Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep your phone shaded, dry, and away from loose sand, surf, saltwater, and sunscreen. A water-resistance rating is model-specific and based on controlled tests; it is not a promise that a phone can safely be used in seawater or on a beach. If the phone gets wet or contaminated, follow its manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and do not charge it by cable until it is dry.
Why the beach is harder on a phone than an IP rating suggests
An IP rating describes a device’s performance under specified test conditions. It does not make a phone invulnerable to beach hazards, and the rating can be less reliable after wear, damage, repair, or disassembly. Check the support information for your exact phone model rather than assuming that guidance for another model applies.

Saltwater is a particular concern: a fresh-water laboratory test is not a test of ocean use. Samsung says its phone IP tests use fresh water in laboratory conditions and warns that saltwater and chlorine can deteriorate seals and reduce water resistance. Its guidance is direct: “Do not expose the device to salt water or ionized water.” Samsung’s Galaxy water-resistance guidance and explanation of IP testing distinguish those conditions from beach exposure.

Ratings and instructions also vary by maker and model. Google says Pixel 10 devices meet IP68 under IEC 60529 when leaving the factory, but are not dustproof or waterproof; Google also cautions against external heat when drying a wet Pixel. Google’s Pixel 10 safety guide is not a guarantee for other Pixel generations or other phones.

That distinction matters at the beach because a phone may encounter several hazards at once: damp hands, spray, grit, sunscreen, direct sun, and repeated handling. A rating for one kind of controlled exposure does not establish how the device will fare in all of those situations. Nor does a rating mean the phone should be deliberately tested by dipping it in water. The practical approach is prevention: keep the phone away from surf and loose sand, and treat any liquid exposure as something to clean up promptly according to the model-specific instructions.
Prepare your phone before you go
Check the exact model’s limits
Look up your phone’s IP rating, temperature guidance, and liquid-contact instructions in the manufacturer’s support documentation. Note whether the guidance applies to your specific model and region. A rating may describe a controlled test, not regular exposure or permission to swim with the phone.
Do this before you leave, rather than trying to determine the correct steps while the phone is wet. Manufacturer pages can differ not only by brand but also by model and region. Check what the maker says about cleaning a non-water liquid, drying the device, and charging after liquid exposure. If you cannot confirm the model’s guidance, use the maker’s support channel rather than applying another phone’s instructions by default.
Keep it stowed, shaded, and dry
- Put the phone in a shaded, dry bag or pocket when you are not using it. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or setting it on loose sand.
- Keep it away from the waterline, wet surf, and splashes. A rating for fresh-water testing does not establish protection in seawater.
- If you need an extra barrier near wet sand or surf, consider a correctly sized waterproof phone pouch. Check that it fits your phone and camera and that its closure is intact. Unless the pouch maker verifies a specific use and rating, do not assume it is suitable for swimming or diving. A pouch is an added precaution, not a guarantee.
Make the place you store the phone part of your plan: keep it in a dry, shaded spot rather than leaving it exposed between uses. If you take it out to check a message or take a photo, put it away again instead of resting it on a towel or patch of sand. A phone pouch for the beach may help add a barrier, but it does not remove the need to keep the device away from water or inspect the pouch before use.
Keep sunscreen off the device
Apple lists sunscreen among liquids to minimize exposing an iPhone to, and Samsung includes sunscreen among unclean liquids. Apply sunscreen with the phone put away, then handle the device with clean, dry hands when practical. Waiting until sunscreen has absorbed is a sensible precaution, not a manufacturer-specified interval. If sunscreen gets on the phone, use the cleaning instructions for that model rather than an improvised solvent or cleaner.

Think about sunscreen during the whole outing, not just when applying it. If your hands are coated, avoid picking up the phone until you can clean and dry them. If you need to use the phone, stow it again before reapplying sunscreen. These are practical ways to reduce contact, not a guarantee that sunscreen cannot reach the device.
Apple’s iPhone liquid and dust guidance was published March 17, 2026, and includes model-specific distinctions. Samsung’s advice also varies by device; neither maker’s instructions should be treated as universal rules for every phone.

