There are two separate problems behind unwanted Grok-related email: protecting the address you use to sign in to Grok, and filtering messages that arrive at that address. Change or add the sign-in address through accounts.x.ai; control spam, blocking, unsubscribing, and phishing reports in your email provider.
Keeping those jobs separate prevents a common mistake: changing a Grok privacy setting will not clean an external inbox, while an email filter will not repair a lost or compromised Grok login.

Identify which problem you are solving
Start by classifying what happened. The correct fix depends on whether you are receiving ordinary marketing, deceptive messages, or account-related notices at an address you can no longer use.
- Unwanted mail is reaching your inbox: use your email provider’s spam, block, unsubscribe, and phishing controls.
- You joined a legitimate mailing list and no longer want it: use the list’s unsubscribe control, preferably from a message you recognize.
- You want a different address for Grok sign-in: update or add it in the xAI account flow at accounts.x.ai.
- You lost access to the old address: establish access to a replacement address and use xAI’s documented sign-in and linking flow.
- Someone changed the email on your account: treat it as an account-compromise case and contact xAI support promptly.
These categories can overlap. For example, a compromised mailbox requires both account recovery and ordinary provider-level spam protection.

Protect the Grok sign-in address
Use xAI’s account portal, not an inbox setting
For Grok on the Grok website and apps, xAI’s account FAQ says: “Update or add your sign-in email at accounts.x.ai.” Open the portal directly, sign in, and check the current labels and instructions shown there. Menus and screenshots found in older guides can become inaccurate, so follow the live account flow.
The sign-in address is an authentication and recovery channel. It is not the same thing as a marketing preference or an email-provider spam rule. A Gmail, Apple Mail, workplace, or other provider setting cannot change which address xAI associates with your account.
Before changing the address
- Confirm that you can receive mail at the replacement address.
- Use an address you expect to control for the long term, not one that may expire after a short period.
- Keep access to the old address until the account portal confirms the change, when possible.
- Check whether the account is used on the Grok website or apps, rather than assuming that instructions for Grok inside X apply unchanged.
After the change, look for an account confirmation or other expected message at the replacement address. Do not infer that the change succeeded merely because a form submitted; verify the account’s displayed sign-in information and your ability to complete a future sign-in or recovery request.

xAI’s FAQ describes signing in with a new personal email, Google, or X account and linking it there when the original address cannot be used. The available route can depend on how the account was created, so use the options presented by xAI rather than creating a second account by accident.
Do not use a temporary or disposable mailbox for a long-lived Grok account. If that mailbox disappears, you may lose the recovery channel even if it initially accepts the verification message.

Apple-purchased subscriptions
If your Grok subscription was purchased through Apple, the email is managed through Apple according to xAI’s FAQ. In that situation, changing an address in a general Grok screen may not update the subscription identity. Check the Apple-managed account details and the instructions displayed by xAI before making a change.
If an attacker changed the email
An unexpected change to the account email is different from ordinary spam. Contact xAI support immediately and provide the user ID and details that establish ownership, as requested in xAI’s account guidance. Secure the affected mailbox as well: change its password through the provider, review recovery methods and active sessions, and report suspicious messages through the provider. Do not wait for a spam filter to resolve an account takeover.
Stop unwanted mail in Gmail
Gmail controls what happens to messages after they reach the mailbox. Its controls are useful examples, but the labels and exact paths may differ in another provider or in a managed workplace account.
Report a message as spam
- Open Gmail and select the unwanted message.
- Choose Report spam (the exclamation-mark icon may appear in the toolbar).
- Confirm the action if Gmail asks.
The message moves to Spam. Gmail says that reporting or moving a message to Spam sends Google a copy that it may analyze to help protect users. That sharing detail matters if you are deciding between reporting and simply deleting a message.
Block a persistent sender
- Open a message from the sender.
- Select the message’s More menu.
- Choose Block followed by the sender confirmation.
Blocking is aimed at a recurring individual sender rather than an entire service. Google states: “After you block the sender, all future emails from them go to Spam.” Check the Spam folder if you are expecting a legitimate message from that address later.

Unsubscribe from a legitimate list
Use Unsubscribe when you recognize the organization and previously chose to receive its mail but no longer want it. The link may appear near the sender information at the top of a Gmail message or inside the message itself. Unsubscribing addresses the mailing-list relationship; reporting the message as spam is more appropriate when you did not request it or cannot trust the sender.

