A smart display may involve microphones, a camera, sensors, setup information and account-linked activity; the data and controls vary by model, settings, account and region. One privacy toggle will not address every kind of collection.
1. Use the physical controls for microphones and cameras
Mute the microphone when you need privacy
Find the device’s physical microphone mute button or switch and use it during sensitive conversations or whenever voice control is unnecessary. A physical power control, a software setting and an indicator light are not interchangeable. The FTC advises: “If you want to be sure that sensitive information isn’t picked up by your smart speaker, check for a physical setting (like a button or a switch) that stops the device from listening.” FTC consumer advice
Controls differ by model. Amazon says the microphone-off button on Echo devices cuts microphone power; Google describes microphone controls and visible indicators when audio is sent. Disable or cover the camera if your model has one
Use a built-in physical shutter where available, or the model’s camera-off control. Amazon says most Echo Show devices include a built-in shutter. Google’s Nest Hub Max has a camera, while other Nest Hub models differ. If you consider a separate camera privacy cover, first check that it fits the camera location without covering sensors; it will not mute the microphone or stop other data collection. 2. Review and delete stored activity
Open the manufacturer’s current privacy or activity controls, review what is saved, and delete recordings or interaction history you do not need. If the account offers a shorter retention or auto-delete period, choose one that fits your needs. Google documents controls for reviewing and deleting Assistant activity; Amazon documents controls for reviewing and deleting voice history and choosing storage preferences. Exact menus and options can change, so use the current controls for your account rather than relying on a path that may not apply to your device or region. Deleting past activity and preventing future collection are separate tasks. Deletion does not by itself turn off a microphone, camera or optional sensing feature; change those controls separately if you want them disabled.

3. Turn off features you do not use
Check settings for optional functions such as personalization, voice recognition, video calling, home monitoring, sleep sensing and other sensor-based features. Disable any you do not need. What information is collected or processed depends on the feature and its permissions: Google says some services send audio or video to Google, while some information can be processed on the device. This does not mean every feature sends all raw data to the cloud, or that every feature works locally. Google’s privacy hub
4. Account for other people in the room
A display in a shared space may respond to household members or visitors, and its answers can be heard by others. Let people in your home know when microphone, camera, calling or monitoring functions are enabled. For a sensitive conversation, use the physical mute control or move the display outside the room. 5. Check the policy for your device and region
Google and Amazon describe different controls and data practices, and available settings may vary by model and geography. Google documents a mix of on-device processing and features that send audio or video to its services; Amazon describes hardware microphone and camera controls alongside account-level voice-history options. Consult the current privacy information and manual for your exact model rather than assuming another display has the same controls. Google’s privacy hub Amazon’s explanation of privacy controls
The FTC’s case page says Amazon agreed to overhaul deletion practices and implement privacy safeguards to settle charges involving Alexa data deletion and children’s privacy. 6. Consider local smart-home control if that is your priority
Home Assistant is one option for people who want more local management. Its publisher says the platform runs on user-owned home hardware, stores data locally and communicates directly with supported devices over a local network; optional Home Assistant Cloud services are available for selected uses. It requires compatible equipment and setup, and it is not a drop-in replacement for every smart-display assistant or voice feature. Home Assistant privacy FAQ
