Turn the player off, disconnect every cable, and place it on a clean, soft cloth. Remove loose dust with a manual blower or controlled electronics air duster, then wipe the gold-plated exterior very gently with a clean, soft microfiber or eyeglass lens cloth. Do not spray liquid on the player, and do not use alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, abrasive pads, polishing compounds, or rough cloths unless the exact model manual expressly permits a product.
Gold-plated trim and a gold-plated chassis are cosmetic finishes, not electrical contacts. Treat detachable plated plugs and jacks separately when crackling indicates oxidation. The least aggressive method that solves the actual problem is the safest method.

Why gold-plated audio players need gentler care
Gold plating can look durable while remaining a thin, vulnerable surface finish. Strong rubbing, trapped grit, or an incompatible solvent can leave visible marks or wear through the plating. Sony’s Help Guide for its gold-plated player states plainly: “The gold-plated parts are more sensitive than regular plated parts.” That warning applies to the player’s plated chassis, trim, logos, and other decorative exterior areas.

For context, Sony says the NW-WM1ZM2 uses plating with a purity of about 99.7% gold (Sony, 2022). Purity is not a scratch-resistance rating, and Sony publishes no general plating-thickness or scratch-resistance figure. Do not use the purity number to justify polishing, aggressive rubbing, or solvent cleaning.

Cleaning decisions should answer four questions:
- Is the problem loose dust, fingerprints, dried dirt, or a scratch?
- Is the surface cosmetic plating, or is it a detachable electrical contact?
- Does the model manual approve a particular cleaner?
- Can liquid or particles enter a seam, button, jack, display edge, or other opening?
If you cannot answer those questions, stop at dry dust removal and consult the model-specific manual.
Prepare a scratch-safe work area
Sony recommends working on a tabletop covered with a soft cloth to prevent scratches. Follow that advice before touching the player.
Use these materials
- A clean, high-pile microfiber cloth or eyeglass-cleaning cloth.
- A second clean, lint-free cloth for handling or drying.
- A soft protective mat or a freshly folded, lint-free cloth for the table.
- A manual camera blower or controlled electronics air duster for loose dust.
- Mild detergent only if the exact model manual allows it.
Remove contamination from the tools first
A cloth that contains grit can scratch a plated finish even when the fabric feels soft. Use a freshly laundered cloth, or a new lens-cleaning cloth. Do not reuse a cloth that has picked up sand, metal filings, polishing residue, or dirt from another device. Keep the cloth for the gold-plated player separate from cloths used with lubricants or household cleaners.
Disconnect and stabilize the player
- Turn the player completely off.
- Disconnect headphones, charging leads, line cables, memory cards, and other accessories.
- Place the player on the padded work surface so it cannot slide or rock.
- Work under bright, diffuse light. A strong lamp held at a low angle can reveal dust and fingerprints without requiring repeated wiping.
Do not clean a powered or charging player. Disconnecting it also prevents a cable or plug from dragging across the plated housing while you work.
Step-by-step: clean the gold-plated exterior
1. Inspect before touching the finish
Look for dust, fingerprints, dried residue, corrosion, and actual scratches. A scratch is a surface defect, not dirt; rubbing harder will not remove it and may enlarge the damaged area. Photographing an unusual mark before cleaning can help you distinguish an existing scratch from a new smudge.

2. Remove loose dust without contact
Use a manual blower or a controlled electronics air duster before bringing a cloth to the player. An audio-component cleaning guide recommends air first because wiping immediately can drag hard particles across the finish.
Direct the airflow across the surface and away from openings. Do not press a nozzle against the plating, and do not use a high-force blast that could drive dust into a jack, button gap, or seam. If a particle remains stuck, do not grind it into the finish; leave it for the damp-cloth step allowed by the manual.
3. Dry-wipe with a clean lens cloth
Fold the microfiber or eyeglass cloth so that you have a clean face and enough thickness to keep your fingers from pressing concentrated points into the finish. Sony’s exact instruction is to “Clean the player with a soft cloth, such as a cleaning cloth for eyeglasses.”
Use light, straight passes with minimal pressure. Lift the cloth at the end of each pass instead of scrubbing back and forth over the same spot. Rotate to a clean section as soon as the cloth collects visible dirt. Keep wiping infrequent: repeated contact is itself a source of wear on sensitive plating.
4. Treat crevices without pushing dirt inward
For a seam, button edge, jack surround, or display border, use air first and then the corner of a clean, dry lens cloth. Do not insert cloth, swabs, paper, or tools into an opening. Avoid pressing along a display edge where liquid could wick inside.

