Protect your Discord account by treating unexpected invites and messages as untrusted until you verify them, tightening who can contact you, and enabling a phishing-resistant sign-in method. If you already clicked a suspicious link or entered your password, stop interacting with it and use Discord’s official recovery route from a trusted browser or device.
How can you tell if a Discord invite or message is suspicious?
Look at what the message asks you to do, not just who appears to have sent it. Discord warns that a familiar person’s account may be compromised, so a link from a friend or server contact is not automatically safe. Discord’s safety guidance identifies offers of free Nitro or other rewards, threats about account status, and requests for login credentials as phishing warning signs.

- Be wary of unexpected invites, bot direct messages, and offers that create urgency or promise something valuable for clicking.
- Do not enter your Discord password, personal information, or payment details on a page reached through an unsolicited message.
- Do not add a bot to a server to claim a prize. Discord Trust & Safety warns that these bots may compromise the server and advises users to report them. See Discord’s guidance on scam and phishing bots.
If you are unsure, do not follow the message’s link. Open Discord through the app or by typing its address yourself, then check the relevant server or account information there. A message that appears to come from Discord staff is not proof of legitimacy: Discord says staff will never contact users directly in-app about support matters. Discord’s compromised-account guidance explains this warning.

What should you check before joining a server?
When you open an invite in Discord, review the join screen and its privacy choices before accepting. The flow lets you adjust whether members of that server can send you direct messages. Turning off member DMs can reduce unwanted contact after joining; it does not verify that the invite is genuine or make a malicious destination safe.

Discord also offers Safer Direct Messaging under User Settings > Privacy & Safety. The feature scans messages from non-friends for harmful content. Treat it as an added message-safety measure, not as a way to validate links or replace your own judgment. Discord’s safety article points to this setting.
How do you strengthen Discord sign-in?
Use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Discord supports security keys and passkeys, authenticator apps, and SMS. Its current MFA guidance recommends security keys/passkeys; these are phishing-resistant and can be enrolled from User Settings > Account > Security Keys. Discord’s MFA setup page describes the options and setup.

| Sign-in option | What to know | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Security key or passkey | Discord recommends this option and describes it as phishing-resistant. | Requires access to the enrolled key or passkey-capable device and a recovery plan if it is lost. |
| Authenticator app | Supported by Discord as an MFA option. | Keep recovery codes safe in case you lose access to the device or app. |
| SMS | Supported, but Discord warns that messages can be intercepted and phone numbers can be affected by SIM swaps. Its guidance calls SMS better than no MFA, but not by much. | It depends on access to your phone number and is a weaker choice than the methods Discord recommends. |
Save Discord’s backup codes somewhere secure when you set up MFA. They are single-use recovery codes, and Discord says its support team cannot remove MFA from an account. Discord says users can register up to 16 security keys or passkeys at one time; that is a registration limit, not a security guarantee. Discord’s passkey FAQ covers passkeys and storage options.

How should you review apps connected to Discord?
Check Authorized Apps periodically, and especially after clicking a suspicious link or granting access to an unfamiliar service. Remove any app you do not recognize or no longer want connected. Discord’s account-security instructions include removal steps for desktop and mobile. Consult Discord’s compromised-account help page for the relevant device steps.

What should you do if you clicked a phishing link?
If you only opened a link, close the page and do not enter information, download files, or approve access. If you submitted your password or other credentials, act promptly from a trusted route rather than returning to the message or suspicious site.
