Protect an industrial PC by matching the exact computer and the finished installation to the site’s heat, contamination, moisture, and vibration—not by choosing a single headline IP rating. Measure conditions first, check the model’s operating limits and test methods, then design mounting, sealing, cooling, cable restraint, and maintenance as one system. A sealed cabinet can stop dust while overheating the computer, and a panel PC’s protected front may leave its rear and connectors effectively open to the environment.
Start with a site-specific environmental record
Before selecting a computer or enclosure, document the conditions at the proposed mounting point. Record normal and peak ambient temperature, temperature inside any existing cabinet, direct sunlight or radiant heat from machinery, available airflow, dust type and concentration, moisture or washdown exposure, vibration frequency and severity, shock events, and the strength of the mounting surface. Note whether dust is conductive and whether the area has hazardous-location or other site approval requirements.

Use the worst credible combination, not a comfortable average. A catalog operating range measured with a particular processor, airflow, storage device, orientation, or workload may not apply after the unit is installed in a sealed cabinet at full CPU load. Identify where the computer actually takes in heat or rejects it: an air intake, chassis surface, heat pipe, or external heatsink. Measure there during a representative production cycle when the surrounding machinery and cabinet are at their hottest.

Keep the computer within its real thermal limits
Check the model and the installed condition
Find the exact model and configuration manual, not just a family brochure. Confirm the permitted operating temperature, processor and storage options covered by that range, required airflow, mounting orientation, clearance around heat-dissipating surfaces, and any restrictions on CPU load. Compare the temperature at the intake or chassis with that specification. Do not transfer a range from a fanless configuration to a fan-cooled configuration, or from an open bench to a closed cabinet.

For a concrete illustration, Dell’s Edge Gateway 3003 environmental specification states that the maximum operating temperature when the gateway is inside an enclosure is 60°C (140°F) or less. That is a product-specific enclosure condition, not a universal limit for industrial PCs.
Do a heat balance for an enclosure
A cabinet must dispose of the heat generated by the PC, power supplies, drives, displays, and other electronics while also handling ambient temperature, solar gain, and heat conducted from machinery. Sealing the cabinet reduces contamination entry but also removes the easiest path for heat to escape. Adding a filter fan may lower temperature, yet it can pull dust into the enclosure; a closed-loop air conditioner or heat exchanger avoids that path but introduces capacity, condensate, maintenance, and power considerations.
Rittal’s product FAQ notes that climate control may be needed when the target enclosure temperature is significantly below ambient and advises considering condensation and corrosion along with ingress. Select a cooling method whose sealing, filtration, condensate management, and corrosion resistance suit the site. A generic open fan is not an automatic solution for a dusty process.

Preserve clearances and verify under load
- Keep the manufacturer’s specified clearance around vents, heatsinks, and cable exits.
- Do not place a hot power supply or drive directly against the PC’s intake or heat-rejection surface.
- Route high-temperature cables and hydraulic or steam lines away from the chassis.
- Account for filter loading: a clean-filter calculation is not the end-of-life condition.
- Test the completed assembly at expected peak ambient, normal production load, and the highest credible CPU, storage, and network activity.
Measure temperatures at the computer intake, hottest chassis point, storage device, power supply, and cabinet air. Log the values long enough to capture thermal soak. If the result is close to the limit, change the enclosure or cooling design rather than treating a short test below the limit as a safety margin. Re-test after doors, glands, filters, and cable bundles are installed because each can alter airflow.
Choose dust protection from the complete IP code
Understand what IP5X and IP6X mean
IP ratings are defined for a specified assembly and test condition. Beckhoff’s explanation of IEC 60529 distinguishes IP5X, dust-protected, from IP6X, dust-tight. With IP5X, some dust may enter, but penetration must not impair satisfactory operation or safety. IP6X is intended to exclude dust. The two levels are not interchangeable when fine or conductive contamination is present.

