How to Protect an Ethereum Swap from Sandwich Attacks

The most effective way to reduce sandwich-attack risk is to limit what your swap can accept and avoid exposing the transaction in a public mempool when a private or intent-based route is available. Use a narrow slippage tolerance that still lets the trade execute, choose a deeper-liquidity route, check the minimum amount you will receive, and consider private submission. None of these measures guarantees protection: they reduce an attacker’s opportunity and limit the damage if ordering is manipulated.

A sandwich attack is an execution-ordering exploit, not a private-key theft. A searcher sees a pending decentralized-exchange swap, trades immediately before it to move the pool price, lets the victim’s trade execute at the worsened price, then trades after it to capture the reversal. The victim receives a poorer execution and pays more price impact.

What a sandwich attack does to your swap

On a public Ethereum transaction path, pending transactions can be observed before a validator includes them in a block. A searcher looking for profitable ordering identifies a swap large enough to move a pool and submits two transactions around it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Front-run: the searcher buys the asset the victim is trying to buy, pushing the automated-market-maker price upward.
  2. Victim swap: the user’s transaction executes against that shifted price. If the user’s slippage limit permits it, the user receives fewer tokens than expected.
  3. Back-run: after the victim’s trade, the searcher sells into the new price and realizes the spread, less gas and trading costs.

This is transaction-ordering exploitation rather than a wallet compromise. The attacker does not need the seed phrase or signing key and cannot simply transfer unrelated assets from the wallet. The loss is the difference between the intended and actual swap execution, plus the transaction and liquidity fees that still apply. Ethereum.org summarizes the user impact as: “Users who are sandwiched face increased slippage and worse execution.” Ethereum.org’s MEV explanation describes the same buy-before, sell-after pattern.

Sandwiching is only possible when the victim’s transaction can tolerate the manipulated execution. A strict output floor can make the attack unprofitable or cause the swap to revert; a loose floor gives the attacker a larger range in which to extract value.

Set slippage as a safety boundary, not a target

Slippage tolerance is the maximum adverse movement your swap accepts between signing and execution. It is not a promise that the market will fill at that percentage, and it should not be set wider merely to avoid a failed transaction.

How the trade-off works

Setting What it helps with What can go wrong
Narrow, workable tolerance Limits how far execution can move against you and reduces the room available to a sandwich. A legitimate trade can revert if the market moves, the route changes, or the transaction waits too long.
Very restrictive tolerance Creates a tight loss boundary. Frequent failures, especially in volatile markets or shallow pools; a failed swap still consumes gas.
Wide tolerance Makes inclusion more likely when prices move quickly. Allows a larger adverse execution and gives a sandwich attacker more room to push the fill toward your limit.

The available guidance does not establish one safe percentage for every token pair, chain condition, trade size, or route. Start with the smallest tolerance at which a normal trade succeeds. If a swap repeatedly reverts while the quoted market is moving, increase it only enough to address that specific failure, then reassess the route and liquidity instead of defaulting to a broad limit. A large, volatile trade and a small, deep-liquidity trade should not automatically use the same bound.

Check the displayed minimum received

Before signing, expand the swap details and verify the minimum amount you will receive, the quoted price impact, the fee, the route, and the deadline. The minimum-received figure is the practical output floor for a user-facing swap. If the interface shows an unexpectedly low floor relative to the quote, stop and correct the slippage setting.

A safer swap workflow

1. Compare the route before you submit

Look at more than the headline quote. Compare the expected execution price, price impact, pool depth, network fee, route through one or more pools, and the slippage bound. A route with a slightly different fee can be safer if it uses substantially deeper liquidity and therefore needs less price movement to fill your order.

Low-liquidity pools deserve extra caution. Uniswap’s guidance identifies them as attractive MEV targets because a relatively small trade can move their price. Do not select a thin pool solely because its displayed spot price is momentarily better; estimate how your complete order changes that price.

2. Prefer private submission when the option is explicit

A private route keeps the swap from being broadcast to the public mempool, reducing the visibility that public-mempool frontrunners and sandwichers rely on. The protection is about submission and ordering; it does not remove ordinary market risk, bad quotes, malicious tokens, or a compromised wallet.

