1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAI can make a fake bank message sound polished or a scam caller sound like someone you trust. It does not make an unexpected contact genuine. Never share a password or one-time code, click a surprise banking link, or move money to a supposed “safe” account. End the contact and reach your bank through a number or website you already trust.
Why AI scams can fool people—and what it does not change
Criminals can use AI-generated text, voice clips, or video to impersonate people and financial institutions. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has warned that AI-generated audio has been used to impersonate individuals and obtain access to bank accounts. A familiar voice, professional-looking message, or caller ID that appears to name your bank is not proof of identity.

The basic fraud often follows a familiar pattern: an attacker poses as bank staff or support, sends a link to a lookalike login page, or uses stolen or reused credentials. If you enter your login details and a one-time code on a fake page, the attacker may use them to enter the real account, change its credentials, or move funds. Malware and credentials exposed in data breaches can also enable account takeover. [IC3 account takeover guidance]
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds protection when you use the bank’s genuine site or app, but it cannot make a phishing page safe. Never provide an unsolicited caller or message with a one-time code, even if the person says it is needed to stop fraud.

IC3 reported more than 5,100 complaints and losses exceeding $262 million since January 2025 in its November 25, 2025 alert about account takeover fraud involving impersonation of financial institution support. Those are complaints received and losses reported for the stated period, not a count of all incidents, and the alert does not say every case involved AI. [IC3’s November 2025 alert]
How to verify a message or call claiming to be from your bank
If you receive an unexpected email or text
Do not click its link, reply with account details, or use a phone number in the message. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns consumers about emails and texts asking them to verify account information and advises contacting the financial institution independently. Use the phone number on a recent statement or official material you obtained separately, or open your saved bank bookmark or app. [CFPB guidance on unexpected bank messages]

If someone calls about suspicious activity
Hang up if the caller asks for a password or code, or tells you to move money to protect it. Call the bank yourself using the number on your statement or another independently verified source. Do not trust caller ID alone: numbers can be spoofed. The FTC specifically warns that a call about fraud on your account may itself come from a scammer. [FTC guidance on bank-fraud calls]
If a relative or friend seems to be in an emergency
Verify through a separate call to a number you already know, or check with another trusted person. A cloned or familiar-sounding voice is not enough to authenticate an urgent request. For family emergencies, agree on a private passphrase in advance. Avoid sharing unnecessary personal photos, videos, or voice recordings publicly when possible, since material online may help someone create a convincing impersonation. Harden your bank account
- Use a unique password. Make it difficult to guess and do not reuse it on other sites. If one service is breached, a unique bank password prevents that exposed password from opening your bank account.
- Enable the bank’s MFA. Turn on the options your bank offers and do not disable them. Check the institution’s official instructions for setup and recovery, since methods and availability vary by bank.
- Go directly to the bank. Save the official login page as a bookmark or favorite, use the bank’s app, and check the web address before entering credentials. Avoid search ads and links in unexpected messages; a convincing result or page can still be fraudulent.
- Review transactions and deposits. Check activity regularly so unauthorized transactions or missing deposits are easier to spot and report promptly.
- Limit clues to security answers. Avoid posting personal details publicly if they could help someone guess answers or impersonate you.
These are general US consumer safeguards, not a guarantee against fraud. Banks differ in their login, MFA, transaction-verification, and recovery procedures; consult your institution’s official information for the controls it supports. [IC3 account security advice]

What to do if you shared information or money
- Call your bank or credit union immediately. Use a number obtained independently, explain what you shared or authorized, and ask what account protections it can apply. If you sent a transfer, ask the institution to attempt a recall or reversal; acting quickly may matter.
- Change exposed credentials. Reset the bank password and any other password that was reused. Follow the bank’s recovery process if you can no longer sign in, and reset other credentials that may have been compromised.
- Review activity and report unauthorized transactions promptly. Tell the bank about suspicious transfers, charges, or missing deposits. The FTC also advises reporting the incident to the relevant financial institution. [FTC steps after a scam]
- Report the fraud. File a detailed complaint with the FBI’s IC3 for account takeover or fraudulent wire activity, including relevant financial and contact details. Report the scam to the FTC as applicable. [FBI IC3] [FTC ReportFraud]
- Preserve evidence and alert the impersonated company. Keep messages, website addresses, payment records, and contact details. If a company’s name or site was used, notify it through an independently verified channel.
