How to protect your privacy on a new social network

Protecting privacy on a new social network takes two kinds of control: limiting what other people can see and limiting what the service, your device, and connected accounts can collect or infer. Before posting, minimize the personal details you provide, tighten audience and discovery settings, deny unnecessary device permissions, secure the account with a unique password and multifactor authentication (MFA), and learn how deletion and data retention work.

What privacy means on a social network

Privacy is not just a locked profile. A network may collect signals you never type into a profile, including location, device information, activity patterns, contacts, and interactions. Those signals can be used for recommendations, personalization, advertising, security checks, or other purposes described in the service’s policies. Other users can also copy, screenshot, download, or redistribute material that they were allowed to view.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Think of setup as a series of separate decisions:

  • Audience: which people can see each post, story, profile field, follower list, or tag.
  • Discoverability: whether someone can find or be suggested your account through your email address, phone number, contacts, or a public search engine.
  • Collection: what the service and its partners can obtain from your activity, device, and connected accounts.
  • Access: which apps and devices can use your contacts, photos, camera, microphone, files, or location.
  • Account security: how well a stolen password can be resisted and how the account can be recovered.
  • Exit: what can be downloaded or deleted, how long records remain, and what other people may already have copied.

Before you create the account, decide what to disclose

Supply only details needed for your purpose

Pause at each registration field. Ask whether the service actually needs your legal name, personal phone number, exact birthday, address, employer, school, contacts, or a profile photograph for the way you intend to use it. A public-facing professional identity may require more information than a private interest account. Do not provide extra details merely because a form labels them “optional.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an email address and phone number only when their privacy consequences are acceptable. A phone number can help with recovery but can also make an account easier for acquaintances to find. If a service requires a real-world identity or age verification, read how that information is stored and whether it is displayed to other users.

Read the sections that answer four practical questions

Before accepting the terms, find the privacy-policy passages covering:

  • what information is collected directly and what is inferred from activity or device signals;
  • which affiliates, service providers, advertisers, or other parties receive information;
  • how long information is retained, including backups and security logs; and
  • how to access, export, correct, or delete account data, and what exceptions apply.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) advises considering exposure to the platform itself, not only exposure to other users. Policies can change, so save the current account-help and privacy pages or note the date you reviewed them.

Set the smallest useful audience and reduce discoverability

Find the account privacy and audience controls

Menu names differ by network, app version, device, and account type. Look under settings labeled Privacy, Audience, Visibility, How people find you, Safety, or similar. Set the default audience to the smallest group that still serves your purpose. A private-account switch may limit who can follow you, but it does not automatically hide every profile field, comment, message, or interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check each category separately:

Control What to check Safer starting choice
Posts and comments Default audience and whether comments can be reshared or quoted Followers, approved contacts, or a custom list rather than public
Stories or short-lived posts Audience, replies, sharing, archives, and automatic cross-posting Approved viewers; disable automatic sharing you do not need
Profile fields Birthday, workplace, school, city, relationship status, links, and profile photo Hide fields that are not necessary for recognition or the feature you use
Followers and following Whether lists are visible and whether anyone can follow without approval Require approval where the service permits it
Tags and mentions Who may tag or mention you and whether tags appear automatically Require review before a tag appears on your profile
Search and suggestions Matching by email, phone number, uploaded contacts, or public search engines Disable each discovery route that you do not need
Messages and calls Who can send requests, add you to groups, or call you Limit to people you follow or approve

Facebook’s help documentation illustrates the kinds of controls a network may expose—profile details, posts, stories, followers, tagging, blocking, and ways people find and contact you—but those settings are platform-specific examples, not universal defaults.

Test the result instead of trusting a label

Use the network’s “view as” or profile-preview feature if available. Otherwise, ask a trusted person who is not connected to the account what they can see, or inspect the profile from a private browser session while signed out. Check an individual post’s audience before publishing; a private default does not override a post that you deliberately mark public.

Review every post for unintended clues

Remove information that exposes your routine

Do not publish a home address, access code, regular commute, children’s school, medical appointment, or a live description of where you are unless the audience and timing are appropriate. A sequence of ordinary posts can reveal a routine even when no single post contains an address. Delay travel updates until you have left, and consider whether a public event announcement identifies when your home will be empty.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Check other people and the image itself

Obtain consent before posting identifiable people, especially children or people who may face professional or personal consequences. Review the background for badges, documents, street signs, screens, and reflections. A location tag can disclose where you are; an original photo may also contain metadata indicating where and when it was taken. Remove a location tag and use a copy that has had unnecessary metadata stripped when the feature or operating system allows it.