Read every character of the rating and identify the surface it covers. The front of a panel computer may be rated IP54 or IP65 while the rear remains IP20. Beckhoff’s intended-use documentation gives examples of this front-versus-rear distinction. IP20 at the rear does not protect against water and is not suitable for a dusty or wet area unless the product documentation and installation specifically provide that protection.
Rate the finished installation, not only the product
A panel cutout, door seal, cable gland, connector cap, drain, hinge, or field-drilled hole can reduce the protection achieved by the computer alone. Verify that the gasket is compressed as specified, the panel is flat and strong enough, and all connectors and unused openings have the required sealing accessories. Check that a door can close without pinching cables or distorting the seal. If the computer is mounted in a separate cabinet, the cabinet, glands, cooling equipment, and service openings all become part of the environmental boundary.
An IP code does not prove chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, suitability for every washdown chemical or pressure, or approval for a hazardous location. Rittal also advises evaluating corrosion and condensation. Use the site’s washdown procedure, chemical compatibility data, and approval documents in addition to the ingress rating.
Treat conductive dust as an electrical hazard
Metallic, carbon, and some process powders can bridge conductors or deposit on insulating surfaces. Beckhoff warns that “Penetration or deposition of conductive dust can lead to short circuits, malfunctions, fire or explosion hazards.” Its data for operation and environment describes a hazardous-area context in which IP6X is required for conductive dust. That requirement belongs to the cited context; it is not a blanket approval for every installation. Have the site safety authority verify the applicable area classification, equipment certification, grounding, cleaning method, and enclosure design.
Design for vibration and shock at the mounting point
Match the test to the real vibration
“Vibration tested” is incomplete without the frequency range, acceleration, axis, duration, mounting configuration, orientation, and whether the test covered the operating or storage state. Obtain those values for the exact model and compare them with measured or specified plant conditions. A computer that passes a laboratory sweep on a rigid panel may experience a different load on a flexible machine guard or a resonant arm.

Siemens’ S7-1200 G2 technical specifications show why mounting matters: the vibration conditions are tied to the cited panel or DIN-rail configuration, and Siemens recommends panel mounting or DIN-rail end retainers for high-vibration applications. This is product-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every industrial computer.
Use a rigid support and prevent loosening
Mount to a structurally sound panel or frame unless the system was specifically designed for an isolation mount. Tighten fasteners to the manufacturer’s torque and use the specified washers, thread treatment, or locking hardware. Dell notes embedded Nylock seals on Edge Gateway 3003 screws to resist vibration and loosening; that feature is an example of a product design, not a reason to omit the specified fastener procedure on another model.
Secure cables with strain relief close to the computer. A heavy cable swinging from a connector can apply a repeating bending load even when the chassis vibration is acceptable. Leave only the service loop required by the connector maker, support cable bundles independently, and ensure that a door or maintenance movement cannot tug on the ports.
Use isolation only when it is engineered
Rittal identifies dampers and shock absorbers as options for mechanical decoupling. Their stiffness and travel must be selected for the computer’s mass, center of gravity, vibration spectrum, and shock pulse. An isolator that is too soft can amplify motion at resonance, allow connectors to work loose, or interfere with grounding and bonding. Validate the complete mounted system after adding isolation rather than assuming that a softer mount is safer.
Decide whether the computer needs an enclosure
An enclosure is useful when it creates a controlled thermal, dust, moisture, and mechanical environment. It is not automatically protective: a poorly sized sealed box can exceed the computer’s temperature limit, and a fan-cooled box can draw in the very dust it was meant to exclude.

