Before signing up, read its current privacy policy and terms, identify every company that receives your text or uploads, and check how training, retention, memory and deletion work. Then share only what is necessary, avoid identifying details and sensitive files, secure the account, and test the service’s access and deletion controls.
Privacy decisions matter especially in grief because conversations can contain intimate memories, information about other people and recordings of someone who has died. An AI griefbot can offer a way to reflect, but it is not the deceased person and is not a replacement for trusted people or professional help.

Why an AI griefbot needs a higher privacy standard
A griefbot may receive material that is more revealing than ordinary customer-support chats: private memories, family conflicts, addresses, medical history, photographs, old messages and a loved one’s voice. The service may also create a persistent persona or “memory” from those conversations. That means you need to understand both the original upload and any information derived from it.

There is no single privacy model for all griefbots. One provider might prohibit model training but still send prompts to an external AI service to generate replies. Another might retain conversations while an account is active, use analytics, or keep backup copies after an apparent deletion. A label such as “private” or “not used for training” does not by itself answer who can process the content, for how long, or for what other purposes.

Use the service’s own policy as a set of promises to verify, not as an independent security audit. The important questions are specific: what is collected, why it is collected, which processors receive it, what is retained, what can be exported or erased, and when those actions take effect.
Read the policy for these answers before creating an account
Open the privacy policy, terms and account-settings documentation before you upload anything. Search within them for “conversation,” “prompt,” “memory,” “voice,” “subprocessor,” “training,” “retention,” “delete,” “backup,” “export,” “advertising,” “security” and “children.” A useful policy should answer the following:

If a policy is silent on a material point, ask support for a written answer. Do not assume that silence means the practice is harmless or prohibited.

AIGriefBot’s published privacy policy, last updated September 16, 2026, shows why the details matter. The statements below describe that policy only; they are not evidence about every griefbot, and the policy is provider documentation rather than an independent audit.

Share the minimum information needed
Keep ordinary conversations non-identifying
Describe the feeling or situation without supplying details that do not change the response. You can say “a relative” instead of a full name, omit an exact address, and avoid employer, school, phone number and account identifiers. Do not paste passwords, recovery codes, identity-document numbers, payment details or private keys. If a detail is not needed for the memorial interaction, leave it out.

Handle health and legal information cautiously
Medical diagnoses, therapy notes, medication lists, substance-use history and legal disputes can identify you or someone else and may be difficult to remove from derived memories. Ask whether the service is appropriate for that material before sharing it. An AI response is not medical, legal or crisis care.
Decide carefully about a loved one’s records
Before uploading photographs, old messages, diaries, videos or a voice recording, check the policy for each media type and every downstream provider. Consider making a text summary instead of uploading the original file. Get permission where another living person appears in a recording or message, and remove unrelated people’s details.
Do not assume anonymization is guaranteed
Replacing a name does not necessarily remove identity if the story includes a distinctive workplace, event, date or family relationship. Combine fewer details, generalize dates and remove unique clues where they are not essential.
Secure the account and review personalization
- Use a unique, long password. Do not reuse the password from email, social media or a financial account. Turn on multi-factor authentication or another account-security feature if the service offers one.
- Do not share account access. A friend or family member who needs support can create a separate account. Shared credentials make it harder to know who viewed, changed or deleted memories.
- Inspect memory and personalization controls. View the durable memories or profile notes, correct inaccuracies and delete entries that reveal more than necessary. Check whether disabling a feature stops future collection or only hides it from the interface.
- Review connected devices and sessions. Sign out of devices you no longer control, protect the phone or computer with a screen lock, and avoid using a public computer for private grief conversations.
- Limit notifications and previews. Lock-screen previews can expose a conversation to anyone nearby. Use the operating system’s notification settings to hide message content.
- Recheck settings after policy updates. A service can change retention, subprocessors or personalization practices. Save the policy version and date you relied on when you made an important decision.
Understand onward processing by AI and media providers
Generating a reply often requires an external model provider. Voice cloning or speech playback may require a separate voice provider; analytics and hosting may involve additional companies. The griefbot’s policy should say whether those providers receive full conversations, selected fields, persona profiles or raw media.
Ask support these precise questions:
- Which providers receive my text, photos, recordings or persona profile?
- Do those providers retain inputs, use them for their own model improvement or permit human review?
- Does a deletion request get forwarded to each provider, and is there a documented completion period?
- Are encrypted backups, logs, abuse-monitoring records and derived memory notes included?
- What happens if a provider is replaced or the service changes its processor list?
A promise that the griefbot itself does not train on your chats does not answer these questions. Treat each onward transfer as part of the privacy decision.

Test access, export and deletion instead of trusting a button
Find the controls before you depend on the service as a long-term memorial. A practical test uses non-sensitive material first.

