VA says verification helps confirm that the person opening an account is the real person and helps prevent scammers from taking over benefits.

What VA identity verification does and why it is required
Identity verification connects a VA online account to the person who is entitled to use it. The account provider checks information and identification so another person cannot create an account in your name and use it to view records, change contact details, or redirect benefits. VA’s verification page puts the purpose plainly: “This step helps us protect all Veterans’ information and prevent scammers from stealing your benefits.” Read the explanation at VA’s identity-verification page.

- It protects access to benefits and health information. A verified account is intended to be used by the person whose information is being accessed.

- It does not change eligibility. VA says choosing not to create an online account does not affect your eligibility for benefits or health care.
Begin with the official VA sign-in path
Do not start identity verification from an unexpected email, text message, social-media post, or search advertisement. Type va.gov into your browser or use a bookmark you created yourself, then select the site’s sign-in option. VA advises checking where a link leads before opening it; a message about benefits should direct you to VA.gov or another official government website, not ask you to send documents in a reply.
VA’s account guide identifies three sign-in providers. The provider maintains the account used for sign-in, while VA services are reached through the VA website or app. The following comparison reflects what VA’s published guidance establishes; “not stated” means the cited VA instructions do not specify that detail.
| Provider | Who maintains the account | Identity information described by VA | Verification or recovery routes described by VA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Login.gov | Government-maintained account | Its VA instructions list a current valid identification document and Social Security number for the verification route. | Online verification; an in-person post-office option is available for some users. Current options are shown in the Login.gov verification instructions. |
| ID.me | Non-government provider that maintains its own account | VA tells users to read consent terms describing collection of information such as a photograph or Social Security number. | Self-service and video-call assistance; VA’s general account guide also notes in-person appointments at participating UPS Store locations. See VA’s ID.me instructions. |
| CLEAR | Non-government provider that maintains its own account | Specific document and identifier requirements are not stated in the reviewed VA pages. | VA lists CLEAR as a sign-in option, but the available route and requirements can change. Follow the provider choice presented in the current VA sign-in flow. |
VA’s account-creation guidance explains the provider arrangement and current choices at Creating an account for VA.gov. Do not infer that a provider is universally more private or more secure than another from this table; the published guidance does not establish that conclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKnow what you may be asked to provide
Expect the selected provider to request personal information and identification. Before you submit anything, make sure the request appears inside the provider flow you reached from VA.gov and that the browser address is the expected provider or government domain.

Identification and Social Security number
Login.gov’s VA-specific instructions list a current valid ID and your Social Security number. ID.me’s VA instructions tell you to read consent terms that describe collection of information such as a photograph or Social Security number. These are route-specific descriptions, not a promise that every user will see exactly the same fields.
Consent terms
Read the consent screen before selecting the button that authorizes verification. Look for the categories of information collected, the purpose of collection, and any choices or conditions attached to the service. If the screen asks for information that does not match the route you selected, stop and return to the official VA sign-in page rather than trying to work around it.
Provider privacy notices
VA directs users to the selected provider’s current privacy policy. VA’s privacy directory links to provider policies, and VA’s own policy explains how VA requests information needed to complete a request. The directory was last updated September 16, 2026; VA’s VA.gov privacy and security page was last updated February 6, 2026. Review the live notices because provider storage, retention, use, and disclosure details can change. The reviewed VA pages do not establish a complete account of every provider’s retention period or onward-sharing practice, so do not rely on a blanket promise that your information is immediately deleted or never shared.

