Protect your data by treating an AI banking app like a security system and a data-collection system at the same time. Choose a provider that explains what its AI does, turn off optional personalisation and permissions, use strong two-factor authentication, keep your phone secure, and review consents and disclosures regularly. Ask directly whether transaction data is used for model training, fraud scoring or product personalisation, how long it is retained, who can access it and how you can object or request deletion.
Why an AI banking app needs a different privacy check
A conventional banking app already handles highly sensitive information: account numbers, balances, payments, payees and identity documents. An app with artificial-intelligence features may add transaction categorisation, spending forecasts, conversational support, fraud scoring, behavioural analysis or personalised offers. Each feature can require a different data set and a different retention period.

The label AI does not tell you whether your data is used to train a general model, to operate a fraud detector, or simply to generate a reply inside your account. Those are separate purposes. A bank may also use machine-learning signals such as device characteristics, IP address, location or typing patterns as extra security controls. You need to know which processing is necessary to provide the account and which is optional.
Start with data protection by default
European Commission guidance describes data protection by default as processing personal data with the highest privacy protection. In practical terms, a provider should collect only data necessary for the stated purpose, keep it for the shortest period that purpose requires and restrict access to people who need it.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Use that principle as a test of every feature. A budgeting assistant may need your transaction categories, but it may not need your contact list or precise location. A fraud system may need device and payment signals, but that does not automatically justify retaining a detailed behavioural profile indefinitely. If a setting is switched on for convenience rather than account security, treat it as optional until the bank explains why it is required.
Read the privacy notice before activating AI features
Open the bank’s current privacy notice and the in-app explanation for each AI function before enabling budgeting, categorisation, coaching, personalisation or a conversational assistant. Record the answers to these questions:
- Who is the controller? Identify the legal entity deciding why and how your data is processed. Note any separate companies acting as processors.
- What is the exact purpose? Look for separate descriptions of service delivery, fraud prevention, model development, marketing and personalisation. A broad phrase such as “improving services” needs clarification.
- Which data is used? Check whether the feature uses transaction descriptions, merchant names, balances, location, device identifiers, voice recordings, contacts or behavioural signals.
- How long is each category retained? A retention period for regulatory records is not necessarily the same as the period for an AI profile or conversation history.
- Who receives the data? Look for cloud, analytics, customer-support and model-service processors, along with the countries where they operate.
- Is the use optional? The notice or settings should distinguish a necessary security check from optional profiling or personalisation. If an opt-out exists, verify that the app actually records it.
Pseudonymisation is not the same as irreversible anonymisation. If a provider says data is anonymised, ask whether it can still be linked back to your account or combined with other information. Keep a copy or screenshot of the notice and your settings; wording and controls can change after an app update.

Find out what happens to transaction data
Your transaction history can reveal health appointments, religious donations, political activity, employment, relationships and daily routines. Ask the bank, in writing if possible, whether it is used for any of the following distinct purposes:
Fraud detection
Machine-learning fraud detection can add a useful security control. It may compare a payment with device, IP, location or transaction patterns and trigger a step-up check. The bank should explain what signals are collected, how long they are retained and whether a human reviews a blocked or disputed payment.