Remember that “temporary” is not permanent

Stories, disappearing messages, and limited-audience posts can still be captured, forwarded, or recorded. Treat anything visible to another person as potentially durable. If a detail would cause harm if copied, do not upload it merely because the interface promises automatic deletion.

Audit app permissions on your phone and computer

Match each permission to a feature you will actually use

Profile privacy and device permissions are separate. An account can be private while the app continuously receives contacts or precise location. Open the operating system’s app-permission screen after installation and compare every request with a feature you intend to use.

Permission Reasonable use case When to deny or narrow it
Contacts Finding friends or inviting people from your address book Deny if you do not need friend-finding; contact upload can expose information about people who never joined
Location Adding a place to a post, local features, or location-based safety tools Choose “while using” or approximate location where offered; disable for ordinary posting
Photos and files Selecting images or videos to upload Use selected-item access rather than the entire library when the operating system offers it
Camera Taking a photo, video, or video call inside the app Deny until needed; revoke after a one-time use if appropriate
Microphone Recording a video, voice message, or call Deny for a text-only account and watch for the operating system’s microphone indicator
Storage or nearby devices Saving media, sharing to another device, or hardware features Deny when the feature is irrelevant; re-enable only for a specific task

Use the narrowest operating-system option

When available, select Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, Approximate location, or Selected photos instead of continuous, precise, or full-library access. Permission names vary between Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and versions of those systems. Recheck them after an app update because new features can trigger new prompts.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that some apps request access to device information or features they do not need. A request is not proof of misuse, but it is a reason to pause and either deny it or verify the feature that requires it.

Secure the login and recovery path

Use a password that exists nowhere else

Create a long, unique password for the network. Reusing an email or shopping password lets a compromise on one service unlock the others. Store the password in a protected password manager if that fits your security practices, and do not send it to someone offering “verification” or account recovery.

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Turn on multifactor authentication

MFA requires a second verification step beyond the password. Enable it under Security, Login, or Two-factor authentication, then save recovery codes in a secure place that is not the same account you are protecting. CISA recommends MFA for social-media accounts and describes authenticator apps as more protective than text-message or email codes. Text and email methods still improve on password-only access when stronger options are unavailable.

Choose a method the service, device, and browser support reliably. A compatible FIDO2 security key can provide hardware-backed authentication, but it is optional and cannot be assumed to work with every network. Facebook’s account documentation, for example, describes support for third-party U2F or FIDO2 keys while warning that browser and device compatibility matters. Register a backup method before losing the primary device.

Protect recovery as carefully as the main login

Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, trusted devices, active sessions, and backup codes. Remove devices you no longer own. If the service offers alerts for new logins or password changes, enable them. Recovery questions based on public facts—such as a school or hometown—are weak; use a method that does not expose answers on your profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with contacts and linked accounts

Understand what contact uploads do

“Find friends” may upload names, phone numbers, or email addresses from your address book. That can reveal relationships involving people who did not consent to the upload and can improve the service’s ability to suggest accounts. Decline contact access unless the feature is essential. If you previously enabled it, look for a setting to disconnect and delete uploaded contacts; turning off future syncing may not remove data already stored.

Read the consequences of account linking

Account centers and cross-service logins can make sign-in easier but may also enable connected experiences, shared information, personalization, advertising, or account suggestions. Meta says its Accounts Center can use information across linked accounts for such connected features. That behavior is specific to Meta’s products, but it demonstrates why you should inspect what linking permits before accepting it. Use separate accounts when separation is more important than convenience.

Location deserves its own review

Turn off background and precise location by default

Disable location sharing and location tagging unless a feature genuinely needs them. Precise, continuous location can reveal home, work, religious or medical visits, and habitual routes. If you need a local feature, grant approximate or while-using access where possible, then revoke it afterward.

Yubico - Security Key NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Key, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Check location in photos and posts

Review the post composer for a place label, map attachment, or automatic check-in. Inspect camera and photo settings for geotagging controls. Location can be disclosed by the image itself even when no label is visible, so consider sharing a processed copy rather than the original when location metadata is unnecessary. The FTC specifically advises deciding when location sharing makes sense and disabling it when it does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for moderation, blocking, and unwanted contact

Privacy also depends on what you can do when another account becomes intrusive. Find the controls to block, mute, restrict, report, remove a follower, limit replies, and approve tags. Blocking usually affects one account, while a person may create another; avoid public arguments that disclose more information. Save evidence of threats or harassment before reporting if doing so is safe, and use the platform’s emergency or law-enforcement guidance for credible danger.

