Identify the alloy and service environment, prepare the surface correctly, then use a chemical conversion coating or anodic treatment that is compatible with any sealer, primer, and paint. Design every joint to control galvanic corrosion when magnesium touches another metal.
For parts that need strong outdoor corrosion protection and paint adhesion, ASTM D1732-03(2023) says a conversion-coat class is necessary. The correct process still depends on the alloy, part geometry, exposure, paint system, and applicable drawing or engineering specification.

Why magnesium parts need a protection system
Magnesium alloys can be useful where low mass matters, but an unprotected surface is a poor assumption for a durable assembly. The finish must do several jobs at once: limit attack during storage and service, provide a stable base for paint, survive handling and assembly, and avoid creating a new galvanic problem at fasteners or joints.
Surface preparation is therefore part of the corrosion design. Washing or acid-pickling alone is not equivalent to a protective finish. ASTM International’s D1732-03(2023) covers chemical and anodic treatments used to prepare magnesium-alloy surfaces for painting and states: “When a high degree of corrosion protection and paint adhesion are desired, as in many outdoor environments, surface preparation by one of the above conversion-coat classes is necessary.”

There is no defensible, all-purpose number for the life of an unspecified magnesium part. Corrosion rate and coating life depend on alloy, contaminants, humidity, salts, temperature, geometry, coating quality, and joint design. A finish specification and inspection plan are more useful than a generic “years of protection” claim.
Start with the six decisions that control the finish
Before choosing a bath or coating, document the conditions below. They determine whether a chemical conversion coating, anodic treatment, paint system, sealing step, or a combination is appropriate.
| Decision | Questions to answer | Why it changes the process |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy and condition | What exact magnesium alloy, temper, casting or wrought condition, and heat treatment are specified? | Surface reactions and dimensional or appearance limits can differ by alloy and part condition. A finisher needs the material designation, not just “magnesium.” |
| Exposure | Will the part stay indoors, see outdoor humidity and rain, encounter marine salt, or face an industrial atmosphere? | ASTM B879 notes that service conditions help determine the chemical conversion process. Mild indoor service is a different requirement from cyclic wet-and-dry or salt exposure. |
| Paint requirement | Will the part be painted, and which primer or topcoat is required? | Pretreatment must provide the specified paint adhesion and remain compatible with the organic system. SAE AMSM3171A addresses pretreatment intended to improve corrosion resistance and produce a surface suitable for organic paint finishes. |
| Protection level | Is the finish for temporary storage, ordinary indoor use, or a high-protection outdoor assembly? | ASTM D1732 distinguishes simple cleaning or pickling from conversion-coat classes when high protection and adhesion are required. |
| Mixed-material assembly | Will magnesium touch steel, aluminum, copper, carbon-fiber material, or another conductive material? Where are fasteners, inserts, and drains? | A coating does not automatically eliminate galvanic corrosion at a damaged coating, edge, joint, or trapped electrolyte. |
| Compliance and process controls | Which drawing, customer, military, automotive, aerospace, or environmental requirements apply? | Bath chemistry, masking, thickness, inspection, waste handling, and approved suppliers may be controlled by the finish specification. |
If any answer is unknown, stop before selecting a product. Give the finisher the part drawing, alloy certificate, service environment, paint stack, masking requirements, and acceptance criteria.
The main protection routes
Chemical conversion coatings
A chemical conversion coating reacts with the prepared magnesium surface to create a protective, paint-receptive layer without using an external electrical circuit. ASTM B879, Standard Practice for Applying Non-Electrolytic Conversion Coatings on Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys, covers this route. Its active page identifies revision B879-17R22 and explains that service conditions influence process selection. It describes varying protection in mild indoor storage or service and allows supplementary sealing where applicable.

Conversion coating is often the practical pretreatment beneath primer and paint. It can be useful when the drawing calls for a chemical treatment, when part geometry makes electrical fixturing difficult, or when a specified paint system has been qualified over that pretreatment. The exact bath, activation, rinse, dwell time, temperature, and post-treatment must come from the governing specification or the qualified finisher; ASTM B879 is not a universal recipe for every alloy.
Anodic treatment
Anodic treatment uses an electrical process to form a more engineered surface layer. ASTM D1732 says anodic treatments are generally more protective than the chemical treatments covered by that practice. SAE’s AMSM45202 covers equipment, materials, and procedures for anodic treatment of magnesium alloys when the objective is increased corrosion resistance or preparation for a protective organic finish. The SAE page lists verified revision AMSM45202B dated September 20, 2017.
Anodizing is not automatically the best choice. Electrical contact, racking marks, current distribution, dimensional tolerance, appearance, sealing, and compatibility with the paint stack all need review. Ask the finisher how the specified alloy and geometry behave in the proposed process and what areas must be masked.
Pretreatment followed by primer and paint
For many outdoor parts, the durable system is pretreatment plus an organic coating rather than pretreatment alone. SAE AMSM3171A, stabilized September 14, 2022, covers processing intended both to improve corrosion resistance and to produce surfaces suitable for organic paint finish systems.

