How to Protect a Modded Minecraft Server from the BleedingPipe Exploit

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect a modded Minecraft server from BleedingPipe by treating the installed mods—not Forge itself—as the security boundary. First preserve the current files and logs, identify every mod and loader version, update affected projects from their authoritative pages, then add a compatible deserialization filter such as PipeBlocker or an appropriate SerializationIsBad release. Scan the server, launchers, backups, and administrator computers for compromise. If anything looks suspicious, isolate the host, rotate credentials from a clean device, and rebuild rather than trusting an uncertain installation.

The Minecraft Malware Prevention Alliance (MMPA) disclosed BleedingPipe on July 29, 2023, and reported exploitation in the wild. Its central qualification is important: “This is a vulnerability in mods using unsafe deserialization code, not in Forge itself.”

What BleedingPipe is and why it matters

BleedingPipe is a remote-code-execution risk created by Minecraft mods that deserialize untrusted data with Java’s unsafe ObjectInputStream. A malicious object can cause code to run in the Java process handling the data. On a server, that can mean the attacker reaches the machine account running Minecraft, its files, environment variables, panel tools, and any other service that account can access. The MMPA also warned that code running on a server could reach connected clients.

The vulnerable component is an affected mod’s serialization code. Replacing or updating Forge alone does not remove unsafe code shipped inside a mod JAR. The highest-profile exposure involved Forge modpacks for Minecraft 1.7.10 and 1.12.2, but the presence of an affected mod can make other Minecraft versions relevant too. A version number by itself is therefore not a vulnerability determination.

Vanilla, Paper, and Spigot installations are outside the Forge-mod attack path described in the MMPA advisory. That does not make every plugin, proxy, panel, or operating-system component safe; administrators still need to track the software they actually run and its current advisories.

Which installations should be treated as exposed?

Environment How to interpret the BleedingPipe guidance Required action
Forge 1.7.10 or 1.12.2 with third-party mods These versions were the most prominent exposure area, especially when an affected mod is present. Inventory every JAR, update affected projects, deploy a compatible mitigation, and scan for compromise.
Other Forge versions Still potentially exposed if a loaded mod contains the unsafe deserialization path. Do not clear the server solely because its Minecraft version is newer or older; assess the exact mod versions.
Fabric with a relevant mod The exploit is mod-code dependent, not limited by the Forge brand. PipeBlocker lists Fabric support for its supported versions. Check the exact Fabric loader, Minecraft version, and mod set before choosing a defense.
Vanilla, Paper, or Spigot Outside the Forge-mod attack path described by MMPA. Continue normal plugin, server, host, and credential security maintenance; do not install a Forge-only fix blindly.

Do this first: preserve evidence and map the environment

Do not begin by deleting random JARs or rebuilding over the only copy of the server. A clean inventory tells you what must be updated and preserves clues if the host was already compromised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the runtime. Write down the Minecraft version, Forge or Fabric loader version, Java runtime and version, launcher or server wrapper, host operating system, and how the server is started.
  2. Record the complete mod set. Capture every file name and version in the mods directory, including libraries, coremods, and manually copied JARs. A filename that omits a version is not proof that the file is current.
  3. Preserve copies. Make a read-only or otherwise protected copy of the current mods directory, configuration files, world data, startup scripts, crash reports, console logs, and panel logs. Keep the timestamp and do not overwrite the original while investigating.
  4. Map access. List the server account, panel account, SSH users, RCON endpoint, database credentials, backup destinations, Discord integrations, and administrator workstations that can manage the instance.
  5. Record backups separately. Note which backups predate the suspected exposure and where they are stored. A backup made after an attacker obtained write access is not automatically trustworthy.

This baseline also prevents an update from becoming an untraceable change. Updating an entire premade pack can introduce dependency conflicts, so retain the original files until the replacement has been tested.

Update the vulnerable or suspect mods

MMPA specifically named EnderIO, BDLib, and LogisticsPipes in its BleedingPipe guidance and advised updating them to the latest versions on CurseForge. Treat those names as a starting point, not a complete allow-list: any mod using the unsafe pattern can matter, and projects can publish different fixes for different Minecraft branches.

  1. Download each replacement from the mod project’s authoritative distribution page, not an unverified mirror.
  2. Confirm that the file matches the exact Minecraft version, loader, dependency set, and Java requirement used by the pack.
  3. Remove or archive the old JAR so two versions cannot load together. Do not leave a renamed copy in the active mods directory.
  4. Check the server log for dependency errors, duplicate-mod warnings, mixin failures, and startup exceptions after each controlled change.
  5. Run the complete pack in a staging copy before touching production. Join with a test client, load representative worlds, exercise machines and dimensions supplied by the affected mods, and inspect both server and client logs.

