How to Protect Your Privacy When a Toothbrush Records Images of Your Mouth

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, verify the premise. The official product information available for connected toothbrushes does not establish that a consumer toothbrush itself has a mouth-imaging camera. A phone camera used by a companion or study app is a different system from sensors inside the brush. Identify your exact brush, app and country before changing settings or assuming that images exist.

Once you know which component requests the camera, you can deny optional access, limit cloud syncing and sharing, and use the product’s documented access or deletion process. Do not promise yourself that images are deleted or that the brush works offline until the model’s privacy notice confirms it.

What might be recording an image?

The phrase “my toothbrush records images” can describe several different arrangements. They have different privacy controls, so start by separating them.

Component What it can collect Where to check
Toothbrush hardware Brushing movements, pressure, timing or other sensor readings. The official material reviewed for the Oral-B iO Series 10 describes connected features but does not say the brush contains a camera. Model specifications, setup guide and product-specific privacy notice.
Companion phone app A phone camera can capture still images or video if the app requests camera permission. The phone, rather than the brush, is then the imaging device. iOS or Android permission screen and the app’s privacy notice.
Research or coaching app A separate study may record video showing a participant’s face, mouth, teeth and brushing behavior. The study consent form and the separate app’s privacy notice.
Cloud account Brushing records, account details and possibly media uploaded from the phone, subject to the service’s stated retention and sharing rules. Account dashboard, synchronization settings and regional terms.

The Philips Sonicare Research App privacy notice is explicit that the app needs camera permission to record video and that footage may show the participant’s face, mouth, teeth and brushing behavior. That is evidence about a phone-camera research app; it is not evidence that an ordinary Sonicare brush, or every connected toothbrush, records video.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An Oral-B Denmark disclosure issued under the EU Data Act describes brushing habits, app settings and preferences. It does not describe mouth images. Its terms apply to that regional disclosure and should not be generalized to every Oral-B user or country.

Step 1: Identify the exact device, app and jurisdiction

Find the model

Read the model name and number on the handle, charging base, box or Bluetooth pairing screen. Record the firmware version if the app shows it. Similar-looking handles can use different apps and privacy terms.

List every related app

Write down the main brushing app, any beta or coaching app, and any study app you installed separately. A camera request from a study app should not be attributed to the brush’s ordinary companion app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the terms for your country

Privacy notices, data-rights menus and retention periods can differ by country. The Oral-B EU Data Act disclosure is a regional example, not a universal policy. Select your country in the manufacturer’s support site and read the notice linked from the app you actually use.

Step 2: See which app has camera access

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy & Security, then Camera.
  3. Review every listed brushing, coaching and study app. Turn off access for an app that does not need imaging for a feature you use.
  4. Return to Privacy & Security and inspect Bluetooth, Microphone, Photos and, where shown, Local Network. These permissions are separate from camera access.

Labels can move between operating-system releases. If an app is absent from the Camera list, it has not requested that permission on the device; it may still request it later when a feature is opened.

On an Android phone

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps or App management.
  2. Select the brushing or study app, then Permissions.
  3. Set Camera to Don’t allow when imaging is unnecessary. Review Nearby devices or Bluetooth, Microphone, Photos and videos and Location separately.
  4. Use Android’s privacy dashboard, when available, to see recent camera use and the app responsible.

Android manufacturers use different menu names. The app-permission page is the authoritative place for the phone in your hand.

Check the in-app explanation

Open the feature that triggered the request without granting it, if the operating system allows. Note whether the app explains a specific function such as posture coaching or a study recording. A generic request with no clear purpose is a reason to leave access disabled and ask the developer for clarification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Decide whether camera access is necessary

Classify the permission before accepting it:

  • Required for a feature you want: Grant it only while using that feature if your phone offers a one-time or limited-use choice. Confirm what is recorded, who receives it and how long it is kept.
  • Optional coaching: Deny it and continue using non-camera brushing functions. The app may disable only the visual coaching feature; its documentation should state the effect.
  • Research participation: Treat consent separately from ordinary product use. Read the study’s recording, transfer, retention and withdrawal terms before joining.
  • Unexplained request: Deny access, capture the permission screen for your records and contact support using the model and app version.