Specify the whole stack: conversion or anodic treatment, any sealer, primer chemistry, topcoat, cure schedule, edge coverage, and repair method. A primer selected without regard to the magnesium pretreatment can lose adhesion or leave the substrate vulnerable at scratches and cut edges. Paint is a barrier, not permission to skip cleaning and conversion treatment.
Sealing and supplementary layers
Some conversion systems permit a supplementary sealing step. Whether to seal, and with what material, depends on the process specification and the subsequent paint. Sealing can change electrical behavior, appearance, adhesion, and repair procedures, so it should be treated as a qualified part of the system rather than an improvised final wipe-on step.
Match the route to the service environment
| Typical requirement | Likely starting point | Questions that still require qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mild indoor storage or service, no paint | A chemical conversion coating covered by ASTM B879 may be suitable. | Confirm the exact alloy, humidity and contamination exposure, appearance, and whether a sealer is permitted. |
| Indoor part that must be painted | Use a specified conversion or anodic pretreatment qualified with the primer and topcoat. | Verify adhesion, cure, masking, dimensional limits, and touch-up requirements. |
| Outdoor part requiring high protection and paint adhesion | Use one of the conversion-coat classes identified by ASTM D1732, often within a complete primer/topcoat system; evaluate anodic treatment where required. | Define wet/dry cycling, salt or industrial exposure, joint design, inspection, and repair criteria. |
| Severe or unusual exposure, tight tolerances, or critical hardware | Have an approved finisher select and qualify the conversion or anodic process against the controlling engineering specification. | Require process records, lot traceability, test methods, and acceptance limits rather than relying on a generic coating name. |
| Assembly with dissimilar metals | Combine the surface finish with electrical isolation, sealing, drainage, and compatible fastener design. | Review the entire joint; the coating alone may not protect a damaged edge or crevice. |
This table is a screening framework, not an alloy-by-alloy approval list. The standards describe process scope and selection factors, not one universal finish for every part.

- Capture the part definition. Record the alloy designation, casting or wrought form, heat treatment, drawing revision, critical dimensions, cosmetic zones, threaded features, and surfaces that must remain uncoated. Include the source of the material certification.
- Describe the real exposure. State indoor or outdoor use, rain, condensation, marine salt, industrial chemicals, temperature range, cleaning fluids, storage duration, and whether water can collect in pockets. “Outdoor” is not a complete environment description.
- Define the finish stack. Decide whether the requirement is chemical conversion, anodic treatment, pretreatment plus primer and paint, or a specified combination. Cite the applicable standard or customer finish callout. ASTM D1732, ASTM B879, AMSM3171A, and AMSM45202 cover different scopes; they are not interchangeable labels.
- Design the assembly before finishing. Identify every dissimilar-metal contact, fastener, insert, washer, bushing, carbon-fiber interface, and drain path. Specify insulating washers or sleeves, joint sealant, edge sealing, and drainage where appropriate. Leave access for inspection and repair.
- Prepare the surface under controlled conditions. Remove oil, shop dirt, corrosion products, and residues using the approved cleaning and activation sequence. Do not substitute an unqualified household cleaner or abrasive that embeds contamination or changes dimensions. Mask electrical contacts, bearing fits, threads, and other no-finish zones as the drawing requires.
- Apply the qualified conversion or anodic treatment. The processor should control chemistry, bath condition, temperature, time, electrical parameters where applicable, rinsing, fixturing, and lot traceability. Ask for records required by the purchase order or quality plan.
- Seal, prime, and paint when specified. Follow the qualified window between pretreatment and paint. Control primer and topcoat mixing, film build, flash time, cure, edge coverage, and access to hidden faces. Do not assume a thicker coat is automatically better; excess film can crack, interfere with fits, or hide defects.
- Inspect before assembly. Check coverage, discoloration or bare areas, blisters, runs, pinholes, scratches, masking, thread condition, critical dimensions, and adhesion using the method required by the finish specification. If a test coupon is required, process it with the production lot rather than treating it as a substitute for part inspection.
- Assemble without damaging the system. Use approved tools and torque procedures, prevent chipped edges around fasteners, apply specified joint sealants or isolators, and remove metal swarf. A pristine coating can be defeated by a steel washer cutting through it.
- Document release and maintenance. Keep alloy, lot, process, inspection, repair, and assembler records. Establish how scratches, drilled holes, or coating damage will be cleaned, re-pretreated, sealed, and repainted; an improvised touch-up can be incompatible with the original system.
Galvanic corrosion: solve the joint, not just the surface
Magnesium used beside another conductive material creates a galvanic-corrosion design issue, especially when moisture or salt bridges the materials. A Pacific Northwest National Laboratory presentation hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy identifies galvanic corrosion as a major challenge when magnesium alloys are combined with other metals or materials: Low-cost Corrosion Protection for Magnesium (June 2, 2020).