Review who can add you to groups, send message requests, mention you, or comment on your posts. A network with granular controls may be preferable to one that offers only a single public/private switch.

Compare networks before committing

No single network can be named the privacy winner without knowing the candidates, country, account type, and current version. Use the following comparison axes when evaluating services:

Question Evidence to look for Why it matters
What is public by default? New-account audience, profile fields, search visibility, and indexing by public search engines Defaults affect exposure before you find every setting
Can discovery be limited? Separate controls for email, phone, contacts, suggestions, and search engines People may identify an account without seeing its posts
Are tags and messages controllable? Approval, restriction, blocking, group-invite, and reply controls Other users can create exposure through interactions
What permissions are required? Whether contacts, precise location, photos, camera, or microphone are mandatory Required access increases collection even on a private profile
Which MFA methods exist? Authenticator app, security key, text, email, backup codes, and session management Stronger login options reduce takeover risk
What happens to data? Collection, sharing, retention, export, deletion, backups, and official-request processes Policy clarity determines your ability to make an informed choice
Can you leave cleanly? Accessible account deletion, data download, contact-upload deletion, and confirmation of completion Leaving should not depend on finding a hidden form after a crisis

Compare the actual settings screens and policy language for the edition you will use. Controls can differ by geography, age, profile type, operating system, and whether you use a web browser or mobile app.

Understand deletion, copies, and retention

Deleting a post is not the same as erasing every copy

Removing an item from your profile may stop ordinary access through that page, but it cannot retrieve screenshots, downloads, quoted posts, or copies stored by other people. “Disappearing” content has the same limitation. Treat publication as a transfer of control, not a temporary loan.

Prepare an exit before you need it

Locate the service’s export and deletion tools while the account is in good standing. Download records you are entitled to keep, review connected apps, revoke active sessions, and disconnect contact syncing. Read whether deletion is immediate or delayed, whether backups and fraud-prevention records are retained, and whether legal obligations create exceptions. Keep confirmation of a deletion request, but do not assume it removes material already copied elsewhere.

A repeatable privacy checkup

Use this checklist after initial setup, after major feature changes, and at regular intervals:

  1. Review profile fields and remove details that no longer serve a purpose.
  2. Confirm the default audience and inspect a recent post, story, comment, and tag individually.
  3. Turn off email, phone, contact, and public-search discovery you do not need.
  4. Check followers, following lists, mentions, message requests, group invites, and blocking controls.
  5. Open the device permission screen and narrow contacts, location, photos, camera, microphone, and storage access.
  6. Inspect location tags and photo metadata before sharing.
  7. Confirm the password is unique, MFA is active, recovery codes are stored safely, and old sessions are signed out.
  8. Review linked accounts, account centers, connected apps, and contact-upload history.
  9. Read policy changes and revisit collection, sharing, retention, and deletion choices.
  10. Verify that you know how to export and delete the account if you decide to leave.

The FTC’s consumer guidance puts the principle plainly: “Find out how to turn on privacy settings for devices, apps, and social media accounts — then do it.”

Common mistakes and practical fixes

“My account is private, so everything is private.”

Fix: Check each audience, profile field, tag, message, and discovery setting. Private-account labels do not control device permissions or what an approved viewer copies.

“The app needs all permissions to work.”

Fix: Test the feature that prompted the request. Grant selected photos, approximate location, or while-using access when available, and deny unrelated permissions.

“I will enable MFA later.”

Fix: Enable it during registration, store recovery codes, and register a backup method before you depend on the account.

“Deleting the app deletes my account.”

Fix: Use the service’s account-deletion process, then verify the status. Uninstalling software usually removes it from your device, not from the provider’s systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A friend-finder is harmless.”

Fix: Decline contact upload unless essential, and look for a control to delete previously uploaded address-book data.

Bottom line for a new account

Start with minimal profile information, a non-public default audience, disabled discovery routes, and no unnecessary permissions. Inspect every post for location and routine clues, secure the unique login with MFA, treat contact uploads and linked accounts as data-sharing decisions, and learn the export and deletion process before you need it. Recheck these choices whenever the service, app, device, or account type changes.
