Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAct as if the highest-risk secret may be exposed until you can rule it out. Stop signing transactions, do not enter your recovery phrase anywhere, inspect the wallet’s official history, and separate the wallet investigation from Apple Account and iPhone security. If a self-custodial recovery phrase or private key may have been copied, create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase and move any remaining assets only when the chain and wallet guidance indicate it is safe. An app-password change, phone reset, or hardware wallet cannot make an exposed phrase safe.
Start with a calm, evidence-based triage
A warning, pop-up, failed transaction, or suspicious message does not by itself prove that your wallet was drained or that iOS was exploited. Several different incidents can look similar but require different controls. Treat the situation as urgent, avoid irreversible mistakes, and use only the wallet provider’s official app or website.

- Stop interacting with the suspicious prompt. Do not approve an unfamiliar transaction to “verify” your wallet. Do not type, photograph, paste, or send a recovery phrase or private key into a website, message, pop-up, support chat, form, or screen-share session.
- Disconnect from the suspected dapp or page. Close the tab or app session and remove bookmarks that lead to it. Reach support through a bookmark or address you obtained independently from the wallet provider’s official site, not through an incoming message.
- Preserve evidence without exposing secrets. Save transaction IDs, wallet addresses, dates, times, dapp names, screenshots, and messages. Crop or redact recovery phrases, private keys, wallet passwords, device passcodes, Apple verification codes, and QR codes.
- Use a trusted device for recovery. If you suspect the iPhone itself is controlled by someone else, do not create a replacement wallet or enter credentials on that phone until you have secured a trusted device.
Blockchain transactions that have confirmed generally cannot be reversed by a wallet company. A support agent cannot promise to “unlock” or retrieve funds by remote control. Your goal is to prevent further loss, preserve evidence, and move control to a genuinely new secret where appropriate.

| Possible exposure | What it can allow | First control | Can completed transfers be reversed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery phrase or private key disclosed | Control of the accounts derived from that secret, including the ability to sign transactions | Create a new wallet with a fresh phrase and transfer remaining assets when safe; discontinue the old wallet | Wallet support cannot generally reverse confirmed blockchain transfers |
| Unauthorized transaction signed | The specific transfer or contract interaction recorded on-chain | Document the transaction, stop further signing, and follow the wallet and chain’s incident guidance | Usually no once confirmed |
| Unwanted token approval | A decentralized application may move the approved token and amount under the permission’s rules | Review and revoke the approval through the wallet’s official guidance and a reputable chain-specific interface | Revocation stops future use of that permission; it does not undo a completed transfer |
| Apple Account or iPhone access | Possible access to account settings, messages, email, authentication prompts, or an unlocked device | Secure the Apple Account, review devices and security details, and use Lost Mode if the phone is missing | Securing Apple access does not reverse a blockchain transaction |
These categories can overlap. For example, a malicious dapp may obtain an approval without learning your recovery phrase, while a stolen phrase can put every account derived from it at risk even if no unauthorized transaction is visible yet.
If your recovery phrase or private key may be exposed
A self-custodial recovery phrase is the master secret for the accounts it derives. Anyone who obtains it can control those accounts. Changing the wallet app’s password, deleting the app, or creating another account from the same phrase does not remove that risk.
Create a genuinely new wallet
- On a trusted device, open the wallet provider’s official app or follow its official recovery instructions.
- Create a new wallet rather than importing the suspected phrase. Confirm that the app generates a new recovery phrase; do not choose an option that restores the old phrase.
- Write the new phrase offline using the provider’s recommended method. Never store it in a screenshot, cloud note, email draft, chat, password field, or untrusted computer.
- Verify the new receiving address on the trusted device. For valuable assets, consider a small test transfer only if fees and the chain make that practical.
- Move remaining assets from the old wallet only after checking the chain, token, network, fees, and destination. Follow the wallet provider’s current instructions for the specific asset.
- After moving what can be moved, stop using the old wallet and every account associated with the compromised phrase.
MetaMask’s official guidance specifically warns against adding gas to an account when an automated sweeper may be watching it. A sweeper can use newly added funds to pay fees and drain them immediately. If a transfer fails repeatedly or funds disappear as soon as gas arrives, stop sending more and contact the wallet provider through its official support route.