Review these features as a system:
- Electrical isolation: Use approved nonconductive washers, sleeves, gaskets, or coatings where the design permits, and ensure they remain compressed and intact.
- Joint sealing: Prevent electrolyte from entering a lap joint or fastener annulus, while avoiding a seal that traps water permanently.
- Drainage: Eliminate pockets and provide paths for rinse water and condensation to leave.
- Area and edge effects: Protect cut edges, holes, threads, and coating transitions; these are common locations for a damaged barrier.
- Fastener compatibility: Select fastener, washer, plating, and sealant combinations through the responsible engineering specification rather than by appearance alone.
- Inspection access: Make it possible to see and clean the joint during service.
The PNNL presentation discusses limitations of conventional conversion coatings, anodizing or plasma-electrolytic-oxidation approaches, and organic coatings, and reports research on laser surface processing for AZ31. That research context does not establish commercial availability or suitability for a particular production part; treat any experimental route as a qualification project, not a drop-in recommendation.
Chromium safety and environmental controls
Do not casually specify a legacy hexavalent-chromium process. ASTM D1732 says its hexavalent-chromium-based methods are not recommended because hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen. The same standard’s safety section requires users to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine which regulations apply.
Ask a qualified processor to identify the chemistry, exposure controls, waste treatment, worker-protection measures, and regulatory obligations before work begins. “Chromate” in an old drawing is not enough information to authorize a bath. If the drawing permits alternatives, have engineering and environmental personnel approve the replacement and verify paint compatibility and performance.

Quality checks and common failure modes
Bare or uneven areas
Likely causes include inadequate cleaning, poor racking, masking errors, air entrapment, exhausted bath chemistry, or a geometry-related current-density problem in anodic treatment. Quarantine the lot, map the defects, and have the finisher determine whether stripping and reprocessing is allowed. Do not conceal a bare area with paint without restoring the specified pretreatment.

Blistering or peeling paint
Investigate contamination, incomplete conversion, excessive delay before priming, incompatible primer, incorrect cure, moisture under the film, and damage during assembly. Use the adhesion and inspection method in the applicable finish specification; a visual pass alone cannot establish adhesion.
White powder, pitting, or corrosion at a joint
Inspect for galvanic contact, a breached coating, trapped electrolyte, unsealed edges, and incompatible fasteners. Correct the joint design and isolation, not just the visible deposit. If the base metal is pitted or dimensionally affected, obtain an engineering disposition before repair.
Dimension or fit problems after finishing
Review masking, film build, anodic growth, threads, bearing fits, and cure shrinkage against drawing tolerances. A process change that improves corrosion resistance may still be unacceptable if it closes a passage or changes a precision fit.

Unclear specification or conflicting requirements
Stop production and resolve the conflict with the design authority. A standard practice, a customer drawing, and a paint manufacturer’s instruction may impose different requirements; the governing document and order of precedence must be explicit.
What not to do
- Do not rely on bare magnesium, oil, wax, or a decorative spray coating for a demanding outdoor application.
- Do not assume an aluminum or steel finishing process transfers directly to magnesium.
- Do not select a coating solely by color or a vendor’s generic “magnesium-safe” wording.
- Do not sand through a conversion coating and leave the exposed area untreated.
- Do not use the 0.001 in. (25 μm) per side figure as a general material-removal allowance. ASTM D1732 mentions that depth in a context-specific note about acid pickling to remove contamination for coating-quality-control testing; it is not a universal DIY instruction or a recommendation for every part.
- Do not treat a laboratory or presentation-stage process as commercially qualified without production trials, inspection criteria, and engineering approval.
When to use a qualified metal finisher
Use a specialist whenever the part is safety-critical, exposed outdoors or to salt, assembled with dissimilar metals, dimensionally sensitive, painted, or governed by a customer or regulated specification. Provide the finisher with the exact alloy, drawing, exposure description, paint system, masking map, inspection requirements, and prohibited chemistries. Request a process review before production, representative test coupons when required, lot traceability, and a written repair procedure.
For a simple indoor prototype, you can still ask the same questions even if the initial finish is less demanding. The goal is to avoid discovering—after assembly—that the chosen cleaner, conversion layer, primer, or fastener created an incompatibility that cannot be repaired economically.
