How to Protect Pets During a Heat Wave

Protecting a pet in a heat wave comes down to preventing heat exposure before illness starts: keep the animal in a cool area, provide fresh water and shade, reduce exercise, avoid hot pavement, and never leave the pet alone in a parked vehicle. Watch for heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting, abnormal gum color, breathing trouble, or collapse. Those signs after heat exposure require an immediate call to a veterinarian or emergency clinic while you begin gentle cooling and arrange transport.

Heat-wave priorities: what to do first

On an exceptionally hot or humid day, make the safest option the easiest one for your pet. Keep the animal indoors in a comfortably cool room whenever possible, and postpone strenuous activity. If the pet must go outside, provide continuous access to shade and clean water, stay out only briefly, and return indoors before signs of distress appear. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) warm-weather guidance recommends limiting exposure and exertion, scheduling activity during cooler hours, and avoiding hot surfaces.

  • Move normal walks, runs, hikes, and play sessions to the coolest practical parts of the day.
  • Shorten or skip exercise during extreme heat or high humidity.
  • Keep more than one water source available if your pet spends time both indoors and outdoors.
  • Offer a shaded, cool resting place; shade alone may not be enough during severe heat.
  • Keep pets at home for errands whenever practical. Never leave one unattended in a parked vehicle.

There is no single outdoor temperature that is safe for every animal. Humidity, direct sun, airflow, coat, body condition, age, breed, health, acclimation, and the intensity of activity all change the risk. Treat a heat advisory or an unusually hot, humid day as a reason to reduce exposure rather than as a challenge to complete a normal routine.

Why heat waves are dangerous for pets

Heatstroke occurs when a pet cannot regulate its body temperature adequately. Cornell describes a dog temperature of 105°F or higher as heatstroke in its overview, while a dog-specific UC Davis article uses a threshold above 105.8°F. These figures describe clinical conditions; they are not a target for home monitoring. A pet showing concerning signs after heat exposure needs veterinary advice even if you have not measured its temperature.

Severe heatstroke can damage multiple organs and may require intensive veterinary treatment. Early recognition and treatment improve the chance of survival, but a pet that recovers can remain at increased risk in the future, according to Cornell’s canine heatstroke information.

Pets that need extra protection

Risk is higher for short-nosed or flat-faced breeds, older animals, overweight pets, thick-coated dogs, and pets with heart, lung, respiratory, or other breathing problems. Cornell and the ASPCA recommend extra caution for these groups. Ask your veterinarian about your individual pet’s risk, exercise limits, coat-care needs, and any medication or disease that could affect heat tolerance.

Set up a cool, safe home environment

Keep water available

Provide fresh, clean drinking water indoors and outdoors, and check it frequently during the day. Outdoor bowls can become hot, dirty, or empty, so refill them rather than assuming they remain usable. For walks and outings, UC Davis advises carrying water and a bowl. A portable bowl is convenient, but an ordinary bowl works; neither is a treatment for heat illness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provide shade and a cool resting place

Give the pet access to a cool indoor area whenever possible. If it must be outside, combine shade with airflow and water, and check that the shaded area remains shaded as the sun moves. Do not assume a small shelter or a shaded vehicle is safe during a heat wave. Bring the pet indoors if the area becomes warm, stagnant, or exposed to direct sun.

Use cooling equipment as support, not protection from overexertion

Fans, damp towels, and cooling accessories can support comfort, but they do not make prolonged exercise or outdoor confinement safe. A pet that continues running, playing, or panting heavily needs rest in a cool environment, not more equipment. If illness signs appear, follow the emergency steps below and contact a veterinarian.

Consider the whole household routine

Plan feeding, medication, grooming, toileting, and play around the hottest part of the day. Keep doors and gates secure when moving a pet between indoor and outdoor areas, and make sure every family member knows that the animal must not be left in a car. If several people share care, designate who checks outdoor water and shade and who has the emergency clinic’s number. A written plan is especially useful when a heat advisory lasts overnight or when a pet sitter is covering your normal routine.

Plan walks and exercise around heat

Choose timing and intensity

Walk, hike, or run during the coolest practical hours. Keep the route short enough that you can return indoors quickly, build in rest breaks, and carry enough water for the entire outing. On particularly hot or humid days, replace a normal workout with brief, calm activity or indoor enrichment. The AVMA recommends reducing exertion, taking breaks, and avoiding hot surfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the walking surface

Asphalt, concrete, artificial turf, sand, and other surfaces can become hot enough to injure paw pads even when the air feels tolerable. Choose shaded grass or another cooler route when available. If you cannot comfortably keep your hand on a surface for several seconds, do not ask your pet to walk on it. This hand test is a practical caution, not a guarantee of safety; shade, wind, humidity, and the pet’s condition still matter.