Complete verification with the least unnecessary exposure
- Open VA.gov directly. Enter the address yourself, or use a trusted bookmark. Avoid beginning with a link in an unsolicited benefit message.
- Choose Sign in and note the provider. VA may present Login.gov, ID.me, or CLEAR. Record which provider you selected so you know where the account and password are managed.
- Inspect the address before entering data. Confirm that the browser shows the expected VA or provider website and a secure connection. A convincing logo is not proof that a page is genuine.
- Read the provider’s consent language. Check what information will be collected and why. For ID.me, VA specifically directs users to review consent terms that may mention a photograph or Social Security number.
- Prepare only the documents the current route requests. For the Login.gov route described by VA, that includes a current valid identification document and Social Security number. Do not email copies or upload them to a page reached from an unexpected message.
- Finish the provider’s verification steps. Login.gov may offer online verification or, for some users, an in-person post-office route. ID.me describes self-service and video-call assistance, with participating UPS Store appointments noted in VA’s general account guide. If the available route does not work, use the provider’s official support or an alternate VA service channel.
- Create a distinct password. Do not reuse a password from email, banking, social media, or another government service. A password manager can generate and store a unique password, but it is optional and not a VA requirement.
- Turn on MFA immediately. Add at least two authentication methods when the provider supports it, and confirm that you can still access each method before ending setup.
- Save recovery information securely. Store recovery codes or instructions where you can retrieve them without leaving them visible beside your device. Do not send them to another person or paste them into a support-chat reply unless the provider’s official recovery process specifically requires it.
- Close the session on shared equipment. Sign out of the VA and provider accounts, remove downloaded documents if you used a public computer, and avoid saving passwords in a browser that other people use.
Choose MFA methods you can keep under your control
VA recommends a unique strong password and MFA. Its Login.gov guidance characterizes authentication apps, security keys, PIV or CAC cards, and face or touch unlock as more secure than text messages, landline calls, or backup codes. The practical choice is the strongest method that you can reliably access and that the provider currently supports.
| MFA method | VA’s guidance | Privacy and continuity check |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication app | Characterized as more secure than texts, landline calls, or backup codes. | Keep the phone or device available and understand the provider’s recovery process before replacing it. |
| Security key | Characterized as more secure than texts, landline calls, or backup codes. | Keep a spare or another enrolled method if the provider allows it; losing the only key can block access. |
| PIV or CAC card | Characterized as more secure than texts, landline calls, or backup codes. | Use it only with equipment and readers you trust, and retain another supported method if available. |
| Face or touch unlock | Characterized as more secure than texts, landline calls, or backup codes. | Confirm that the device is yours and protected by a local passcode. |
| Text message, landline call, or backup code | Available in some provider flows but characterized by VA as less secure than the methods above. | Use only when it is the available option, and add a stronger method when the account permits. |
VA strongly recommends not divulging your password, changing it regularly, and not sharing the device used for your additional authentication factor. Keep your phone, security key, card, and recovery information under your control. The detailed privacy and security guidance is at VA.gov privacy and security; Login.gov account setup guidance is at How to create a Login.gov account for VA.
Protect your account after verification
Check account changes, not just login alerts
Review VA notifications about changes to your mailing address, phone number, email address, payment details, and direct deposit. Monitor the bank account receiving VA deposits so an unauthorized change is noticed quickly. If a change is unfamiliar, contact VA through a phone number or website address you obtained independently, not through the suspicious message that reported it.
Recommended Free Tools
Treat benefit messages as untrusted until verified
Scammers may use urgent language, a threat of lost benefits, or a request for a one-time code to pressure you. Do not disclose a password, MFA code, recovery code, or full identity document in response to an unsolicited call, email, or text. Hover over links on a computer or press and hold on a phone to inspect the destination before opening it. When in doubt, close the message and navigate to VA.gov yourself.

Know who can reset the password
The provider controls the Login.gov, ID.me, or CLEAR account credentials. VA says its contact-center representatives cannot reset ID.me or Login.gov passwords. Use the selected provider’s official account-recovery and support process for password, MFA, or verification problems; use VA for questions about the benefit or service itself.

Stop after repeated failures
Repeatedly uploading documents or trying random links can increase exposure without fixing the problem. Recheck the provider shown in the VA flow, confirm that your identification document is current and readable, and follow the provider’s official troubleshooting instructions. ID.me’s route includes self-service and video-call assistance; Login.gov describes online verification and an in-person post-office option for some users. Plan for reverification
VA describes the general process as usually one-time, but provider-specific conditions can require reverification. Keep your account recovery methods current and review the provider’s current instructions if you are asked to verify again. A request to reverify that arrives only by an unexpected message should be treated as suspicious until you reach the provider through VA.gov.
Use a non-online channel when necessary
If you cannot or do not want to complete online verification, VA says benefits and health care can still be managed by phone, mail, or in person. Declining an online account does not affect eligibility. This is also the safer fallback when you lack a supported device, cannot access an MFA method, or cannot determine whether a message is authentic.
Make a privacy decision before you click “consent”
Use this short review to decide whether the route is acceptable for your situation:
- Source: Did you reach the flow from VA.gov rather than from an unsolicited message?
- Provider: Do you know whether the account is maintained by Login.gov, ID.me, or CLEAR?
- Data: Can you identify why each requested document, number, photograph, or biometric-related step is being requested?
- Policy: Have you read the provider’s current privacy notice and the relevant VA privacy information?
- Access: Will you retain control of at least two MFA or recovery methods?
- Monitoring: Will you notice an unexpected change to contact information or direct deposit?
- Fallback: Do you know how to reach the provider for login problems and VA for benefit questions?
There is no need to purchase a special device for this process. The identification documents and ordinary phone or computer used by the selected route are the inputs VA’s instructions describe. A password manager is an optional way to generate and store a unique password, not a required product.
Quick Recap
A compact protection checklist
- Type VA.gov yourself and inspect the destination before entering information.
- Record which provider maintains the account.
- Read consent terms before submitting an ID, Social Security number, photograph, or other personal information.
- Read the provider’s current privacy policy; do not assume VA’s policy answers provider-specific retention questions.
- Use a unique password and enable MFA.
- Enroll more than one MFA method when supported, favoring an authentication app, security key, PIV/CAC card, or face/touch unlock over texts, landline calls, or backup codes.
- Never disclose passwords, MFA codes, or recovery codes to an unsolicited caller or message.
- Monitor VA notifications, direct-deposit details, contact information, bank accounts, and deposits.
- Use the provider’s support for password or login problems; use VA’s known official channels for benefit questions.
- If online verification is unavailable or inappropriate, use VA phone, mail, or in-person service instead.