Revoking permission later does not necessarily erase media already uploaded. It stops future access by the app; deletion requires the service’s documented process.

Step 4: Read the privacy notice for the real data flow

Search the notice for concrete answers rather than relying on a short permission pop-up. Make a note of:

  • Whether the camera captures photographs, continuous video, short clips or only an analysis performed on the phone.
  • Whether the image includes your face, mouth, teeth, children or other people in the background.
  • Whether processing happens on the phone, on the brush, on a company server or through a research partner.
  • Which account, device identifier, Bluetooth identifier or advertising identifier is attached to a recording.
  • Whether uploading is automatic, optional, required for a feature or triggered only after you press a record button.
  • Who can receive the data, including service providers, study sponsors or other recipients named in the notice.
  • The retention period, backup treatment and criteria for deleting derived analyses as well as the original video.
  • How to request access, correction, portability or erasure in your country.

Do not infer image collection from the mere presence of Bluetooth or motion sensors. The Oral-B UK THG privacy policy gives examples of smart-device, sensor and mobile-app data, while the Oral-B EU disclosure specifies brushing habits, settings and preferences. Neither statement, as described, establishes mouth-image recording.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Step 5: Control syncing, accounts and sharing

Reduce unnecessary cloud copies

In the app, look for settings named Cloud sync, Backup, Personalized coaching, Research participation or Improve the product. Turn off optional uploads only after checking what functionality will stop. Some apps keep recent sessions locally and upload when a connection returns; others require an account for history or coaching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure the account that holds brushing data

  • Use a unique password and enable multi-factor authentication if offered.
  • Review signed-in devices and remove phones you no longer own.
  • Do not share the account with family members if the profile can expose images or health-related routines.
  • Check whether a social, advertising or analytics connection is enabled and disconnect it when unnecessary.

Limit the phone’s background access

Disable background refresh, unrestricted battery use or automatic uploads only if the app’s documentation says brushing still synchronizes when opened manually. Blocking Bluetooth or nearby-device access can prevent pairing, while blocking camera access affects only camera-dependent functions. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the result.

Step 6: Request access or deletion correctly

Use the documented route first

Save the account email, device model, app version and the date of any recording. Ask the provider to identify image files, extracted frames, biometric or facial information, transcripts, derived coaching scores and backups associated with your account. Request confirmation of what was deleted and what must be retained by law, if anything.

Oral-B EU Data Act example

The Oral-B Denmark EU Data Act disclosure says brushing data is generated during active brushing sessions, stored on the brush and stored remotely when connected to the app. It states a capacity of up to 500 sessions on the brush and remote retention of up to 48 months. The same disclosure directs users to request access to or erasure of brushing data through the app’s Legal menu under EU Data Act. These are policy terms for that EU disclosure, accessed October 11, 2026; they are not evidence of image storage or a worldwide retention period.

Do not assume deletion of images

If the notice never confirms that images are collected, it cannot confirm where they are stored or how they are erased. Camera permission revocation, deleting the app, deleting a local clip and closing an online account are different actions. Ask specifically about server copies, backups, derived measurements and data shared with a study or service provider.

Step 7: Verify what happens without guessing

  1. With camera permission disabled, open the brushing app and record which ordinary functions still work.
  2. Open the camera-dependent feature and note the exact error or explanation. Do not grant access merely to dismiss a prompt.
  3. Check the app’s history after one normal brushing session. Look for a thumbnail, video, upload indicator or consent record.
  4. Review the phone’s privacy dashboard or camera access log for the app and time of use.
  5. Check account settings on the service’s website or app for synchronized media, sharing and deletion controls.
  6. Restore only the permissions needed for the feature you have decided to use.

This procedure shows what your installation does at the time of testing; an app update, a new study or a different country setting can change behavior. Recheck after major updates.

