How to protect your iPhone from zero-click spyware and mercenary malware

Protecting an iPhone from zero-click spyware starts with current software and account security, not a case or antivirus app. Install the latest iOS and security updates, use a long passcode with Face ID or Touch ID, enable two-factor authentication, choose a unique Apple Account password, turn on Stolen Device Protection, install apps only from the App Store, use unique passwords or passkeys, and treat unexpected links and attachments as hostile.

If you have a credible reason to believe you are being individually targeted—or Apple sends you a threat notification—also enable Lockdown Mode on every supported Apple device and obtain expert assistance. Lockdown Mode is deliberately disruptive; it is intended for a small, unusually high-risk group rather than for every iPhone owner.

What zero-click mercenary spyware is—and who needs to worry

Zero-click spyware exploits a device without requiring the victim to tap a malicious link or install an app. Mercenary spyware is the most targeted version of this threat: highly funded operators develop and purchase sophisticated exploits for a small list of specific people, such as journalists, activists, diplomats, lawyers, researchers, executives or political figures.

Apple describes these campaigns as exceptionally sophisticated and globally ongoing. Apple says an operation can cost millions of dollars and that individual exploits often have a short shelf life because defensive updates close the vulnerability. Apple also says the vast majority of users will never be targeted. Since 2021, Apple has sent threat notifications multiple times a year and says it has notified users in more than 150 countries (Apple, 2026).

The practical distinction is risk, not whether ordinary security matters. Everyone benefits from updates and account hardening. Lockdown Mode is an additional, optional control for people with a credible reason to believe they are personally targeted by a highly capable operation.

Do these protections first: the baseline for every iPhone

These controls reduce common compromise routes and improve your position even if you never need Lockdown Mode. Complete them on the iPhone and on other Apple devices linked to the same account.

  1. Install the latest iOS and security updates promptly. Open Settings > General > Software Update, install the offered update, and allow the phone to restart. Repeat the check until no newer update is offered. Update linked Apple devices as well.
  2. Use a long passcode and biometrics. In Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode), replace a short or reused code with the longest passcode you can reliably remember. Keep Face ID or Touch ID enabled for routine unlocking, while remembering that the passcode remains the underlying protection.
  3. Secure the Apple Account. Turn on two-factor authentication, use a strong password that is unique to the account, and review the trusted phone numbers and devices associated with it. Do not share verification codes.
  4. Enable Stolen Device Protection. In Settings > Face ID & Passcode, open Stolen Device Protection and switch it on. This adds safeguards when the phone is away from familiar locations.
  5. Keep software distribution narrow. Install apps from the App Store. Do not install an app, configuration profile or mobile-device-management enrollment merely because a message, call or website tells you to.
  6. Use unique credentials everywhere. Prefer a unique password or a passkey for each service. A password manager can generate and store credentials so a breach at one service does not unlock another.
  7. Handle unsolicited content as untrusted. Do not open unexpected links or attachments, even when the sender appears familiar. Verify through a separate, known channel before opening a file or following a link.

These steps are necessary hygiene, but they cannot guarantee protection from an operation using a new, targeted exploit. A person at elevated risk should pair them with a specific threat assessment and, when appropriate, Lockdown Mode.

When Lockdown Mode is the right choice

Apple calls Lockdown Mode “an optional, extreme protection that’s designed for the very few individuals who, because of who they are or what they do, might be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats such as targeted mercenary spyware.” It reduces attack surface by disabling or restricting features that can be abused, at the cost of convenience and compatibility.

Use it when your risk is credible and personal

  • You have received an Apple Threat Notification.
  • You work in a role that can attract targeted surveillance and have specific intelligence, incidents or threats suggesting you are being selected individually.
  • A qualified digital-security adviser recommends it as part of an incident-response plan.

Being a public-facing professional does not automatically mean Lockdown Mode is necessary. Apple’s own description is intentionally narrow: this is an extreme control for an unusually high-risk minority. For most people, the baseline controls above provide the appropriate balance of security and usability.

