How to Protect Your Bank Accounts After a Financial Institution Reports a Cyberattack

If your bank or another financial institution reports a cyberattack, verify the notice through the institution’s official app or website, or call a number you already trust. Ask what information and accounts may be affected, then secure the relevant access, check transactions, and report anything suspicious promptly. This guidance is for U.S. consumers; the incident notice—not the announcement alone—determines what may have been exposed.

Verify the notice and find out what was affected

Do not follow an unexpected email or text link, or call a number supplied in an unsolicited message, until you have independently verified it. Scammers may impersonate financial institutions or government agencies. Open the institution’s app, type its known website address yourself, or call the number printed on your card or statement. The CFPB offers guidance on recognizing and responding to impersonation attempts: CFPB fraud guidance.

Ask the institution’s fraud or security team:

  • Whether the notice is genuine and whether your information was involved.
  • Which types of information may have been exposed, such as sign-in credentials, a card number, a bank account number, or identity information.
  • Which accounts or cards may be affected, what steps the institution has already taken, and what it recommends you do.
  • Whether any card or account should be locked, replaced, or changed, and whether the institution offers help related to the incident.

A public announcement does not establish that your specific account, password, balance, or Social Security number was exposed. Follow the verified notice and the institution’s case-specific advice.

Match your response to the information involved

The next steps depend on what the institution says may have been exposed. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov provides breach guidance tailored to the type of information involved.

#1 Best Overall

  • How to Refill the Ink: there are 4 pieces of ID stamp refills, each is about 1.5 ml, you just need to unscrew the cap of the ink bottle (not disposable, you can close the cap for next time of use), then insert it into the hole on the side of the stamp, then turn it upside down, about 5 minutes later, the most of the ink will be replenished to the security roller stamp
Information possibly exposed What to do
Sign-in password or other credential Change it through the institution’s official app or website. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Use security features available in the institution’s official account settings, or ask the institution how to enable them.
Debit or credit card number Contact the issuer and ask whether to lock, cancel, or replace the card. The issuer can advise whether a PIN change is appropriate. Check transactions while you wait for instructions.
Bank account number Contact the bank and ask what monitoring or account changes it recommends. Do not close or replace an account automatically; the right response depends on the incident and may affect deposits or scheduled payments.
Social Security number or other identity information Use the FTC’s breach guidance to identify relevant identity-theft and credit-file steps. If you see signs of misuse, report it through IdentityTheft.gov and follow its recovery plan.

Check transactions and report anything suspicious

Review checking and savings accounts, debit cards, and credit cards for unfamiliar activity, including small transactions. Contact the relevant bank or card provider promptly if anything looks wrong. Ask whether a potentially compromised card should be canceled and replaced; the CFPB recommends replacing a compromised card before more transactions can occur and says changing its PIN may also be worth considering. See the CFPB’s account and card fraud guidance.

Keep checking after the initial notice. The CFPB’s 2014 consumer advisory cautions: “Fraudulent charges may occur many months after information is stolen.” Its later guidance also supports continued monitoring. For disputed transactions, reporting deadlines and liability rules depend on the account and transaction type and on when you report the problem. Contact your institution quickly and consult the CFPB’s bank account guidance; do not assume one deadline or reimbursement rule applies to both debit and credit transactions.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail | Pre-inked, 1,000 impressions per roller, covers 3 lines per pass, works on paper, envelopes, prescription labels, twist cap
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

Use credit-file protections if identity information may be at risk

A credit freeze and a fraud alert address potential new-credit identity theft; neither prevents unauthorized withdrawals from an existing bank account. Contact the bank separately about deposit-account access and transactions.

Protection What it does What you must do
Credit freeze Restricts access to your credit file for most new-credit decisions. It is free, but you must request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Details are available from the CFPB’s credit freeze guidance.
Fraud alert Asks creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before opening or changing credit accounts; it does not fully block access to your credit report. It is not a substitute for reporting suspected bank or card fraud. See the CFPB’s fraud alert guidance.

If identity theft has occurred, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan. The FTC also explains steps to take after a data breach in its data breach guidance.

Keep a record of your response

Write down when you contacted the institution, whom you spoke with, any case number, and what the institution said it would do. Keep copies of notices, letters, and paperwork related to disputed transactions. If the institution offers credit monitoring, identity monitoring, or recovery assistance, check the notice for who qualifies, how to enroll, and how long the offer lasts. Monitoring can help you spot certain issues, but it does not itself stop fraud.
