Before posting about a conflict, turn off or limit location access for your camera and social apps, avoid check-ins and live updates from sensitive places, and inspect images for identifying details. A post can reveal where you are through much more than a location tag: metadata, visible landmarks, timing, tags, and a sequence of posts can all provide clues. No single setting guarantees anonymity or safety.
How a post can reveal your location
There are two broad routes: direct location data attached to a post, and clues an observer can use to infer a place or identify people. Blocking one route does not block the others.

- Location features: An app may attach a place label or, if a feature is enabled, more precise coordinates. Check-ins and location stickers can also disclose a place directly.
- Media metadata: Photos and videos may carry information such as the time, date, device, or GPS coordinates. The Australian eSafety Commissioner warns that not all social media services remove metadata attached to images.
- What appears in the frame: Street signs, distinctive buildings, doorways, maps, uniforms, or other recognizable details can identify a location even after metadata is removed.
- Timing and context: A live post, caption, event detail, or series of updates may reveal where an event is happening or when someone was there.
- People and connections: Tags, faces, and other identifying details can expose who attended a gathering or connect someone to a place.
The Canadian Department of National Defence notes that hidden photo data can include “time, date, device information, and GPS coordinates,” which may be exploited by adversaries. That is one reason to consider both the file and the visible image before sharing.

Use this checklist before posting
- Decide whether the post needs to be public now. If it could reveal your current location or a sensitive gathering, consider waiting until you have left. Delayed posting is one risk-reduction measure recommended in guidance for journalists; it reduces real-time disclosure but does not remove clues from the post itself.
- Review location access on the device and in the app. Check the operating system’s location permissions for the camera and social app, then check the service’s own post-location, location-label, or check-in controls. These controls differ by app, account, operating system, and version. X, for example, documents that its location feature is off until opted into; its in-app camera can attach precise coordinates alongside a location label when that option is enabled. Do not assume another service works the same way.
- Inspect the photo or video file. Check whether it contains location or other metadata, and remove location data or create a clean copy when appropriate. Do not assume uploading to a platform will strip it. Removing metadata also will not hide what can be recognized in the image.
- Look closely at the image and caption. Crop or omit street signs, landmarks, doorways, maps, and other identifying details where doing so is safe and does not misrepresent the scene. Review captions and other posts for clues that could make the place or timing obvious.
- Protect other people’s identities. Avoid tagging people or identifying them in images from a protest or other sensitive gathering without their consent. An image may expose attendance or identity even if no name is written in the caption.
- Check the audience and account access. Choose an audience appropriate to the risk, secure your account, and review which accounts, apps, or people can access shared location. Meta recommends two-factor authentication for Facebook and Instagram; eSafety also advises reviewing location access across accounts and services. A restricted audience can limit who sees a post, but it does not prevent recipients from saving or sharing it.
Take extra care around protests and other sensitive gatherings
A post from a gathering can reveal more than a photographer’s whereabouts: it may show who attended, where an action took place, or when it happened. Privacy International advises against tagging people involved without consent and cautions that images can be used to identify people at a scene.

Consider the local context and the safety of people pictured before sharing, including when the post is intended to document events.
Review settings at every layer
Location controls are spread across devices, services, and accounts. Turning off one feature is not a universal privacy switch.

- Device: Review which apps can access location.
- Camera and media: Check whether location is recorded in new photos or videos, and inspect existing files before sharing.
- Social platform: Check post-level location, check-in, and audience controls for the service and account you are using.
- Shared location: Review location-sharing apps, connected accounts, and people or services with access.
- Account security: Use two-factor authentication where available and check for unfamiliar connected accounts or apps.
Platform interfaces and options change, so verify the current controls for your particular device and account rather than relying on instructions for a different app or version.

Posting precautions address only some ways location can be exposed. If threats, stalking, or suspected spyware are part of your situation, review connected accounts and location-sharing access as well as post settings. eSafety advises checking for spyware; it also notes that antivirus apps can detect and remove existing spyware and malicious applications. Choose support suited to your local threat and circumstances, and consider whether changing settings or removing software could alert someone monitoring the device.
