How to Protect Electronics from Power Surges and Water Damage During Monsoon Season

Protect electronics from monsoon storms by keeping them away from leaks and flood-prone areas, using suitable surge protection, and disconnecting sensitive equipment before lightning arrives—only if it is safe to do so. Once thunder begins, leave plugs, cords, and electrical equipment alone. If equipment gets wet or is exposed to floodwater, do not use it or restore power until it is completely dry and a qualified electrician has inspected it.

Before the storm: reduce exposure and prepare

Start with the water risk. Move computers, routers, televisions, chargers, and other sensitive devices off the floor and away from windows, exterior doors, roof leaks, and places that can flood. This is practical risk reduction: electrical equipment should not be exposed to water.

  • Keep cords and power strips out of areas where water could collect.
  • Make sure devices and their power supplies are not beneath a known leak.
  • Keep important files backed up. Battery-powered communications can also be useful during an outage, though no particular backup product is required.

The National Weather Service’s Tucson office recommends power-protection devices for sensitive equipment and unplugging electronics before a storm arrives. Local monsoon timing and electrical requirements vary, so follow guidance for your area.

Disconnect equipment before lightning arrives

If lightning is forecast and it is safe and practical, disconnect sensitive equipment before the storm reaches you. Do not wait until thunder begins: once a thunderstorm is underway, do not handle plugs, cords, wiring, or connected electronics. The National Weather Service also warns that wiring should not be touched during a thunderstorm.

What surge protection can—and cannot—do

A surge protective device (SPD) is intended to limit transient overvoltage risk to an electrical installation and connected equipment. It can reduce risk, but it does not make electronics lightning-proof. The National Weather Service states that “Typical surge protectors will not protect equipment from a lightning strike.” During a thunderstorm, avoid outlet-connected equipment rather than relying on a protector for safety.

Check the product documentation rather than assuming any power strip includes surge protection. Protection also depends on what is connected and how the device fits the electrical installation.

Compare protection by coverage and purpose

Option What it covers What to check
Plug-in, point-of-use SPD Equipment plugged into that device Confirm the product is actually a surge protective device and review its stated coverage. It does not protect against water exposure or guarantee protection from lightning.
Panel-level SPD Protection installed at the electrical panel, with coverage depending on the installation Confirm compatibility with the local electrical system with the manufacturer or installer; installation may require a qualified electrician.
Battery backup Temporary power during an outage, depending on the equipment Battery backup is a different function from surge protection. The cited guidance does not establish a particular model or capability.

Surges can also travel through incoming wired services beyond the power cable. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) identifies telephone and cable-TV services as possible paths. Consider which connected pathways a protection setup covers, and check system compatibility with the manufacturer or installer.

During a thunderstorm: keep away from electrical connections

Do not try to unplug devices after lightning begins. The CDC advises avoiding anything connected to an electrical outlet during a thunderstorm; its examples include computers, laptops, game systems, washers, dryers, and stoves. Do not touch wiring, plugs, cords, or connected equipment.

Avoid contact with plumbing as well: do not shower, wash dishes, or use sinks during lightning. A surge protector is not a substitute for these precautions.

Flooding or water exposure: do not operate wet equipment

Never use electrical equipment while standing in water. If circuits or equipment are wet, or are in or near floodwater, shut off power only if you can reach the panel without entering standing water. If the panel is not safely accessible, contact an electrician or emergency personnel instead.

If a device has been submerged

Do not attempt a DIY repair based on surface drying. Keep the device disconnected if that can be done without approaching electrical danger, and have it assessed by a qualified professional before reuse. There is no established safe DIY procedure for returning submerged electronics to service.

Choosing a setup for your home

Match the protection to the hazard rather than expecting one device to solve every problem:

  • For power surges: consider an SPD suited to the equipment and installation, and check which connected pathways it covers.
  • For outages: consider whether temporary battery power is needed; this is separate from surge protection.
  • For water: keep equipment elevated and dry, and use qualified inspection after exposure. A surge device does not prevent flood damage.

Official guidance supports these safety principles but does not establish a universally best brand, product rating, or installation configuration. NIST’s general surge-protection booklet, Surges Happen!, was published in 2001; it explains broad principles rather than endorsing specific products.