| Approach | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Open or ventilated mounting | Good heat rejection and simple servicing | Exposes the PC to dust, water, impact, and vibration; requires a suitable environmental rating |
| Sealed cabinet with natural heat dissipation | Limits dust and spray entry without exchanging air | Internal temperature can climb; calculate heat load and cabinet surface area |
| Filtered fan enclosure | Moves more heat at relatively low cost | Filter loading and fan airflow can admit dust; maintain filters and verify the resulting IP protection |
| Closed-loop heat exchanger or air conditioner | Separates cabinet air from contaminated ambient air and can control temperature | Needs capacity, power, condensate control, corrosion management, and service access |
| Vibration-isolated enclosure or mount | Can reduce transmitted vibration or shock | Isolation resonance, grounding, cable movement, and fastener retention require engineering validation |
Choose enclosure material and finish for the site’s corrosion and cleaning chemistry. Provide a drain or condensate strategy that does not become an unsealed ingress path. Keep the service side accessible without leaving the computer exposed longer than necessary, and document how the enclosure is returned to its rated condition after maintenance.
Compare industrial PC and protection options systematically
When evaluating two computers or a computer-plus-enclosure design, compare the same evidence for each option. A single IP number or a wide temperature headline cannot substitute for installation details.

For a physical example of the evidence to request, Axiomtek lists its IPC980 as an IP67, fanless industrial system. The current listing states an operating range of −40°C to +60°C for specified processor generations and an industrial wide-temperature SSD with 0.7 m/s airflow, and it gives shock and vibration tests with specific methods and configurations. Treat those values as applying to the listed configuration; check the current datasheet before comparing it with another unit.
Install the protected system: a practical sequence
- Freeze the environmental requirements. Write down the measured temperature peaks, dust and moisture conditions, vibration profile, mounting surface, cable paths, and required approvals. Include a worst-case production state.
- Confirm the exact computer configuration. Record model, processor, memory, storage, power supply, heatsink or fan option, operating range, clearances, IP-covered surfaces, and published vibration and shock tests.
- Select the environmental boundary. Decide whether the computer can be exposed directly, needs a sealed cabinet, or needs a filtered or closed-loop cooling system. Size cooling for the sum of internal heat loads plus ambient and solar gains.
- Prepare the structure. Verify panel thickness, flatness, stiffness, DIN-rail condition, fastener access, bonding, and clearance from hot machinery. Add engineered isolators only if their natural frequency and load rating fit the measured vibration.
- Install seals and glands. Use the manufacturer’s gasket, gland, connector cap, and torque instructions. Close every unused opening and route cables so they do not pull on seals or connectors.
- Secure against movement. Tighten specified fasteners, install DIN-rail end retainers where required, add strain relief, and support heavy cable bundles independently of the PC ports.
- Check heat rejection. Keep vents and heatsinks clear, separate other heat sources, install filters in the correct direction, and verify that a closed-loop cooler can reject the calculated heat to the ambient environment.
- Test the completed assembly. Run the highest expected load at peak ambient and inspect intake, chassis, storage, power supply, and cabinet temperatures. Check for condensation, abnormal fan cycling, and blocked airflow.
- Perform a vibration and ingress inspection. Look for loose fasteners, connector movement, gasket compression, door distortion, cable chafing, and dust trails. Correct defects before production operation.
- Document the baseline. Record torque values, filter condition, temperature readings, enclosure configuration, and photos of cable routing so future maintenance can be compared with the original installation.
Maintain the protection over the computer’s life
Routine checks
- Inspect enclosure gaskets, latches, glands, connector caps, and panel cutouts for cracking, compression loss, or distortion.
- Clean or replace filters at an interval based on measured loading, not a generic calendar. Record the differential condition if the system provides a filter alarm.
- Look for dust deposits inside service areas, especially conductive or oily films, and use the site-approved de-energized cleaning procedure.
- Check fasteners, DIN-rail retainers, isolators, and cable clamps for loosening, fretting, or cracked brackets.
- Trend cabinet and chassis temperatures during the hottest season and after any software, processor, storage, or workload change.
- Inspect for condensation, corrosion, discoloration, and water tracks after washdown or large day-night temperature swings.
After any change
Replacing a drive, adding memory, changing a processor, moving a cable bundle, installing a display, or adding a fan can change heat generation, airflow, vibration, or sealing. Recheck the exact operating specification and repeat the relevant thermal, ingress, and mechanical checks. Treat a field modification as a change to the rated assembly, not as a cosmetic repair.
Troubleshoot symptoms by environmental cause
| Symptom | Likely environmental mechanism | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected shutdowns or thermal throttling | Cabinet heat accumulation, blocked clearance, overloaded filter, or insufficient cooler capacity | Measure intake and chassis temperatures under peak load; inspect airflow and filter condition |
| Intermittent I/O or network faults | Connector movement, cable strain, conductive contamination, or condensation | Inspect and restrain cables, examine connectors and deposits, and check humidity and condensation history |
| Fans running continuously | High ambient temperature, heat from adjacent equipment, or restricted airflow | Check cabinet heat balance, filter loading, clearances, and cooler capacity |
| Dust visible behind a panel | Rear surface or cable entry lacks the claimed protection, or a seal has failed | Identify which surface the IP rating covers; inspect gaskets, glands, and unused openings |
| Loose screws or cracked brackets | Vibration, resonance, inadequate locking, or an unsuitable isolator | Compare the mounting method with the manufacturer’s test configuration; inspect torque, retainers, and isolator selection |
| Corrosion or water marks | Condensation, washdown ingress, chemical attack, or incompatible enclosure material | Find the entry path, review washdown chemicals and temperature cycles, and check climate-control condensate management |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by IP number alone: the rating may apply only to the front, while the rear and connectors remain IP20 or otherwise unprotected.
- Putting a sealed computer in a hot box: contamination control does not override the model’s temperature limit.
- Using an open fan in dusty air: airflow can become a direct contamination path and filters require maintenance.
- Assuming “industrial” means vibration-proof: qualification is meaningful only with its test method and mounting configuration.
- Ignoring conductive dust: an apparently small deposit can create shorts, fire, explosion, or safety hazards.
- Relying on a generic cover: a dust cover does not provide a verified thermal balance, ingress rating, connector seal, or hazardous-area approval.
- Adding isolation without analysis: an incorrectly selected damper can amplify vibration and loosen cables or fasteners.
- Failing to retest after service: a new drive, gland, cable route, or fan can change the finished system’s thermal and environmental behavior.
Final design decision
Select the computer and enclosure only after the measured site conditions, exact model limits, covered surfaces, cooling capacity, vibration tests, mounting method, and approvals agree. Use a sealed enclosure when contamination demands it, but prove that the resulting internal temperature remains within the computer’s specification. Use IP6X rather than IP5X when the installation requires dust-tight protection, and obtain additional safety and hazardous-area approvals where conductive dust or classified locations are involved. A protected industrial PC is the result of a verified installation and maintenance plan, not a label on the box.

