1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDuring a market panic, treat every urgent message, link, QR code, and transaction request as untrusted until you verify it independently. Your recovery (seed) phrase is the master secret for a self-custody wallet: anyone who gets it can restore the wallet and move its assets. Never give it to support staff, a recovery service, a website, or anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
The safest response is to pause, keep the phrase offline, verify wallet addresses and transaction details on a trusted device, and follow only the wallet maker’s official security and recovery instructions. The steps below cover preparation, panic-time decisions, storage choices, phishing, and what to do if the phrase may already be exposed.

What your seed phrase protects
A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, is the master backup for a self-custody wallet. It can recreate the wallet’s private keys and the accounts controlled by those keys. Possession is the critical issue: a person does not need your name, password, or phone if they have the phrase. Ledger Academy explains that compromising a phrase can affect every account protected by it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Self-custody also changes what recovery means. If you lose both the phrase and the private keys, an outside service generally cannot reset the wallet. An exchange account is different: the exchange controls the account system and provides its own identity and account-recovery process. Do not confuse exchange support with recovery of a self-custody phrase.
Prepare before prices start moving sharply
Make one accurate, offline backup
Write the phrase by hand on a physical medium, in the exact order shown by the wallet, and check every word and its spelling. Do not create a screenshot, photograph, email, note-app entry, cloud document, or chat copy for convenience. Internet-connected devices add account, malware, and accidental-sharing exposure.
Use the wallet maker’s official backup-verification process if one is provided. Wallets differ in how they display, verify, or restore a phrase, so use the documentation for your specific wallet rather than a generic tutorial. A backup that is incomplete, out of order, or copied incorrectly may appear reassuring but fail when you need it.
Protect the physical record
Keep the written phrase private and protected from people who could photograph or copy it. Choose a location that reduces likely damage from fire, water, theft, and loss. Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance recommends considering more than one secure physical location because a single location is a single point of failure. Every additional copy, however, creates another object and location that must be secured; more copies are not automatically safer.
Paper is inexpensive and easy to create but can be damaged. A purpose-built metal seed-phrase plate or capsule is an optional durability choice for readers who want greater resistance to common physical hazards. No particular product has been independently tested here, and metal does not stop someone who can find, read, or steal the words. Access control and location remain essential.

Separate daily-use exposure from long-term storage
Bitcoin.org suggests keeping only an amount suited to everyday use in a connected wallet when that matches your needs. This is a security practice, not a portfolio allocation and not protection against market losses. Holding less in a wallet that is routinely connected can limit the amount immediately exposed if that wallet or a connected application is compromised.
Know the legitimate help path
Before an emergency, bookmark or write down the wallet maker’s official support and recovery documentation using a channel you verified yourself. Check the exact domain, support workflow, and instructions for your wallet. A social-media account, search advertisement, direct message, or phone number supplied by a stranger is not proof of legitimacy.

