How to Protect Your Portfolio During a Stock Market Crash

You cannot make a portfolio immune to a stock-market crash. You can, however, reduce avoidable damage by setting an allocation that fits your goal and time horizon, diversifying broadly, keeping cash for near-term needs, and following a rebalancing rule instead of making an emotional decision after prices fall.

The practical sequence is simple: decide how much loss you can withstand before a crisis, spread risk across and within asset classes, separate emergency money from long-term investments, and write down what would trigger a review. During a selloff, use that plan to distinguish a change in your circumstances from a change in market headlines.

What “protecting” a portfolio really means

Protection in this context means managing risks you can control, not finding a guaranteed hedge. Stocks can fall sharply, diversified funds can lose value, and no allocation works for every investor. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov materials tie an appropriate mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other investments to three personal inputs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Time horizon: how long the money can remain invested before it is needed.
  • Risk tolerance: how much price volatility you are willing and able to accept.
  • Goal and circumstances: what the money is for, the size and timing of withdrawals, income stability, debt, taxes and other financial commitments.

A goal due in a few years generally has less capacity for a large stock allocation than a retirement goal decades away. That is a planning implication, not a universal percentage. Your mix should change when your horizon, capacity for loss or objective changes—not merely because one asset class recently rose or fell.

Investor.gov’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing describes allocation as dividing investments among assets such as stocks, bonds and cash. Its guidance is educational rather than a personal recommendation. A qualified financial professional can help translate your cash-flow needs and tax situation into a target policy.

Set a target allocation before the next decline

A written target gives you a reference point when news and account balances are moving quickly. Start with each goal separately rather than treating every account as one undifferentiated portfolio.

1. List the goal and withdrawal date

Record the purpose of the money, the earliest date withdrawals could begin and whether withdrawals will be occasional or regular. Near-term tuition, a home purchase or a planned business expense cannot tolerate the same volatility as money intended for a retirement account that will not be touched for decades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test your ability to absorb a loss

Ask what would happen if the account fell substantially while the goal date stayed fixed. A person with a stable income, years before withdrawals and other liquid resources may have more capacity than someone who would have to sell investments to pay next month’s bills. Capacity is different from temperament: being uncomfortable with volatility can still lead to a poor decision if the allocation is too aggressive to hold.

3. Choose broad categories, then document ranges

Write the intended exposure to major categories—such as domestic and international stocks, high-quality or other bonds, and cash—along with an acceptable range around each target. The range is a decision aid: it tells you when market movement has created a meaningful drift and avoids trading for every small fluctuation.

4. Revisit the inputs, not the headlines

Review the policy when a goal, time horizon, income source, debt burden or ability to tolerate losses changes. Investor.gov cautions against changing allocation simply because an investment category has recently performed well or poorly. A market crash may reveal that your original risk assessment was unrealistic, but the correction should be based on your circumstances and a deliberate review.

Diversify across asset classes and within each one

Investor.gov defines diversification as “The practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” Spreading exposure can reduce the effect of one company, sector, country or asset class performing badly. It does not eliminate market losses: a broad stock portfolio can decline when stock markets fall, and different assets can become more correlated during a crisis.

Across asset classes

Stocks, bonds and cash respond to economic conditions in different ways, but none is a guaranteed counterweight. The right combination depends on the goal and the loss you can withstand. Treat a category as a tool for a particular role—growth, income, stability or liquidity—rather than assuming it will always rise when another category falls.

Within stocks and bonds

Check whether your stock exposure is spread across company sizes, industries and geographic regions. For bonds, examine issuer type, maturity, credit quality and concentration. A portfolio can appear to contain several funds while still owning the same large companies or the same narrow industry through each fund.

Do not mistake a fund count for diversification

Funds and exchange-traded funds can make it convenient to own many securities, but a narrowly focused fund is not automatically diversified. Review each fund’s mandate, largest holdings, sector weights and geographic exposure. Compare the top holdings across funds to identify overlap; five products with the same dominant companies may provide less diversification than one genuinely broad fund.

A practical concentration audit

  1. Export or list every holding across taxable accounts, retirement accounts and employer plans.
  2. Map each holding to its underlying companies, sectors, countries and asset class. Use look-through holdings for funds where available.
  3. Add exposures that are economically related, even when they sit in different accounts or have different fund names.
  4. Mark any single company, sector, country or issuer that would materially change the portfolio if it fell sharply.
  5. Compare the resulting exposure with your written target and decide whether a planned contribution or a tax-aware trade is needed.

