Protecting WhatsApp from a remote-access trojan (RAT) requires two separate jobs: keeping malicious software off the phone and preventing someone from taking over the WhatsApp account. A RAT or other phone malware can attack the endpoint, steal WhatsApp’s authentication key and send messages as you. End-to-end encryption protects messages while they travel between devices; it does not remove malware from an already infected phone.
The practical baseline is straightforward: use only the official WhatsApp app, keep Android or iOS and WhatsApp updated, leave Android Play Protect enabled, secure the account with two-step verification and a passkey when available, never disclose the six-digit registration code, and review Linked Devices. If you suspect compromise, recover the account and clean or replace the device as separate tasks.

What “WhatsApp remote-access trojan” means
“WhatsApp RAT” is a useful description of a mechanism, not the name of one confirmed malware family or a known mass campaign. The general risk is on-device malware that gives an attacker control over parts of the phone or steals data from apps. Meta explains that malware on the endpoint can obtain WhatsApp’s authentication key and then impersonate the account, including sending messages. That distinction matters because WhatsApp account controls and phone security controls solve different problems. Two-step verification can make an unauthorized registration harder, but it is not an antivirus scan. A clean Play Protect result can be reassuring, but it does not prove that an account has not been taken over. Treat both layers as necessary.

The two protection layers

WhatsApp’s account-security guidance covers account safeguards. Keep those actions conceptually separate from device remediation.
Reduce the chance of installing a RAT
Install the official WhatsApp client
Download WhatsApp only from the official app store for your phone, and update it through that store. Do not install modified WhatsApp clients, “premium” versions, cracked APKs or apps delivered through an unsolicited message, email or web page. Meta’s security engineering team says: “These unofficial apps put users’ security at risk – and it is why we encourage everyone using WhatsApp to use the official WhatsApp app.” The warning is about the app itself: an unofficial client can expose the authentication key even when your messages are end-to-end encrypted.
When an unsolicited message tells you to install an update, open the app store yourself instead of following its link. Check the publisher name, reviews and requested permissions, but do not treat any single store listing as a guarantee of safety.

Install available Android security updates and system updates, or iOS updates, as soon as your normal testing and backup routine allows. Updates close known vulnerabilities that malicious apps may use. Also update WhatsApp itself; an old client can miss security fixes and account-protection features. If your phone no longer receives security updates, replacing it is a more dependable long-term option than relying on an app setting.
Use Google Play Protect on Android
Google Play Protect checks apps when they are installed and periodically afterward. Google says it can also evaluate apps installed from outside Google Play, then warn about, disable or remove harmful software. To check it:

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect.
- Open Settings and make sure Scan apps with Play Protect is on. Leave the option to improve detection of harmful apps enabled if it is offered.
- Return to the Play Protect screen and run a scan. Follow the removal or disable instructions if Google flags an app.
Google’s description of the service is in Use Google Play Protect to help keep your apps safe & your data private. A clean scan is one piece of evidence, not proof that there is no sophisticated or previously unknown compromise.
Be deliberate with powerful permissions
Review apps that request Accessibility access, notification access, device-administrator privileges, VPN control, screen recording or the ability to install other apps. Grant such access only when you understand why the app needs it and when the publisher is trustworthy. Remove access that is no longer necessary and uninstall software you do not recognize. These are general malware precautions; there is no official WhatsApp-specific permission checklist that can diagnose a RAT by itself.
Respond to Apple malware warnings
If an iPhone or iPad reports that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, Apple’s instruction is to delete the app rather than override the warning. Follow Apple’s malware-alert guidance. Do not reinstall the same package from an unofficial source, and update iOS before continuing with other security work.
Harden WhatsApp account access
Turn on two-step verification
In WhatsApp, open Settings, choose Account, then Two-step verification, and select Enable. Create a PIN that is not reused elsewhere and add an email address for recovery if WhatsApp offers that option. Store the PIN in a password manager rather than in a chat or an unprotected note. The PIN is an account safeguard; it does not scan the phone.
WhatsApp and Meta have announced stronger, longer two-step-verification passwords and support for multiple passkeys for Android and iOS users. Menus and availability depend on the app version and rollout, so install the current official release and use the option when it appears instead of assuming every account has it already.

Add a passkey when the option is available
A passkey uses the phone’s screen lock or biometric unlock to authenticate registration. In WhatsApp, look under Settings → Account for Passkeys and follow the enrollment prompts. Keep a secure recovery method for the device and its password manager. Meta reported that more than one billion people had set up a WhatsApp passkey in an August 2026 announcement; that is a company-reported adoption figure, not a measurement of RAT infections or proof that passkeys prevent every takeover. Protect the six-digit registration code
When WhatsApp registers your number, it sends a six-digit code by SMS or voice call. Never share it with anyone, including a person claiming to be WhatsApp support, a friend who says they entered your number by mistake, or someone who says the code is needed to “verify” your account. WhatsApp states: “You should never share your registration code with others, not even friends or family.” Its recovery instructions are at How to recover a compromised account.
Review Linked Devices regularly
Open Settings → Linked Devices. Review the device names and recent activity, then tap an entry you do not recognize and choose Log out. An unfamiliar linked session indicates account-session exposure, but it does not by itself prove that a RAT is installed on your phone. Conversely, removing a session does not clean a compromised device. Change your account protections and investigate the phone when the circumstances suggest both problems.
Use app lock as an additional privacy barrier
WhatsApp’s app-lock feature can require your phone’s biometric or device authentication before opening chats. It helps if someone has physical access to an unlocked phone. It does not stop malware that already operates with access to the device, and it does not replace two-step verification.
Higher-risk settings: when stronger restrictions make sense
WhatsApp Strict Account Settings
Meta announced Strict Account Settings in January 2026 as an optional lockdown-style feature for people who want more protection from sophisticated attacks. The announced behavior includes blocking attachments and media from unknown senders, silencing calls from unknown people and restricting other settings. Meta described the feature as rolling out over the following weeks, so look for it in the current WhatsApp version rather than expecting it on every account. Details are in Meta’s announcement.