When the message is asking for passwords, payment details, security codes, or other personal information, use Gmail’s phishing-report option instead.
Report phishing
- Do not follow links, open unexpected attachments, reply, or enter information from the message.
- Open Gmail’s message menu and select Report phishing (the wording can vary by interface).
- Complete any confirmation screen and then delete the message.
Google’s Gmail guidance specifically advises reporting suspicious requests for personal information as phishing. Verify a request independently—for example, by opening the known account portal yourself—rather than using a link or phone number in the message.
Use the right action for each kind of message

What to do with another email provider
If you use a provider other than Gmail, find its current Junk, Spam, Block sender, Unsubscribe, and Report phishing controls. The names and behavior are not guaranteed to match Gmail. Apple Mail, Outlook, webmail services, and workplace systems can apply filtering on different servers or devices, so a rule made in one app may not affect the mailbox everywhere.
Prefer the provider’s built-in abuse and phishing report command over manually forwarding a suspicious message unless the provider specifically instructs you to do so. If the mailbox is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control filtering, retention, and reporting options; follow that organization’s process for a persistent problem.

After creating a block or rule, senders can still use a different address or domain. Review the result over the next few messages and report new abusive variants rather than assuming one blocked address covers an entire campaign.

Most readers should keep an accessible address and manage its inbox. A separate persistent address or alias can isolate service-related mail from a primary personal mailbox, but it is optional and does not guarantee less spam.

If you choose a separate address, make it one you can keep, sign in to, and secure. Test that you can receive verification and recovery messages before moving the account. Do not assume that forwarding, plus-addressing, or any named alias service is accepted by xAI; the available account flow is the authority.
Keep Grok on X separate from Grok.com and app accounts
The xAI account FAQ applies to Grok on the website and apps. xAI’s privacy policy says that use of Grok on X is governed by X’s privacy policy and terms. Do not apply every account or privacy instruction for Grok.com and the apps to the X experience without checking the relevant X help information.

X settings can address use of public data and interactions, personalization, conversation history, and post visibility. They do not replace the spam controls of the external email provider that hosts your address. Changing a post-visibility or data-use setting on X will not block a sender in Gmail, Apple Mail, a workplace mailbox, or another provider.
Protect the mailbox as well as the Grok account
An address is only useful for recovery while its mailbox remains secure. Apply the provider’s available account-security measures, keep recovery information current, and review sign-in alerts or active sessions when offered. These actions protect access; they are separate from spam classification.
- Use a unique, strong mailbox password and change it through the provider if you suspect exposure.
- Never disclose a one-time sign-in or recovery code in response to an email.
- Open accounts.x.ai by typing the address or using a saved, trusted bookmark when checking Grok account details.
- Inspect the actual sender address and destination domain before trusting a message that claims to be from an account service.
- Keep the replacement address accessible before removing the old one from a recovery process.
These precautions reduce the chance that a convincing message turns into a lost account, but they do not make an address invisible. Expect to continue using provider-level filtering for ordinary unwanted mail.
Troubleshoot common failures
The “unsubscribe” link does nothing
If the message is suspicious, stop interacting with it and report phishing instead. If it is a trusted list, try the provider’s displayed unsubscribe control or contact the organization through a website address you navigate to independently. Continue reporting new messages if they persist.
Blocked mail still appears
In Gmail, a blocked sender’s future mail goes to Spam rather than disappearing. Check whether the messages come from a different address, a mailing-list relay, or a changed domain. Report the new messages and review any provider rules that may be overriding your expectation.
You changed the sign-in email but cannot recover the account
Confirm access to the replacement mailbox, check its Spam and Junk folders for verification mail, and return to the live xAI account flow. If the old address was changed by someone else or you cannot establish ownership, contact xAI support with your user ID and ownership details.
You receive a message demanding immediate action
Urgency is not proof of authenticity. Do not use the message’s link or reply address. Open the known account portal independently, or report the message as phishing through your provider.
A practical protection routine
- Classify the issue: inbox spam, unwanted marketing, lost access, or suspected compromise.
- Secure the sign-in identity: for Grok website and app accounts, review or change the address at accounts.x.ai.
- Verify recovery: confirm that the replacement address receives mail and remains under your control.
- Process each message correctly: unsubscribe from trusted lists, report ordinary unwanted mail as spam, block persistent senders, and report suspicious requests as phishing.
- Separate services only when useful: a persistent alias can improve organization, but never use a disposable address for a long-lived account and never assume alias compatibility.
- Escalate compromise: contact xAI support immediately if someone changed the account email, while securing the mailbox with its provider.
This approach preserves the address needed for authentication and recovery while leaving day-to-day mail filtering where it belongs: with the service that actually delivers your email.