This audit is especially important after an employer’s stock, a fast-rising sector or a concentrated fund has grown faster than the rest of the portfolio.

What to do before a crash

Preparation is mostly administrative. The following checklist reduces the number of decisions you must make under pressure.

  • Write the target mix: include ranges, the purpose of each account and the conditions that trigger a review.
  • Separate emergency money: keep funds for unexpected near-term expenses outside investments that could be down when you need them.
  • Automate contributions: regular deposits can continue purchasing underweight categories without requiring a forecast.
  • Check account access: confirm beneficiaries, contact details, cash-transfer instructions and the location of statements.
  • Understand costs: identify commissions or other transaction charges, fund expenses and the tax treatment of sales in each account.
  • Record your reason for owning each holding: a written investment policy makes it easier to distinguish a broken thesis from a normal price decline.
  • Set a communication rule: decide how often you will review balances during extreme volatility so constant alerts do not drive impulsive trades.

Investor.gov’s Introduction to Investing presents an emergency fund as money many investors set aside for a rainy day, so an unexpected expense does not require borrowing. It does not prescribe a universal reserve size. Choose an amount by considering the stability of your income, essential expenses, insurance deductibles, dependents and access to other liquid resources.

What to do when the market is falling

A decline alone does not tell you that your long-term plan is wrong. Investor.gov’s Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio? warns that “Jumping totally out of the market and trying to time the market may not be the best long-term investment strategy.” Selling every stock position after prices have fallen can lock in a loss and leave you out of a later recovery. That warning is about avoiding reflexive market timing, not a promise that markets recover on a predictable schedule or an instruction to hold a security whose fundamentals no longer fit your plan.

Use this decision sequence

  1. Check for a personal change first. Has the goal moved closer, has your income become less reliable, or do you now need money that was previously long term? If yes, update the plan for that reason.
  2. Check the target and the drift. Compare current weights with the ranges you chose in advance. Do not create a new target simply because a news story is alarming.
  3. Check liquidity. If a near-term bill is the concern, use the cash reserve or other planned liquidity rather than selling a long-term holding solely because prices are down.
  4. Check the holding itself. A company-specific problem, a fund mandate change or an unexpected concentration may justify a review separate from the market decline.
  5. Apply your rebalancing rule. If the portfolio is outside its permitted range, make the smallest tax- and cost-aware adjustment that restores the policy.
  6. Pause before an irreversible trade. If you cannot explain how a proposed sale or purchase advances a stated goal, wait and obtain independent advice.

Rebalance with a rule, not a forecast

Rebalancing returns a portfolio to its chosen allocation after market movement causes one category to become overweight and another underweight. It is a risk-control process, not a guarantee of higher returns and not a prediction about what markets will do next.

Calendar-based review

Reviewing on a schedule—such as every six or twelve months—is one approach discussed by financial experts in Investor.gov material. A calendar creates a repeatable habit and reduces the temptation to trade whenever a headline changes. It can, however, lead to a trade even when the portfolio has barely moved, so apply your stated ranges and cost checks.

Threshold-based review

With a threshold method, you review when an allocation moves a predetermined amount or percentage away from its target. This responds to actual drift rather than a date. It requires monitoring and a clear definition of the threshold, including whether it is measured against the original target or a permitted range.

Use contributions before selling

Directing new contributions, dividends or salary-plan deposits toward an underweight category can restore the mix without selling an appreciated holding. This may be particularly useful in taxable accounts, although the contribution still needs to fit the account’s rules and your overall policy.

When a sale is necessary

Before selling, estimate transaction costs and the tax consequences for that account. A taxable sale can create a gain or loss; a retirement-account transaction may have different immediate tax effects but can still involve plan restrictions or fees. Keep records of the target, the reason for the trade and the resulting allocation. A tax professional can evaluate basis, holding period and applicable rules for your circumstances.

Approach How it works Useful when Trade-offs
Calendar review Check the portfolio at a recurring interval and rebalance only when it is outside your policy. You want a simple routine that does not depend on market predictions. May review too often or too rarely for the actual drift; trades can create taxes and fees.
Threshold review Act when a category moves beyond a predetermined deviation from its target. You want action tied to portfolio movement rather than a date. Requires monitoring and a clearly documented threshold; small differences can still create costs.
Contribution-led Send new money to underweight categories before selling other holdings. You are adding money regularly and want to limit taxable sales. Works only when contributions are large or frequent enough to correct the drift.

Investor.gov says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. That is a guardrail against constant trading, not a universal interval. Your policy should specify the review method, permitted ranges and the circumstances that justify an exception.