5. If the manual permits mild detergent, dampen the cloth—not the player
Sony allows a cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent for a very dirty player, while warning that water must not enter the player. “Slightly moistened” means damp enough to soften residue, not wet enough to drip or leave a film.
- Check the exact model manual for permission and any named detergent.
- Put the approved, diluted cleaner on the cloth away from the player.
- Wring or fold the cloth until no liquid can run from it.
- Touch only the dirty exterior area, using light passes.
- Immediately follow with a clean, dry cloth.
- Inspect seams, buttons, jacks, and display edges for any moisture before reconnecting power.
Never pour, mist, or spray cleaner onto the device. An electronics-cleaning guide likewise advises applying any approved cleaner to the cloth and keeping liquid away from openings.
6. Stop when the surface is clean
Do not continue polishing for a brighter appearance. Gold plating is not a metal surface that should be buffed like bare brass. Once dirt and fingerprints are gone, further passes add contact without solving a problem.
Can you use alcohol on a gold-plated player?
For the plated exterior, assume no unless the exact model manual explicitly says otherwise. Sony’s model guidance says: “Do not clean with solvents such as alcohol, naphtha, or paint thinner. These solvents may damage the surface of the player.” Sony’s consumer-care guidance also warns against thinner, benzene, and alcohol solvents.
Some third-party audio guides discuss isopropyl alcohol for other finishes or for connector contacts. That advice does not override a manufacturer’s finish-specific warning. A solvent that is acceptable on a bare metal contact, a glass surface, or another device may soften a coating, dull a plated area, attack adhesive, or mark printed graphics on this player.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not use alcohol wipes, solvent-based household wipes, nail-polish remover, benzene, naphtha, paint thinner, or an unlabeled degreaser on the chassis, trim, or logo. If a manual is silent, use a dry lens cloth and seek the manufacturer’s support guidance rather than guessing.
Materials and methods to avoid
| Material or method | Why it is risky | Safer choice |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol, naphtha, paint thinner, benzene, or other solvents | Sony warns these solvents may damage the player’s surface. | Dry lens cloth; mild detergent only when the model manual permits it. |
| Abrasive paper, polishing compounds, metal brushes, or abrasive erasers | They can scratch or remove sensitive plating. | Air removal followed by minimal-contact microfiber cleaning. |
| Melamine sponges | The abrasive foam can mark a delicate finish. | Clean, high-pile microfiber. |
| Rough cotton, paper towels, or a dirty cloth | Fibers, grit, and trapped particles increase abrasion. | Fresh, soft eyeglass or microfiber cloth. |
| Spraying any liquid directly on the player | Liquid can enter seams, buttons, jacks, or display edges. | Apply an approved cleaner to a cloth away from the device. |
| High-force compressed air at close range | It can drive particles into openings or move debris across the finish. | Manual blower or controlled, indirect airflow. |
Exterior plating and electrical contacts are different jobs
A gold-plated chassis needs minimal-contact cosmetic care. A detachable gold-plated plug or jack is an electrical-contact problem. Crackling, intermittent audio, or a channel that cuts out can result from dirt, oxidation, a loose connection, a damaged cable, or a failing jack. Cleaning the visible housing will not fix those faults.
First isolate the source of crackling
- Turn the player off and disconnect the plug.
- Try a known-good cable or headphones, if available.
- Test the same cable and headphones on another source.
- Check whether the noise changes when the plug is gently moved. Do not twist or force it.
- Inspect the plug and jack under good light for dirt, discoloration, bent parts, or mechanical looseness.
If the noise follows the cable, replace or repair the cable. If it occurs with multiple known-good cables and the jack feels loose, the problem may require service rather than cleaner.
Clean a detachable plated plug conservatively
A specialist headphone-care guide describes isopropyl alcohol for surface grime and CAIG DeoxIT Gold for plated contacts when oxidation contributes to crackling, while warning against abrasive erasers and direct spraying. Treat that as conditional connector-care guidance, not permission to use those products on the player’s exterior.