Frequently Asked Questions
What IP rating do I need for an industrial computer?
Choose from the dust, water, and cleaning exposure at the complete installation. IP5X is dust-protected, while IP6X is dust-tight; verify which surfaces, connectors, glands, and enclosure components carry the rating. The required rating can also be affected by conductive dust, washdown procedure, corrosion, condensation, and hazardous-area approvals.
Should I put an industrial PC in an enclosure?
Use an enclosure when it provides the environmental control your site needs, but calculate its heat balance first. A sealed cabinet can reduce dust and moisture entry while raising internal temperature above the computer’s operating limit. Select natural dissipation, filtered ventilation, or closed-loop climate control according to the measured heat load and contamination risk.
Is a fanless industrial PC always better in dusty areas?
A fanless design removes an intake path and can simplify contamination control, but it still produces heat and needs adequate chassis clearance or enclosure cooling. Confirm the exact processor, storage, airflow assumptions, temperature range, and mounting conditions rather than treating fanless operation as a universal solution.

How can I stop vibration from loosening an industrial PC?
Use the manufacturer’s specified panel or DIN-rail mounting, retainers, fastener torque, and locking hardware. Mount to a rigid structure, support cables with strain relief, and inspect fasteners and connectors routinely. Use dampers or shock mounts only after selecting them for the equipment mass and measured vibration spectrum.
