Handle every disc by its edges
Use the center hole and outer rim
Grip a disc by its center hole and outer edge whenever practical. This keeps skin oils and fingerprints away from the playing surface. Hold the disc level and support it by the rim rather than pinching the data side between your fingers.
When removing a disc from a case, use the case’s center release mechanism and lift it by the hub and edge. Do not drag the playing surface across the case, a desk, or another disc. When taking a disc out of the PS5, place it directly into its case instead of setting it face-down nearby.
Keep the playing surface free of additions
Do not stick paper labels or tape to a PS5 game disc, and do not write on it. Adhesives and writing can add material to the disc, leave residue, or interfere with reliable handling. If you need to identify a disc, label the case or its storage location rather than the disc itself.

Avoid heat, humidity, and direct sunlight
Keep cased discs away from high temperatures, high humidity, and direct sunlight. PlayStation does not publish a numeric temperature or humidity limit in the cited care guidance, so there is no official household threshold to apply. The practical rule is to choose a stable, dry, shaded indoor location rather than a place exposed to weather or heat.

Avoid locations such as a sunny windowsill, a damp storage area, or a spot that becomes hot. Do not treat a car, an unconditioned shed, or another heat-exposed location as long-term disc storage. These examples follow the guide’s environmental warnings; they are not certified temperature ratings.
Do not stack loose discs or store them at an angle
PlayStation specifically warns against stacking uncased discs and storing uncased discs at an angle because these practices can cause warping. A loose stack also lets the playing surfaces rub together and makes it easy to scratch a disc while removing one from the middle.
If you have several games, keep each disc secured in its own case rather than creating a pile of bare discs. Do not leave a disc leaning against a book, console, or shelf divider. If a disc has no original case, obtain a protective replacement case instead of treating a sleeve or a loose binder as automatically equivalent; the official guidance recommends cases but does not establish that every alternative provides the same protection.

Clean a dirty PS5 disc without making it worse
Use the right cloth
For a dirty or scratched disc, PlayStation Support says: “Clean a scratched or dirty disc using a lint-free cleaning cloth made specifically for cleaning Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.” A soft cloth of that type is the appropriate starting point. Use it clean and dry unless the cloth manufacturer’s own instructions say otherwise.

Wipe from the center toward the edge
- Remove the disc from the console and hold it by the center hole and outer rim.
- Look for fingerprints, smudges, dust, or visible scratches under ordinary light.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.
- Wipe lightly in straight strokes from the center of the disc toward the outer edge.
- Rotate the disc and repeat with a clean section of cloth until the visible residue is gone.
- Check that no lint or moisture remains before putting the disc back in its case or console.
Do not wipe in circles. Circular strokes follow the data tracks and can make a problem harder for the drive to read; the manufacturer’s procedure is a center-to-edge motion.
Never apply household chemicals
Do not use solvents, record cleaners, anti-static spray, or other chemicals on a PS5 game disc. PlayStation warns that these products can damage discs. Do not spray a liquid directly onto the disc, and do not attempt to polish it with a household product.
Cleaning removes surface contamination; it does not repair a scratch. If a disc remains unreadable after proper cleaning, repeated wiping or stronger chemicals are not a repair strategy and may increase the damage.

A single read failure can come from the disc, its condition, insertion, or the console. PlayStation’s troubleshooting advice is to inspect and clean the disc, then try another supported disc before deciding that the console is at fault.
Step 1: Confirm the disc is inserted correctly
Remove the disc and insert it again according to the orientation shown for your PS5 setup. A console positioned horizontally and one positioned vertically can require different visible-side orientations. Check the on-screen or printed PS5 instructions for your installation rather than relying on a remembered orientation from another model.
Step 2: Inspect the disc
Look for fingerprints, smudges, dust, and scratches. Hold the disc by the rim so that the inspection itself does not add new fingerprints. A visibly damaged or heavily scratched disc may have a disc-specific problem even if the console is working normally.

Step 3: Clean it correctly
Use the lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cleaning cloth and wipe in straight lines from the center outward. Do not use solvents, record cleaner, anti-static spray, or other chemicals. Make sure the disc is free of loose lint before reinserting it.
Step 4: Try the disc again
Reinsert the clean, dry disc and allow the console a moment to recognize it. If the same disc still fails, do not keep scrubbing it or forcing it into the drive.
Step 5: Test another supported disc
Try another PS5 game disc, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD that you know is in readable condition. PlayStation Support recommends this comparison because it separates a problem affecting one disc from a problem affecting multiple supported discs.
Step 6: Interpret the comparison carefully

Do not conclude that the PS5 itself is defective after only one failed game disc. Conversely, do not assume every failed disc is dirty: scratches, warping, or a drive problem can produce similar symptoms.

The PS5 safety guide warns that moisture can condense on a disc or on the console lens when the console or disc is brought directly from a cold place into a warm one. Condensation can temporarily prevent normal reading.
- Remove the disc from the PS5.
- Turn the console off.
- Unplug the console from power.
- Leave the console and disc undisturbed until the moisture evaporates.
- Wait several hours if necessary; the guide does not promise a shorter fixed interval.
- Reinsert the disc only after the moisture has evaporated.
Do not try to speed the process with household heat, and do not reinsert the disc while moisture is present. The instruction is to allow evaporation, not to wipe the console lens yourself.

Build a simple disc-care routine
Every time you play
- Remove the disc by its center hole and outer edge.
- Keep fingers off the playing surface.
- Insert it without placing the disc face-down on a nearby surface.
- Put it back in its case as soon as the session ends.
When putting games away for an extended period
- Confirm the disc is seated in its case and the case is closed.
- Move the case to a dry, shaded location away from high heat and high humidity.
- Keep cases organized so discs are not left loose on a shelf or in a pile.
- Do not store uncased discs at an angle or stacked together.
If a disc has already been handled carelessly
Do not try to compensate with aggressive cleaning. Inspect it, use the correct lint-free cloth if it is dirty, and test it in the PS5. If it reads, store it properly from then on. If it does not read, compare it with another supported disc and follow the troubleshooting path above.
Choosing basic care accessories
The manufacturer-backed accessory categories are modest. If an original case is lost or broken, a replacement protective case can restore the case-based storage arrangement. Sleeves, wallets, and binders may be convenient, but the cited PlayStation material does not establish that they protect discs equally well. Whichever option you use, keep the disc secured, prevent surface-to-surface rubbing, and continue avoiding heat, high humidity, and direct sunlight.
What the official guidance does not specify
