A more durable defense is procedural: match your asset allocation to your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance; check whether holdings are genuinely diversified; reserve enough liquid money for near-term needs; and rebalance only when a pre-decided rule says your mix has drifted. These steps can reduce avoidable concentration and liquidity risks, but no allocation can guarantee a profit or prevent a loss during a geopolitical shock.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes these principles in its Investor.gov education materials. They are general information, not a personalized investment, legal or tax recommendation. Your jurisdiction, tax status, holdings, income security and ability to withstand losses determine whether a particular action is suitable.

What to do first when geopolitical headlines hit
Before trading, separate the news from the portfolio decision. A headline may change prices quickly, but it does not automatically change your retirement date, tuition bill, emergency-fund requirement or ability to tolerate a temporary decline. Write down those personal facts first.
Recommended Free Tools
- List your cash needs by date. Identify expenses due within weeks, the next year and the next several years. Include taxes, rent or mortgage payments, insurance deductibles, tuition and planned withdrawals.
- Record your intended allocation. Note the target percentages for stocks, bonds, cash equivalents and any other assets, plus the acceptable ranges around each target.
- Measure the current portfolio. Use current market values, not the amount originally invested. Include workplace plans, individual accounts, bank deposits and concentrated employer stock so that the total picture is visible.
- Check your capacity for loss. Ask whether a large decline would force you to sell, borrow, change a goal or abandon the plan. That practical capacity is different from how comfortable you feel while markets are calm.
- Choose an action rule. If no allocation band has been breached and no personal circumstance has changed, monitoring may be more appropriate than trading. If a target has drifted materially or a near-term cash need is unfunded, address that specific problem rather than making a broad, headline-driven change.
The SEC cautions investors against rash portfolio changes and market timing. Exiting after a fall can lock in a loss, while a rapid rebound can occur before you decide to buy again. A written process helps prevent an emotional trade from becoming a permanent allocation.

Match asset allocation to the job your money must do
Asset allocation is the division of a portfolio among asset categories such as stocks, bonds and cash. Investor.gov’s reader-facing question is “What is asset allocation?” The answer is personal: the mix should reflect the goal, time horizon and risk tolerance. A short-term need generally warrants less exposure to volatile assets than a long-term goal, but there is no universally correct allocation.
Goal and time horizon
Money needed soon has little time to recover from a price decline. Funding a bill due in three months is a different task from financing retirement decades away. Assign each account or portion of an account a purpose and date; then select assets whose potential fluctuations are compatible with that date. Do not treat a long horizon as permission to ignore liquidity: a long-term investor can still have a near-term withdrawal, job loss or medical expense.
Risk tolerance and risk capacity
Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure losses. Risk capacity is your financial ability to do so without derailing a goal. A questionnaire can measure attitudes, but your withdrawal schedule, debt, emergency reserves and income stability determine capacity. If a geopolitical event would make you sell at an unacceptable loss, the portfolio may carry more risk than you can actually bear, regardless of its historical label.

Write a policy before the next shock
A simple investment policy can state the target mix, permitted ranges, liquidity reserve, review schedule and rebalancing trigger. Include what would count as a genuine change in circumstances, such as a changed retirement date or a new withdrawal obligation. This prevents a temporary news cycle from silently rewriting a long-term plan.

Check whether diversification is real
Diversification spreads investments across asset types and within each type. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states in its “Investor.gov Tips for 2026 – Investor Bulletin” (March 31, 2026): “Diversification means investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio.” Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent a loss.
Review across asset classes
Separate the portfolio into broad categories: equities, fixed income, cash equivalents and any alternatives. Consider how each category could affect your ability to pay upcoming bills and how much of the total loss you could withstand. Stocks, bonds and cash have different risk and return characteristics, but they can all lose value or fail to keep pace with inflation under some conditions.
Review within each category
Look through each fund or managed account to see its sectors, countries, issuers and largest positions. A narrowly focused fund may be diversified inside one theme but still leave the overall portfolio concentrated in that theme. Several funds can also own many of the same securities, creating overlap that is not obvious from the fund names.
Use a holdings worksheet
- List every security and its percentage of the total portfolio.
- Group positions by issuer, sector, country or currency where relevant.
- Mark duplicate holdings across funds and accounts.
- Identify single-stock, employer-stock or region-specific exposure that could dominate the result.
- Compare the totals with the ranges in your written policy.
Do not assume that adding more ticker symbols automatically improves diversification. The relevant question is whether the underlying economic exposures are different enough to reduce concentration.

Protect near-term spending with liquidity
Liquidity is the ability to obtain cash when you need it without accepting an avoidable loss. Keep money for imminent expenses in instruments whose maturity and price behavior fit the date of the expense, rather than relying on a volatile asset to be worth a particular amount on a particular day.
Cash equivalents and Treasury bills
Cash equivalents and short-term Treasury bills can support near-term needs and usually have less short-term price fluctuation than stocks. A Treasury bill matures in one year or less. If you sell a marketable Treasury before maturity, you receive the prevailing market price, which can be above or below the amount you paid. Match the bill’s maturity to the date you expect to use the money and keep a separate reserve for expenses that cannot wait.
The trade-off is purchasing power. Inflation can erode the real value of cash and cash equivalents, even when the account balance does not fall. Liquidity is therefore a purpose-based choice, not a claim that cash is the highest-return asset.

