Entering your PSN password on an untrusted page, scanning a sign-in QR code, authorizing an unfamiliar app, or seeing an unknown purchase warrants immediate account protection. Merely visiting a store without entering credentials, approving access, installing software, or seeing suspicious activity does not by itself prove that your account was compromised.
If you supplied sign-in information, start by changing your PSN sign-in method and the password for the email account linked to PSN. Then enable a passkey or 2-step verification, review authorized apps and transactions, remove payment methods if necessary, and contact PlayStation Support if you cannot regain control or find unexplained changes.

First, identify what happened
The phrase “unofficial PS5 store” can describe very different situations. Your next step depends on whether the site merely displayed pages or received information that can be used to access your account.

| You only opened or browsed the site | No evidence of PSN exposure by itself. The official guidance does not say that every visit automatically compromises an account. | Check for unexpected sign-in alerts, account-change emails, unfamiliar authorized apps and purchases. Escalate if anything is unexplained. |
| You typed a PSN email address, password or other sign-in details | An untrusted party may be able to attempt access, especially if the password is reused elsewhere. | Change the PSN sign-in method immediately, secure the linked email account, add a passkey or 2-step verification, and inspect account activity. |
| You scanned a QR code that requested PlayStation sign-in | A QR code can lead to a counterfeit sign-in flow or approve access you did not intend to grant. | Treat it like exposed sign-in information: change the sign-in method, secure your email, review apps and transactions, and contact Support if needed. |
| You authorized a third-party app | The app may retain an authorization to access account-related information or functions. | Review Authorized Apps and unlink anything you do not recognize. |
| You installed or ran unauthorized console software | This raises separate console-security and terms-of-service concerns; the available guidance does not establish the outcome for every store or activity. | Protect the account first, stop using the untrusted software, and consult the terms and PlayStation Support for account-specific help. |
| You see an unknown sign-in, changed email, changed password or purchase | There is an observable account-security event, not just a possibility. | Follow the compromised-account steps immediately and contact PlayStation Support if you cannot restore control. |
Keep the distinction clear: PlayStation warns against sharing account details with untrusted sites and QR codes, but its published guidance does not establish that a particular store collected your data merely because you visited it. The identity and practices of the store in this title are unspecified.

Secure the PSN sign-in and recovery email
Change the PSN sign-in method
On a PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security. You can also use PlayStation Account Management. PlayStation says security-setting changes apply across your devices and consoles, so you do not need to repeat the change on each PS5.
- Sign in through the PS5 security settings or the official Account Management site, not through a link supplied by the unofficial store.
- Change the password to a strong, unique credential that has never been used on another site, or set up a passkey if your devices support it.
- If you suspect that another person can still access the account, change the password even if you have not yet confirmed a fraudulent purchase. Changing it can sign out devices you cannot access.
- Check your account email and other security details for changes you did not make. Do not approve a security email or sign-in prompt that you did not initiate.
PlayStation’s security guidance is available at How to change your security settings on PlayStation and its security-practice recommendations at How to use security best practices on PlayStation.
Protect the email account linked to PSN
The email address attached to PSN is part of your recovery chain. Anyone who controls that mailbox may be able to intercept password-reset messages or security notices. Change its password to a unique one, enable the email provider’s strongest available multifactor option, and review forwarding rules, recovery addresses and recent sign-ins. If you received an email saying that your PSN address or password changed and you did not make the change, secure the email account first and use PlayStation’s recovery guidance rather than replying to the message.
Do not reuse the new PSN password for email, shopping, gaming forums or any other service. A password exposed on one site can be tried automatically against other accounts.
Check for signs that the account was altered
Look for a changed sign-in ID, password, passkey, phone number, security setting, profile detail or linked service that you did not add. Unexpected PlayStation emails are useful clues, but an email alone is not proof that a message is genuine. Open Account Management directly by typing the official address or using the console menu, then compare the account details there. Do not click a recovery link in an unsolicited message or disclose a verification code to someone who says they are helping.
Write down the approximate time you used the store, what information you entered, the device involved and any alerts you received. Those details can help Support understand the sequence without requiring you to forward sensitive credentials.
Add a second sign-in safeguard
PlayStation supports both passkeys and 2-step verification (2SV). Choose the option you can reliably use and recover. Neither option removes the need to protect your email account.

