The most effective protection is a fitted, non-abrasive suitcase cover for check-in travel and storage, combined with gentle cleaning and complete drying after every trip. Remove loose grit before wiping, keep the case away from sharp or rough surfaces, rinse off salt or sand, and avoid chemicals or tools that can damage the finish. Anodizing makes aluminum more resistant to corrosion, but it cannot prevent every scratch or dent from normal travel.
What aluminum luggage can—and cannot—resist
Aluminum luggage is strong, but its visible surface is not immune to handling damage. Samsonite describes aluminum cases as prone to dents, dings, and scratches over time. Zero Halliburton likewise notes that cosmetic marks do not reduce the case’s protective function. A mark on the shell is therefore not automatically a structural failure.

Separate appearance from function when inspecting damage. A shallow scuff or small dent may be cosmetic, while a distorted frame, split seam, jammed latch, loose wheel, or handle that no longer locks can compromise use. Cleaning can remove dirt and transfer marks; it cannot restore metal that has been gouged or permanently deformed.
Quick protection decisions
- Checking the bag: Fit a purpose-made cover with a soft, non-abrasive interior before going to the airport.
- Cleaning: Lift off dry grit first, then use clean water and a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Add only a little mild soap for persistent soil.
- Salt or sand exposure: Rinse affected parts with fresh water when the manufacturer allows it, then dry immediately and thoroughly.
- A new scratch: Stop aggressive rubbing. Determine whether it is removable transfer or a mark through the finish.
- A dent: Check frame alignment, latches, lock, handle, and wheels. Cosmetic damage can be left alone; functional damage belongs with an authorized repair service.
The best preventive measure: a properly fitted cover
A stretch cover is the clearest preventive purchase for checked luggage. FORTE’s care guidance says to use its scratch-protection cover when checking in, and Xiaomi recommends a protective cover particularly for check-in travel. A cover takes the abrasion from conveyor belts, cargo holds, and contact with other bags instead of allowing that friction to reach the shell.

A cover is not impact armor. It cannot guarantee protection from a heavy blow or prevent a dent caused by pressure on a corner. Its main value is reducing routine scuffing, contact with dirty handling surfaces, and abrasion while the bag is moved or stored.
Choose a cover that will not create new problems
- Exact fit: Match the cover to the suitcase’s dimensions and model shape. Excess fabric can catch on equipment; a loose cover can shift and rub grit against the finish.
- Soft interior: Look for a lining or fabric that will not abrade anodized aluminum. A rough inner seam can mark the case even when the outside of the cover looks protective.
- Openings for hardware: Wheels, telescoping handles, carry handles, latches, and TSA locks should remain accessible without removing the cover.
- Secure closure: Zippers, elastic edges, or buckle straps should hold the cover in place through handling but should not press hard enough to distort the frame.
- Washability: A cover that can be washed and dried fully is easier to keep free of sand, salt, and oily residue.
- Intended use: Some covers are designed for airport check-in; others are mainly dust covers for storage. Do not assume a thin storage cover will withstand baggage handling.
Fit the cover before you reach the airport
- Put the empty suitcase on a clean surface and check that the cover’s seams line up with the case corners.
- Extend and retract the handle, spin each wheel, open every latch, and test the lock with the cover installed.
- Confirm that no strap, zipper, or edge drags on a wheel or blocks a handle release button.
- Remove the cover if it is damp or visibly gritty; wash and dry it before the next use.
Prepare the case before travel
Most avoidable scratches begin when a hard particle is dragged across the shell. Before packing, place the suitcase on a clean mat, table, or other smooth surface rather than unfinished wood, rough concrete, or a metal edge.
- Inspect corner guards, frame edges, wheel housings, and the underside for trapped grit.
- Remove sand, dust, and small stones with a soft brush or by lifting them away; do not grind them into the metal with a cloth.
- Keep the case clear of sharp tools, exposed fasteners, and abrasive cargo inside vehicles or storage rooms.
- Do not apply a solvent, polish, waterproof spray, or protective coating unless the suitcase manufacturer specifically approves it. Globe-Trotter, for example, warns against solvents and waterproof sprays.
- Close the case fully and avoid overpacking. Excess internal pressure can make a frame or latch harder to close and may worsen an impact dent.
Clean aluminum luggage without scratching it
Portar, FORTE, RIMOWA, and Zero Halliburton all favor a soft damp cloth or non-abrasive sponge and mild cleaning when necessary. The order matters: remove loose particles first, use as little cleaner as will do the job, and dry every part afterward.

