How to Protect Your Accounts From Phishing and Stolen Passwords

The most effective defense is layered: use a different, long password for every account; store those passwords in a reputable password manager; turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), starting with your primary email; and treat unexpected links, attachments, urgent requests, and verification-code requests as suspicious. Prefer a passkey or FIDO2 security key when a service supports one, use an authenticator app when it does not, and use SMS or email codes rather than no second factor at all.

If you think a password was exposed, change it immediately at the real service—not through the message that alerted you—and replace every reused copy. The steps below explain how phishing works, how to harden accounts, and what to do after a mistake.

What phishing and stolen-password attacks are trying to do

Phishing is a social-engineering attack that impersonates a trusted organization or person to make you reveal a password, payment detail, identity number, or login code. It can arrive by email or text, and the message may direct you to a look-alike sign-in page, ask you to open an attachment, or pressure you to act before you have time to verify it.

Attackers also buy or obtain credentials from data breaches and try them on other services. This is called credential stuffing. Password reuse makes one exposed login a master key for several accounts; unique passwords contain the damage to the original service. A low-value shopping or forum account can still matter if it shares a password with your email, bank, cloud storage, or tax account.

Signals that deserve a pause

  • An unexpected message about a locked account, failed payment, refund, delivery, invoice, tax issue, or security alert.
  • Urgency, threats, secrecy, or a demand that you “verify” information immediately.
  • A link whose domain is misspelled, unusually long, shortened, or different from the organization you expect.
  • An attachment you were not expecting, especially an office document that asks you to enable macros or content.
  • A request for a one-time password, MFA approval, recovery code, or security-key confirmation from someone who contacted you first.
  • A request to move the conversation to a new number, private chat, or remote-support session so that normal verification is bypassed.

Familiar branding, a real logo, or a message that uses your name does not prove authenticity. Attackers can copy all three and may know details from public profiles or earlier breaches.

Verify without using the message

If a message might be legitimate, do not click its link, reply to it, or call the number in it. Open the organization’s website using a bookmark or an address you already know, or call a number printed on a statement or official card. Sign in there to check for the alert. This habit defeats many look-alike pages and fake support conversations.

Build a password system that limits damage

Give every account a unique password

Never use the same password for your primary email and a lower-value site. Email is especially important because it can receive password-reset links for many other accounts. Make every password unique, including accounts you consider unimportant; attackers routinely use those accounts as stepping stones. If you discover one exposed password, search your password manager for duplicates and replace all of them, not just the password on the breached service.

Use length rather than complicated rules

NIST’s current guidance says length is the most important password property and recommends at least 15 characters when a person must create a password manually. A memorable passphrase made from several unrelated words can be easier to type and remember than a short string packed with substitutions. NIST no longer recommends mandatory composition rules—such as requiring a symbol, a number, and an uppercase letter—as a substitute for length. A website may still impose its own rules, so follow the service’s requirements while choosing the longest practical password.

NIST gives an illustrative example that an eight-character password would take about 200 billion guesses under the conditions described on its password page. That is a computational example, not a promise about how long every password will resist a real attack. Password length, uniqueness, and whether the password has already appeared in a breach all matter.

Do not turn a base phrase into predictable variations such as Summer2026!, Summer2027!, and Summer2028!. If one variation is exposed, an attacker can guess the pattern.

Let a password manager generate and store passwords

A password manager can create a different, long, random password for each account and fill it only on the matching website. Protect the manager itself with a long master passphrase and MFA if the service offers it. The vault is a high-value target, so keep its recovery method safe and understand how to regain access if you lose your primary device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose a master passphrase you can remember but have never used anywhere else.
  • Turn on MFA for the manager and save its recovery codes offline in a secure place.
  • Use the manager’s generator for new accounts and when replacing reused passwords.
  • Review saved entries for duplicate or old passwords and change them in priority order.
  • Do not store the manager’s master password in a note, browser field, or email that an attacker could access with the same credentials.

Before relying on a manager, check how it handles account recovery, device loss, synchronization, export, and emergency access. The specific features and tradeoffs differ among providers. A secure setup is one you can recover without weakening the master login or leaving the only recovery information inside the locked vault.

Turn on MFA in the right order

MFA adds another proof of identity after the password. The Federal Trade Commission explains that it makes it harder for a scammer to log in even when the username and password have been obtained. Enable it first on your primary email, then on financial services, payment apps, online stores, social networks, cloud storage, tax services, and your password manager.

