You cannot make ordinary web and app use completely invisible, but you can substantially reduce routine tracking and unnecessary data collection. Use several layers together: choose stricter browser privacy controls, limit cookies and permissions, review advertising identifiers, make deliberate choices in cookie notices, and check connected devices such as smart TVs. Each layer covers different techniques and can cause different compatibility problems.
How and why do websites and apps track you online?
Tracking is the collection and correlation of information about what you do, which device you use, and sometimes where you are. Companies use it to remember settings, measure visits, deliver advertising, detect fraud, personalize content, or build profiles. The same mechanism can serve a useful function and still reveal more about your behavior than you intended.

First-party tracking versus third-party tracking
First-party tracking is performed by the site or app you are actively using. A shopping site may remember items in a cart, while a news site may record which stories you opened. Third-party tracking is performed by another company embedded in that site, such as an advertising, analytics, video, or social-media service. Because the same third party can appear on many unrelated sites, it may connect activity across those sites. MDN uses “third-party cookie” for a cookie associated with a site other than the one shown in your address bar.

This distinction matters when you choose a control. Blocking cross-site cookies can reduce a common form of third-party tracking without necessarily preventing the first-party cookie needed to keep you signed in. A strict setting can nevertheless affect embedded services that depend on third-party storage.

Cookies and pixels
A cookie is data stored by a browser and sent back to a site. It can hold a session identifier, preferences, or an identifier used for advertising and analytics. A tracking pixel is usually a tiny image or a script request that tells a company that a page, message, or advert was loaded. The FTC notes that a cookie or pixel can continue identifying activity after you leave the original site when the same company is present elsewhere.
Cookies are not the only issue. Deleting them can sign you out and erase preferences, but it does not erase records that a company already stored on its servers. Clearing local data is therefore a reset of the browser, not a recall of data already collected.
Device fingerprinting
Fingerprinting combines characteristics of a browser and device—such as software settings, screen properties, and other signals—to recognize a device without relying on one ordinary cookie. It is harder to manage with a single “delete cookies” action. Browser anti-fingerprinting features can reduce uniqueness, but they may also make some sites behave differently. No setting should be described as blocking every fingerprinting technique.

Phones and tablets expose advertising identifiers that apps can use for personalization and measurement. An advertising company may also correlate activity across devices or environments using sign-ins, shared identifiers, or other signals. Turning off personalized advertising changes how ads are selected; it does not remove ads or guarantee that every form of measurement stops.
Set a realistic privacy goal
The practical goal is to reduce routine tracking and unnecessary exposure while keeping the services you actually need. Privacy controls are not the same as anonymity. A site can still see activity while you are using it, an account can associate activity with you when you sign in, and a company may retain information collected before you changed a setting.
- Reduce: cross-site identifiers, unnecessary app permissions, and personalized advertising signals.
- Control: which sites receive cookies, which apps receive location or photos, and which devices participate in ad personalization.
- Accept deliberately: a small amount of breakage or repeated sign-in when the privacy benefit is worth it.
- Verify: that an important site, app, or connected device still works after each change.
Think in layers rather than searching for one perfect tool. A browser setting may address cross-site cookies, while a phone permission controls location access and a connected-TV menu controls viewing-data collection. Gaps in one layer are partly covered by another.

Built-in controls are free, apply before you install anything, and are maintained with the browser. Labels and defaults change, so use the privacy or security section of the browser you actually use and check its current help documentation.