Model training
Training a model is different from running a fraud check. Ask whether identifiable, pseudonymised or aggregated transactions are included in training data; whether your data is combined with other customers’ data; whether it is sent to a third-party model provider; and whether you can object or request deletion. Do not assume that a statement saying data is used to “improve AI” means it is anonymous.
Personalisation and marketing
Spending categories, predicted cash flow and product recommendations may rely on profiling. Ask whether optional personalisation can be disabled without losing core banking access. Marketing consent should not be treated as a condition of using a payment account unless the provider explains a specific legal requirement.
Human review and automated decisions
Find out whether an automated score can decline a payment, freeze access or change an offer. Ask how to request human review, how a decision is explained and where to appeal. Keep the bank’s answer with your records, especially if the system has produced a false fraud alert.
Use the app’s privacy controls deliberately
After reading the notices, configure the app rather than accepting the default profile. Menu names differ, but the controls usually appear under Privacy, Security, Personalisation, Connected apps or Data permissions.
- Disable optional personalisation. Turn off spending-based offers, personalised coaching and behavioural advertising unless you want those functions.
- Reject unnecessary contact access. A bank may offer contact-based payments, but contact syncing is not required for ordinary account access. Leave it off if you do not use the feature.
- Limit location. Choose approximate or while-in-use location where the app allows it. Disable precise location unless a particular security or payment function genuinely needs it.
- Review microphone and camera access. Keep camera access only when scanning a document or QR code. Do not grant continuous microphone access to a support assistant without understanding whether conversations are recorded.
- Turn off optional conversation history. If an AI assistant stores chats, delete old conversations and disable retention when possible. Never paste passwords, one-time codes or full account numbers into a chat.
- Check notifications. Lock-screen previews can expose balances and payee names. Use generic alerts or hide sensitive content while retaining transaction notifications.
- Revisit settings after updates. A new feature can introduce a fresh consent request or restore a default. Check permissions after every major app or operating-system update.
Secure access with two independent factors
Under PSD2, strong customer authentication (SCA) applies when a payer accesses an account online, initiates an electronic payment or performs a remote action that may imply fraud risk. The European Banking Authority defines it as authentication using at least two independent elements from three categories:

| Category | Examples | Privacy and security notes |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | A password, passphrase or PIN | Use a unique passphrase; never reuse it for email or another financial service. |
| Possession | A registered phone, authenticator or supported hardware key | Protect the device or key and understand the recovery process before you lose it. |
| Inherence | A fingerprint or face match | Confirm whether the biometric check stays on the device or is also used for behavioural profiling. |
The factors must be independent: compromising one should not automatically compromise the other. A machine-learning device, IP or location signal can strengthen fraud detection, but EBA guidance treats such signals as additional controls, not substitutes for the required SCA elements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre biometric logins safe?
Biometric unlock can be convenient and, when the match is performed by the phone’s secure hardware, the bank may receive only a success or failure result rather than your raw fingerprint or face image. That is not universal. Some services use behavioural biometrics, such as typing rhythm, swiping patterns or how you hold the phone, and those signals can create a detailed profile.
Ask four questions before enabling a biometric option:
- Does the biometric template remain on the device, or is any template or behavioural signal sent to the bank?
- Is the biometric required for core access, or can you choose a passcode or another possession factor?
- What happens if the phone is shared, enrolled with another person’s fingerprint or compromised?
- Can the bank explain, restrict or delete behavioural data and provide a non-biometric alternative?
Use a strong device passcode even when biometrics are enabled. A short or reused passcode weakens the protection around the biometric sensor and the banking app.
When a FIDO2 security key is useful
A FIDO2 or WebAuthn security key can provide the possession factor without relying on a text message. It is a practical option for a bank that explicitly supports hardware-key registration in its app or web service. Compatibility is provider-specific: a key cannot be assumed to work merely because it is FIDO2-certified.

Register the key through the bank’s documented security menu, create a backup key if the bank permits it, and test the sign-in and payment flow before depending on it. Confirm the recovery process first. If recovery falls back to a weak email or phone procedure, the strongest factor may be bypassed when the key is lost. Never buy a key on the assumption that a particular European bank supports it; verify the bank’s current FIDO2 or WebAuthn instructions.
Protect the phone, app and recovery path
- Install the banking app only from the official app store and verify the publisher name. Do not use modified packages or links sent in messages.
- Keep the operating system, browser and banking app current so security fixes are installed promptly.
- Do not bank on a rooted or jailbroken device. Those configurations can let other software interfere with secure storage or capture screens.
- Use a unique banking passphrase and a device lock that is required immediately after the screen turns off.
- Enable the bank’s strongest available MFA and transaction alerts. Never disclose a one-time code or approve a prompt you did not initiate.
- Review the trusted-device list. Remove old phones, tablets and browsers, especially after selling or repairing a device.
- Secure account-recovery channels. Protect the email account and phone number used for recovery with their own MFA, and keep backup codes offline if the bank supplies them.
An unexpected login notification, password-reset message or approval request is a possible account-takeover attempt. Open the app directly rather than following the message link, check recent activity and contact the bank through a number you already trust.
Control open-banking and third-party access
AI budgeting tools and financial dashboards often connect through open-banking permissions. In the bank’s consent area, identify every third-party provider, the accounts and data it can access, the purpose and the expiry date. Revoke permissions you no longer recognise or need. Deleting an app does not necessarily revoke a consent held by the provider, so remove it from the bank’s own consent manager as well.
Check whether a connection is read-only or can initiate payments. A read-only data permission still exposes a detailed financial history; a payment permission carries a different level of risk and should be reviewed more frequently. Save confirmation of each revocation and watch for a final synchronisation or deletion notice from the third party.