MMPA cautions that updating all mods in a premade pack can break compatibility or destabilize the pack. A security update is still necessary, but stage it, keep a rollback copy, and resolve dependency constraints deliberately rather than mixing unrelated versions on the live server.

Add a protocol-level defense with PipeBlocker

PipeBlocker is a mitigation mod that filters ObjectInputStream deserialization. Its project listing describes Forge and Fabric support for server and client environments across many Minecraft versions. That broad matrix is useful only when the release actually matches your loader and game version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to install

  • Choose the PipeBlocker release whose stated Minecraft and loader support exactly matches the instance. “Forge” or “Fabric” alone is not enough; minor game versions and loader generations matter.
  • Install it in a disposable staging copy first. Keep the original server and client pack unchanged until startup, joining, and normal gameplay have passed.
  • For a server, place the mitigation where the server process loads its mods and verify in the startup log that it initialized. A file copied into a client-only directory cannot protect a server process.
  • For clients, use the corresponding client-supported release when the project lists one for that version. Client deployment gives each client process its own filter and is useful when a malicious server or modded connection could target a client.
  • Where the project documents a required server/client pairing, follow that requirement rather than assuming any two releases are interchangeable.

Do you need it on the server, clients, or both?

The server and client are separate Java processes. A server-side installation protects the server process; it does not insert a filter into every player’s computer. A client-side installation protects that client process; it cannot repair an unprotected server. Deploying the supported build on both sides gives the broadest coverage, while the exact pairing and compatibility rules in the project’s release documentation control the final choice. At minimum, protect the server before allowing it back onto a public network.

Validate the mitigation

  1. Start the staged server with the same Java command and memory settings used in production.
  2. Confirm that the mitigation appears in the mod list or startup log and that no class-loading or dependency error is reported.
  3. Connect with a staged client using the same pack revision, then test ordinary login, chunk loading, inventories, machines, dimensions, and server restarts.
  4. Review logs for rejected serialization attempts. A rejection is evidence that the filter acted; it is not proof that every other compromise path is absent.
  5. Promote the tested files only after backups and a rollback plan are ready.

Consider SerializationIsBad for compatible Forge packs

SerializationIsBad is described by Shockbyte as a patcher that can be installed client-side or server-side. Its CurseForge listing identifies it as a Forge coremod aimed at serious vulnerabilities in multiple mods. This approach can suit a Forge pack where the coremod’s release and Java support match the environment, but a coremod changes class-loading behavior and therefore deserves the same staging discipline as any other security patch.

  • Test the full pack, including launchers and client joins, before production deployment.
  • Do not run PipeBlocker and SerializationIsBad together merely because more defenses sounds safer. Check their project documentation and test for conflicts before combining them.

Choose between mitigations using evidence from the actual pack, not popularity. A listed compatibility match, clean staging run, and maintainable update path matter more than a generic claim that one technique is stronger.

How to compare mitigation choices

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it changes the decision
Exact compatibility Does the release name this Minecraft version, Forge or Fabric loader, Java version, and dependency set? A security mod that fails to load or breaks the pack leaves the server unavailable or unprotected.
Process coverage Does it protect the server, the client, or both, and is a paired deployment required? Server and client Java processes have separate attack surfaces.
Pack compatibility Does staging preserve startup, world loading, networking, machines, dimensions, and normal client joins? Coremods and filters can expose hidden assumptions in older packs.
Maintenance Is the project releasing builds for the pack’s branch, and can administrators monitor future advisories? A one-time installation is not a substitute for keeping mod code current.
Operations Can you isolate the host, restore a known-good backup, rotate credentials, and obtain help during an incident? Mitigation software cannot undo code that already ran with the server account’s permissions.

Scan the server, clients, and mod archives

A clean startup after an update does not establish that the host was never compromised. MMPA recommends checking for suspicious files, running antivirus, and scanning the .minecraft directory. CurseForge has documented a detection tool that scans folders containing mod JARs and reports infected files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop or snapshot the server according to your host’s safe procedure before scanning, so running processes cannot alter evidence.
  2. Scan the server host’s Minecraft directory, staging directories, uploaded archives, startup scripts, temporary directories, and user home directories.
  3. Scan every launcher instance and modpack cache used by administrators and players who handled the pack. Include the .minecraft directory and any custom instance paths.
  4. Scan offline backups and shared file stores. Mark a backup as untrusted if it was writable by a compromised account during the exposure window.
  5. Run the documented CurseForge mod-folder detection tool on copies of the folders, and use the host’s antivirus or endpoint scanner as a second control.
  6. Record file names, paths, timestamps, and scanner results. A “no detection” result reduces one concern but does not prove that credentials, worlds, or configuration files were untouched.