After-trip cleaning routine
- Empty and inspect: Remove all contents, then examine the shell, frame, corners, wheel areas, handle channels, and latch surfaces under good light.
- Lift off dry grit: Shake or brush away sand and dust without rubbing. A microfiber cloth is gentle only after loose particles are gone.
- Wipe with clean water: Dampen a clean microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Work in small sections with light pressure.
- Add mild soap only for persistent soil: Use a small amount of mild soap diluted in water. Do not use a concentrated household cleaner directly on the aluminum.
- Rinse residue away: Follow the wipe with a separate cloth dampened with clean water so soap film is not left on the finish.
- Dry completely: Dry the shell, frame, hardware, wheel housings, and handle channels with a fresh soft cloth. Leave the case open until hidden moisture has evaporated.
- Recheck moving parts: Operate the wheels, handle, latches, and lock after cleaning. Dirt or moisture trapped in these areas can cause functional trouble even when the shell looks clean.
When sand or salt is involved
Salt residue and beach sand deserve special attention because they can remain in seams and moving parts. Rinse affected components with fresh water when the manufacturer permits it, then dry them immediately and thoroughly. Do not seal a damp, salty case inside a cover or closet.
Match the method to the problem
| Condition | First step | Stop or escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Dust, fingerprints, or ordinary soil | Clean water and a soft microfiber cloth. | Residue remains after a gentle second pass. |
| Persistent grime | A small amount of diluted mild soap, followed by a clean-water wipe. | The finish changes, the area becomes sticky, or the cleaner is not manufacturer-approved. |
| Transfer from another surface | Light water wiping after removing loose grit. | Rubbing enlarges or brightens the mark. |
| Scratch through the finish | Document it and inspect function; do not polish aggressively. | The frame, closure, handle, lock, or wheel is affected. |
| Salt or moisture residue | Fresh-water rinse where permitted, then immediate drying. | Residue remains in seams or corrosion is visible. |
Products and tools to avoid
Harsh chemicals and abrasive tools can dull, stain, or remove the finish. The FAA’s AC 43-4B explains that anodizing is a common treatment for aluminum alloy surfaces and warns that severe abrasives can break the protective film.

| Avoid | Why it is risky | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Steel wool, steel wire brushes, copper brushes, and scouring pads | They can cut through the finish and leave directional scratches. | Clean microfiber or a non-abrasive sponge. |
| Abrasive powders and polishing compounds | They remove material and may change the sheen around the treated area. | Water first, followed by a small amount of mild soap if needed. |
| Bleach, acetone, nail-polish remover, aggressive solvents, and petroleum distillates | They may discolor, soften, or attack coatings, plastics, seals, and adhesives. | A manufacturer-approved mild cleaner. |
| Window cleaner, disinfectants, and vinegar-based cleaners | Their additives or acidity may be incompatible with the finish or leave residue. | Clean water and a gentle cloth. |
| Unapproved waterproof sprays | They can leave a film, react with the finish, or interfere with later repairs. | A fitted physical cover for handling and storage. |
Manufacturer instructions take precedence if they differ from this general routine. Test any approved product on a concealed area first, use the smallest practical amount, and rinse away residue if the instructions require it.
Understand anodizing and corrosion protection
Anodizing does not add an ordinary paint layer. The FAA describes it as increasing the thickness and density of aluminum’s natural oxide film. That treated surface helps the metal resist corrosion, but severe abrasion can break the film and expose less-protected material.
Corrosion risk rises when salt, moisture, and residue remain in contact with the case for long periods. After coastal travel, wet-weather handling, or contact with de-icing residue, rinse where appropriate, dry immediately, and store the suitcase in a ventilated, low-humidity location. Avoid wrapping a damp case tightly in plastic, which can retain moisture against seams and hardware.
Pay particular attention to frame channels, latch recesses, wheel housings, handle tracks, and the underside. These areas can hold moisture or grit after the broad shell appears dry. Open the case, extend the handle, and move the wheels while drying so cloth reaches hidden surfaces without forcing dirt deeper into the mechanisms.
How to deal with scratches
Surface dirt or transfer marks
Start with clean water and a soft cloth. If the mark lifts without increasing the affected area, continue gently and stop once the transfer is gone. Do not scrub harder simply because the first pass was slow.

Light scuffs
Use the same gentle method and stop if rubbing makes the mark wider, brighter, or more visible. A scuff that remains after safe cleaning is usually a finish mark, not removable dirt. Abrasive polishing can create a larger patch with a different sheen.