Most browsers offer a standard protection level and a stricter option. A balanced mode usually blocks known or suspicious cross-site activity while preserving more compatibility. A strict mode blocks more cookies or tracker requests and can reduce profiling further, but it is more likely to interfere with logins, embedded video, payment widgets, comments, social sign-in, or other content supplied by a different company.
Firefox’s documentation says that Total Cookie Protection is enabled in its Standard mode. It confines a cookie to the site where it was created instead of allowing that cookie to follow you across unrelated sites. This is an example of why the browser and version must be named when describing a feature; another browser may use a different technology, label, or default.
Review cookie and site-data settings
- Open the browser’s Settings or Preferences.
- Open the section labeled Privacy, Privacy and security, or a similar name.
- Find Cookies, Site data, or Tracking protection.
- Prefer an option that blocks cross-site or third-party cookies when your browser offers that choice.
- Read the exception list. Remove old exceptions and keep only sites you intentionally trust and need.
- Close and reopen a site after changing the setting, then test sign-in, checkout, media, and other essential functions.
A site-specific exception is a compromise, not a failure. If a trusted service breaks under a stricter setting, allow only that site rather than weakening protection everywhere. Revisit the exception periodically because a site’s ownership, embedded services, or privacy practices can change.
Clear cookies, history, and stored site data when it helps
Use the browser’s Clear browsing data command to remove cookies, cached files, history, or site permissions. Select the categories deliberately: clearing everything can sign you out of every account and remove settings you rely on. Clearing data is useful after using a shared computer, after visiting a sensitive site, or when you want to discard accumulated identifiers. It does not delete information already held by websites, advertisers, or analytics companies.
Understand private-browsing windows
Private or incognito browsing generally limits what is retained locally after the window closes, such as history and some cookies. It does not make you invisible while the window is open. The site you visit, an embedded third party, your employer or school network, and your internet provider may still observe traffic under their own policies. Treat private browsing as a local-record convenience, not an anti-tracking shield.

Make deliberate choices in cookie notices
When a site presents a cookie or privacy banner, look for a control such as Manage choices, Reject optional cookies, or Necessary cookies only. Select the least-collection option that still lets you use the service. Necessary cookies may support sign-in, security, language, or a shopping cart; optional categories commonly include analytics, personalization, and advertising.
A consent choice is not a guarantee that all other collection stops. The site can still process information needed to operate the service, and a third party may have a separate relationship with you. If a banner offers only an “Accept” button and no meaningful settings, you can decide whether the service is worth using, leave the page, or look for its account-level privacy controls.
Keep a record of important choices mentally or in a password manager note. Banners often reappear after you clear cookies, change browsers, or use a different device because consent is stored locally or separately for each service.

Lock down phone and tablet data access
App permissions determine whether an app can request information such as location, contacts, photos, a microphone, or a camera. An app may have a legitimate reason for one permission but not another. Review permissions on each device rather than assuming an account-wide change will cover every phone or tablet.
- Open the device’s Settings, then open Privacy, Permissions, or Permission manager.
- Review sensitive categories individually: location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone, and nearby devices.
- For each app, choose the narrowest option that supports its function—for example, While using instead of Always, or selected photos instead of the entire library.
- Set unused permissions to Deny and remove permissions from apps you no longer use.
- Recheck after an app update, because new features can introduce new requests.
Location deserves special attention. Navigation and delivery apps may need it while active; a flashlight or simple calculator generally does not. Contacts and photo libraries can expose information about other people, not just you, so grant access only when the feature requires it.
Review advertising identifiers and personalization
Open the device’s advertising or privacy menu and look for controls to reset, limit, or disable use of the advertising identifier. Also inspect personalization controls in major app accounts. These settings can reduce interest-based advertising and make the identifier less useful for profiling, but they do not remove advertising, stop every analytics request, or delete historical records. Each relevant device and account may need its own setting.
Check smart TVs and streaming devices
Internet-connected televisions and streaming boxes can collect viewing, search, voice, or device-use information. Their menus differ by manufacturer and software version, so open the device’s Settings and look under Privacy, Advertising, Viewing data, or Diagnostics.
- Turn off personalized advertising or advertising-ID use when the device offers that choice.
- Disable viewing-data or automatic-content-recognition features unless you deliberately want them.
- Review microphone and voice-assistant permissions, including whether listening is enabled when the device appears idle.
- Limit diagnostic sharing to what is necessary for support.
- Repeat the review after a major software update or when you add a new streaming app.
Opting out of personalization does not necessarily stop the device from showing adverts or collecting data needed to provide the service. It changes the permitted use of some data; read the device’s explanation before choosing.
Use ad blockers with clear expectations
An ad-blocking extension or browser feature can prevent some advertising requests, pixels, and known tracker scripts from loading. The FTC cautions that an ad blocker may not block every advert or tracking method, and it is not a malware detector. It also cannot undo data a company collected before the block was installed.