Use a simple go-or-skip decision

Conditions Safer choice What to carry or check
Cooler period, low exertion, shaded route Short walk with frequent observation and an easy return route Water, a bowl, and a plan for shade
Hot or humid period, direct sun, or hot pavement Postpone, shorten substantially, or substitute calm indoor activity Check the surface and your pet’s breathing before leaving
Extreme heat, no shade, or a vulnerable pet Skip outdoor exercise except for essential brief toileting Keep the pet indoors and contact your veterinarian for individualized limits

Stop immediately if the pet begins panting unusually hard, becomes restless or unsteady, seeks an unusual place to lie down, or otherwise behaves abnormally. Move indoors, offer water, and monitor closely. Escalating or persistent signs require a veterinary call.

Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle

Do not leave a dog, cat, or other pet alone in a parked vehicle, even if the car is in the shade, the windows are cracked, or the outdoor temperature does not seem extreme. A vehicle can become dangerous quickly, and ventilation through an open window does not make unattended confinement safe. The AVMA specifically advises against this practice.

The ASPCA reported on July 16, 2026, that 32 states and the District of Columbia have laws addressing leaving an animal unattended in a confined vehicle under dangerous conditions. The laws do not have identical scope or protections, so check current local law rather than relying on the state count. Legal rules should never be treated as a safety threshold: the safest choice is to leave the pet at home or use a pet-friendly destination where the animal can remain with you.

Recognize heat stress and heatstroke

Heat illness can worsen rapidly. The AVMA lists anxiousness, excessive panting, restlessness, drooling, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, and collapse as warning signs. Cornell also identifies weakness, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and breathing difficulty.

Sign What it can indicate What to do
Heavy or unusual panting, restlessness, anxiousness, or excessive drooling Early heat stress, especially after exertion or sun exposure Stop activity, move to a cool area, offer water, and call a veterinarian if it does not promptly settle or if other signs occur
Weakness, lethargy, unsteadiness, confusion, or abnormal behavior Progressing heat illness Begin emergency response and arrange veterinary care immediately
Vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, abnormal gum or tongue color Serious systemic effects Call an emergency clinic, start gentle cooling, and leave for care without delay
Collapse or inability to stand Potential heatstroke and life-threatening deterioration Treat as an emergency: call ahead, cool gently, and transport immediately

Do not wait for a thermometer reading. A pet can be seriously ill before you can measure its temperature, and attempting to obtain a reading must not delay a veterinary call.

What early changes should you take seriously?

Compare behavior with your pet’s normal response to exercise. A dog or cat that usually settles after a short rest but remains intensely panting, restless, weak, or disoriented needs attention. Do not dismiss symptoms because the animal is young, accustomed to summer weather, or has access to water. Heat and humidity can make a familiar route unsafe, and a vulnerable pet may deteriorate faster than a healthy one. When in doubt, stop the activity and call a veterinary professional for advice.

What to do if heatstroke is suspected

Heatstroke is an emergency. Call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital as soon as you recognize concerning signs, explain the heat exposure and symptoms, and ask where to go. Calling ahead lets the clinic prepare and helps you receive location-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. End the exposure. Move the pet out of direct sun into shade or a comfortably cool indoor area. Minimize walking and handling; carry the animal if necessary and safe.
  2. Start gentle cooling while arranging transport. The AVMA’s 2025 first-aid handout advises gently placing towels wetted with room-temperature water around the neck, armpits, and groin, refreshing them every few minutes. Its guidance says a fan may blow cool air.
  3. Offer water only if the pet is alert and able to swallow. UC Davis advises cool, not ice-cold, water and cool damp towels in its summer pet-hazards guidance. Never force water into a weak, confused, vomiting, or unconscious animal.
  4. Avoid extreme cooling. Do not use ice water or put the pet into a tub of cool or cold water. The AVMA handout specifically advises against a tub of cool or cold water. Follow the emergency clinician’s instructions if they differ for your pet’s condition.
  5. Transport promptly. Keep the vehicle comfortably cool, continue following the clinic’s advice, and do not postpone the trip to complete a home cooling routine. Tell the veterinary team when the exposure occurred, what signs you saw, and what cooling you attempted.

Cooling measures are first aid, not a substitute for professional treatment. A pet that appears better still needs veterinary guidance because internal injury can continue after the visible panting or weakness improves.

Why cooling advice can look inconsistent

Veterinary sources agree on the essentials—remove heat exposure, cool gently, and obtain urgent care—but describe some details differently. UC Davis’s older, dog-specific article recommends room-temperature water and a fan and warns against ice water and wet blankets. The AVMA’s 2025 handout describes room-temperature wet towels around specific body areas and says a fan may be used. These differences are a reason to call the clinic immediately and follow the instructions given for your pet, not to delay transport while choosing between home protocols.