- Locate your data view. Confirm that you can see conversations, profile information, uploaded media and derived memories. Note anything that is not visible.
- Request an export. Check whether the download contains readable chat text, original media, timestamps, persona data and memory notes, rather than only an account summary.
- Delete a single item. Remove a test conversation or memory and verify that it disappears from the interface and from search, history and personalization views.
- Ask about downstream copies. Request a written explanation of whether the AI or voice provider, logs and backups receive a deletion instruction.
- Delete the Companion or persona if offered. Determine whether this is narrower than deleting the whole account and what happens to the underlying conversations.
- Close the account when appropriate. Save the export first. Record the date, confirmation number and any stated deletion deadline.
- Verify after the stated period. Sign in only if the provider says access should remain available; otherwise ask support for confirmation. Do not assume that an inaccessible account proves that every copy was erased.
If the policy does not specify whether backups or downstream providers are covered, ask directly: “Which systems and processors will delete my data, what remains temporarily, and on what date will deletion be complete?” Keep the response.
What privacy rules may apply in different regions
United States
The Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Technology said in January 2024 that companies must honor privacy and confidentiality commitments wherever those commitments appear. It warned that retaining or using consumer data for another purpose without clear, conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent may violate the law, and that material omissions about collection or use can matter. The FTC’s concise formulation is: “There is no AI exemption from the laws on the books.” This is U.S. regulatory guidance, not individualized legal advice.
In September 2025, the FTC announced a 6(b) inquiry that sent orders to seven AI companion-chatbot companies seeking information about data disclosures and the use or sharing of personal information from conversations. That announcement describes an inquiry into company practices; it is not a finding that a particular griefbot broke the law.
United Kingdom
UK Information Commissioner’s Office guidance discusses rights such as erasure, portability and being informed about the use of personal data in AI training. Those rights have qualifications and depend on the circumstances. The page is marked as under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the live guidance and do not treat its wording as a permanent statement of every person’s entitlement.

European Union
The European Commission’s Article 50 FAQ says providers of directly interactive AI systems, including chatbots, must tell people they are interacting with AI unless that fact is obvious, with notice from the beginning of the first interaction. This is an AI-transparency duty, not a privacy seal. It does not establish how long a griefbot stores conversations, whether it shares them, or how deletion works.
Other locations
Rights and deadlines vary with your country, the provider’s location, the service contract and the type of data involved. Use the provider’s designated privacy contact and your local data-protection authority for jurisdiction-specific advice. Do not assume that a right available in the UK or EU automatically applies worldwide.

Use a simple decision rule after reading the policy and contacting support:
- Continue cautiously when collection, processors, retention, memory and deletion are clearly explained and match your comfort level.
- Limit use when the service is helpful but cannot answer a narrow question. Keep chats general, avoid uploads and disable optional personalization where possible.
- Stop and delete when the provider will not explain who receives your data, uses broad secondary-use language, or offers no credible access and deletion route.
Do not let emotional attachment to a persona pressure you into accepting terms you would reject for any other intimate service. Export what you are entitled to keep, then decide whether the benefit justifies the remaining exposure.
A framework for comparing two griefbots
Policy language alone cannot establish which service is safest, and it does not provide independent verification. If you are comparing products, record the same facts for each one:

| User controls | Can you view, correct, export and delete chats and memory notes without contacting support? |
| Security detail | Does the policy describe concrete protections and incident communication, or only use broad marketing language? |
| Jurisdiction | Where are you and the provider located, and which data-rights process applies? |
Keep this comparison factual. A longer policy is not automatically better, and a short promise is not automatically false; the decision depends on clarity, scope and your own tolerance for exposure.
When you have already shared something sensitive
You uploaded a password, financial detail or identity document
Change the exposed password immediately, contact the relevant bank or service if necessary, and use the griefbot’s deletion and support channels. Ask whether the item was sent to subprocessors and request confirmation of the systems covered by deletion.
You uploaded a voice, photo or private message
Delete the upload, the associated memory and any related conversation. Ask whether synthetic voice files, embeddings, thumbnails, logs and backups remain, and request the retention period for each item.
You disclosed another person’s information
Remove names and identifying details where the service allows it, and consider notifying the person if their privacy could be affected. Do not assume that deleting your visible copy erases every derived record.
You cannot find a deletion control
Use the policy’s privacy contact, state exactly what you want deleted, request the expected completion date and retain the response. If the provider does not respond, consult the data-protection or consumer-protection authority relevant to your location.
Protect the person behind the grief
Privacy controls reduce data exposure, but they do not make a griefbot a person. A generated reply can imitate a familiar style without preserving consciousness, memories or consent from the deceased. Avoid making major medical, financial or relationship decisions solely from its responses.
If grief becomes overwhelming, you feel unsafe, or you are thinking about harming yourself, contact a trusted person, a qualified mental-health professional or an emergency/crisis service available where you live. Keep those human channels separate from the griefbot’s data practices; a chatbot cannot guarantee confidentiality or provide emergency intervention.
