Secure your linked email first, enable a sign-in method you can reliably access, save your recovery codes, and act quickly if you see an account change you did not make. Reports of account takeovers are not, by themselves, evidence of a confirmed PlayStation-wide breach: Sony’s published support guidance explains how to protect and recover individual accounts but does not establish an ongoing campaign or quantify its scope.
Start by securing the email linked to your PlayStation account
Your sign-in email is part of the account’s recovery path. If you receive a notice about a change you did not make, change the password for that email account and follow PlayStation’s account-recovery guidance. PlayStation warns: “If the email doesn’t state that the change was initiated by PlayStation, someone else might be trying to access your account.” PlayStation Account & Security

If you can still sign in, review your account security settings and enable an available stronger sign-in method. If you cannot sign in, or account details have been changed without your permission, use PlayStation’s recovery process rather than repeatedly trying old credentials.
Choose a sign-in method you can keep using
PlayStation documents passkey sign-in and two-step verification (2SV). The support guidance does not publish comparative test results that establish one option as best for everyone. Consider which devices you use, whether you can retain access to your phone or passkey-capable device, and how you will recover access if that device is unavailable.

PlayStation’s setup instructions are in its Account & Security guide. To create a passkey, go to Account Management → Security → “Sign in with Passkey” → “Create a Passkey.” For 2SV, go to Account Management → Security → “2-step Verification Status,” choose a verification method, and complete the prompts.
Save your 2SV recovery codes when you enable verification
PlayStation provides ten backup codes, and each can be used once. Record them when you turn on 2SV and keep them somewhere private that you can reach if your phone is lost or unavailable. Do not treat a used code as reusable. PlayStation Account & Security

During sign-in, PlayStation says the verification code is valid for ten minutes after the sign-in attempt. If you need to recover access with a backup code, choose “Trouble Receiving Code?” and then “Sign In Using a Backup Code.”

- Secure the linked email account. Change its password if you suspect someone else may have access, and protect that inbox so you can receive account-recovery messages.
- Reset your PlayStation password if you still control the sign-in email. In Account Management, select “Trouble Signing in?” and enter your sign-in ID (email address). Use the secure link PlayStation sends to reset the password. PlayStation recommends a password combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Use account recovery if details changed or you lost email access. Follow the recovery guidance for the specific problem, including an altered sign-in ID or inability to access the linked email. PlayStation Account & Security
- Contact PlayStation Support if self-service recovery is unavailable. Use the PlayStation Support/Online Assistant route if you cannot access your account or recovery options. The process described here is from US support pages; account procedures and support routes may differ in other regions.
If a PlayStation verification code does not arrive
PlayStation’s 2SV troubleshooting guidance recommends trying the following checks:

- Resend the verification code.
- Restart your phone.
- Check that airplane mode is off and that you have network signal.
- Contact your mobile provider if the problem continues.
If those steps do not restore access, or you have lost your phone and have no backup codes, contact PlayStation Support through the Online Assistant. Account-compromise reports should be treated as reports, not proof of a platform-wide breach. The PlayStation support pages provide individual account-security, troubleshooting, and recovery instructions; they do not identify a continuing hacking campaign, explain a common cause, or state how many accounts have been taken over. Sony’s PlayStation Online Safety Report 2024, published in February 2025, covers online safety and moderation measures, not account-takeover prevalence.

That distinction does not make an unexpected password-reset message or changed account detail harmless. Secure your email, use the account recovery process promptly, and contact support when you cannot restore access through the available self-service steps.