Uniswap’s October 24, 2025 guide says swap protection in Uniswap Wallet is enabled for Ethereum Mainnet transactions. That is a vendor description of a particular wallet and network scope, not a claim about every wallet, chain, or transaction type. Check the current wallet interface and network before relying on the setting, because product coverage can change. The guide is available at Uniswap’s MEV-protection article.

3. Consider intent-based execution

An intent-based swap expresses what you want—such as selling one asset for at least a specified amount—without publishing the same order for every public-mempool observer to copy. The cited Uniswap description of UniswapX says the swap intent is sent to a private network of fillers. Fillers compete to execute the intent under its conditions, changing the execution path compared with a direct public transaction.

That change can reduce public exposure, but it is not a universal best-price or no-MEV guarantee. You still need to inspect the quote, minimum output, fees, expiration, supported assets, and the network on which the intent is available.

4. Use the tightest tolerance that remains practical

Set the slippage limit after considering volatility, order size, and pool depth. A transaction that sits pending for a long time has more opportunity for the market to move before inclusion. If the quote changes materially, cancel or replace the pending transaction when your wallet supports that action rather than allowing an old, overly broad bound to remain open.

5. Review the transaction you are signing

  • Confirm the token symbols and contract addresses, especially when names are similar.
  • Check the recipient, route, deadline, network, gas estimate, and minimum output.
  • Reject an approval or swap that requests an unrelated spender or an unlimited allowance you did not intend to grant.
  • Do not sign a second transaction merely because the first is pending; determine whether it replaces the original or creates an additional trade.

6. Treat a failed swap as a diagnostic signal

A revert means the transaction did not complete, although the network may still charge gas. First verify that the market has not moved beyond your bound and that the pool has sufficient liquidity. If the route is otherwise sound, make a small, deliberate adjustment or wait for calmer conditions. Do not solve repeated failures by setting an extremely wide tolerance without checking why the quote is moving.

Public, private, and intent-based execution compared

Execution path Visibility before inclusion Potential advantage Trade-offs to check
Public transaction Broadcast to the public mempool. Broad wallet and route compatibility; straightforward on-chain settlement. Searchers can observe and reorder around it. Slippage and pool depth become especially important.
Private transaction routing Sent through a private path instead of the public mempool. Reduces exposure to public-mempool frontrunners and sandwichers. Availability depends on the wallet, network, and transaction type. Verify the route is actually private and inspect normal quote and fee risks.
Intent-based execution Intent is delivered to a private network of fillers rather than exposed as the same public swap request. Can alter who competes to execute the trade and reduce public visibility. Filler availability, supported assets, expiration, fees, and final execution conditions vary. It is a mitigation, not a guarantee.

There is no controlled performance comparison in the cited material that proves one provider or path always produces a better fill. Evaluate the five dimensions together: submission privacy, execution model, pool depth and expected price impact, the slippage bound, and route fees.

Why pool depth and price impact matter

Automated market makers price trades from the assets held in a pool. When your order is large relative to those reserves, each unit you buy or sell moves the marginal price farther. A searcher can exploit that movement more easily, and your own price impact can dominate the quoted fee.

When otherwise suitable routes are available, favor the deeper-liquidity pool or split route that shows lower expected price impact. Confirm that the route is genuine and that the displayed amount includes all pool, protocol, and network fees. A multi-hop route may access more liquidity but can add fees and additional points of failure; a single thin pool may look simpler while producing worse execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare routes at the size you actually intend to trade. A pool that is deep enough for a small swap may be shallow for a large one. Re-quoting immediately before signing helps account for current reserves, but it does not prevent a price change between signing and inclusion.

Guidance for developers integrating swaps

A contract that accepts any output amount is exposing its users to avoidable loss. Uniswap’s developer documentation states that swap integrations should enforce a slippage limit with amountOutMinimum or use an on-chain price oracle. It warns: “Setting this to zero makes your contract vulnerable to sandwich attacks and price manipulation.” See the Uniswap Developers Trading Overview.

Enforce a meaningful minimum output

Compute the minimum acceptable output from a fresh quote, the caller’s chosen tolerance, and the intended route, then pass that value to the swap call. Do not hard-code zero, an arbitrary tiny value, or a stale number copied from a previous block. A minimum that is too high causes legitimate reverts; one that is too low provides little protection.

