A legitimate application may ask for sensitive identity and financial details; the key is to verify the channel and understand the account agreement before you provide them.
What information may a broker ask for?
A brokerage application may request your Social Security number or other tax identification number, along with information about your identity and finances. That can be a normal part of opening an account—not proof by itself that the request is fraudulent. FINRA advises applicants to answer application questions accurately and review the application and accompanying agreements. The SEC says the account agreement determines your legal rights, so read and understand it before signing.

The important distinction is how the request reaches you. Enter sensitive details in the broker’s genuine account-opening flow, not in response to an unexpected email, text, advertisement, or look-alike website. Before you start, open the broker’s official app or type a known web address or use a bookmark. The SEC cautions that HTTPS or a padlock icon alone does not prove that a site is genuine; a fake site can imitate those cues. How can you secure your login?
Use a unique password and enable MFA
Choose a strong password you do not use for email, shopping, or any other account. A password manager can help generate and protect a different password for each service. Turn on MFA in the broker’s account-security settings. MFA combines two or more different types of factors; a password plus a one-time code is one example. Available methods differ by broker, so check the firm’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular option is offered.

Consider a security key only if the broker supports it
The SEC advises asking whether a firm offers a security token or similar device. A physical security key or token can be an additional authentication option, but it is useful only if the broker supports it. Check the firm’s current security guidance for compatible methods; no single tool guarantees that an account cannot be taken over. FINRA’s account-takeover guidance describes MFA and password-manager practices.
How do you avoid fake login pages and unsafe devices?
Do not follow a login link in an unexpected message just because the branding or address looks familiar. Navigate to the broker using a known address, bookmark, or its official app, and check that you are dealing with the intended firm before entering credentials. HTTPS is not enough to establish authenticity.

- Avoid downloads from unknown sources, especially files or apps promoted in unsolicited messages.
- Be cautious when signing in on public devices or over public wireless networks.
- When finished, use the brokerage account’s logout control; simply closing the browser may not end the session.

How can you protect transfers and linked payment accounts?
Account access can expose financial information and give a fraudster an opportunity to change a password, lock you out, or move money. The SEC describes fraudulent wire transfers to an outside checking account as an online-brokerage risk, and its April 23, 2026 identity-theft alert says an account takeover may enable fund transfers. Review recent transactions and pay particular attention to changes to linked financial accounts and withdrawals or transfers you did not initiate.

If you receive an unexpected request about a transfer or a linked account, verify it with the broker using a contact method from its official app or website—not the contact details in the message. Check your account agreement and the broker’s current procedures for how transfers are controlled and how suspected fraud is reported. Recovery options and timing depend on the agreement, transfer method, circumstances, and the broker’s response; there is no single outcome that applies to every case. What should you do if your account may be compromised?
- Contact the broker promptly. Use a trusted phone number or the official app or website to report suspected theft, unauthorized access, or an unfamiliar transaction.
- Ask what protections to apply. Follow the firm’s instructions for securing the account and addressing any linked-account changes or transfers.
- Keep relevant details. Preserve suspicious messages and note transaction details while you follow the broker’s guidance.
The SEC’s April 23, 2026 alert advises prompt contact because account takeover can lead to password resets, loss of access, transfers, or theft of personal information. FINRA’s April 7, 2026 alert defines account takeover as criminals using stolen information—including passwords or MFA codes—or cyber-enabled fraud to gain unauthorized access to personal accounts.

What should you check before choosing or opening an account?
There is no universal security ranking established by these regulator materials, and brokers’ features and procedures vary. Before relying on a particular safeguard, check the firm’s current official materials for:
- Which MFA methods it supports, including whether a physical security key or token works.
- What the account agreement says about protecting credentials and responsibility for account information.
- How linked bank accounts and withdrawals are controlled.
- How to report suspected fraud through a verified channel.
The SEC notes that many firms take the position in their agreements that customers are responsible for protecting account information such as usernames, passwords, and account numbers. That describes the position many agreements take, not a universal legal rule. Review the specific broker’s account agreement and current security and fraud-reporting instructions.
