Yes, you can use telehealth more privately, but privacy is not automatic. Before an online visit, use a private room and headphones, keep the screen away from other people, turn off nearby smart speakers and cameras, and use your own updated device on a password-protected home network. Protect the account with a unique password, screen lock, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and encryption. Use the provider’s patient portal, verify unexpected links by calling a known number, and read what the service says about advertising, tracking, retention, deletion, and recordings.
U.S. law also has limits. HIPAA protects information handled by covered health-care providers, health plans, clearinghouses, and their business associates; it does not automatically cover every health app or website. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), state privacy laws, and the service’s own promises may still apply.

What can expose your health information during telehealth?
A video appointment can reveal more than what you say to a clinician. Your name, email address, phone number, IP address, appointment time, device identifiers, location, diagnoses, medications, treatment choices, payment details, and messages may be collected by the provider, its technology vendors, analytics companies, or advertisers. A tracking pixel on an appointment or symptom page can disclose that someone is researching a particular condition even if no diagnosis is typed into a form.

There are several distinct risks:
- Physical eavesdropping: someone in the room may hear the visit or see the screen.
- Account takeover: a reused password or stolen session can expose records and messages.
- Device access: family members, employers, malware, or a lost phone may expose downloaded files.
- Network interception: public Wi-Fi or an untrusted device can make traffic and credentials easier to steal.
- Impersonation and phishing: a fake “appointment” link can capture your login or payment details.
- Secondary use: an app may share activity with advertising or analytics partners under its privacy terms.
Encryption helps protect data in transit, but it cannot stop a person nearby from hearing you, a compromised device from recording you, or a company from using data in ways its terms permit.

Prepare a private space before the appointment
Control who can hear and see
Choose a room where other people cannot overhear. HHS patient guidance recommends headphones, avoiding speakerphone when others could hear, and positioning the device so no one can see the screen. Check windows, open doors, baby monitors, and shared workspaces as well as the room immediately beside you.
Headphones reduce sound leakage but do not make a room private. If you cannot find a private room, tell the clinician at the start and ask whether audio-only care, rescheduling, or another location is safer.
Disable listening and recording devices
Mute or unplug nearby smart speakers, voice assistants, security cameras, tablets, and smart displays. Do not place the appointment where a camera or microphone could capture it unnecessarily. Close other apps that might record the screen or audio, and check whether your telehealth application has an automatic recording or transcription setting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the display out of view
Angle the monitor away from doors and shared rooms. Lower screen brightness if it is visible through a window, and use a privacy screen protector when people may pass behind you. Lock the device immediately when you step away.
Use a personal, updated device
A personal phone, tablet, or computer is preferable to an employer’s or public computer. Work devices may be monitored, centrally backed up, or managed by administrators; public computers may retain browser data or malware. If a work device is your only option, ask the provider whether a phone or secure patient-portal call is available instead.
Update the operating system and apps
Install operating-system, browser, telehealth-app, and security updates promptly. Updates fix vulnerabilities that attackers can use to access cameras, microphones, files, or saved sessions. Download the app only from the device maker’s official app store, and remove apps you no longer need.
Turn on screen protection
- Use a strong device passcode or password rather than an easily guessed pattern.
- Set a short automatic screen-lock period.
- Enable biometric unlocking only as an additional factor, not a substitute for a secure passcode.
- Enable the device’s encryption and “find my device” or remote-wipe feature.
- Do not leave appointment notes, prescriptions, screenshots, or downloaded visit summaries in an unprotected downloads folder.
Delete local copies of health files when they are no longer needed, while keeping any records you are legally or medically required to retain. Empty the recycle bin or recently deleted folder where applicable.

Secure the account and sign-in
Use a unique password
Create a different, long password for every patient portal and health app. Reusing an email or banking password lets an attacker try one stolen credential across multiple services. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords so you do not have to memorize them.
Enable multi-factor authentication
Turn on MFA in the portal’s security settings whenever it is offered. An authenticator app or security key generally provides stronger protection than text messages, although any additional factor is better than a password alone. A FIDO2 security key works only if the particular service supports it; enroll a backup method and store recovery codes offline.
Protect recovery channels
Secure the email account and phone number used for password recovery with their own unique passwords and MFA. Review logged-in sessions and sign out devices you no longer recognize. Never give a one-time code to someone who calls or messages claiming to be support.
Connect safely
Prefer a trusted home network
Use a password-protected home Wi-Fi network with current router firmware and a strong, unique Wi-Fi password. Change the router’s default administrator password. If your home network is unavailable, a cellular connection may be preferable to an open public hotspot, provided your device and account are secure.

