You do not need to move your ETH or buy a special device today. Ethereum’s current user guidance says no quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography and that there is nothing users need to do now. The sensible protection plan is to keep your keys secure, understand whether your account’s public key has been exposed, follow official Ethereum and wallet-provider announcements, and migrate only when post-quantum signatures and trustworthy wallet software are actually available.
Quantum resistance is a future protocol transition, not a feature that a hardware wallet, seed-phrase plate, or newly purchased “quantum-safe” product can add to an existing Ethereum account by itself.

What the quantum threat actually is
Most Ethereum externally owned accounts (EOAs) authorize transactions with ECDSA signatures over the secp256k1 elliptic curve. The account address is derived from a hash of the public key, while the private key creates signatures that prove control of the account.
Recommended Free Tools
A sufficiently capable quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could, in principle, derive a private key from an exposed public key. That is the important distinction: the concern is not that quantum computing automatically breaks every address hash or instantly decrypts a wallet backup. The primary user-facing risk is the public-key signature system used to authorize transactions.

Can a quantum computer steal ETH today?
No. Ethereum’s official user guidance states: “No quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography.” No known machine has the capability required to recover Ethereum private keys from on-chain public keys. Estimates about when such a machine might exist are uncertain, so treat the risk as a reason for migration planning rather than a present emergency.
Why public-key exposure matters
When an EOA sends a transaction, its signature allows the public key to be recovered and exposed on-chain. An account that has only received ETH has published its address, which is a hash of the public key, but has not exposed the public key through a spending transaction under the account model described by Ethereum. That gives an unused account an additional layer of protection against the specific public-key attack, not a permanent exemption from migration.
Once a quantum-resistant signature option is supported, Ethereum’s guidance is that all accounts should eventually migrate. An account’s transaction history can affect urgency and attack surface, but it does not settle the long-term policy for dormant accounts.

Ethereum’s current instruction is simple: “For now, there is nothing you need to do.” That does not mean ignoring ordinary wallet security. It means there is no supported quantum-specific migration for users to perform today.
Use this checklist
- Keep your seed phrase and private keys offline. Protect them from phishing, malware, cloud leaks, screenshots, and unauthorized backups. This reduces conventional theft risk; it does not change the account’s signature algorithm.
- Install wallet updates from the wallet provider’s authenticated channels. A future migration will depend on wallet software recognizing the new account and signature formats.
- Follow Ethereum Foundation and wallet-provider announcements. Look for a documented mainnet deployment, supported signature standards, migration instructions, security reviews, and recovery guidance.
- Ignore unsupported “quantum-safe” claims. A product cannot make an existing Ethereum account quantum-resistant merely by storing its current key in a different enclosure.
- Do not send funds pre-emptively to an unverified new address. Moving assets now may expose a new key, create phishing opportunities, and still leave you using the same vulnerable signature family.
- Record whether each account has ever sent a transaction. This is useful context for future migration planning, but it is not a substitute for migrating when Ethereum supports it.
How account exposure changes the risk
| Account state | What is visible on-chain | Quantum-specific implication | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never used | An address hash may be visible if the account has received funds; the public key has not been exposed by a spending transaction under Ethereum’s described EOA model. | Additional protection against a public-key-recovery attack, but not a guarantee of permanent safety. | Keep the account secure and plan to follow the eventual migration guidance. |
| Has received but never sent | The address and balance are visible; the public key remains unexposed through a transaction signature. | Similar additional protection until the account spends or a protocol change alters the relevant assumptions. | Do not move funds solely because of quantum headlines; monitor official instructions. |
| Has sent a transaction | The transaction signature exposes the public key associated with the EOA. | The account is directly relevant to the future public-key attack described for ECDSA. | Use normal key security now and prioritize a supported post-quantum migration when available. |
| Smart-contract account | The contract address and its validation logic are public. The exact exposure depends on the keys and verification code used by that account. | Risk and migration mechanics depend on the contract’s signature scheme and any protocol-level account-abstraction support. | Wait for guidance from the account and wallet providers; do not assume that using a smart contract automatically makes the account quantum-safe. |
What a real Ethereum migration will need to provide
A credible migration is more than generating a second seed phrase. It must change how the account validates spending transactions and provide a safe way to authorize that change. Ethereum’s intended direction is cryptographic agility: accounts should be able to adopt new cryptographic primitives while the network preserves security and decentralization.

