Start with a clean, correctly sized sleeve. Add a compatible rigid holder when a card needs extra support, and store it away from light, moisture, heat, and pressure. For organized viewing, use a binder with well-fitting pockets; for a sealed promo, support the package flat without folding or compressing it.
Choose protection for the damage you want to prevent
A sleeve and a rigid holder do different jobs. A sleeve provides a soft barrier between the card and hands or nearby surfaces; a rigid holder adds support that can help limit bending during storage or transport. Hobby guidance describes toploaders as protection against bending and impact, but fit matters: a holder should accept the sleeved card without force. - For a card going into a binder: use a clean sleeve and a pocket that does not bind or squeeze it.
- For an individual card being handled or transported: sleeve it first, then use a suitably sized rigid holder.
- For display: keep exposure to light limited, even if the display material filters UV.
Do not push a raw card into a rough or tight holder, or force a sleeved card into one. Avoid pressure that could bend the card or damage its edges.

Store cards to reduce fading and environmental stress
Limit light exposure
Keep valuable cards out of direct sunlight and away from intense or prolonged light. The Library of Congress says light damage to paper-based materials is permanent, and filtering ultraviolet light does not remove the risk from visible light. Its guidance is general conservation advice, not testing specific to Pokémon cards. Library of Congress guidance on works on paper explains light and storage risks; its paper FAQ says permanent or long-term display of paper-based materials is not recommended because light damage is irreversible.

A closed box or binder reduces light exposure while stored. UV-filtering glazing can reduce ultraviolet exposure in a display, but it does not make continuous display harmless.
Keep the storage environment stable
Choose a stable indoor location away from damp areas, leaks, temperature extremes, and repeated environmental swings. The preservation recommendations available from the Library of Congress concern paper and photographs, not a validated temperature or humidity target for Pokémon cards; do not treat a specific humidity figure as a card-care standard. A room hygrometer may help if you already have a damp or unstable storage area. The Library’s photograph care leaflet and photograph storage guidance describe general preservation concerns.

Check enclosure materials, not just labels
Library of Congress guidance identifies uncoated polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene as suitable plastic enclosure materials for many photographic items, while warning that plastics may be unsuitable in uncontrolled high humidity. That is adjacent conservation guidance, not a product certification for trading-card sleeves. Look for clear material specifications rather than relying on “archival” or “acid-free” alone. For an ordinary loose promo
- Wash and dry your hands, then prepare a clean, correctly sized sleeve.
- Slide the card into the sleeve gently; stop if it catches or the sleeve is too tight.
- Store the sleeved card in a binder pocket or supported box, away from direct light and environmental extremes.
- If the card will be transported or needs individual support, place the sleeved card in a compatible rigid holder without forcing it.
For a sealed promo
If keeping the promo sealed matters, preserve its wrapper. Support the package flat in an enclosure sized for it; do not tightly fold excess packaging or compress it to make it fit. The public question “How do I properly store single sealed promo cards?” appears in an anecdotal discussion, not a formal preservation standard. The discussion is a useful example of the question, not proof of a tested method.

Avoid unverified cleaning methods
Do not use cloths, solvents, or household cleaners on a card surface based on general cleaning advice. The cited sources do not establish a safe Pokémon-card cleaning procedure. Preventing contact and storing the card carefully is the safer supported approach.

Pokémon Support states, “We are unable to replace cards that have been ruined or damaged by outside events.” Its page says it has a limited number of replacements for manufacturing, printing, and packaging issues. For manufacturing issues, the policy page says assistance is limited to products released within the last year and asks customers to contact support within 10 business days of purchase with requested evidence. Because support policies can change, check Pokémon Support’s current replacement guidance before relying on those conditions.