Which second factor should you choose?

Method Phishing resistance Main exposure Practical guidance
Passkey High when implemented with a modern FIDO/WebAuthn system; authentication is bound to the legitimate service Device loss or account-recovery failure if no backup is prepared Prefer when the service supports it. The passkey stays on an approved device and is unlocked with a PIN or biometrics.
FIDO2/WebAuthn security key High; the key verifies the genuine site before releasing a credential The physical key can be lost, damaged, or incompatible with a connector, browser, or operating system Use where supported. Register a suitable backup key or another recovery method and check the account’s recovery process.
Authenticator app Better than SMS for many attacks, but manually entered codes are not classified by NIST as phishing-resistant A code can still be entered into an impostor page; the phone or app may be lost Use when passkeys or security keys are unavailable. Store backup codes safely and plan device recovery.
SMS or email code Low; codes may be intercepted or socially engineered SMS can be diverted through a SIM-swap attack; email codes depend on the security of the email account Use if it is the only option. It is generally better than having no second factor. Never share an unexpected code with a caller or texter.

NIST defines phishing resistance as an authentication protocol’s ability to prevent an impostor verifier from obtaining authentication secrets or valid authenticator outputs. A passkey or security key can provide that property because it is cryptographically tied to the legitimate service; a code that you read and type can be relayed to a fake site.

“Phishing-resistant” does not mean a device can never be lost or an account can never be recovered improperly. It means the authentication exchange is designed not to hand a secret to an impostor website. You still need a sensible recovery plan and should review every backup method attached to the account.

How to enable MFA without locking yourself out

  1. Sign in by typing the service’s known address or opening its official app.
  2. Open Security, Login and security, or a similarly named account-settings area.
  3. Select Multifactor authentication, Two-step verification, or Passkeys.
  4. Choose a passkey or security key first when offered. Otherwise select an authenticator app, then SMS or email only when stronger options are unavailable.
  5. Complete a test sign-in in a private window or on another device before ending the setup session.
  6. Download or write down recovery codes and keep them offline. Do not store the only copy inside the account you are protecting.
  7. For a physical key, register a second key or confirm an alternate recovery method before removing the first factor.

Check which devices, browsers, connectors, and operating systems the service supports before buying or registering a FIDO2 security key. Keep a backup key or an account-approved recovery method in a separate secure location, and test recovery before an emergency.

Protect the accounts that can unlock everything else

Primary email

Your main email account is the highest-priority target because it can reset other accounts. Use a unique password, the strongest available MFA, current recovery details, and notifications for new sign-ins or recovery changes. Review forwarding rules, filters, connected apps, and active sessions for anything you did not create. An attacker who adds a forwarding rule may continue receiving reset messages even after you change the password.

Financial, payment, and tax accounts

Enable every security control the provider offers, including transaction alerts and login notifications. Never approve a payment or disclose a code solely because a message claims to be from a bank, card issuer, payment app, or tax authority. Navigate to the provider independently and contact it through a known channel. Ask the provider what to do if a password, card detail, or identity number was disclosed, and follow its fraud or account-lock procedure.

Social, shopping, and cloud accounts

These accounts may contain private messages, stored payment methods, personal files, or contacts that attackers can exploit in follow-up scams. Remove old third-party app access, sign out unknown sessions, and use a unique password and MFA on each service. Watch for messages sent from your account that you did not write; they can be used to phish your contacts.

What to do after clicking a link or sharing information

If you only clicked

Close the page and do not enter credentials, payment information, or codes. If the message could be genuine, verify through the organization’s known website or phone number. A click alone does not prove that an account was taken over, but an attachment may have installed software, so continue with the device checks below.

If you entered a password

  1. Open the real service directly—never through the suspicious message—and change the password immediately.
  2. Change every other account where that password was reused. Give each account a new, manager-generated password.
  3. Sign out other sessions and remove unfamiliar devices or connected applications.
  4. Enable MFA, favoring a passkey or security key, then an authenticator app.
  5. Check account activity for changed recovery addresses, forwarding rules, messages, purchases, or transfers.

If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery page, not a phone number or link supplied by the suspicious message. Tell the provider that the credentials may have been stolen and ask whether it can revoke sessions, reset recovery details, or place a fraud hold.

