How to protect your home from mosquitoes that spread dengue

The most reliable household approach is layered: remove or manage standing water where Aedes mosquitoes breed, keep stored water tightly covered and cleaned weekly, block entry with sound screens, and protect people with label-directed repellent, covering clothing and a mosquito net for daytime sleep. Dengue mosquitoes are active in daylight, so securing the house only at night leaves an important gap.

Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, primarily Aedes aegypti. These mosquitoes commonly live in and around homes and gardens, which makes routine household maintenance a central part of prevention. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets out the transmission and home-protection measures in its dengue guidance.

Why your house and garden are key prevention points

Aedes mosquitoes need small amounts of water to complete their life cycle. A bucket, plant saucer, discarded tire, blocked drain or uncovered tank can become a breeding site after rain or routine household use. Because the mosquitoes often rest and breed close to people, reducing those sites around the property lowers the number of mosquitoes that can enter and bite.

Source reduction and bite protection solve different parts of the problem. Emptying a container addresses the local mosquito population; a screen, repellent, long sleeves or a net helps protect a person when a mosquito is already present. Neither a single product nor a one-time cleanup guarantees that dengue will be prevented. The goal is to make breeding difficult and bites less likely every day.

Run a weekly water-and-yard inspection

Choose a fixed day each week and walk the entire property, including balconies, roof areas, sheds and shared outdoor spaces you are allowed to check. Look for water that has collected in any artificial object, not just obvious puddles. The PAHO/WHO home checklist illustrates the range of places that need attention in and around a house: How to prevent mosquito breeding sites in and around your home.

Use this inspection sequence

  1. Start at the entrance. Check door mats, plant pots, decorative containers, bins and anything left on a porch or balcony.
  2. Move through the garden. Inspect buckets, toys, tools, tarpaulins, wheelbarrows, unused containers and discarded tires. Turn items upside down, remove them, or store them under cover so rain cannot collect.
  3. Check plants and animal-care items. Empty flowerpot saucers and vases. Scrub them before refilling. Empty pet bowls at least weekly, and more often when they become dirty or are exposed to rain.
  4. Inspect drainage. Look at roof gutters, downspouts, drains, flat roofs and low spots where water remains after rainfall. Clear blockages and correct poor drainage where possible.
  5. Finish with storage areas. Examine tanks, barrels, buckets and other containers that hold water, including those kept indoors or in a shed.

Dispose of containers that are no longer needed. For items that must remain outdoors, keep them dry, covered or positioned so they cannot hold rainwater. If a site is on shared or neighboring property, report it to the owner, landlord or local vector-control service rather than entering an area you do not control.

Keep a simple household log

A short checklist on a calendar helps prevent missed areas during the rainy season. Record the date, locations checked and any action taken, such as “gutter cleared” or “tank lid repaired.” After heavy rain, repeat the walk-through instead of waiting for the next scheduled day; new containers may have filled in a few hours.

Manage domestic water storage correctly

Where a household stores water, containers should be covered tightly enough that adult mosquitoes cannot enter. Lids, mesh covers designed for that container and intact seals all serve the entry-blocking purpose; a loose cloth that leaves gaps does not. Keep the cover in place between uses.

Empty and clean storage containers weekly where feasible. When changing the water, brush the inside surfaces of sinks, barrels and similar vessels so eggs or residue attached above the waterline are removed before the container is refilled. WHO and PAHO/WHO describe weekly covering, emptying and cleaning as core household practices in their dengue fact sheet and home guidance.

When a container cannot be emptied

Some tanks or cisterns are needed for daily use. Keep them sealed and check the lid, overflow points and access openings for gaps. If a container is damaged or cannot be closed, ask the local public-health authority what repair or treatment is approved for that type of water. Do not add an unapproved chemical simply because water is standing.