Common situations and the safest response

What you see Likely explanation Privacy response
The brush pairs over Bluetooth but never asks for Camera. Pairing and motion or pressure sensing do not by themselves prove imaging. Keep Camera denied and read the model’s notice for sensor and account data.
A phone app asks for Camera when you open visual coaching. The phone may be the camera, with processing or uploading controlled by the app. Read the coaching feature’s explanation; allow only if its recording and retention terms are acceptable.
A study coordinator sends a separate app invitation. The study, not ordinary brushing, may be collecting video. Review the consent form, withdrawal process and study retention policy before installing or granting access.
Camera access was granted in the past and you now regret it. Previously captured or uploaded media may remain even after permission is revoked. Revoke Camera, disable sync, then submit an access and erasure request covering originals, derivatives and backups.
Deleting the app appears to remove the history. Local data may be gone while account or server data remains. Sign in to the service’s account controls or contact its privacy channel for written confirmation.

What current consumer-IoT guidance expects

On June 11, 2026, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office published “Setting out our expectations for the smart device industry.” Its consumer-IoT expectations emphasize privacy protections by default, collection limited to what is necessary, opt-in consent and clear explanations of data use. William Malcolm, the ICO’s Executive Director for Regulatory Risk and Innovation, described the sensitivity this way: “Connected devices process some of the most sensitive data about people’s lives, from data about health to daily routines and family life.”

Those expectations are guidance, not proof that a particular toothbrush complies or that a particular recording is lawful in your country. They are a useful standard for evaluating whether a camera request is explained, necessary and controllable.

How to compare a connected toothbrush setup

If you are choosing between models or deciding whether to keep an app, compare the documented attributes below. Do not fill a cell from marketing language or assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question Why it matters Evidence to require
Is Camera permission requested? It identifies whether the phone may image your mouth. Permission screen plus feature-specific explanation.
Where is the camera? A phone camera, an onboard camera and a separate study device create different risks. Hardware specifications and privacy notice.
Is an account or cloud connection required? Required accounts increase the number of systems holding your data. Setup requirements and offline behavior documented for your region.
What is shared? Images, brushing metrics and derived scores may have different recipients. Recipient categories and transfer disclosures.
How long is data kept? Retention determines how long a mistake or breach can matter. Specific periods for originals, analyses and backups.
Can you access and erase it? A practical remedy is more useful than a general privacy promise. Exact menu, web form or regional rights procedure.
Can coaching work without images? You may retain useful reminders while avoiding camera capture. Documented non-camera mode and its limitations.

A non-connected option

A manual toothbrush is a straightforward physical alternative for someone who does not want a companion app or Bluetooth account. It is not necessary to replace a device merely because an online claim says a toothbrush takes pictures. First verify whether your own model, app and country actually involve image capture; then choose the least-connected setup that still meets your brushing needs.

Privacy checklist

  • Record the exact brush model, firmware, app names and country.
  • Check Camera permission for every related app.
  • Read the product, coaching and study privacy notices separately.
  • Determine whether recordings are phone-only, uploaded or processed by a third party.
  • Deny or revoke optional Camera access.
  • Review Bluetooth, nearby-device, microphone, photos and location permissions.
  • Turn off optional cloud sync and sharing after checking feature effects.
  • Secure the account with a unique password and multi-factor authentication.
  • Request access and erasure for originals, derivatives and backups.
  • Recheck permissions and sync after app or firmware updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bluetooth pairing prove that a toothbrush has a camera?

No. Bluetooth can carry brushing-session or sensor data without any image capture. Camera access and the model-specific privacy notice are the relevant evidence.

Will denying Camera stop all brushing functions?

Not necessarily. It can disable a visual-coaching or recording feature, while pairing and ordinary sensor-based tracking may continue. The app should describe the feature impact for your model.

Is the 500-session and 48-month figure an image-retention promise?

No. Those figures come from an Oral-B Denmark EU Data Act disclosure describing brushing data storage. The disclosure does not establish mouth-image collection or image retention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask a study using a toothbrush camera?

Ask whether the phone records continuously or in clips, whether your face and other people appear, where files are processed, who receives them, how long originals and derived measurements remain, and how to withdraw and request deletion.

Can deleting the app erase videos already uploaded?

Not by itself. Uninstalling usually affects local data; server copies, backups and derived records require the service’s account or privacy-deletion process.