Understand what TIPS can and cannot do
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) adjust their principal with changes in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). Interest is paid on the adjusted principal, so the dollar interest amount can change as the principal changes. At maturity, the U.S. Treasury pays at least the original principal amount. TreasuryDirect currently lists 5-, 10- and 30-year TIPS terms.
Why an investor might consider TIPS
The inflation adjustment can make TIPS relevant when the objective is tied to inflation-sensitive spending and the investor can hold through the chosen maturity. They are one tool for a defined purpose, not a universal hedge for geopolitical risk or every kind of market loss.
Important limits
- The maturity floor does not promise a positive return for someone who sells before maturity.
- Market prices can move as interest rates, inflation expectations and liquidity change.
- Taxes and account location can affect the investor’s result; obtain jurisdiction-specific tax advice before trading.
- Deflation adjustments and the timing of withdrawals can make the path of the investment different from the final maturity payment.
Compare a TIPS purchase with the date and purpose of the money, not with a headline about the latest geopolitical event.
Compare defensive choices by purpose and trade-off
| Choice | Useful question | Evidence-based trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cash equivalents or Treasury bills | Is this money needed soon, and when does the instrument mature? | Can support liquidity and lower short-term price fluctuation; inflation erodes real purchasing power. Treasury bills mature in one year or less, and selling before maturity occurs at the prevailing market price. |
| Diversified stock and bond holdings | Is the portfolio spread across asset types, sectors and underlying holdings? | Broader exposure can reduce concentration risk. Bonds and cash differ from stocks in risk and return behavior, but no mix eliminates loss; narrow funds and overlapping holdings can undermine diversification. |
| TIPS | Is inflation-linked principal relevant to the objective and holding period? | Principal follows CPI-U adjustments and repayment at maturity is at least the original principal; an early sale, market conditions and taxes can change the result. |
| Rebalancing | Has the portfolio moved materially away from the chosen mix? | Restores target weights, but trading can create taxes and fees. A pre-decided review method is preferable to reacting to headlines. |
Rebalance deliberately instead of chasing the news
Rebalancing restores the chosen mix after market movements cause some holdings to become larger or smaller portions of the portfolio. The SEC discusses calendar reviews and threshold-based reviews and says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.

Calendar method
Choose a review interval, such as an annual date, and compare actual weights with targets. A calendar check is easy to administer, but it can trade when no meaningful drift has occurred.
Threshold method
Set a trigger in advance, such as a percentage-point or relative deviation from a target. Trade only when a band is breached. The exact band must fit the portfolio, account taxes and your ability to monitor it; the SEC materials do not prescribe one universal threshold.
A tax-aware rebalancing sequence
- Confirm that the drift is measured across all relevant accounts.
- Direct new contributions, dividends or interest toward underweight categories before selling appreciated assets.
- Where a sale is necessary, compare transaction fees, bid-ask spreads and the tax effect in that account.
- Make the smallest trades that return the portfolio to its permitted range.
- Record the date, prices, weights and reason so the next review is based on the policy rather than emotion.
Trading may create fees or tax consequences. In taxable accounts, a professional can help evaluate gains, losses, holding periods and local rules; retirement accounts have different constraints.
Why headline-driven selling can hurt
Geopolitical news can produce uncertainty, but the direction, duration and market impact are not reliably known from the headline alone. Selling after a decline converts an unrealized loss into a realized one and can leave you out of a recovery. Buying back later requires two correct timing decisions, not one.
Before changing the plan, ask:
- Has a personal goal, time horizon, liquidity need or risk capacity changed?
- Has the portfolio breached a written allocation range?
- Am I reducing a documented concentration, or merely responding to fear?
- What are the transaction costs, tax effects and consequences of being out of the market?
- What specific condition would make me reverse this trade?
If you cannot answer the final question, the proposed trade may be a reaction rather than a policy decision. Turning off price alerts, limiting news checks to a scheduled time and reviewing the written policy with a trusted person can create useful friction.
A practical portfolio-volatility review
For money needed within the next year
- Separate the amount and date from long-term investments.
- Use appropriately liquid cash equivalents or Treasury bills, checking each maturity.
- Account for inflation so the nominal balance is not mistaken for guaranteed purchasing power.
For a long-term goal
- Reconfirm the goal date and acceptable loss before changing the mix.
- Check diversification across and within asset classes, including overlapping funds.
- Rebalance only under the calendar or threshold rule in your policy.
For a concentrated position
- Measure the position as a percentage of the total household portfolio, not just one account.
- Identify employer, sector, country and currency exposure linked to the position.
- Plan any reduction around tax lots, trading costs and a realistic schedule rather than a single news event.
When personalized advice is warranted
General investor education cannot determine a suitable allocation for a particular person. Seek an appropriately qualified financial or tax professional when withdrawals are imminent, taxes are complex, a single holding dominates the portfolio, you are changing a retirement or education plan, or a proposed trade could affect benefits, debt or required distributions. Give the adviser a complete holdings list, account types, cost basis, goal dates, cash needs and constraints; otherwise the recommendation may be based on an incomplete risk picture.
Use a written checklist at each review
- Goals and dates are current.
- Near-term spending is funded without relying on a forced sale.
- Target percentages and permitted ranges are recorded.
- Holdings are checked for issuer, sector, geographic and fund overlap.
- Cash and Treasury-bill maturities match planned withdrawals.
- Any TIPS position is evaluated against its maturity and inflation-related purpose.
- Rebalancing follows the chosen calendar or threshold rule.
- Fees, spreads and tax consequences are estimated before trading.
- The decision is based on a changed circumstance or a written trigger, not a headline alone.
This process cannot forecast which conflict, region or asset class will move next. It can make the portfolio’s risks visible, preserve money needed soon and keep long-term decisions tied to the investor’s own objectives rather than to an unknowable news path.