Signature support
The network and wallet must support a post-quantum signature scheme and the corresponding transaction verification rules. EIP-8164 discusses native key delegation and ML-DSA, a post-quantum signature scheme, but it is a proposal, not evidence that the feature is deployed or supported by your wallet.
Account-level authorization
Ethereum’s account-abstraction work is intended to let accounts choose verification logic. Smart contract accounts can already put transaction rules in contract code, and ERC-4337 supports smart contract wallets without changing Ethereum’s core protocol. Ethereum’s quantum guidance describes EIP-8141 as a future native account-abstraction direction being considered for signature agility. Neither fact means that every existing EOA is already quantum-safe.
Safe recovery and asset continuity
The migration process must prevent an attacker from substituting a key, replaying an authorization, or trapping assets. It also needs clear recovery instructions if a user loses the old key during the transition. Ethereum’s user guidance indicates that wallet software will guide users through the future transition. That is future guidance, not a universal migration flow available today.
Will you have to move every token and NFT?
Not necessarily. If Ethereum’s migration preserves the account or transfers its control under a supported account-level mechanism, the ETH, ERC-20 tokens, NFTs, and other assets controlled by that account can remain associated with it. The account’s signature security is what changes.
Do not assume this outcome for an unannounced implementation. Some designs may require a transaction to update account validation; others may require a new account address and a transfer. Before approving anything, confirm whether the official instructions say that the same account and asset balances are preserved or whether each asset must be moved.

Questions to check in future instructions
- Does the migration retain the current address and balances?
- Which assets and contract permissions are covered?
- Is the transaction valid on Ethereum mainnet, or only on a testnet?
- What happens to allowances, NFT approvals, staking positions, and multisig ownership?
- Can the old key still authorize transactions after migration, and for how long?
- What is the recovery path if the migration transaction fails?
Is a hardware wallet quantum-safe?
No current consumer hardware product identified by Ethereum’s official material changes an existing account’s on-chain signature scheme. A hardware wallet can keep a private key isolated from many forms of malware and can improve protection against ordinary theft. It cannot turn ECDSA authorization into a post-quantum signature.

They may protect the secret from fire, theft, or data loss, but the cryptographic algorithm remains the one defined by the account and the Ethereum protocol.
A future device could support a post-quantum algorithm, but its usefulness would depend on network support, wallet software, transaction encoding, secure firmware, recovery compatibility, and independent review. The label alone is not evidence.
Ethereum’s broader quantum-readiness work
Wallet signatures are only one part of the problem. Ethereum’s security roadmap identifies four related areas:
- EOA account signatures: the ECDSA-based authorization used by ordinary accounts.
- Validator signatures: consensus participation currently relies on BLS signatures, so validators need a post-quantum path as well.
- Data-availability commitments: KZG commitments used for data availability have their own cryptographic assumptions.
- Zero-knowledge proof systems: some applications use proof systems whose security may also need quantum-resistant replacements or upgrades.
Migrating one wallet addresses that account’s signature risk. It does not complete the changes required for consensus, data availability, or every zero-knowledge application.

