Never let a stranger, online romantic contact, or supposed employer use your personal bank account to receive and forward money. That arrangement can make you a money mule—someone who moves fraud proceeds for another person—even if you were told the money was legitimate. Refuse the request, stop contact, and call your bank through a trusted number if any money or account information has already changed hands.
This U.S.-focused guide explains how money-mule scams work, how to recognize recruitment through jobs, relationships and impersonation calls, and what to do after you receive funds, send funds, or expose account details.

What is a money mule?
A money mule receives, transfers or otherwise moves money obtained through fraud for someone else. The mule may be a willing participant, but may also be unaware that the funds are stolen. Criminals recruit people to make the transaction trail point to an ordinary bank customer rather than to the person who committed the underlying fraud.

The proposed reason might be payroll processing, an “assistant” job, a business opportunity, a romantic emergency or a bank-security procedure. The story does not make the funds safe. Keeping a commission or a portion of the transfer does not make the arrangement legitimate.

The FBI warns that money-mule activity can lead to prosecution even when a person says they did not know the money was stolen. Possible consequences include personal liability for losses, identity theft, damage to credit and difficulty maintaining or opening bank accounts. These are risks, not automatic results; the facts, applicable law and jurisdiction determine what happens in an individual case.
How money-mule recruitment works
Fake or misleading job offers
Recruiters may advertise easy remote work, package reshipping, payment processing or “financial agent” positions. The role involves opening a personal or company account, receiving payments and sending them onward by wire, ACH, mail, cryptocurrency or a money-service business. You may be told to keep part of each transaction.
The FBI’s rule is direct: A legitimate company will not ask you to do this.
Verify any employer independently, using a website or telephone number you found yourself rather than contact information supplied by the recruiter.
Online romance and social-media contacts
A person you have never met in person may ask you to receive or forward money, open an account, or send funds back after a deposit arrives. Romance, employment, non-delivery, lottery and other internet-enabled scams are documented recruitment routes. A convincing profile, long conversation or apparent generosity does not establish that the money is lawful.
Do not send money to an online romantic interest, even if that person sends money to you first. A first payment can be bait for a request to move a larger amount, or it can come from a stolen account or fraudulent check.

Impersonation calls about “protecting” your account
Another pattern starts with a call claiming that your bank account has been compromised. The caller says you must move funds to a “safe” account or provide a verification code. The Federal Trade Commission states: Someone who says you have to move your money to protect it is a scammer.
A real bank will not require you to transfer money to protect it. Hang up and call the institution using the number on a statement, on the physical card or in an official app—not a number read to you by the caller.
Warning signs that an offer could make you a money mule
No single sign proves a crime, but several of these demands together should end the conversation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- An unsolicited offer promises unusually easy money for little work.
- You must use your personal account to receive or transfer “company” funds.
- You are told to open a new bank, cryptocurrency or payment account at someone else’s direction.
- The instructions specify wire transfers, ACH payments, money-service businesses, gift cards, cryptocurrency or mailed cash.
- You are allowed to keep a percentage of each payment for acting as an intermediary.
- The contact insists on secrecy, urgency or isolation from your bank, family or a legitimate employer.
- An online contact whom you have not met asks you to receive, forward or return money.
- You are sent a check or electronic deposit and told to send money onward before the deposit is fully verified.
- A caller demands a one-time passcode, password or other verification code.
- The person supplies all contact details and discourages you from verifying the organization independently.
A deposited check can appear to clear before the bank determines that it is fraudulent. If you send money after the apparent deposit, you may have to repay the bank for the entire amount, including what you forwarded, and could incur fees or end up with an overdrawn or closed account.
How to prevent yourself from becoming a money mule
Refuse personal-account payment routing
Decline any job or side business that asks you to receive and transfer company money through your own account. Do not let another person direct you to open an account for that purpose, and do not use an existing account to route funds for someone you do not know and trust.
Keep strangers out of your banking and payment activity
Do not receive or send money or packages for people you do not know or have not met in person. Do not share your account number, online-banking credentials, debit-card details, Social Security number or security answers with an untrusted person. Never share a verification code that arrives by text, email or an authenticator app; a code can authorize access or a transaction.