| Option | How sign-in works | Preparation and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Use a passkey stored on a compatible device or credential manager instead of typing a PSN password. | Convenient and resistant to many phishing pages, but you must retain access to the device or passkey manager and its recovery process. PlayStation’s password-at-checkout setting is not compatible with an account that has passkeys set up. |
| Password plus 2SV | Enter the PSN password and then a verification code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. | Save the supplied backup codes somewhere safe before you need them. Losing the phone or authenticator without backup codes can complicate recovery. |
Set up a passkey
From PlayStation Account Management or the security settings on PS5, choose the passkey option and follow the device prompts. Finish the setup on a device you control, verify that you can use the passkey, and keep the device’s screen lock enabled. If you share consoles or devices, do not enroll another person’s biometric or device credential as your only recovery route.
Set up 2-step verification
- Open PlayStation’s account security settings and select the 2-step verification option.
- Choose SMS or an authenticator app, then follow the enrollment prompts.
- Enter the verification code to confirm setup.
- Store every backup code in a secure location that is separate from the phone used for codes. Do not post codes in cloud notes shared with other people or send them to a person claiming to be Support.
- Test a normal sign-in while you still have access to the phone or authenticator.
The official setup instructions, including the recovery-code guidance, are at How to set up 2-step verification on PlayStation.
Remove unfamiliar app access
An unofficial site may ask you to approve an application rather than type a password. Review that access separately from your password change. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps. Compare every listed app with services you intentionally use. Unlink anything you do not recognize or no longer need, then change your PSN sign-in method if the authorization was obtained through an untrusted page.
Use the official instructions at How to manage authorized apps. Unlinking an app does not prove what it did before removal, so continue by checking account changes and purchases.
Check purchases, subscriptions and payment methods
Review transaction history
Open your PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions in Account Management. Look for purchases, wallet activity or recurring charges you do not recognize, including small charges that could be a test transaction. Confirm the date, amount and account that made each transaction before assuming it is fraudulent; a family member using a shared console can produce a legitimate charge that still deserves a conversation.
Check subscriptions as well as one-time purchases. A recurring service can continue billing even when the original purchase is no longer visible on the console’s home screen. Save the transaction date, amount and order details for any item you do not recognize. Do not rely on a screenshot from the unofficial store as proof of payment; use the transaction record in your own PlayStation account.
Reduce the chance of another unwanted purchase
If you are concerned that someone can still use the account, remove saved payment methods while you investigate. PlayStation also recommends requiring a password at checkout to help prevent unwanted purchases. That checkout-password setting is not compatible with an account that has passkeys enabled, so treat it as an option for accounts using the password sign-in method rather than as a universal requirement.

Do not ask an unfamiliar site to “verify” a charge by sending it your card number, one-time code or PSN credentials. Use the account’s own transaction history and the official support path. PlayStation’s compromised-account and unauthorized-payment guidance is at Phished (compromised) accounts and unauthorized charges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you used a device or console you cannot control
Change the PSN password to sign out devices that you cannot access. If you still suspect an active session, use Account Management’s remote deactivation path: Account Management > Device Management > PlayStation Consoles > Deactivate All Devices.
This control deactivates all consoles associated with the account; it cannot target one individual console. PlayStation limits the action to once every six months, so use it deliberately. Afterward, sign in only on consoles you trust and change the password again if you entered it on the untrusted device.
Detailed instructions and the six-month limitation are listed at How to deactivate a PlayStation console.
What to do if you only browsed the store
If you did not enter a PSN password, scan a sign-in QR code, authorize an app, install untrusted software or observe suspicious activity, do not claim that the account is compromised solely because the site loaded. The cautious response is monitoring rather than an unsupported conclusion.
- Check your inbox for unexpected PlayStation sign-in, password-change or email-change notices.
- Review authorized apps for an entry you did not approve.
- Inspect transaction history and subscriptions for unfamiliar activity.
- Use a unique PSN password and enable a passkey or 2SV if you have not already done so.
If any check reveals an unexplained change, follow the compromised-account process instead of treating the visit as harmless. The absence of an alert is not proof that a site is trustworthy; it simply means the available facts do not establish exposure.
If you entered only an email address
An email address alone is not the same as giving away a password, but it can make targeted phishing more convincing. Be especially cautious of messages claiming that your PlayStation account needs verification, refunds or an urgent password reset. Navigate to the console’s security menu or official Account Management yourself. If you also reused a password from another service, change that other service’s password too, beginning with your email account.