Use this sequence whenever a message claims your wallet is at risk, a withdrawal is frozen, an airdrop is expiring, or you must act immediately.
- Stop the immediate action. Do not click the link, scan the QR code, connect your wallet, sign a transaction, or move funds while you are being rushed. Close the message and take time to inspect the situation.
- Verify through an independent route. Open the wallet application or service by typing a known address or using an official app you already installed. Do not use the contact details or link in the alarming message. Search-result advertisements and lookalike social accounts can lead to phishing pages.
- Keep the phrase and private keys secret. Never paste them into a website, support form, chat, screen-share session, recovery tool, or browser extension. Bitcoin.org states that no legitimate support team will ask for a seed phrase or private key.
- Read every transaction request. A wallet connection or signature can authorize a malicious application or approval even when the message describes a security check or free reward. If you cannot explain what an approval or transaction does, reject it and consult the wallet’s official documentation.
- Check the full receiving address. Compare the complete address on your trusted device with the intended destination before sending. Do not rely only on a shortened display, a contact label, or the first and last few characters. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, so an address error cannot be undone by support.
- Ignore guaranteed-recovery promises. Someone who says they can recover previously lost cryptocurrency, unlock a wallet for a fee, or retrieve funds after you pay a deposit may be extending the scam. Bitcoin.org warns that no legitimate firm offers guaranteed cryptocurrency recovery.
- Document the incident without copying secrets. Save the sender’s public username, domain, transaction hash, and timestamps if needed for a report, but do not store or share the phrase while collecting evidence.
- Report and block the impersonator. Use the platform’s reporting tools and the wallet or exchange’s verified abuse channel. Reporting does not recover funds, so complete the security steps first.
Should you move crypto when the market drops?
A price drop by itself is not a reason to disclose a phrase, connect to an unfamiliar site, or approve a rushed transfer. Decide whether to move assets based on a specific security need, not on an unsolicited warning or countdown.
- Move only with a defined destination. Confirm the wallet or exchange account you intend to use, the network, the full receiving address, and the transaction details on a trusted device.
- Use the wallet’s normal send flow. Do not use a special “panic transfer,” “rescue wallet,” or “verification transaction” supplied by a stranger.
- Expect irreversibility. After broadcasting a transaction, the destination and amount generally cannot be changed. A market emergency does not create a reversal mechanism.
- Keep the phrase out of the decision. No legitimate transfer requires typing the recovery words into a website or telling another person.
If you are considering moving funds because you suspect the wallet itself is compromised, follow the incident-response section below and the wallet maker’s chain-specific instructions. Do not improvise a universal sequence for every network or wallet.

Storage choices compared
| Storage approach | Online exposure | Physical resilience | Main failure mode | What to secure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper kept privately offline | Low if it never enters a connected device | Vulnerable to fire, water, tearing, and fading | Damage, loss, or unauthorized reading | The paper, its location, and access to the room or container |
| Purpose-built metal backup | Low if created and stored offline | Designed as an optional durable alternative; no specific product was tested | Theft, discovery, incorrect recording, or loss of the storage object | The metal backup and the place where it is kept |
| Screenshot, photo, cloud note, email, or messaging app | High; exposed to accounts, malware, syncing, and accidental forwarding | Device or service loss can remove access | Account takeover, malware, or unintended disclosure | Every device, account, backup, and service that may contain the file |
| Multiple physical locations | Low when all copies remain offline | Can reduce the risk of one disaster destroying every copy | More copies mean more opportunities for discovery or theft | Each copy, location, and person who knows about it |
The comparison has no universal winner. A single offline copy minimizes the number of objects to protect but leaves one physical point of failure. Multiple secure locations improve resilience to a localized disaster while increasing the security work. Digital convenience copies create a different class of exposure and should not be used as a backup.

What a hardware wallet does—and does not do
A hardware wallet is designed to keep private keys isolated from an internet-connected computer or phone during ordinary signing. That can reduce exposure compared with a software wallet, provided the device is initialized and used according to its official instructions.
It does not make disclosure safe. If you type the recovery phrase into a website, import it into a compromised software wallet, photograph it, or tell a supposed support agent, the hardware device cannot undo that exposure. Ledger Academy specifically warns about the risks of importing a hardware-wallet phrase into software. Treat the phrase as compromised if it has been entered into an untrusted environment.
When evaluating a hardware wallet category, compare the security design, supported assets and networks, setup and recovery documentation, update process, and availability of official support. Do not assume that a particular device protects every chain or application you use. No specific model or independent product test is established here.
Self-custody and exchange accounts require different recovery steps
| Question | Self-custody wallet | Centralized exchange account |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | The holder of the private keys and recovery phrase | The exchange’s account and authentication systems |
| Can ordinary support reset a lost phrase? | Generally no; Ethereum.org says an outside service cannot restore a self-custody wallet when the phrase and keys are lost | Use the exchange’s official account-recovery route |
| Should you give support the seed phrase? | Never | There is no reason to provide a self-custody phrase; follow the platform’s stated identity checks instead |
| Where should help be obtained? | The wallet maker’s independently verified documentation and support channel | The exchange’s independently verified website or application support channel |
A person who contacts you claiming to recover a self-custody wallet is not made trustworthy by knowing your transaction history or public address. Keep the phrase private even when the account is held on an exchange; an exchange support process should not ask for a self-custody seed phrase.