A scratch that catches a fingernail or reveals a different layer cannot be cleaned away. Do not chase it with sandpaper, steel wool, or an unapproved metal polish. Photograph the area, check whether the frame and closure still align, and ask the manufacturer or an authorized repairer whether a component replacement or professional repair is possible.
How to deal with dents
Inspect the case on a flat surface and check the frame line around the dent. Open and close the suitcase, engage every latch, extend the handle, and spin the wheels. If all parts work and the shell remains closed and aligned, the damage may be cosmetic. RIMOWA states that deep dents and scratches cannot be removed and describes them as part of a case’s individual patina.
Do not hammer, heat, pry, or force an aluminum shell back into shape at home. Those actions can crack a corner, distort the frame, weaken a rivet, or make a lock unsafe. Functional damage warrants the brand’s authorized repair channel rather than cosmetic experimentation.
Storage between trips
- Clean the case and remove all grit, salt, and residue.
- Dry the shell, frame, hardware, wheels, and handle channels completely.
- Store it upright in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from prolonged direct heat and sunlight.
- Leave clearance from walls and other luggage so the surfaces do not rub.
- Use a dust bag or clean cloth cover that is dry and breathable.
- Keep heavy objects off the shell and avoid stacking luggage where a corner or wheel presses into the aluminum.
Decide whether a cover is worth it for checked luggage
For a case that will be checked regularly, a cover is worthwhile when its fit and construction meet the criteria below. It cannot prevent a major impact dent, but it reduces routine abrasion and keeps grime off the shell.

Inspection and repair checklist
Use this checklist after every trip, especially when the suitcase has been checked:
- Shell: new scratches, gouges, dents, or discoloration.
- Frame: gaps, bends, separation, or a lid that no longer sits evenly.
- Latches and lock: smooth operation and secure closure.
- Handle: extends, retracts, and locks without sticking.
- Wheels: spin freely, track straight, and remain firmly attached.
- Seams and corners: no sharp deformation or exposed fasteners.
- Moisture: no water or salt residue inside channels, pockets, or under the frame.
Record photographs of significant new damage before attempting cleaning. If a safety or closure component is affected, stop using the case until the manufacturer or an authorized repair service evaluates it.

Common mistakes that make damage worse
- Wiping a dusty shell immediately and dragging grit across it.
- Using a household spray because it is labeled for glass, stainless steel, or general disinfection.
- Polishing one scratch aggressively and creating a larger area with a different gloss.
- Leaving a damp suitcase closed under a cover.
- Forcing a dent outward with tools instead of checking whether the case still functions.
- Choosing a cover that blocks locks or rubs against wheel housings.
- Assuming anodizing makes the case scratch-proof or corrosion-proof.
What protection can realistically achieve
Protection measures reduce avoidable wear; they do not make an aluminum suitcase remain factory-perfect through unlimited travel. A cover addresses surface abrasion, careful cleaning prevents grit and chemicals from damaging the finish, and dry storage limits moisture-related corrosion. Normal dents and scratches can still become part of the case’s appearance, while deep or functional damage requires professional assessment rather than home polishing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a suitcase cover worth using on checked aluminum luggage?
Yes, a fitted cover is the clearest preventive purchase for checked travel. It reduces routine abrasion and grime, provided it has a soft interior, stays secure, and leaves wheels, handles, latches, and locks usable. It cannot guarantee protection from a major impact dent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can I polish scratches out of aluminum luggage?
Deep scratches and scratches through the finish generally cannot be polished away. Abrasive polishing may create a larger area with a different sheen or damage anodizing. Clean only to remove transfer marks, then seek manufacturer or authorized repair advice for deeper damage.
How do I prevent dents in an aluminum suitcase?
A cover helps with abrasion but is not impact armor. Keep the case away from rough or sharp surfaces, avoid heavy objects pressing on the shell during storage, and inspect it after impacts. Do not hammer, heat, pry, or force dents back at home.
What should I do if my suitcase gets wet or salty?
Rinse affected components with fresh water when the manufacturer permits it, remove residue from seams and hardware, and dry immediately and thoroughly. Store the clean case open or ventilated until hidden moisture is gone; never seal a damp case under a cover.
Recommended Free Tools
Does anodizing make aluminum luggage corrosion-proof?
No. Anodizing thickens and densifies aluminum’s natural oxide film, improving corrosion resistance, but severe abrasion can break that film. Prolonged salt or moisture contact can still create problems, especially in seams and hardware.
When should an aluminum suitcase go to a repair service?
Use an authorized repair channel when a dent or scratch affects frame alignment, closure, latches, locks, wheels, or the telescoping handle. Cosmetic marks that leave the case aligned and fully functional can usually be monitored rather than forcibly repaired.
Can I use a waterproof spray or household disinfectant on the shell?
Only if the suitcase manufacturer specifically approves it. Guidance warns against unapproved waterproof sprays, aggressive solvents, disinfectants, bleach, acetone, abrasive cleaners, and similar products that may attack the finish or hardware.
The Bottom Line
Use a soft, well-fitted cover for checked travel, remove grit before wiping, clean with water and a gentle cloth, rinse salt when approved, and dry every seam and moving part. Accept ordinary cosmetic patina, but stop using the case and contact an authorized repairer when damage affects alignment, closure, locks, wheels, or the handle.