When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support promptly if you cannot change the sign-in method, cannot access the account, see an unfamiliar email or password change, find an unexplained charge after checking transaction history, or continue to receive sign-in alerts after securing the account. Use the recovery path in PlayStation’s compromised-account guide. Have the account email, approximate dates, transaction details and screenshots of genuine account notices ready, but never send a password, passkey, backup code or full payment-card number to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
If a recovery email says that your account details changed, do not create a second account to work around the problem or keep retrying links from the suspicious store. Secure the mailbox, use the official recovery flow and explain which details changed. Support is the appropriate escalation when the sign-in method cannot be changed or access has been lost.

Account protection does not override console terms
Account recovery and service compliance are separate questions. The US PlayStation Terms of Service prohibit specified unauthorized software, hardware and security circumvention and describe possible restrictions. They do not provide a basis for predicting that every person who used an unofficial store will be suspended: the result can depend on the software, activity, account, evidence and region.
“All users should safeguard their Account sign-in ID, password, passkey, or other authenticating information and take steps to prevent access to your Account by other persons on any shared devices.”
PlayStation Terms of Service (US), section 3.3
Read the current US terms at PlayStation Terms of Service and the PS5-specific license at PlayStation 5 System Software License Agreement. These documents are US-specific; if your account is registered elsewhere, consult the terms and support pages for that region.
A practical recovery checklist
- Write down what you entered, scanned, installed or authorized, and when.
- From PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security, or use official Account Management.
- Change the PSN sign-in method to a unique password or a passkey.
- Change and secure the password for the email account used for PSN recovery.
- Enable a passkey or 2SV; if using 2SV, save backup codes securely.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps and unlink unfamiliar access.
- Review transaction history, subscriptions and recent account changes.
- Remove saved payment methods if you believe another person may still be able to purchase.
- If a device is inaccessible, change the password and consider Account Management > Device Management > PlayStation Consoles > Deactivate All Devices, remembering that it affects every console and is available once every six months.
- Contact PlayStation Support immediately if access is lost, changes are not yours or suspicious activity continues.
Completing these steps addresses the account risks that can be acted on now without assuming facts about the unnamed store that have not been established.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do if I think my PlayStation account was compromised?
Change the PSN sign-in method from the PS5 security menu or official Account Management, secure the email account used for recovery, enable a passkey or 2-step verification, review authorized apps and transactions, and contact PlayStation Support if access or account details cannot be restored.
Best Value
How do I change my PlayStation password?
On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security, or use PlayStation Account Management. Choose a unique password that you have never used elsewhere. If another device may be signed in, changing the password can sign out devices you cannot access.
Should I use a passkey or 2-step verification?
Both are supported. A passkey avoids typing a password and requires access to a compatible device or credential manager. 2-step verification uses your password plus an SMS or authenticator-app code, and requires you to store backup codes securely. Choose the method you can reliably recover.
How do I turn on 2-step verification?
Open PlayStation account security settings, select 2-step verification, choose SMS or an authenticator app, complete enrollment and save every backup code in a secure location. Test a sign-in while you still control the phone or authenticator.
How do I check for unauthorized PlayStation Store charges?
Open transaction history and subscriptions in Account Management and compare dates, amounts and account activity. Remove saved payment methods if you are concerned, then use PlayStation’s compromised-account and unauthorized-payment support path for unexplained charges.
What if I authorized an app but did not type my password?
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps on PS5 and unlink anything unfamiliar or no longer needed. If the authorization came from an untrusted page, also change the PSN sign-in method and inspect transactions and account changes.
Does visiting an unofficial store automatically compromise PSN?
No. Visiting alone does not establish that credentials were collected or access was granted. If you entered no credentials, scanned no sign-in QR code, authorized no app and see no suspicious activity, monitor alerts, authorized apps and transactions rather than assuming compromise.
Can I deactivate just the console I no longer control?
PlayStation’s remote option is Deactivate All Devices under Account Management > Device Management > PlayStation Consoles. It affects every console on the account and is limited to once every six months, so use it deliberately.
The Bottom Line
Secure the PSN account based on the exposure: change the sign-in method and linked email password after entering credentials or scanning an untrusted QR code; add a passkey or 2SV; unlink unfamiliar apps; check transactions and payment methods; and contact PlayStation Support when access or account changes cannot be resolved. Browsing alone is not proof of compromise, but it is a reason to verify your account through official channels.