Open networks in cafés, hotels, libraries, and airports can enable interception or fake access points. Do not sign in to a health portal over public Wi-Fi unless you have no alternative and understand the risk. Public USB charging ports can be modified to transfer data; use your own charger and a wall outlet or a charge-only adapter.
Understand what the browser lock means
A lock icon or shield means the connection to that website is encrypted. It does not prove that the website belongs to your clinician, that the company will keep data confidential, or that it will not share information for advertising. Check the exact domain name and certificate warning before entering credentials.
Verify the provider and every appointment link
Start from a known address
Open the provider’s official patient portal by typing a saved address or using a bookmark you created previously. Be cautious with links in unsolicited email, text messages, social media, or search advertisements. Attackers can copy logos and appointment language convincingly.

Confirm identity by phone
If a link asks for unusual information, payment, a password, or an MFA code, stop. Call the provider using the number on a previous statement, insurance card, or official paperwork—not the number in the suspicious message—and ask whether the appointment invitation is genuine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the clinician
Confirm the clinician’s name, specialty, licensing information where available, and the organization responsible for the visit. A legitimate service should explain how to contact support and how to obtain your records. Do not assume a polished website or a lock icon establishes medical legitimacy.
Read privacy terms for data collection and sharing
Before creating an account, look for a plain-language privacy notice and answer these questions:
- What information is collected from forms, video, chat, cookies, pixels, device sensors, and location services?
- Is data shared with advertisers, analytics firms, data brokers, contractors, or affiliated companies?
- Can the service use appointment searches or symptom entries for targeted advertising or profiling?
- How long are recordings, transcripts, messages, images, and device identifiers retained?
- Can you delete an account or request deletion, and what must be kept for legal or clinical reasons?
- Does the service sell data, use it for product development, or combine it with information from other sources?
- Will you be notified of a breach, and by what method?
HHS warns that tracking technologies can expose diagnoses, medications, treatments, and care locations. A service can receive sensitive information through a pixel or analytics script even when you never intentionally send a diagnosis to an advertiser. Decline optional cookies and marketing permissions where the service allows it, and use a browser’s privacy controls without assuming they eliminate all tracking.
Know what HIPAA does—and does not—cover
When HIPAA generally applies
HIPAA applies to covered entities such as health-care providers conducting standard electronic transactions, health plans, and health-care clearinghouses, plus business associates handling protected health information for them. A provider’s patient portal and its contracted telehealth technology may therefore be subject to HIPAA obligations, including limits on use and disclosure and safeguards for protected health information.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhy a consumer app may be different
HIPAA is not a universal privacy seal. Information you voluntarily enter into a personal health, fitness, symptom, fertility, or medication app may fall outside HIPAA if the app is not operating for a covered entity or business associate. Read the app’s own terms rather than inferring protection from its medical branding.
Other U.S. protections
State privacy and health-data laws can add rights or restrictions, but coverage and definitions vary by state and by the type of data. The FTC Health Breach Notification Rule covers certain non-HIPAA personal-health-record vendors and was updated in 2024 to clarify coverage of health apps and similar technologies. The FTC has stated that protecting consumers’ sensitive health data is a high priority. These protections do not make every service risk-free; they give regulators and consumers additional remedies when a company’s practices violate applicable rules or promises.

