hunting for every individual switch. This is a broader change: it can remove summaries, writing assistance, smart replies, and other features at once. If your concern is one category of content, selective switches preserve more functionality while reducing the specific exposure you care about.
Use Screen Time for a managed device
For a child’s phone, a work-managed device, or any situation where the user should not re-enable a feature, Screen Time can restrict access. The exact restriction names depend on the iOS release and management configuration. Check Screen Time’s allowed-app and intelligence-related controls after setting the desired Siri and Apple Intelligence options.

Use Apple Intelligence Report to inspect PCC activity
Apple Intelligence Report is an observation tool for requests handled by Private Cloud Compute. It does not turn Apple Intelligence into an on-device-only mode and it is not proof that no other data processing occurred.
Open the report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Open Apple Intelligence Report.
- Choose a reporting period: last 15 minutes or last 7 days.
- Review the listed PCC requests and export the report as a JSON file if you need to keep or analyze the record.
An empty report is not necessarily an error. It can simply mean that no request from the selected period required PCC processing.
Interpret what the report can and cannot tell you
- It can show: whether requests were recorded as going to PCC during the selected period.
- It cannot show: that every other Siri interaction stayed on the device, that no local logs or app-level processing existed, or that a request was harmless simply because it does not appear in the report.
- It is time-limited: choose the seven-day view when investigating regular use, and export JSON if you need a record before changing settings.
Use the report as a feedback loop. If you see PCC activity after enabling a feature, decide whether that feature’s benefit justifies server-assisted processing. If the report is empty, do not infer that Siri never handled personal information; it only indicates that no PCC request was recorded in that period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review Siri and Dictation improvement sharing
Activation settings and service-improvement settings address different data flows. Apple says certain Siri and Dictation information can be sent to Apple’s servers using encrypted protocols and random, device-generated identifiers. Apple also describes optional sharing of audio and interaction history to improve Siri and Dictation.
Look for the Improve Siri & Dictation or similarly named control in your Siri, Apple Intelligence, or Privacy settings. If you do not want to contribute optional audio or interaction history, leave that sharing option off. Turning it off does not necessarily disable Siri itself; it changes whether you volunteer material for service improvement.
Best Value
Apple’s explanation has an important qualification: deletion is limited for requests older than six months, and reviewed samples that are no longer associated with the device-generated identifier cannot be removed through that identifier. Therefore, disabling improvement sharing is a forward-looking choice, not a promise that every historical sample can be retroactively located and deleted.
Choose a setup that matches your priorities
| Privacy choice | Convenience retained | What it reduces | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep “Siri” or “Hey Siri” enabled | Hands-free requests | Accidental wake-word activation | Microphone monitoring for the activation phrase remains enabled |
| Use button activation or Type to Siri | Deliberate Siri requests | Unintended spoken activation | No hands-free wake-word access |
| Disable learning for selected apps | Siri for other apps | Use of sensitive app content for personalization | Fewer app-specific suggestions and shortcuts |
| Hide selected suggestion surfaces | Suggestions in approved locations | Visible hints on the Lock Screen, Home Screen, or Search | Less proactive assistance |
| Turn off individual summaries or smart replies | Other Apple Intelligence tools | Generated interpretations of selected content | Manual reading or composing for those categories |
| Disable Apple Intelligence broadly | Basic device functions that do not depend on it | Apple Intelligence features as a group | Loss of summaries, writing tools, smart replies, and related functions |
| Review Apple Intelligence Report | Existing Siri and Apple Intelligence features | Uncertainty about PCC use | It reports PCC activity but does not make processing local |
Common privacy questions and failure cases
“I turned off ‘Hey Siri,’ but I still see Apple Intelligence activity.”
Wake-word activation and Apple Intelligence processing are separate. A typed request, a button-initiated request, an app suggestion, or an enabled summary can still invoke Apple Intelligence. Review app-level features and the Apple Intelligence Report rather than checking only the wake-word switch.
“The Apple Intelligence Report is empty.”
Check the selected time range and whether you have made a request that might need server-side computation. An empty last-15-minutes report can be normal after a quiet period. An empty report does not establish that all Siri activity was local.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“A setting mentioned in a guide is missing.”
Check the iOS version, device model, language, and region. Apple documents regional and language limits, and some features require supported hardware. Update iOS only if your organization’s policies and device compatibility allow it; otherwise use the controls that are actually present rather than assuming a missing switch is hidden.
“I want Siri available, but not for one private app.”
Open Siri’s app list, select that app, and disable its learning and suggestion options individually. Also check the app’s own settings for Siri shortcuts or suggestion permissions. Removing one Search result does not necessarily remove every form of app learning, so inspect each available switch.
“I disabled improvement sharing. Does that erase old recordings?”
Not necessarily. Apple describes limits for requests older than six months and for reviewed samples no longer linked to the random identifier. Treat the setting as a choice about future optional sharing, not as a complete historical deletion mechanism.
A practical privacy-first setup
- Disable the “Siri” or “Hey Siri” wake phrase and use a button or Type to Siri if you do not need hands-free activation.
- Turn off learning and suggestions for apps containing health, financial, journal, work, or private-message data.
- Hide Lock Screen and Home Screen suggestions that could reveal your activity to someone viewing the phone.
- Disable summaries, smart replies, voicemail suggestions, and Journal prompts individually when their content or generated wording is not worth the convenience.
- Leave Apple Intelligence enabled only for the features you accept, or disable it broadly if you want the simplest rule.
- Turn off optional Siri and Dictation improvement sharing if you do not want to contribute audio or interaction history.
- Check Apple Intelligence Report after normal use, selecting seven days when you need a meaningful sample, and export the JSON record if you want to retain it.
- Recheck these settings after major iOS updates, changing region or language, adding sensitive apps, or enrolling the phone in an organization’s management system.
This configuration does not promise that every request remains on the iPhone. It aligns the controls Apple provides with a narrower goal: fewer accidental activations, less app-based personalization, fewer visible suggestions, and a clearer view of when Apple says Private Cloud Compute handled a request.