- Check the cable and product documentation for contact-cleaner compatibility.
- Apply a tiny amount to a cloth or applicator intended for electrical contacts; never spray into the player’s jack.
- Wipe only the accessible metal contact surface.
- Allow the contact to dry completely according to the product instructions.
- Reconnect and test at low volume.
Do not put contact cleaner inside the player unless the manufacturer explicitly authorizes it. Do not use an abrasive eraser to brighten a plated plug: removing oxidation by removing plating is not a repair.

When not to clean the jack yourself
- The jack is loose, rotates, or moves inside the housing.
- The player has liquid intrusion, visible corrosion, or a burnt smell.
- Crackling remains after testing a known-good cable and compatible contact-care procedure.
- The manual prohibits user cleaning or the jack is recessed beyond safe access.
In those cases, stop inserting tools or liquid and use the manufacturer’s service route.
Choose the least aggressive method for the actual problem
| Observed problem | Contact level | Chemical approach | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose dust on the housing | None | None | Manual blower or controlled air, directed away from openings. |
| Fingerprints or light smudges | Low | None | Clean, dry microfiber or eyeglass cloth with light passes. |
| Dried dirt on an approved exterior area | Low | Mild detergent only if the model manual allows it | Slightly damp cloth, never a wet player; dry immediately. |
| Crackling from a detachable plated plug | Contact limited to the plug | Compatible contact cleaner may be used conditionally | Isolate the fault, clean the accessible plug contact only, and never spray the jack. |
| Actual scratch, worn plating, loose jack, or corrosion inside the unit | Do not increase contact | Do not experiment with solvents | Document the condition and seek manufacturer service. |
Protect the finish between cleanings
Handle by clean edges
Skin oils create smudges that invite repeated wiping. Handle the player with clean, dry hands and avoid sliding fingers over the plated face. When setting it down, lower it onto the soft mat rather than dragging it across a table.
Keep accessories from rubbing the housing
Disconnect cables before moving the player. Store plugs, adapters, and memory cards so their metal edges cannot scrape the chassis. Do not place the player in a pocket or case with coins, keys, grit, or unprotected connectors.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a clean storage surface
A soft pouch or lined compartment can reduce incidental contact, but it is not a substitute for cleaning the pouch itself. Dust in a case can act like abrasive powder. Keep the player away from spills, solvent vapors, and high-dust work areas.
Do not set an arbitrary polishing schedule
No authoritative cleaning interval, plating-thickness figure, or scratch-resistance number is established for these models. Clean when contamination is visible or affects handling, not on a calendar. Frequent dry wiping can cause more wear than leaving an undisturbed, clean surface alone.
Model-specific limits matter
Manufacturer instructions control when they are more specific than general audio-care advice. Sony’s guidance is unusually clear for its gold-plated models: use a soft cloth, protect the tabletop with a soft cloth, keep water out, and avoid alcohol, naphtha, and paint thinner. Other manufacturers may specify different materials, coatings, or service procedures.
Before using any liquid, identify the exact model and read its cleaning and warranty sections. Check whether the manual distinguishes the plated chassis from connector contacts, and whether it names a detergent or prohibits user access to the jack. If the manual conflicts with a generic cleaning article, follow the manual for that model.
A quick pre-cleaning and post-cleaning checklist
Before cleaning
- Player powered off and disconnected.
- Soft, clean tabletop covering in place.
- Fresh microfiber or eyeglass cloth available.
- Loose dust removed with air.
- Exact manual checked for detergent and solvent restrictions.
- Openings, seams, buttons, jacks, and display edges identified.
After cleaning
- No visible moisture remains.
- No cleaner has entered an opening.
- Plated areas were not polished aggressively.
- Any crackling was tested separately from cosmetic cleaning.
- Player is completely dry before reconnecting or powering on.
What to remember
Use air before contact, a clean soft lens cloth for the exterior, and only a barely damp cloth with mild detergent when the model manual allows it. Keep liquids out of the player and never spray directly onto it. Sony’s gold-plated Walkman guidance explicitly prohibits alcohol, naphtha, and paint thinner on the player surface. Treat a crackling detachable plug as a separate electrical-contact issue, and use contact products only on the accessible contact when compatibility is established.