What to do if sand or dust gets on your phone
- Move away from the sand. Do not rub visible grains across the screen or open a SIM tray while grit is on the exterior. Moving to a cleaner, drier spot first helps avoid continuing to handle the phone over loose sand.
- Wipe gently. Use a clean, soft lint-free cloth, such as a soft microfiber cloth, to remove dust from the outside. Apple advises against compressed air and cleaning products for dust. Use light, careful strokes rather than grinding particles across the surface.
- Keep objects out of ports. Do not push a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into the charging connector. Apple specifically warns against inserting foreign objects into the connector. Avoid trying to force grit out of an opening with an improvised tool.
- Check before opening anything. Make sure the phone is free of dust before opening its SIM tray, following Apple’s guidance. If grit is lodged in a port or opening, consult the maker’s instructions rather than forcing it deeper.
Sand and dust cleanup is a surface-cleaning task; do not assume that a phone described as dust-resistant is dustproof. Google’s Pixel 10 guide explicitly says the device is not dustproof, despite its stated IP68 rating. The rating is specific to the named model and its factory condition. If you cannot remove debris without rubbing hard or inserting something into a port, stop and check the manufacturer’s support advice.
What to do if sunscreen or saltwater gets on your phone
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the precise model, because cleaning directions and charging warnings can differ. Apple says to rinse the affected area with tap water when a liquid other than water splashes on an iPhone, then wipe it with a soft lint-free cloth. Samsung says to wash a Galaxy exposed to saltwater with fresh water and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. These are maker-specific instructions, not a reason to deliberately expose a phone to seawater.
In particular, do not interpret the Samsung direction as permission to rinse every phone, or the Apple direction as a universal procedure for all brands. Follow the exact maker’s steps and use the liquid-cleanup method it specifies. The important distinction is that saltwater and sunscreen are not the same as the fresh water used in some water-resistance tests. Leaving saltwater or another liquid on the device is not a substitute for the cleaning instructions.

- Stop using the phone near the exposure. Move it away from the water and avoid pressing buttons or connecting accessories unnecessarily. If it is in a pouch, do not assume the pouch is still a reliable barrier if its closure or material may be damaged.
- Clean it according to its maker. For an iPhone, follow Apple’s direction to rinse the affected area with tap water after a non-water liquid splash, then wipe with a soft lint-free cloth. For a Galaxy exposed to saltwater, Samsung directs users to wash it with fresh water and dry it thoroughly. If you have a different phone, follow its own support guidance.
- Dry the exterior and allow airflow. Place the phone in a dry location with airflow. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, or other external heat source to speed drying; Apple and Google warn against external heat.
- Wait before connecting power. Do not charge by cable or connect an accessory until the phone and its connector are dry. Apple specifies waiting at least five hours before cable charging after liquid exposure. That interval is Apple-specific guidance, not a universal guarantee that every phone or port will be dry after five hours. Samsung advises thorough drying and air-drying.
- Escalate damage or warnings. If the phone is cracked, has been repaired or disassembled, displays a liquid warning, or malfunctions, do not rely on its former water-resistance rating. Follow the manufacturer’s support instructions.
Wireless charging should not be treated as a workaround for a wet phone; follow the maker’s instructions for the device and its connectors before connecting any accessory or power source. If you see a liquid warning, do not override it by repeatedly plugging in a cable. Let the device dry as directed and consult the support instructions if the warning remains or the phone behaves abnormally.
How to keep a phone cool without causing damage
Keep the phone in shade and out of direct sun when it is not in use. Do not treat heat as a drying method: Apple and Google advise against external heat sources for drying wet devices. Apple also says not to operate an iPhone outside its suggested temperature range. There is no single beach-temperature threshold established here for every phone, so check the temperature limits for your exact model.
If the phone becomes hot, stop using it in the sun and move it to a cooler shaded place. Avoid placing it against a heater or using hot air. Let it cool naturally before resuming use, and consult its maker if it shows a temperature warning or continues to malfunction.
Shade is a simple preventive measure, not a substitute for the phone’s temperature guidance. Do not leave the phone exposed in direct sun while you swim or spend time away from it. If the device has been wet, do not try to solve the problem by warming it; use the maker’s drying instructions and airflow instead. The reviewed guidance does not support one universal “safe beach temperature” for every model, so avoid relying on a single number that may not apply to your phone.
What phone water-resistance numbers do—and do not—mean
Technical test figures help explain why ratings should not be confused with beach-use advice. Apple’s support article lists maximum depths of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes for specified IP68 iPhone models; model groups and test conditions vary. Samsung describes lab testing of up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes for its IP-rated phones as of April 2026. Neither figure establishes protection from saltwater, surf, sunscreen, or fine sand.