When choosing or changing providers, use the same questions for each candidate. A polished AI assistant is not a privacy advantage if the provider cannot explain its data flows or recovery controls.

| Comparison area | What to verify | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Minimisation and retention | Specific data fields, purpose-bound collection and retention periods for transactions, chats and profiles | One indefinite period covering every purpose or a vague “as long as necessary” statement |
| AI transparency | Separate explanations for fraud scoring, model training, support and personalisation; information about human review | “AI may analyse data” without describing inputs, outputs or review |
| Profiling controls | A clear switch to disable optional profiling and personalised marketing without losing basic banking | Consent bundled with unrelated terms or no usable opt-out |
| Authentication | Independent MFA factors, device binding, transaction signing and a documented recovery route | SMS-only recovery, unclear trusted-device management or support that asks for codes |
| Open-banking controls | Named providers, scope, expiry, read/write permissions and one-tap revocation | No central consent list or no evidence that revocation was processed |
| Processors and transfers | Processor categories, transfer safeguards and the countries involved | Unidentified “partners” or no explanation of cross-border processing |
| Alerts and incidents | Immediate payment and login alerts, a 24-hour reporting route and clear fraud-dispute steps | Delayed notifications or support reachable only through an in-app chatbot |
Exercise your GDPR rights
Use the privacy contact named by the bank to ask for access to personal data, correction of inaccurate information, erasure where the legal conditions apply, restriction of processing, portability or objection to a particular use. You can also ask for an explanation of profiling, the legal basis for processing and the retention period.
Make a request specific: identify the feature, date range and type of data, and distinguish fraud prevention from optional marketing or model development. Ask how the bank handles a human review if an automated system has blocked a payment or account. Keep the submitted request, identity-verification record and the bank’s response. Some data may have to be retained for legal or fraud-prevention obligations, so an erasure request may be limited; the bank should explain the reason rather than silently ignoring it.
What to do after a suspected exposure
- Use a known-clean device to change the banking passphrase and the email password connected to the account.
- Revoke unknown sessions, trusted devices, open-banking consents and third-party app connections.
- Contact the bank through its official fraud channel, report unauthorised transactions and ask whether the account needs to be locked or the payment instrument replaced.
- Preserve notification emails, screenshots, dates, transaction references and support case numbers.
- Check other accounts for reused credentials and enable MFA where it is missing.
- Ask the bank what data was involved, when it was accessed, whether an AI or third-party processor was involved and what remedial steps are available.
Do not install a “security” app at the request of an unsolicited caller, share a one-time code, or approve a login prompt while speaking to someone who contacted you first. Genuine support should not require those actions.

A maintenance routine that keeps protection effective
Privacy protection is not a one-time consent decision. Once a month, review login and payment alerts, trusted devices, open-banking permissions, AI and personalisation settings, and recent privacy-notice changes. After changing phones, travelling, losing a device or disputing a payment, perform the review immediately. Keep the bank’s privacy contact and fraud number in a secure place, separate from links in messages.
The most defensible setup is a bank that minimises data, states exactly how AI is used, lets you disable optional profiling, supports independent MFA and provides a practical recovery and rights process. Your own habits then close the remaining gaps: unique credentials, a locked and updated device, cautious approvals and regular consent reviews.