After the emergency: veterinary evaluation matters

Heatstroke can injure organs even when a pet is awake and walking again. The veterinarian may need to assess hydration, circulation, temperature control, kidney and liver function, clotting, and other complications. Ask what monitoring is needed at home, which symptoms require a return visit, and how long to restrict activity.

Do not resume normal exercise immediately after a heat illness. Your veterinarian can set a gradual plan based on the pet’s species, age, health, and the severity of the episode. Dr. Karl Jandrey of UC Davis summarized the prevention principle this way: “The best way to avoid heatstroke is to slowly reintroduce activity to your pet, while ensuring it has breaks for drinking plenty of water or cooling off in a pool or safe body of water.” The statement appears in the UC Davis Center for Companion Animal Health.

Prepare an outing kit before the next hot day

A small kit can make a short, necessary outing safer, but it cannot make extreme conditions safe for prolonged activity.

  • Enough fresh drinking water for the pet and the planned route.
  • An ordinary bowl or portable bowl for serving water.
  • A leash, identification, and a phone with your veterinarian’s and nearest emergency clinic’s numbers.
  • A plan for shaded rest and a quick return to a cool indoor location.
  • A towel that can be wetted with room-temperature water if a veterinarian or emergency clinician directs first-aid cooling.

Check the forecast, route, surface temperature, water availability, and the pet’s condition before leaving. If any part of the plan depends on leaving the animal unattended in a vehicle, cancel the outing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on cracked windows or shade in a car: neither prevents dangerous heat buildup.
  • Waiting for collapse: weakness, confusion, breathing trouble, vomiting, abnormal gums, and unsteady movement are already urgent signs.
  • Using ice-cold water or a cold bath: follow veterinary guidance for gentle cooling instead.
  • Forcing water: an impaired pet can aspirate; offer it only when the animal is alert and able to swallow.
  • Using a cooling product as permission to exercise longer: accessories do not replace reduced exposure, shade, water, and rest.
  • Assuming a familiar routine is safe: heat, humidity, direct sun, and a pet’s health can change the risk from one day to the next.

Questions to settle before a heat wave

Ask your veterinarian which warning signs are most concerning for your pet, how much activity is appropriate, and whether heart, lung, breathing, weight, age, coat, or other health factors change the plan. Save the regular clinic and nearest emergency hospital numbers in your phone, confirm holiday and overnight coverage, and identify a cool room where the pet can stay. If your pet becomes ill, be ready to describe the time and type of exposure, activity level, symptoms, water consumed, and first-aid steps. That information helps the clinical team triage quickly.

For cats and dogs alike, prevention is built around the same essentials: cool indoor rest, clean water, shade, limited exertion, and supervision. Species, breed, age, and medical history still matter, so do not use another animal’s tolerance as a benchmark for yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical heat-wave decision rule

If you can keep the pet cool, hydrated, shaded, and under continuous observation, a brief low-exertion outing during a cooler period may be reasonable for a healthy animal. If you cannot provide those conditions—or if the pet is short-nosed, elderly, overweight, thick-coated, or affected by heart or breathing disease—keep the animal indoors and ask your veterinarian about alternatives. At the first sign of heat illness, stop the activity, begin gentle cooling, call a veterinary professional, and travel for care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I protect my pet during a heat wave?

Keep the pet in a cool indoor area, provide fresh water and shade, reduce or skip strenuous exercise, walk only during cooler periods, avoid hot surfaces, and supervise all outdoor time. Never leave the animal alone in a parked vehicle.

Can I leave my pet in a car if the windows are cracked or the car is parked in shade?

No. The AVMA advises never leaving a pet unattended in a parked vehicle. A car can become dangerous quickly even with cracked windows, shade, or seemingly moderate weather.

When is it too hot to walk my dog?

There is no universal safe temperature. Heat, humidity, direct sun, airflow, surface temperature, breed, age, body condition, health, acclimation, and exercise intensity all matter. During extreme heat or high humidity, skip strenuous activity and limit outdoor time to essential brief toileting.

What are signs that a dog or cat is overheating?

Warning signs include unusually heavy panting, anxiousness, restlessness, excessive drooling, weakness, lethargy, unsteadiness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, abnormal gum or tongue color, and collapse.

What should I do if my pet has heatstroke?

Call a veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately and arrange transport. Move the pet into shade or a comfortably cool indoor area, begin gentle cooling with room-temperature wet towels as directed by the AVMA, offer cool—not ice-cold—water only if the pet is alert and can swallow, and do not delay professional care.

Should I use ice water or a cold bath to cool a sick pet?

No. The AVMA advises against placing a pet in a tub of cool or cold water. Follow the emergency clinician’s instructions for gentle cooling while traveling for care.

Are some pets more vulnerable to heatstroke?

Yes. Extra caution is warranted for flat-faced breeds, older or overweight animals, thick-coated dogs, and pets with heart, lung, respiratory, or other breathing problems. Ask your veterinarian for individualized limits.