Choose an extension from a reputable source, keep it updated, and inspect the permissions it requests. A blocker that can read or change data on every website has broad power; install only what you understand. Some sites will ask you to disable the blocker, show a reduced page, or refuse access. Decide case by case whether the content is worth a narrowly scoped exception.
Blocking can also affect accessibility tools, payment forms, embedded media, and login flows. If something fails, test the site with the extension paused for that domain, then re-enable it immediately afterward. Do not treat an ad blocker as a substitute for browser settings, app-permission review, or account privacy controls.
Compare the main privacy controls
| Control | What it can reduce | Where it applies | Common trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-site cookie blocking | Many third-party cookie-based identifiers | One browser on one device unless separately configured elsewhere | Embedded media, social sign-in, or widgets may fail |
| Browser tracking protection | Known tracker requests and, in some browsers, cross-site storage or fingerprinting signals | The browser and its supported versions | Protection and defaults vary; strict modes can break pages |
| Clearing cookies and site data | Identifiers and permissions stored locally | The selected browser profile or device | Signs you out and does not erase server-side records |
| Private browsing | Some local history and session data after closing the window | That private session | Websites and networks can still observe activity |
| App-permission controls | Unnecessary location, contacts, photos, camera, or microphone access | The selected phone or tablet | Features that need the permission may stop working |
| Advertising-ID and personalization controls | Some interest-based ad selection and identifier use | Each relevant device or account | Ads remain; other measurement may continue |
| Ad-blocking software | Some adverts, pixels, and known tracker scripts | Usually one browser profile | Not comprehensive, and websites may request an exception |
| Connected-device privacy settings | Selected viewing, voice, advertising, and diagnostic collection | That TV or streaming device and its apps | Menus vary and some service data remains necessary |
Diagnose breakage without abandoning privacy
A login loop or missing embedded content
First identify whether the page uses a sign-in provider, payment processor, video host, or other embedded service from another domain. Temporarily allow third-party cookies or pause the blocker for the site, reload, and test again. If it works, create a site-specific exception rather than switching the entire browser to a permissive mode. Remove the exception if you stop using the service.
A page looks incomplete or buttons do nothing
Open the browser’s site-information panel and check whether scripts, pop-ups, or cross-site requests were blocked. Allow only the category required for the function, reload, and test. If the page still fails, clear that site’s stored data and sign in again. Record which change fixed the problem so you can reverse it later.
An app loses a feature after a permission change
Return to the app’s permission entry and grant the narrowest temporary access available. For example, allow location only while the app is open or select individual photos. If the feature does not need the permission after all, leave it denied and contact the developer rather than granting broad access automatically.
Ads remain after opting out of personalization
This is expected. Personalization controls affect ad selection, not the existence of ad space. Check that the advertising identifier setting was changed on the correct device, then review the app or account’s separate privacy menu. Remaining ads do not prove that the setting failed.

Best Value
A maintenance routine that keeps controls effective
- Monthly: review browser extensions, site exceptions, and recently granted app permissions.
- After an update: check browser privacy defaults, phone permission prompts, and smart-TV privacy menus.
- When installing an app: deny optional permissions at first; grant them later only when a feature genuinely requires them.
- When a service changes: reread its cookie choices and account privacy settings instead of assuming an old decision still covers new partners or features.
- Before using a shared device: use a separate browser profile or private window, avoid saving passwords, and clear local data when finished.
- When something breaks: isolate one setting, make a narrow exception, test the needed function, and restore stronger protection everywhere else.
Keep browsers, operating systems, apps, and extensions updated. Updates can add stronger tracking defenses and fix security flaws, but they can also change labels and defaults. Verify the actual setting after an update rather than relying on an old checklist.
What these steps cannot prevent
A website can still receive information necessary to deliver the page, and an account can still connect activity to the details you provide when you sign in. A company may retain earlier records under its own retention policy. Fingerprinting, server-side correlation, and tracking methods not recognized by a particular blocker can remain. A virtual private network can alter the network route, but it should not be treated as a way to defeat cookie-based or account-based tracking.
For that reason, do not judge privacy by whether adverts disappear or whether one tracker test reports a clean result. Judge it by whether you have reduced unnecessary permissions, limited cross-site storage, separated services where practical, and made informed exceptions for the functions you choose to keep.
How to protect your privacy from online tracking and data collection in practice
Begin with the browser you use most, enable its built-in cross-site protections, and clear old site data selectively. Then review phone permissions and advertising identifiers, make a necessary-cookies-only choice when offered, and inspect connected-TV settings. Add an ad blocker only if you understand its permissions and limitations. When a service breaks, create the smallest trustworthy exception and keep the stronger defaults everywhere else.