If you disclosed a verification code

Assume the attacker may have been attempting a live login. Change the password through the genuine service, revoke unknown sessions, and replace the MFA method if the account allows it. Do not approve another prompt or provide another code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. A caller who already knows your name, email address, or partial account details can still be an impostor.

If financial or identity information was exposed

Contact the bank, card issuer, payment provider, or other affected organization through a known channel. For exposed Social Security or other identity details in the United States, use the tailored response steps at IdentityTheft.gov. Watch statements and account alerts for unauthorized activity and follow the provider’s fraud process. Keep records of the time, account, messages, and actions you took so you can answer the provider’s questions accurately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an attachment installed software

Disconnect the device from sensitive sessions if practical, update its security software, and run a full scan. Install operating-system and browser updates, then change passwords from a device you trust. If the scan reports an infection or suspicious activity continues, seek qualified technical help before using the device for financial logins.

Report the attempt and help stop follow-up scams

In the United States, report phishing email to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM), and report the fraud attempt to the Federal Trade Commission. Reporting does not replace changing passwords or contacting a financial provider; it helps investigators identify campaigns. These reporting routes are U.S.-specific, so readers elsewhere should use their national cybercrime and consumer-protection agencies.

Keep accounts secure after the emergency

  • Review password-manager security and confirm its master passphrase is unique and protected by MFA.
  • Check account activity, recovery methods, active sessions, forwarding rules, and third-party access at least periodically and after every security alert.
  • Install operating-system, browser, and security-software updates promptly.
  • Keep recovery codes and backup security keys in separate, secure locations.
  • Teach household members that no legitimate support agent should need an unexpected one-time code or password.
  • Use bookmarks or manually typed addresses for frequently used financial and email services instead of following login links in messages.
  • When changing a password after an incident, start with email and accounts that can move money or reset other logins, then work through the rest of the password-manager audit.

A practical priority plan

First 15 minutes

  1. Secure your primary email with a unique password and the strongest available MFA.
  2. Change any password you may have typed into a suspicious page.
  3. Change reused copies of that password on financial, payment, social, shopping, and tax accounts.

First day

  1. Install or configure a password manager and generate unique passwords for high-value accounts.
  2. Enable passkeys, security keys, or authenticator-app MFA wherever supported.
  3. Save recovery codes offline and review active sessions and connected apps.
  4. Contact affected financial providers and begin the IdentityTheft.gov response process if identity information was exposed.

Ongoing

  1. Verify unexpected requests independently, even when they appear to come from a familiar company or contact.
  2. Replace old, reused, or exposed passwords as soon as you discover them.
  3. Review account alerts and recovery settings, and keep devices and browsers updated.
  4. Practice signing in with a backup key or recovery method before you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are passkeys safer than authenticator-app codes?

When a service implements FIDO or WebAuthn correctly, passkeys are designed to resist phishing because they are cryptographically tied to the legitimate service. Authenticator-app codes are generally safer than SMS, but a person can still type a code into an impostor page, so NIST does not classify manually entered codes as phishing-resistant.

What should I do if I reused a password that was exposed?

Change the password at the genuine service immediately, then change every other account using that password. Use a password manager to generate a different password for each account, sign out unfamiliar sessions, review recovery settings, and enable the strongest available MFA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is SMS two-factor authentication worth using?

Yes, if it is the only second-factor option. SMS is generally better than no MFA, but codes can be intercepted or socially engineered, and phone numbers can be diverted through SIM-swap attacks. Prefer a passkey, security key, or authenticator app when available.

What if I lose my security key or phone?

Use the backup key or recovery method you set up before the loss. Keep recovery codes offline and separate from the device. Check each service’s supported recovery process; options vary, and removing the only factor without a tested backup can lock you out.

Should I change every password after receiving a phishing message?

Not automatically. If you did not enter information or open a harmful attachment, verify the message independently and monitor the account. If you entered a password, change it immediately and replace every reused copy. Prioritize email, financial, payment, tax, social, cloud, and password-manager accounts.

Where should people in the United States report phishing?

Report phishing email to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM), and report the attempt to the Federal Trade Commission. If financial or identity information was exposed, also contact the affected provider and use IdentityTheft.gov’s tailored steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use a unique, long password for every account, store it in a protected password manager, and enable MFA—preferably a passkey or security key—starting with your primary email. Verify messages through known channels, never share an unexpected code, and respond to any exposure immediately by changing reused passwords, revoking sessions, contacting affected providers, and scanning a device that may have received malicious software.