Check the places people commonly overlook

Location or item What to do each week Why it matters
Flowerpots, saucers and vases Empty, scrub and refill with fresh water; remove saucers that are not needed. Small plant containers can hold enough water for breeding.
Pet bowls Empty and wash; keep bowls protected from rain where practical. Outdoor bowls are repeatedly replenished by rain or use.
Discarded tires and containers Dispose of them safely or store them completely under cover. Dark, sheltered cavities can retain water for days.
Gutters, drains and downspouts Remove leaves and sediment; confirm water flows away rather than pooling. Blocked drainage creates hidden standing water.
Tanks, barrels and buckets Keep covered; empty and brush weekly when possible. Large containers can produce many mosquitoes if accessible.
Flat roofs and tarpaulins Remove pooled water and adjust surfaces so rain drains. Shallow pools may persist after the rest of the yard dries.
Pools and managed water features Follow the care and sanitation instructions for the specific installation. Neglected features can become breeding sites.

WHO Europe lists common breeding locations and household measures in its public-health advice on mosquito-borne diseases. The inspection should include both indoor and outdoor items because mosquitoes can use water stored inside a home as well as rainwater outside.

Keep mosquitoes out with physical barriers

Fit insect screens over doors and windows, and keep them in good repair. A screen works only when its frame fits closely and the mesh has no tears or open edges. Repair holes promptly, replace loose seals and keep screened doors closed rather than propped open. If a room has an unscreened entrance, consider using the screened entrance as the routine access point.

Screening is especially useful in rooms where people spend long periods, such as bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. It reduces entry but does not remove mosquitoes already inside, so pair it with source reduction and personal bite protection. WHO recommends screens as part of household dengue prevention in its global dengue guidance and fact sheet.

Screening checks for renters and shared buildings

  • Ask the landlord or building manager to repair torn screens, gaps around frames and doors that do not close fully.
  • For temporary accommodation, use the room with the best-fitting screens and keep doors closed as much as possible.
  • Report standing water in communal courtyards, roof spaces or drainage areas to the responsible manager or local authority.

Protect people when mosquitoes are present

Use an appropriate repellent

WHO identifies repellents containing DEET, picaridin or IR3535 as options for reducing bites. Apply the product exactly as its label directs, including instructions for how much to use, how often to reapply, whether it can be used on children and any precautions for pregnancy, damaged skin or contact with eyes and mouth. Product availability and permitted ages vary by country, so use a formulation legally sold and labeled for your location.

Repellent is for exposed skin or clothing only as the label permits. It does not replace screens or the removal of breeding sites. Wash treated skin according to the label when protection is no longer needed, and store the container out of children’s reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose clothing that reduces exposed skin

When mosquitoes are active, wear loose clothing that covers the arms and legs. Clothing is most useful when it is worn consistently in areas where mosquitoes are present, especially outdoors or in rooms without effective screens. Repellent can be used on exposed areas when the label allows it.

Use a net for daytime sleep

A mosquito net is important for anyone who sleeps during the day, including babies, shift workers and people resting while ill. Tuck the net under the mattress or sleeping surface where possible and check for holes or openings before use. WHO guidance also identifies insecticide-treated nets as an option in relevant settings; use only a treated net supplied and maintained according to its instructions.

Plan around dengue mosquitoes’ daytime activity

The mosquitoes that transmit dengue are active during the day. WHO regional guidance describes heightened activity in the early morning and late afternoon, while other WHO materials refer to dawn and dusk peaks. Treat this as a daylight risk with periods of increased activity, not as a universal timetable that makes other hours safe. The WHO Europe advice on dengue fever explains the daytime pattern.

Use screens and personal protection during daytime household activities, not only after sunset. Take extra care when opening doors, working in a garden, sitting on a balcony or resting near an unscreened window. A person sleeping at midday should use a net just as a person sleeping at night would.

Understand when chemical control is appropriate

Chemical measures depend on the type of water, the local mosquito situation and the approvals in your jurisdiction. WHO outbreak guidance refers to appropriate insecticides for some outdoor water-storage containers and to WHO-prequalified larvicides, used at the correct dose, for non-potable water. These measures are not a general invitation to pour chemicals into household water.