Verify employers and organizations independently
- Pause before accepting any role that involves moving money, opening accounts or reshipping packages.
- Find the employer’s official contact information yourself through a source you trust.
- Call or write through that independently obtained channel and ask whether the position and payment process are real.
- Do not rely on a recruiter’s email address, phone number, links or documents as proof of legitimacy.
- If the organization cannot explain why a normal employee would use a personal account, walk away.
Handle suspicious bank calls safely
- End the call without moving money or providing a code.
- Wait a moment and contact your bank through the number on a statement, the back of your card or an official app.
- Tell the bank that an impersonator instructed you to transfer money or disclose a code.
- Review recent and pending activity with the legitimate institution.
What to do if money was deposited into your account
- Stop. Do not withdraw, spend, return or forward the funds at the requester’s direction.
- Stop communicating with the requester. Do not negotiate a different fee or ask for new instructions; continued contact can expose you to further manipulation.
- Call your financial institution promptly. Use a trusted number and explain how the funds arrived, what the sender told you and whether any portion moved.
- Ask about pending transactions and account protections. The bank can tell you what it needs from you and whether it recommends restrictions or a new account.
- Preserve evidence. Keep messages, emails, phone numbers, payment references, deposit notices and shipping records. Do not alter screenshots or delete communications.
Do not assume that a deposit is final because the balance increased or the check appeared to clear. Do not promise yourself or the requester that the bank can reverse a payment; recall options depend on the payment type, timing and institution.

What to do if you already sent or forwarded money
- Stop every further transfer and end contact with the person who directed it.
- Call the bank, card issuer, payment service or money-transfer company involved through a trusted channel. State the amount, date, destination and method, and ask what urgent cancellation or fraud-review steps are available.
- Ask the institution to review pending payments and secure the account. A payment may not be recoverable, so act immediately without assuming a reversal.
- Change exposed online-banking passwords from a device you trust, and do not reuse a password used elsewhere.
- Follow the institution’s instructions about replacing cards, changing account numbers or opening a new account.
- Save confirmation numbers and the names or departments of people you speak with.
Closing or changing an account can reduce continuing access, but it does not erase a prior transaction or liability. Work with the financial institution to understand what remains outstanding.
What to do if a scammer has your account information
If the scammer has your bank-account information, the FTC advises closing the account immediately. Contact the bank first through a trusted number, explain exactly what was exposed and ask whether it recommends a new account, additional monitoring, payment blocks or other controls. Replace compromised debit cards and credentials as directed.
If only a name or ordinary public contact detail was disclosed, tell the bank what happened anyway and watch for follow-up attempts. If an online-banking password, security answer or verification code was disclosed, treat the account as actively at risk and follow the institution’s urgent account-takeover procedure.
What to do after a caller said your account was compromised
If you moved money because of an impersonation call, contact the real institution immediately using trusted contact information. Explain that the transfer was made after a fraudulent “protect your funds” instruction. Ask whether any payment is still pending and what account-security steps are required.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where to report suspected money-mule activity
Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it creates a record and can help investigators connect related cases.
- Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov): Report suspected internet-enabled money-mule recruitment and include the payment trail, messages, account details and identifiers you retained.
- Federal Trade Commission: Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov for scam and impersonation reports, especially after a fraudulent bank call or fake-check scheme.
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: The CFPB lists the FTC, FBI, your state attorney general and local police as possible contacts for scam victims.
- Local law enforcement: Contact your police department when appropriate, particularly if you face threats, identity theft or an immediate safety concern.
When reporting, distinguish what you know from what you suspect. Include dates, amounts, payment methods, names used, phone numbers, email addresses, wallet or account identifiers, shipping information and copies of communications. Do not send additional money to “help” an investigation.
Financial and legal consequences to understand
Repayment and account losses
If a check or transfer is fraudulent, the bank can remove the credit after the apparent deposit. You may owe the full amount, including money already sent onward, and may face overdraft fees or an account closure. The fact that you acted on someone else’s instructions does not guarantee that the bank or a victim can absorb the loss.
Credit and banking access
Money-mule activity can produce negative credit effects, identity-theft problems and difficulty opening or keeping bank accounts. These outcomes are possible rather than certain and depend on the transactions, account agreements and investigative findings.
Best Value
Criminal exposure
Moving fraud proceeds can trigger criminal investigation or prosecution even when the person involved claims not to have known the source. Intent, knowledge and other facts matter under the applicable law. If law enforcement or a bank contacts you, provide truthful information and consider obtaining advice from a qualified attorney; do not destroy records or continue moving funds.
A quick decision guide

| A caller said you had to move money to protect it | Do not transfer funds or disclose a code | Hang up and call the real institution using a statement, card or official-app number |
Questions people ask about money-mule scams
Can I keep a small percentage if the sender says the job is legal?
No. A commission does not legitimize routing another person’s funds through your account. Refuse the arrangement and verify any employer independently.
What if the sender says the money is a refund or salary?
Treat the request as suspicious until the organization confirms it through contact information you found yourself. Do not forward or spend funds while the bank investigates.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will closing my account remove my responsibility?
No. Closing an account can limit further access, but it does not erase transactions, repayment obligations or an investigation. Ask the bank what remains to be resolved.
Should I warn the person who recruited me that I am reporting them?
No. Stop communicating and preserve the evidence instead. Further contact can expose you to additional pressure or requests.
Is every unexpected deposit proof that I am a money mule?
No. An unexpected deposit can have many explanations. Do not treat one sign as proof of a crime; promptly tell your financial institution and let it determine the appropriate review.