Keep near-term spending separate from market risk

Forced selling is especially damaging when an account is down and a bill cannot wait. Match the location and volatility of money to when you expect to spend it. Money for imminent expenses should be accessible without relying on a favorable stock-market price.

Review recurring withdrawals, insurance deductibles, expected tax payments and other known obligations alongside your emergency reserve. If you would need to borrow or sell investments to cover a routine surprise, the reserve may not match your circumstances. The appropriate amount varies; the Investor.gov material cited here does not set a required dollar figure or number of months.

Understand account, tax and cost differences

The same allocation decision can have different consequences depending on where the assets sit. In a taxable account, selling can realize capital gains or losses and may affect your tax bill. In an employer plan, investment menus, trading windows and restrictions may limit how you rebalance. In an individual retirement account, the immediate tax treatment of a trade can differ, but withdrawals and account rules still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

List the expense ratio or other ongoing cost for each fund, any trading or account fee, and the tax effect of a proposed sale. A low-cost trade is not automatically appropriate if it creates an unwanted concentration elsewhere, and avoiding a tax bill is not a reason to keep a holding that no longer matches the goal. Coordinate investment and tax decisions with a qualified professional when the consequences are material.

Common mistakes during a crash

Selling everything after a large drop

This converts an unrealized decline into a realized loss and makes participation in a later recovery dependent on correctly choosing a re-entry point. If your circumstances changed, reduce risk deliberately; do not use an all-or-nothing trade as a substitute for a new plan.

Buying a recent winner as a “safe” replacement

An asset that performed well in the last decline or the last year is not guaranteed to behave the same way in the next one. Evaluate its role, volatility, liquidity and concentration rather than labeling it safe from recent performance.

Assuming bonds or cash always rise when stocks fall

Interest-rate changes, credit events and inflation can affect bonds, while cash may lose purchasing power over time. They can serve stability or liquidity roles without being a guaranteed hedge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting accounts instead of exposures

Several accounts or funds may hold the same companies. Consolidate the view across the household, including workplace plans, to see the actual risk.

Rebalancing every day

Frequent trading adds potential taxes, fees and decision errors without proving that it improves outcomes. Use the written trigger you selected before the crisis.

Ignoring a genuine change in the investment

“Do not panic” does not mean “never sell.” A fund that changed its mandate, a company whose finances no longer meet your criteria or a concentration created by employment compensation deserves a review based on evidence and your policy.

A worked example without a recommended percentage

Investor.gov uses a hypothetical example in which a portfolio that began with 60% in stocks later becomes 80% stocks after stock-market gains. The example illustrates drift: the investor may need to sell some of the overweight category, add to the underweight category or direct new contributions toward it to restore the chosen mix. It is not a recommended 60/40 allocation, a forecast or a result that applies to every investor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same mechanics work in a crash in reverse. If stocks fall and bonds or cash become a larger share, the policy may call for adding to stocks or trimming the now-overweight category—but only after confirming that the goal, horizon and ability to take risk are unchanged. If those inputs changed, write a new policy instead of mechanically restoring the old one.

When professional advice is worthwhile

Consider a qualified financial professional when you have several goals with different dates, concentrated employer stock, a large taxable gain, complex income, a pending retirement, an inheritance or uncertainty about how much loss your plan can withstand. A tax professional can assess the consequences of selling, harvesting a loss or changing account locations. Ask what the adviser will do, how they are paid and what conflicts or limitations apply.

Professional advice should clarify decisions, not promise a crash-proof portfolio. Be cautious of anyone claiming guaranteed protection, a precise recovery timetable or a single allocation suitable for every investor.

Crash-preparation checklist

  • Each goal has a time horizon and a written target allocation.
  • The target reflects both willingness and ability to tolerate losses.
  • Holdings are diversified across asset classes, sectors, issuers and regions where appropriate.
  • Fund overlap and large single-position exposures have been reviewed.
  • Emergency and near-term spending money is accessible without selling long-term assets.
  • A calendar, threshold or contribution-led rebalancing method is documented.
  • Tax effects, fund costs and transaction charges are checked before a trade.
  • The plan states what would count as a personal change requiring a new allocation.
  • Statements, beneficiaries and account-access details are current.
  • You know when to consult a qualified financial or tax professional.

The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance, including the March 31, 2026 Investor.gov Tips for 2026 bulletin, supports the same foundation: match allocation to your circumstances, diversify without assuming losses are impossible, maintain liquidity for unexpected needs and rebalance deliberately. Those steps cannot predict or prevent a crash, but they can reduce concentration, liquidity and behavior risks that are within an investor’s control.