Do not make the common “same phrase” mistake
Most self-custodial wallets can derive multiple accounts from one phrase. Creating account two, three, or ten from an exposed phrase does not create independent security. The attacker who has the phrase can derive those accounts as well. The replacement must begin with a newly generated phrase, not another account under the old one.
Do not uninstall before confirming access
Uninstalling a mobile wallet can remove local access. If you do not have the legitimate recovery method, deleting the app may leave you unable to reach your funds. First verify the phrase or other official recovery method on a trusted setup, and read the wallet provider’s instructions before resetting or reinstalling anything.

Understand the limits of recovery
Self-custodial wallet providers do not hold your private key and normally cannot reverse a confirmed transaction. They may explain the transaction, help you identify a malicious approval, or provide steps for creating a new wallet, but they cannot guarantee that stolen assets can be recovered. Report the incident with transaction IDs and addresses, and avoid anyone who claims a payment will guarantee a refund.
If you see an unauthorized transaction
Open the official wallet app and record the exact transaction details before taking other actions. Check whether the transaction was sent from your address, which contract or recipient received it, what token and amount were involved, and whether you recognize the dapp or device session. A notification can be delayed or misleading; the chain record is the authoritative record of what was confirmed.
- If the transaction is pending, do not sign additional requests until you understand the wallet’s replacement or cancellation procedure for that chain.
- If it is confirmed and the recovery phrase may be exposed, prioritize moving any assets that remain to a fresh wallet, subject to sweeper and fee risks.
- If only one interaction is unfamiliar and the phrase was never disclosed, investigate approvals and connected dapps rather than assuming the master secret is compromised.
- If the transaction came from an exchange or custodial account, use that service’s account-compromise and withdrawal-freeze process instead of applying self-custody instructions blindly.
Keep the transaction hash, sender and recipient addresses, network, token contract, amount, and timestamp together in your incident notes. Never publish your recovery phrase or private key while asking for help.
If a token approval or dapp permission is the suspected problem
A token approval is a permission recorded on a blockchain. It can allow a decentralized application or contract to access and move a specified token and amount from your address. Signing an approval is different from revealing the recovery phrase, but an unwanted approval can still enable later transfers.
Review and revoke carefully
- Use the wallet provider’s official documentation to identify the approval-management path for your wallet and network.
- Use a reputable, chain-specific approval interface that you reached independently. There is no single revocation tool that covers every chain and wallet.
- Match each permission to a dapp you recognize, the token involved, the approved amount, and the spender address. Treat an unfamiliar or unlimited approval as high risk.
- Revoke permissions you do not need, then verify the revocation transaction on-chain. Revocation itself requires a network fee and a transaction signature.
Revoking an approval prevents future use of that permission under the chain’s rules; it does not roll back transfers already completed. It also does not protect a wallet whose recovery phrase has been copied. If the phrase may be exposed, follow the new-wallet process even after cleaning up approvals.

Secure the Apple Account and the iPhone separately
Wallet security and Apple security are related but distinct. Someone who gains Apple Account access, controls your email or phone number, or holds an unlocked iPhone may be able to interfere with authentication and communications. Securing Apple access does not replace creating a new wallet when the wallet secret is exposed, and creating a new wallet does not secure a stolen Apple Account.