How to interpret “HIPAA compliant”
Treat “HIPAA compliant” as a statement about legal scope and safeguards, not a guarantee that no breach, tracking, insider access, or advertising use can occur. Ask which entity is the covered provider, which vendors are business associates, and whether the app’s consumer features are covered by the same arrangement.
Compare services before choosing one
Use the following questions to compare a hospital portal, independent telehealth service, or consumer health app. If a service does not answer a question, record that uncertainty rather than assuming the most favorable answer.
| Privacy factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Provider identity | Named organization, clinician credentials, licensing information, and a verifiable phone number | Helps distinguish a real medical service from an impersonation site |
| Patient portal | Whether appointments, messages, results, and records are accessed through a secure portal | Centralized sign-in and established support can reduce phishing risk |
| Encryption and MFA | Encryption in transit and at rest, MFA methods, session controls, and device requirements | Reduces interception and account-takeover risk |
| Recording policy | Whether visits, audio, transcripts, or screen images are recorded; who can access them | Recordings may contain more information than the medical note |
| Retention and deletion | Retention periods, deletion requests, backups, and records that must be kept | Data remains exposed for as long as it exists |
| Tracking and advertising | Pixels, analytics partners, targeted advertising, sale or sharing, and opt-out controls | Marketing systems can infer sensitive interests |
| Breach notification | Which law or contract governs notification and how notices are delivered | Fast notice lets you change passwords and protect accounts |
| Legal status | Whether the relevant entity is a HIPAA covered entity or business associate, and what other laws apply | Determines which duties and rights may protect the data |
What to do on the day of the visit
- Prepare the room: close the door, use headphones, move the screen out of sight, and disable nearby microphones and cameras.
- Check the device: install pending updates, close unnecessary apps, confirm the camera and microphone permissions, and enable auto-lock.
- Check the network: connect to your password-protected home Wi-Fi or a trusted cellular connection; avoid public hotspots.
- Open the portal directly: use your saved bookmark or typed address rather than an unexpected link.
- Verify the appointment: confirm the clinician and organization. Call a known number if anything looks different.
- Minimize disclosure: remove unrelated people from the room, share only information needed for care, and do not permit unnecessary screen sharing.
- Ask about recording: find out whether the visit is recorded or transcribed and how the file is stored.
- Finish securely: sign out, lock the device, and delete temporary downloads or screenshots you do not need.
After the visit: records, messages, and follow-up
Download only the records you need, store them in an encrypted folder or a device protected by a strong passcode, and avoid sending them through ordinary email unless the provider tells you the channel is secure. Check the recipient address before sending prescriptions, test results, insurance details, or identification.
Review portal access logs and account notifications if available. Remove old authorized devices and revoke third-party app connections you no longer use. If you shared a device with someone else, sign out of the portal and clear saved passwords and browser autofill.
If you suspect a scam, exposure, or breach
A suspicious link or fake clinician
Do not enter credentials or payment details. Close the page, contact the provider through a known number, and report the message to the service. If you entered a password, change it immediately from the genuine portal and anywhere else that password was reused; then revoke active sessions and enable MFA.
A lost or stolen device
Use remote location and wipe tools, change portal and email passwords from another trusted device, and notify the provider if records or messages may have been accessible. Ask whether the organization can invalidate sessions or tokens.

A suspected company breach or unauthorized sharing
Save relevant notices and screenshots, ask the service what data was involved and when, and follow its account-protection instructions. You may also contact the appropriate state regulator or the FTC when a non-HIPAA health app’s practices appear inconsistent with its promises or applicable breach-notification rules.
Common questions answered
Is a telehealth video call private if it is encrypted?
Encryption protects the connection between your device and the service, but it does not prevent nearby people, a compromised device, recordings, screenshots, or permitted secondary uses. Physical privacy and account security are still necessary.
Does a lock icon mean the medical website is trustworthy?
No. It indicates an encrypted connection to that domain. Verify the domain and provider independently, because a fraudulent website can also use encryption.
Can my employer see a telehealth visit?
If you use an employer-managed device or network, administrators may have monitoring or logging capabilities. Use a personal device and trusted home connection when possible, and ask the provider about safer alternatives.
Should I use a password manager?
Yes, for most people it is the practical way to create a different strong password for every service. Protect the manager with a strong master password and MFA, and keep recovery information secure.
Are health apps covered by HIPAA?
Some are, when they operate for a covered provider or business associate; many consumer apps are not. Determine which entity provides the service and read its privacy terms. FTC and state protections may still apply.