If you entered or disclosed the phrase
Entering the phrase into a website, sending it in a message, showing it on a screen-share, or giving it to another person should be treated as a potential compromise. Do not continue the conversation or provide additional identity, payment, or wallet information to the contact.
If you still have access and can work safely from a trusted device, consult the wallet’s official incident guidance. In many wallet-specific procedures, the owner creates a new wallet with a newly generated phrase and transfers remaining assets to it. The exact order depends on the chains, accounts, token approvals, transaction fees, and applications involved, so do not follow a one-size-fits-all script. Verify the new wallet’s backup before moving anything and review each destination address carefully.
After a suspected compromise, do not reuse the exposed phrase for a new wallet, even if no unauthorized transaction is visible. Monitor the affected accounts and revoke or otherwise address malicious approvals only through documented tools and instructions for the relevant network. If you cannot establish that a device or application is trustworthy, stop and obtain guidance through the wallet maker’s official channel without disclosing the phrase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the phrase is lost but not known to anyone else
Do not invent missing words, guess their order, or upload partial words to a recovery website. A self-custody wallet may be inaccessible if the phrase and private keys are both gone, and an outside service cannot manufacture a replacement. The correct response is to check whether the wallet is still unlocked on a device you control and to consult its official documentation for supported backup or export options. Never send the phrase to someone who promises to test or repair it.
Common panic scams and the warning signs
Fake support alerts
The message claims suspicious activity, a frozen withdrawal, or an expiring security check and directs you to a chat account or login page. The urgency is the attack. Close it, then open the service through a verified route you already trust.

Phishing pages and sponsored results
A lookalike site may appear in a search advertisement or use a familiar logo and support language. Its goal may be to collect the phrase, password, or a wallet signature. Inspect the domain and use a known official bookmark rather than the ad or result.
Fake airdrops and emergency rewards
A token or giveaway can require a wallet connection or an approval that grants an application spending authority. Free assets are not a reason to bypass transaction review. Reject anything you cannot explain.
Recovery-service promises
An operator may ask for the phrase, an upfront fee, or a second payment to release supposedly recovered funds. Guaranteed recovery is not a legitimate promise. Stop contact and do not send more money or secrets.
A practical incident decision table
| What happened | Immediate response | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| An unsolicited message asks for your phrase | Close it, verify support independently, and report the impersonator | Do not reply with the phrase or click its link |
| You clicked a link but did not enter secrets or sign | Close the page, avoid further interaction, and review the wallet’s official phishing guidance | Do not reconnect the wallet just to “check” the stranger’s site |
| You signed an unfamiliar approval or transaction | Use the relevant wallet and network’s official incident instructions from a trusted device | Do not assume a later message can reverse it |
| You entered the phrase on a site or shared it | Treat the wallet as compromised and follow the wallet-specific migration guidance for a newly generated wallet | Do not reuse the phrase or disclose it to a rescuer |
| You lost the phrase and keys | Check the wallet’s official documentation for any remaining authorized access or backups | Do not pay a stranger who guarantees restoration |
| Your assets are in an exchange account | Use the exchange’s independently verified account-recovery channel | Do not provide a self-custody seed phrase to exchange support |
Keep the emergency rules simple
- Pause whenever a message creates urgency.
- Keep the recovery phrase physically offline and private.
- Use only independently verified official support and documentation.
- Read the complete address and transaction request before signing.
- Assume a disclosed phrase is compromised and follow wallet-specific migration guidance.
- Remember that self-custody recovery and exchange account recovery are different systems.
Ethereum.org, Bitcoin.org, and wallet-provider security guidance all converge on the same practical rule: no market event justifies handing over the master secret. Preparation reduces the chance that fear, urgency, or an impersonator will make the decision for you.