Understand the trade-off before enabling it

Lockdown Mode can interrupt normal communication, browsing, sharing and accessory workflows. Tell colleagues how to reach you through an already established channel, and expect to make temporary exceptions for trusted websites or contacts. Do not disable it casually if you are responding to a threat notification; get advice first.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode safely

  1. Update first. Finish the baseline update process on the iPhone and every supported Apple device you use. Apple says the latest software is needed for Lockdown Mode’s complete protections.
  2. Open the control. On iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
  3. Read the feature warnings. Review the communication, browsing, sharing and accessory limitations, then choose Turn On Lockdown Mode and restart when prompted.
  4. Cover the whole device set. Enable the mode on each supported Apple device linked to your work and personal accounts. A paired Apple Watch is enabled automatically from the iPhone.
  5. Document deliberate exceptions. If a trusted site must work, add only that site through the Lockdown Mode controls. Keep the exception list minimal and remove entries you no longer need.
  6. Recheck after major changes. When you add a device, change accounts or install a major system update, confirm that Lockdown Mode remains enabled where you expect it.

Lockdown Mode is a device setting, not a substitute for account recovery planning. Keep recovery contacts, trusted numbers and an expert contact method available without relying on a potentially compromised communication channel.

What Lockdown Mode changes on an iPhone

Apple’s security documentation groups the effect across background services, connectivity, device management, FaceTime, Game Center, Mail, Messages, Photos, Safari, System Settings and WebKit. The exact behavior can change as Apple updates its operating systems, but these user-visible restrictions are the important ones to plan for:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Area What you should expect Practical consequence
Messages Most message attachments other than images are blocked; link previews are disabled. Ask contacts to send essential information as plain text or images through an established conversation.
Web browsing Complex web technologies, including just-in-time JavaScript compilation, are disabled unless you explicitly exclude a trusted site. Some sites may render incorrectly or lose interactive functions. Do not add an exception for an unfamiliar domain.
FaceTime and service requests Incoming invitations and service requests—including FaceTime calls—are blocked when you have not previously contacted the initiator. People who need to reach you should establish contact first through a channel you already trust.
Sharing and collaboration Features such as SharePlay, Shared Albums, FaceTime Live Photos and FaceTime Continuity Handoff are limited. Plan another way to exchange media or collaborate during the protection period.
Mail and background activity Background services and some Mail behaviors are restricted to reduce exposed processing. Push or automatic activity may be less predictable; open the app when you need to check.
Connectivity and accessories Some connection requests and accessories are restricted. The iPhone must be unlocked before it will communicate with wired accessories while Lockdown Mode is active. Unlock before using a wired computer, storage device or other accessory, and do not treat a blocked connection as a fault.
Device management and system features Some device-management, Game Center, Photos and System Settings functions are limited. Enterprise or family workflows may require an administrator’s documented alternative.

The point of these restrictions is to remove high-risk parsing and interaction paths, not to make the phone invulnerable. Keep the software current and follow specialist advice if you suspect an active compromise.

How to verify an Apple Threat Notification

Apple says its threat notifications are high-confidence alerts that a user has been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack and should be taken very seriously. A genuine notification can appear in three places:

  • On the iPhone Lock Screen and inside Settings.
  • At email addresses associated with the Apple Account.
  • As a banner after signing in to account.apple.com.

Use a no-click verification path

  1. Do not tap a link in the email or message. Open a browser yourself and type account.apple.com into the address bar, or use the Apple Account settings already on your device.
  2. Sign in normally and look for the notification banner and Apple’s in-account instructions.
  3. Compare the alert shown in the account and on the device. Treat an email that exists only in your inbox as unverified.
  4. Do not open an attached file, install an app or profile, or disclose a password or verification code while checking the alert.