| Manufacturer guidance | What the stated figure applies to | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | For listed IP68 iPhone models, maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in Apple’s support information published March 17, 2026; model groups and conditions vary. | It is not a seawater-use recommendation or a promise that every iPhone has the same rating. |
| Samsung | Up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes in laboratory test conditions described for IP-rated phones as of April 2026. | It does not establish safe use in saltwater, chlorine, or surf. |
| Google Pixel 10 | Google says IP68 under IEC 60529 applies when the device leaves the factory. | Google says the device is not dustproof or waterproof; the statement does not cover every Pixel model. |
These figures are useful context, not a comparison that tells you which phone is safe to take swimming. The manufacturers describe different devices and test conditions, and the cited Samsung figure is for fresh water. A listed depth or time does not make a phone suitable for repeated splashes, ocean immersion, or a day on the beach. Do not use the numbers to plan an exposure that the manufacturer does not recommend.
Water resistance can diminish over time, and physical condition matters. Samsung warns that resistance may diminish; Google likewise frames Pixel 10’s rating as applying when it leaves the factory. For a cracked, repaired, or older phone, treat the rating with particular caution and use the model maker’s support guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a pouch or case without assuming too much
A pouch can add a physical barrier, but no specific pouch has been tested here. Before relying on one, evaluate:
- Fit: confirm compatibility with your phone’s size, camera arrangement, buttons, and any case already installed.
- Protection claim: distinguish tested and documented claims from vague wording. Check the conditions behind any water or dust rating.
- Closure: inspect the seal and closure for grit, damage, or incomplete fastening before use.
- Usability: verify that the touchscreen and camera work through the pouch for the tasks you need.
- Condition: keep the pouch itself clean and dry when not in use; a damaged or poorly closed barrier should not be trusted.
These are checks to make when choosing an accessory, not results from a product test. A claim that a pouch is “waterproof” does not by itself show which exposure it is intended for. Look for clear product-specific information about compatibility and the test conditions behind any rating. If those details are missing, do not assume the pouch can protect a phone during swimming or diving.
Samsung mentions a separately sold water-resistant phone case in its saltwater guidance, but that does not endorse a particular model or make every case suitable for every phone. A soft lint-free cloth is useful for exterior cleanup, but it does not protect a phone while it is exposed. Follow the phone maker’s cleaning directions even if you also use a pouch or case.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Taking “water-resistant” to mean safe in the ocean: the manufacturer test may use fresh water under controlled conditions, not seawater.
- Assuming the rating is permanent: wear, impact damage, repairs, or disassembly can change the device’s condition.
- Wiping grit around the screen: first move out of the sand and gently lift or wipe debris with a soft lint-free cloth.
- Cleaning ports with household objects: do not insert swabs, paper, or other objects into the connector.
- Using heat to dry a wet phone: choose airflow and the model maker’s instructions instead.
- Plugging in too soon: wait until both device and connector are dry; follow the exact model’s charging guidance.
- Assuming a pouch removes all risk: check its fit, closure, condition, and documented use; it is an added barrier rather than a guarantee.
- Using a one-size-fits-all cleanup method: Apple’s and Samsung’s directions are not automatically interchangeable. Check your own model’s instructions before rinsing or cleaning it.
- Using the IP number as a beach-use instruction: test figures describe specified conditions. They do not establish that the phone is safe in surf, seawater, or fine sand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take my water-resistant phone in the ocean?
It is safer to keep it away from seawater and wet surf. An IP rating describes specified test conditions, and Samsung says its phone IP tests use fresh water in laboratory conditions. Samsung warns that saltwater can deteriorate seals and says not to expose a device to salt water. Check your exact phone’s guidance; a rating is not a recommendation to swim with it.
What should I do if saltwater gets on my phone?
Follow the instructions for your exact model. Samsung says to wash a Galaxy exposed to saltwater with fresh water and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth. Apple’s instructions for an iPhone say to rinse the affected area with tap water when a liquid other than water splashes on it, then wipe with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not assume one maker’s instructions apply to another phone, and do not charge by cable until the device and connector are dry.
Can sunscreen damage a phone?
Apple lists sunscreen among liquids to minimize exposing an iPhone to, and Samsung includes sunscreen among unclean liquids. Keep the phone stowed while applying sunscreen and handle it with clean, dry hands when practical. If sunscreen contacts the phone, follow the model maker’s cleaning directions rather than using an improvised cleaner or solvent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I use a hair dryer or leave my phone in the sun to dry it?
No. Apple and Google advise against using an external heat source to dry a wet phone. Let it dry in a dry place with airflow and follow the exact model’s instructions. Apple also advises users not to operate an iPhone outside its suggested temperature range; check your own phone’s guidance because there is no single temperature limit for every model.
How long should I wait before charging a phone that got wet?
Do not connect a cable or accessory until the phone and connector are dry, and follow the manufacturer’s specific guidance. Apple says to wait at least five hours before cable charging after liquid exposure. That is Apple-specific advice, not a universal guarantee or a drying-time rule for other phones. Samsung advises thorough drying and air-drying.
Will a waterproof phone pouch make my phone safe for swimming?
Not necessarily. A pouch can add a barrier, but no specific pouch was tested for this guidance. Check its compatibility with your phone, documented rating and test conditions, closure, condition, and touchscreen and camera usability. Unless the maker verifies the intended use, do not assume it is suitable for swimming or diving.
How should I remove sand from a phone’s charging port?
Do not insert a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into the connector, and do not use compressed air. Apple warns against foreign objects in the port and advises wiping dust with a soft lint-free cloth. If grit appears lodged in an opening, consult the manufacturer’s instructions rather than forcing it farther inside.