These restrictions can interrupt legitimate messages and calls. They are most appropriate when your threat profile justifies that usability cost, not as a routine substitute for updates and careful account hygiene.
Apple Lockdown Mode
Lockdown Mode is a system-wide Apple option for the very small number of people at risk of highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It limits features and can make websites, messages, calls and attachments less convenient. Apple says, “Most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature.” Update the iPhone first, then open Settings → Privacy & Security → Lockdown Mode to review the protections before enabling it. Read About Lockdown Mode for the current feature list. It is not a routine requirement for ordinary WhatsApp use.

How to recognize a possible compromise
No single symptom proves that a WhatsApp RAT is present. Investigate when several observations appear together or when an official warning is shown:
- An unfamiliar app appears, especially one installed outside the normal app store.
- Play Protect flags software, or iOS says an app contains malware and cannot be opened.
- An unknown device appears under WhatsApp’s Linked Devices.
- Contacts report messages you did not send, or your profile behaves as though someone else is using it.
- Unexpected Accessibility, notification, administrator, VPN or installation permissions are enabled.
- The phone shows persistent crashes, unexplained settings changes or unusual battery and data behavior after a suspicious installation.
Battery drain or a warm phone alone is not a diagnosis; many ordinary apps and weak cellular signals cause those symptoms. Avoid “cleaner” apps or unsolicited remote-support tools that promise to diagnose WhatsApp. They can add another untrusted component.

1. Protect the situation before changing it
Stop using the suspect phone for sensitive password changes if you can. From a device you believe is safe, tell close contacts that messages from your number may be untrustworthy and ask them not to follow links or send codes. Preserve useful evidence such as screenshots, dates and unfamiliar app names, but do not forward malicious files.
2. Recover the WhatsApp account
- On the phone with the correct SIM or phone number, open the official WhatsApp app and start registration.
- Enter the six-digit code delivered by SMS or voice call. Never give that code to another person.
- WhatsApp says that re-registering the number logs out other WhatsApp devices. Return to Linked Devices and confirm that unfamiliar sessions are gone.
- If WhatsApp asks for a two-step-verification PIN you do not know, follow the recovery flow. WhatsApp documents a seven-day wait in some circumstances; do not attempt to guess repeatedly or accept a stranger’s offer to “reset” it.
- After access is restored, enable or reset two-step verification and add a passkey if offered.
These steps reclaim the account. They do not establish that the phone is malware-free.
3. Remediate an Android phone
- Run a Play Protect scan and follow its instructions.
- Uninstall unfamiliar, recently installed or flagged apps. If an app resists removal, review its administrator, Accessibility, VPN and other powerful permissions first, then remove the permission and try again.
- Install every available Android and security update.
- Use Google’s Android malware-removal guidance for persistent symptoms.
- If harmful behavior remains, back up only essential personal data, perform a factory reset using the manufacturer’s official procedure, restore cautiously and reinstall apps from the official store. Google says a reset or manufacturer help may be needed when signs of malware persist.
A backup can contain unsafe files or settings, so do not blindly restore every application and permission after a reset. Change important passwords from the clean device and enable multifactor protections.
4. Remediate an iPhone
Delete any app that Apple identifies as malware and install the latest iOS update. If suspicious activity persists without an Apple alert, contact Apple Support or a qualified incident-response professional rather than assuming that deleting WhatsApp alone solved the problem. The available official guidance does not define a universal forensic procedure for every possible WhatsApp-related compromise.

5. Escalate targeted or persistent cases
Use the phone maker’s official support channel or a qualified incident-response professional when the compromise appears targeted, involves sensitive work or government data, survives a reset, or affects multiple accounts. Avoid installing random forensic or antivirus packages recommended by an unknown caller. There is no single scan, reinstall or account setting that proves every sophisticated infection has been removed.
6. Notify contacts and review other accounts
If suspicious WhatsApp messages were sent, warn recipients through another channel and ask them to ignore links, payment requests and login codes. From a device believed to be safe, change passwords for email, cloud storage, banking and social accounts that were used on the suspect phone. Revoke unfamiliar sessions and regenerate recovery codes where those services support it. This is practical incident-response advice, not a claim that WhatsApp’s tools automatically secure unrelated accounts.

Limits of the available evidence
Official sources describe the attack mechanism and available safeguards, but they do not provide a defensible statistic for WhatsApp RAT prevalence, infection rates or the percentage of infections prevented by these steps. Do not interpret the one-billion-plus passkey figure reported by Meta as an effectiveness benchmark. The sensible goal is layered risk reduction and a prepared recovery plan, not a claim of perfect detection.
A maintenance routine that keeps the layers separate
- Install WhatsApp and phone updates promptly from the official update channel.
- On Android, check Play Protect after installing software and leave scanning enabled.
- Once a month, review WhatsApp’s Linked Devices and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Keep two-step verification, a recovery email and a passkey current when those features are available.
- Use a unique device unlock code and do not lend an unlocked phone to people you do not trust.
- Reconsider powerful permissions whenever an app is updated or changes purpose.
- Practice a contact-warning plan so people know how you will tell them if your number is misused.
This routine addresses ordinary account theft and common installation risks. A credible targeted threat warrants the stricter settings and professional help described above.