Apple Account checklist
- Change the Apple Account password to a strong, unique password that you do not use elsewhere.
- Review account and security information and correct anything you do not recognize.
- Open the device list and remove devices you do not own or no longer control.
- Confirm that you still control every associated email address and phone number. Check for unexpected forwarding or changes that could redirect account-recovery messages.
- Review sign-in activity, trusted numbers, and authentication settings. Do not approve an unfamiliar sign-in prompt.
- If you cannot sign in, use Apple’s official account-recovery process rather than a person who contacts you offering paid recovery.
Apple advises treating unexpected requests for personal information or money as suspicious. Its support guidance states: “If you’re suspicious about an unexpected message, call, or request for personal information, such as your email address, phone number, password, security code, or money, it’s safer to presume that it’s a scam — contact that company directly if you need to.”
Use Stolen Device Protection when it fits the situation
Apple’s Stolen Device Protection adds biometric checks for selected sensitive actions and a security delay for some account or device changes. Apple says the feature requires iOS 17.3 or later and must be enabled before the iPhone is lost or stolen. It can add protection when someone has the phone and knows its passcode, but it is not a retroactive cure for a phrase that was already exposed and cannot undo a confirmed blockchain transfer.
If the iPhone is lost or stolen
- Mark the iPhone as lost promptly in Find My or through iCloud.com/find.
- Use the contact information shown by Lost Mode only if you are comfortable sharing it; do not follow links in unsolicited “we found your phone” messages.
- If remote erase is necessary, follow Apple’s official procedure.
- After remote erase, do not remove the iPhone from Find My. Apple says removing it also removes Activation Lock, making the device easier for someone else to activate.
If the missing phone contained a self-custodial wallet, treat the wallet phrase and the device threat as separate investigations. Create a new wallet on a trusted device if the phrase may have been accessible, even if the iPhone is later recovered.

People who lose crypto often receive a second wave of attacks from fake support agents, “blockchain investigators,” or strangers claiming they can reverse a transaction. No legitimate helper needs your recovery phrase, private key, wallet password, iPhone passcode, Apple verification code, or remote-control access to your phone.

- Never send a recovery phrase or private key, even one word at a time or through a supposedly encrypted form.
- Never pay an incoming contact who promises guaranteed recovery or asks you to send a “verification” transaction.
- Do not trust a phone number, social-media account, or support chat merely because it uses a wallet’s logo.
- Navigate to the provider’s official website or app yourself and start the support conversation there.
- Expect pressure tactics: urgency, threats of account closure, requests to disable security settings, or demands for a code.
Document the incident before deleting messages. Include transaction IDs, addresses, timestamps, screenshots that reveal no secrets, suspicious URLs, dapp names, and the steps you already took. This record helps the wallet provider, exchange, chain-service team, or law-enforcement agency understand what happened without exposing the credentials they need to steal more.
What a hardware wallet can and cannot do
A hardware wallet can keep private keys offline and may be appropriate for higher-value assets as a longer-term custody choice. It is not an incident-response cure. It cannot disinfect a compromised iPhone, reverse theft, or transform an exposed recovery phrase into a safe one.
If the old phrase was exposed, generate a fresh wallet through a trusted hardware-wallet setup or another trusted wallet setup. Do not import the exposed phrase and call the hardware device secure. Before buying or configuring any device, verify compatibility with your blockchain, wallet app, and iPhone, and follow the manufacturer’s current setup instructions. Keep the new phrase offline and reject any request to “activate” it by entering it on a website.
When the account is a custodial exchange account
The recovery-phrase procedure applies to self-custodial wallets. A custodial exchange account normally uses an account password, email address, authenticator, withdrawal controls, and the service’s internal custody system rather than a phrase that you control directly. If that is your situation, immediately change the account password, secure the email account and phone number, revoke unknown sessions, enable the service’s strongest available multi-factor method, and contact the provider through its official support channel to freeze withdrawals or investigate activity. Do not create a new self-custodial wallet unless you understand where the assets are held and how a transfer would work.

A practical decision sequence
Use this order when facts are still unclear:
- Stop signing and sharing. End suspicious sessions and protect all secrets.
- Inspect the evidence. Compare official wallet history and chain records with your own activity.
- Classify the exposure. Decide whether the strongest evidence points to a phrase/key leak, unauthorized signature, token approval, Apple Account access, physical-device access, or a custodial-account compromise.
- Apply the matching control. Fresh wallet for a leaked phrase; approval review for a permission problem; Apple password, device review, and recovery for Apple access; Lost Mode for a missing phone; provider freeze procedures for a custodial account.
- Move only what can be moved safely. Consider network fees, destination accuracy, token support, and the possibility of an automated sweeper before funding or transferring from a suspected compromised address.
- Retire compromised access. Once remaining assets are moved, stop using the old phrase and its derived accounts. Keep your incident record and continue monitoring the new setup.
