Protect an emergency fund by keeping it safe, accessible, and sized around your essential expenses—not by chasing returns or trying to predict a recession. Start with an amount you can realistically save, keep the money in an eligible deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank or an insured credit-union account, and use it for genuine unplanned costs or income loss.
Set a target that fits your household
An emergency fund is cash reserved for unplanned expenses or financial emergencies, including a loss of income. The right amount depends on your household’s circumstances, so begin with the costs you would need to cover if income fell or an unexpected bill arrived.

The FDIC reports that financial experts generally recommend at least six months of living expenses in a federally insured product. Treat that as a benchmark, not a universal requirement or a government-mandated amount. A smaller reserve can still provide some security, and a realistic starting goal is more useful than a target that feels impossible.
Build the number from essential costs
- List essential monthly expenses. Include the bills and necessities you would prioritize during an income interruption.
- Consider likely shocks. Think about unplanned costs that could affect your household, such as a necessary repair or medical bill.
- Choose an initial goal. Set a reachable first milestone, then revise it as your costs, income, or household risks change.
There is no single savings percentage that works for everyone. CFPB research published in 2022 found that obligatory expenses and insufficient income can impede emergency saving; it described conditions following pandemic-era turbulence, not a 2026 estimate of how many households face those constraints.

Choose a safe, accessible place for the cash
For emergency money, weigh how quickly you can reach it, whether the funds qualify for deposit insurance, fees and minimums, withdrawal restrictions, and the risk of losing or spending the money unintentionally. A dedicated savings account at an insured institution is a straightforward option for accessible cash.
| Option | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Eligible savings or checking deposit at an FDIC-insured bank | Covered deposits are insured subject to applicable limits and ownership rules. Check fees, minimums, and access terms. |
| Money market deposit account at an FDIC-insured bank | This is a deposit-account category the FDIC lists as covered, subject to applicable limits and ownership rules. Do not confuse it with a money market mutual fund, which is an investment and is not FDIC-insured. |
| Certificate of deposit (CD) | The FDIC lists CDs among covered deposit types, but a CD may impose an early-withdrawal penalty. Review its terms before placing money you may need urgently. |
| Cash or prepaid card | These may offer convenient access, but consider the risks and terms. Physical cash can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. |
Understand what FDIC insurance covers
The FDIC’s consumer guidance states that eligible deposits at FDIC-insured banks are insured up to at least $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. It lists checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and CDs as covered deposit types. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and crypto assets are not FDIC-insured deposits; buying an investment product through a bank does not make it insured.
Coverage is aggregated by ownership category at the same institution. If your balances are large or ownership arrangements are complex, check the FDIC’s official materials or calculator rather than assuming each account has a separate limit.

Make saving workable when money is tight
The CFPB recommends practical habits rather than a fixed contribution rule. Track when income arrives and bills are due, choose a specific savings goal, and set aside a manageable amount when cash is available. Even a small reserve can help.
- Review your income and bill schedule so you can see when money is actually available.
- If recurring transfers suit your cash flow, monitor the account balance and adjust or pause transfers when circumstances change. A transfer that triggers an overdraft fee defeats the purpose.
- Consider directing part or all of a tax refund or another one-time payment to the reserve if your immediate needs allow.
- Revisit the plan when your pay, essential costs, or household situation changes.
If there is not enough left after obligatory expenses, that is a financial constraint—not simply a failure of discipline. Focus on protecting what you can and reassessing the plan as circumstances permit.

If borrowing is unavoidable during a crisis, compare the costs of available options. The Department of Labor also describes insurance as a way to protect assets from major financial disasters. Avoid blanket decisions to stop all debt payments or liquidate retirement savings: the financial, tax, and contractual consequences depend on individual circumstances.
Keep the plan easy to maintain
A notebook, spreadsheet, or notes app can help you record essential expenses, your savings goal, and progress. A dedicated budgeting product is not necessary; use a method you will actually revisit.