Apple says it will never ask a recipient of a threat notification by email or phone to click a link, open a file, install an app or profile, provide an Apple Account password, or provide a verification code. Those requests are phishing indicators, even if the message uses Apple logos or an urgent tone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do after a genuine notification

  1. Preserve the alert. Save the notification details and record when and where it appeared. Avoid deleting messages or resetting devices before an adviser tells you to do so.
  2. Follow the in-account instructions. Use the notice displayed after signing in to your Apple Account rather than instructions supplied in a forwarded email.
  3. Enable Lockdown Mode. Apply it across supported Apple devices after completing the software updates described earlier.
  4. Contact an incident-response expert. Apple recommends Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline for emergency assistance. Use a verified contact route and explain that you received an Apple Threat Notification.
  5. Protect the surrounding accounts. From a device and network you trust, review account sessions, trusted numbers, recovery methods and high-value services. Change credentials only with guidance if an investigation may need the current state preserved.
  6. Coordinate communications. Tell close contacts that unexpected links, files or new accounts claiming to be you may be malicious. Establish a previously agreed channel for urgent requests.

A notification is not a reason to confront a suspected operator or publish technical details immediately. The priority is to preserve evidence, reduce exposure and obtain qualified help.

Ordinary hardening or Lockdown Mode?

The two approaches are complementary, but they serve different risk levels and impose different costs.

Decision axis Ordinary hardening Lockdown Mode
Target-risk level Appropriate for everyone, including people with no evidence of individual targeting. For people with a credible reason to believe they are personally targeted, especially anyone who receives an Apple Threat Notification.
Attack-surface reduction Updates, strong authentication, safer apps and cautious behavior reduce common attack paths. Apple additionally restricts high-risk services, content processing, invitations, web technologies and connections.
Usability impact Little day-to-day disruption. Noticeable limits on attachments, previews, websites, FaceTime requests, sharing, accessories and background behavior.
Cross-device coverage Apply each account and update control wherever you use Apple devices. Enable on every supported device; a paired Apple Watch is enabled automatically from iPhone.
Response support Self-managed security maintenance. Should be paired with specialist guidance when a notification or credible targeting evidence exists.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Turning on Lockdown Mode but leaving another device outdated

Spyware operators can target the least-protected device linked to your work or account. Update each supported device before relying on the mode, then confirm its status individually.

Assuming a security app or accessory blocks an exploit

A case, screen protector, Faraday pouch, antivirus app or generic security book does not provide the software exploit-surface reduction Apple documents for Lockdown Mode. Spend effort first on updates, account controls, device settings and expert response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clicking the “verification” link in an alert email

Close the message and type account.apple.com yourself. A legitimate notification can be confirmed in the account and on the device without using the email’s link.

Sharing a verification code with a caller

End the call. Apple’s threat-notification process does not require you to disclose a code or password by phone or email. Verify through the account interface and contact an expert through a separately verified address.

Disabling Lockdown Mode to make one feature work

First try a documented trusted-site exception or an alternative communication method. If a work requirement conflicts with the protection, ask a mobile-security adviser to assess the risk before switching the mode off.

Resetting or replacing the phone immediately

A reset can destroy evidence and does not secure linked accounts by itself. Preserve the alert and device state, then obtain incident-response advice before taking irreversible action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical maintenance routine

  • Check for operating-system updates whenever Apple issues a security release and keep automatic update options enabled where they fit your risk model.
  • Review Apple Account trusted devices and phone numbers after travel, staffing changes or a lost device.
  • Audit installed apps and remove anything you no longer need; keep installation restricted to the App Store.
  • Revisit passkeys, passwords and recovery methods for high-value services at regular intervals.
  • Practice verifying an urgent request through a second channel so the safe response is familiar under pressure.
  • If your role makes you a likely target, maintain a relationship with a qualified digital-security organization before an incident occurs.

For most iPhone owners, current software, strong account security and careful handling of unsolicited content are the right answer. Lockdown Mode is the escalation path when the risk is specific and credible, and an Apple Threat Notification should trigger immediate verification and expert help rather than an improvised response.