Never treat drinking water with a product unless the label and local public-health authority specifically authorize that use. Do not improvise a dose, mix products or use an agricultural or household chemical in a tank. Ask the local health department or vector-control program which products and application methods are approved for your area. The WHO 2024 global dengue situation guidance describes chemical control as part of context-specific outbreak response.

When to request professional help

Contact a licensed local mosquito or vector-control service when persistent breeding sites cannot be removed, when a shared drainage system remains blocked, or when public-health officials advise treatment. Tell the service where water is collecting, whether the water is potable and what household members, pets or wildlife may be exposed. A legitimate provider should explain the approved treatment, access restrictions and any required re-entry or cleanup steps.

Use a layered protection plan

Measure Primary job Best fit Important limitation
Source reduction Removes places where mosquitoes breed. Every home and garden; repeat weekly and after heavy rain. Does not protect a person from mosquitoes already present.
Door and window screens Blocks entry into rooms. Bedrooms, living areas and frequently used entrances. Torn mesh, open doors and gaps defeat the barrier.
Repellent with DEET, picaridin or IR3535 Reduces bites on exposed skin when used correctly. Outdoor activity or unscreened rooms. Age, application and reapplication rules come from the label.
Covering clothing Reduces exposed skin. Gardening, outdoor chores and other daytime activity. Leaves some areas uncovered unless paired with repellent.
Mosquito net Protects a person while sleeping. Daytime sleepers and resting spaces without reliable screening. Must be intact and tucked or closed correctly.
Approved larvicide or insecticide Controls mosquitoes at specific sites under official direction. Situations identified by local authorities or product instructions. Not for casual use, and not automatically safe for drinking water.

These measures work together: source reduction addresses the surroundings, barriers protect rooms, and personal measures protect people during unavoidable exposure. WHO does not provide a brand ranking, price comparison or universal performance figure for consumer products, so select based on the task, correct fit, label suitability and local availability.

What to do if mosquitoes persist

You removed visible containers but still see mosquitoes

Repeat the inspection at a different time of day and look in less obvious places: tank lids and overflow pipes, gutters, drains, plant saucers, roof depressions, tarpaulin folds and items in neighboring or shared areas. Eggs can remain attached to container surfaces, so emptying without brushing may leave a problem behind. Clear or report sites that you cannot legally or safely access.

Mosquitoes are inside despite screens

Check for tears, unsealed corners, gaps under doors and doors that remain open. Inspect screens from inside the room with the lights on, then repair or replace damaged sections. Also check whether mosquitoes were carried indoors on clothing, plants or containers; screens cannot remove insects that entered before the barrier was closed.

Water storage cannot be cleaned every week

Prioritize a tight, intact cover and ask local health officials for an approved maintenance or treatment schedule. Keep a written date for the next cleaning and arrange help if the container is too large or heavy to handle safely. Do not compensate for missed cleaning by adding an unapproved chemical.

A household member has dengue

Take extra steps to prevent that person from being bitten: use a screened room or an intact net during daytime rest, apply label-directed repellent when appropriate and remove stagnant water around the home. These actions reduce opportunities for mosquitoes to bite the ill person and then continue circulating around the household. WHO includes this added household protection in its dengue advice at WHO.int.

A practical weekly routine

  1. Pick a recurring inspection day. Walk indoors and outdoors, including shared areas you can access.
  2. Remove breeding opportunities. Empty, discard, cover or reposition water-holding items; clear blocked drainage.
  3. Service storage containers. Keep lids tight, empty where feasible and brush interior surfaces before refilling.
  4. Check barriers. Repair screens, door seals and netting before the next period of daytime activity.
  5. Restock protection. Confirm that repellent is within its use date and that clothing and nets are ready for daytime exposure.
  6. Recheck after rain. Rain can create new sites between weekly visits, so inspect again after a storm.
  7. Escalate unresolved sites. Report communal or inaccessible breeding areas and seek local, licensed advice before any chemical treatment.

For a location-specific dengue alert, approved chemical list, age restriction or vector-control service, consult your local health authority. WHO’s regional advice for Europe is available at Public health advice on mosquito-borne diseases; other regions may issue different schedules and permissions.