Roadmap status and dates
The Ethereum Foundation says it formed a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team in January 2026. Its roadmap describes work on hash-based validator signatures, signature aggregation, and interoperability devnets. It lists EIP-8141 native account abstraction as under consideration for Hegotá and places core post-quantum infrastructure milestones around 2029.
The Foundation’s September 7, 2026 protocol priorities set a December 2029 target for quantum resistance across execution, consensus, and data. This is a target, not a guaranteed release date. The work requires cryptography, client development, research, security review, testing, and broad ecosystem participation, and the roadmap can change.
| Milestone or claim | Status described by Ethereum sources | What it means for a wallet holder |
|---|---|---|
| No quantum computer can break Ethereum today | Current Ethereum user guidance | No emergency action is required. |
| Post-Quantum Security team | Formed January 2026 | Active engineering and research effort, not a user migration feature. |
| Core post-quantum infrastructure | Roadmap milestones around 2029 | Planning horizon only; verify current status before acting. |
| Quantum resistance across execution, consensus, and data | December 2029 target in September 7, 2026 priorities | A broad ecosystem goal, not a promised wallet deadline. |
| EIP-8141 native account abstraction | Under consideration for Hegotá | Potential future signature agility; not deployed universal support. |
| EIP-8164 key delegation and ML-DSA | Proposal | Conceptual design input, not a feature your wallet can necessarily use. |
How to evaluate a future “quantum-safe” wallet claim
When a wallet provider announces support, evaluate the implementation rather than the marketing name.
| Check | What a satisfactory answer should identify |
|---|---|
| Signature standard | The exact post-quantum scheme, parameter set, and standards or Ethereum proposal it implements. |
| Network status | Whether support is live on Ethereum mainnet, limited to a testnet, or dependent on an unreleased protocol upgrade. |
| Account continuity | Whether the same address and assets are retained or a transfer to a new account is required. |
| Security review | Independent audits, open technical documentation, disclosed limitations, and a clear vulnerability-reporting process. |
| Recovery compatibility | How seeds, backups, key rotation, social recovery, multisigs, and lost-device recovery work with the new scheme. |
| Operational cost | Expected signature and transaction size, gas impact, confirmation behavior, and hardware requirements. |
| Provider authenticity | Instructions published through the provider’s authenticated channels, with transaction details you can verify before signing. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a product because it says “quantum-resistant”
Unless the product changes the account’s Ethereum verification method and is supported by the network, it protects custody rather than the signature scheme. Keep ordinary security products for their real benefits, but do not treat them as a quantum migration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Moving funds to a fresh account too early
A new account usually uses the same current signature family. The transfer can also expose another public key and create an opportunity for a fake migration site to steal the funds. Wait for authenticated, protocol-supported instructions.
Best Value
Assuming account abstraction solves the problem automatically
Account abstraction is a mechanism for programmable validation, not a guarantee that every validation rule is post-quantum. Check the actual signature scheme and deployment status.
Treating a dormant account as permanently safe
An account that has never spent has not exposed its public key through a transaction, but it still needs a future migration path. Ethereum has not settled a universal policy for owners who never migrate.
Trusting an exact quantum-computer deadline
Technical papers, including Google Quantum AI’s cryptocurrency analysis, explain the attack surface but do not establish a certain date for a machine capable of attacking Ethereum. Use roadmap dates as planning targets, not countdowns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical decision tree
- Are you worried about an immediate attack? No known quantum computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography today, so focus on phishing, malware, seed theft, and unauthorized signing.
- Has the account ever sent a transaction? If yes, its public key has been exposed under the EOA model and you should monitor migration announcements closely. If no, note the additional protection but do not treat it as a permanent solution.
- Has Ethereum announced a supported post-quantum account format? If not, do not attempt an improvised migration.
- Does your wallet support the announced format on mainnet? If not, do not sign a transaction presented as a mandatory upgrade.
- Do the official instructions explain assets, recovery, fees, and rollback? If any answer is unclear, pause and verify through the wallet provider and Ethereum’s official channels.
- After migration, can you verify the new authorization method? Keep the migration record, test with a small permitted action if instructed, and retain recovery material according to the provider’s documented process.
What remains unsettled
The timing of a capable quantum computer is unknown. The exact post-quantum schemes, transaction formats, fees, wallet interfaces, and migration rules are still being developed. Governance for wallets whose owners never migrate is also open. These uncertainties are why current guidance emphasizes readiness and authenticated updates rather than a consumer product purchase.