The calculation is only an illustration. Production code must account for integer rounding, token decimals, fee tiers, multi-hop paths, deadlines, and the exact router interface. Validate the quote source and do not let an untrusted caller silently replace the protection parameters.

Use an oracle when the application needs a reference price

For protocols that cannot rely solely on a user-supplied quote, an on-chain oracle can provide a reference against which to bound execution. Oracle design introduces its own requirements: freshness, manipulation resistance, liquidity assumptions, decimal handling, and behavior during outages. A price bound is useful only if the reference itself is trustworthy for the asset and market being traded.

Test adverse ordering and stale quotes

  • Simulate a reserve change between quote and execution.
  • Verify that output below the minimum reverts without transferring the user’s input.
  • Test expired deadlines and replacement transactions.
  • Check tokens with fee-on-transfer, rebasing, or non-standard return behavior if your route supports them.
  • Emit enough event data to investigate the quoted output, minimum output, route, and actual output after execution.

What ERC-8377 proposes

ERC-8377, “Reference-Relative Slippage Bounds,” proposes an execution-time policy rather than a fixed output number alone. The caller supplies a slippage policy, a quote oracle, and a maximum deviation; the contract reads a reference price at execution and derives the acceptable output floor from that reference.

This design can keep a bound aligned with a current reference instead of leaving a stale absolute minimum in a long-lived transaction. The proposal describes shrinking the band available for extraction, not eliminating MEV. It is an ERC proposal, and the cited document does not establish broad deployment or universal wallet and router support. Treat it as an emerging design to evaluate, not as a feature you can assume exists in a production swap.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The swap reverts repeatedly

Check whether the quoted price is moving, the pool is shallow, the deadline is too short, or the route has become unavailable. Re-quote and compare a deeper route before changing slippage. If a small increase is necessary, make it deliberately and verify the new minimum output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The swap succeeds but the amount seems unexpectedly low

Compare the transaction’s actual output with the minimum output you approved, then inspect the route, pool reserves, fee tier, and price impact on a block explorer. A public transaction may have been reordered, but poor liquidity, a rapidly moving market, or token-specific transfer behavior can also explain the result. Do not infer a sandwich solely from a lower-than-expected fill.

The wallet says protection is enabled, but the transaction was public

Confirm the selected network and the exact submission method. A wallet feature may cover Ethereum Mainnet while you are using another network or a transaction type outside its scope. Review the wallet’s current documentation and the transaction propagation details before assuming private routing was used.

The quote is attractive but the route has little liquidity

Recheck the amount, price impact, and pool reserves at your trade size. Compare a deeper pool or split route, including its additional fees. A better headline rate is not better execution if your order moves the pool substantially.

You approved a zero minimum in a contract integration

Stop using that integration until the contract or calling code enforces an appropriate output floor or oracle-based bound. A later manual adjustment cannot protect a transaction that already executed without a limit; the fix must be applied to the integration path itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical checklist before signing

  • Is the route on the intended Ethereum network and using the correct token contracts?
  • Does the pool or split route have enough liquidity for this order size?
  • Have you compared expected price impact, fees, and the final amount received?
  • Is the slippage tolerance the narrowest value that has a reasonable chance of execution?
  • Does the interface show a meaningful minimum output and a sensible deadline?
  • Can you use a verified private route or intent-based path for this wallet and network?
  • Are you signing only the approval and swap you intended, with the expected spender?
  • If the transaction fails, will you diagnose the cause instead of automatically widening the limit?

What protection can and cannot do

Private routing reduces public-mempool visibility; intent-based execution changes how a trade is presented to potential executors; a minimum output limits the damage a contract can accept; and deeper liquidity reduces the price movement caused by your own order. These controls address different parts of the risk and work best together.

They do not guarantee a particular price, prevent every form of MEV, eliminate ordinary volatility, or compensate for a malicious token contract and a compromised signing device. Uniswap’s guidance puts the limitation plainly: “While no single tactic can get rid of malicious MEV forever, these tools and settings help you keep more value in your swaps.” Use that principle when deciding whether a convenient route is worth its additional exposure.