What to do when you find indicators of compromise

Indicators can include an unexpected JAR or script, unexplained new user accounts, changed startup files, unfamiliar scheduled tasks, outbound connections that the server does not need, altered worlds or configurations, or credentials that suddenly stop working. Treat an unexplained change as a security incident until you can establish when and why it occurred.

  1. Stop the server. Prevent further player connections and preserve logs. Do not keep restarting a suspicious process to see whether the symptom disappears.
  2. Isolate the host. Restrict unnecessary network access while retaining the controlled access needed for investigation and evidence collection.
  3. Rotate credentials from a clean device. Change panel, SSH, RCON, database, Discord integration, backup, and other credentials that the server or administrator workstation could access. Revoke old sessions and keys where the service supports it.
  4. Compare against known-good copies. Check world data, configuration, scripts, mod JARs, launcher files, and scheduled tasks against a backup from before the suspected exposure.
  5. Rebuild when integrity is uncertain. A fresh host and clean operating-system installation are safer than trying to remove an attacker’s files from a system that may have been modified outside the Minecraft directory.
  6. Restore selectively. Bring back only vetted worlds and configuration data. Re-download mods and mitigation releases from authoritative project pages rather than restoring an entire unverified application directory.
  7. Re-test before reconnecting players. Apply updates and the chosen mitigation in staging, scan the restored files, then return the server to the public network with monitoring and backups enabled.

How to assess whether a modpack was infected

There is no single visual clue that proves a pack was infected. Use a chain of evidence: identify the exact JAR hashes or release files, compare them with known-good copies, scan the folders, inspect logs and host changes, and establish the time window during which an affected mod was present and reachable.

Evidence that supports a clean rebuild

  • The active mod directory contains an affected or unverified JAR and the server was exposed to untrusted connections.
  • Files appeared or changed outside the expected update window.
  • Credentials, scheduled tasks, startup scripts, worlds, or configurations changed without an administrator’s explanation.
  • Scanners report an infected file, or multiple independent indicators point to the same host or pack.
  • You cannot establish which backups were writable during the suspected exposure.

Absence of a detection does not prove absence of execution. If you cannot establish file and credential integrity, rebuilding and rotating secrets is the defensible option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational controls that keep the fix effective

  • Separate roles. Run Minecraft under a dedicated account with only the permissions it needs. Do not use an administrator or root account for routine server execution.
  • Limit management access. Restrict panel, SSH, RCON, database, and backup access to trusted administrators, and avoid exposing management interfaces directly to the public internet.
  • Keep layered backups. Maintain offline or access-controlled copies of worlds and configurations, with retention that includes a period before any suspected compromise.
  • Track exact pack revisions. Store a manifest of Minecraft, loader, Java, mod, and mitigation versions so a future incident can be scoped quickly.
  • Stage updates. Test mod and mitigation changes against a copy of the pack before production, especially for legacy 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 environments.
  • Monitor logs and files. Alert on unexpected JARs, startup scripts, accounts, scheduled tasks, and repeated serialization errors instead of relying only on a one-time scan.
  • Keep clients aligned. Publish the tested pack revision and mitigation requirement to players; clients running a different set can fail to join or retain a separate exposure.

Troubleshooting common deployment failures

The server will not start after installing a mitigation

Stop and return to the staged copy. Check the first class-loading, dependency, or Java exception in the log, verify the exact Minecraft and loader version, and confirm that only one release of the mitigation is present. Do not solve a startup failure by copying random versions into the live server.

Clients can no longer connect

Compare the server and client pack manifests, loader versions, Java runtimes, and mitigation releases. A client-only file cannot satisfy a server dependency, and a server-side filter cannot automatically install a client component. Follow the project’s stated server/client arrangement for that release.

The pack works, but machines or dimensions fail

Repeat the staged test with the affected mod’s actual content: load a representative world, open inventories, use machines, travel between dimensions, and restart. If the failure appears only after the mitigation, capture the complete logs and seek a release or configuration documented for that pack instead of disabling protection on production.

A scanner reports a suspicious file in a backup

Quarantine the backup and determine whether it was writable during the exposure window. Restore only data that can be validated; do not copy its entire application or mod directory into a rebuilt host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Incident timeline and source dates

The MMPA published its BleedingPipe advisory on July 29, 2023, including the warning that the issue was exploited in the wild and the recommendation to take it seriously. Shockbyte published its server/client protection article on September 11, 2024. CurseForge support recorded the modification date for its infected-mod detection-tool article as April 8, 2024. These dates describe the cited guidance; they do not replace checking the current release notes for the exact modpack and loader you operate.

No independently published prevalence, victim-count, or mitigation-success-rate statistic is established by the cited material. Security decisions should therefore rely on the actual mod inventory, compatibility evidence, scan results, and host integrity rather than an assumed percentage of affected servers.
