A portfolio can own several ETFs, mutual funds and individual stocks yet still depend heavily on the same handful of large technology companies. The practical defense is to look through every fund to its current holdings, measure overlapping exposure by company, sector and asset class, compare that result with a target allocation based on your goals, and rebalance according to a pre-set process. There is no regulator-approved universal limit for “AI stocks,” and diversification reduces risk without eliminating losses.
What concentrated AI-stock risk actually means
Concentration is an unintended large combined exposure to one issuer, one industry or a shared group of companies. It is not determined by the number of securities or funds in an account. A person could own a technology fund, a broad U.S. index fund and individual shares, while each investment holds some of the same large companies. The overlap may be invisible until the underlying positions are added together.

“AI stock” is also an informal description, not a single legally defined sector. It may refer to chip designers, cloud providers, software companies, data-center operators or businesses using machine learning in products. Those businesses have different revenues, valuations and risks. Treating every company associated with AI as identical can obscure rather than clarify portfolio risk.

The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance says diversification means spreading investments across assets and industries to reduce overall portfolio risk. That protection depends on what the investments actually own. Two funds with different names can have similar index constituents, and a broad index can be dominated by the largest companies because of how it is weighted.

Market-capitalization-weighted indexes assign larger weights to companies with larger total market values. If a small group of mega-cap companies grows faster than the rest of the market, their weights in a cap-weighted fund can rise. The fund may still represent hundreds or thousands of securities, but portfolio results can become more dependent on its biggest holdings.
What concentration can and cannot tell you
A high combined weight in a company or sector does not predict that a loss will occur. It does show that an adverse event affecting that exposure can have an outsized effect on the portfolio. Company earnings, regulation, competition, interest rates, supply chains and investor expectations can affect technology shares in different ways. Diversification is intended to reduce the impact of any one outcome, not guarantee a positive return.
How to check whether your funds own the same companies
Use current information for each account and each fund. Fund holdings and weights change, and disclosures are published periodically. The SEC says investors can find holdings through a fund’s website, shareholder reports, fact sheets, prospectuses and filings in EDGAR.
1. Gather every investment account
- List taxable brokerage accounts, workplace retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, education accounts and any other investment account you consider part of the same financial plan.
- Record each individual security, fund name, ticker, share count, market value and account type as of the same date.
- Include cash, bonds and international holdings. Concentration is a portfolio-level question, so excluding an account can produce a misleading result.
2. Open the underlying fund disclosures
For every ETF or mutual fund, note the index or strategy it follows, the weighting method, the latest holdings date and the percentage in its largest positions. Review the prospectus and shareholder report for investment objectives, expenses, turnover, specific risks and any limits on the strategy. A fund that calls itself an index fund can still track a narrow, sector-focused or custom index.
3. Create an overlap worksheet
A spreadsheet can make duplicate ownership visible. Use one row for each underlying company and separate columns for direct shares and each fund. Multiply each fund’s portfolio weight in that company by the dollar value you hold in the fund, then add direct holdings and all fund-derived amounts. The result is the company’s approximate dollar exposure across the accounts you included.
| What to record | Why it matters | Where to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Fund’s largest holdings and weights | Shows whether several funds rely on the same issuers | Current holdings file, fact sheet or shareholder report |
| Index name and weighting method | Explains whether market value, equal weight or another rule drives exposure | Prospectus and index methodology |
| Direct stock positions | Adds exposure that fund-only analysis misses | Brokerage statement |
| Sector and industry classifications | Reveals common risk even when company names differ | Fund disclosure and issuer classification |
| Asset class, geography and company-size mix | Shows whether the portfolio depends on one market segment | Fund objective, holdings and allocation report |
| Expense ratio and other costs | Costs reduce returns and may differ among otherwise similar funds | Prospectus and fee table |
Do not combine figures from different holdings dates without labeling the dates. A fund’s top position can change between reporting periods, and market prices can alter weights even when the fund has not traded.

Measure concentration at three levels
Issuer concentration
First total exposure to each company, including direct shares and indirect ownership through every fund. The relevant question is not “How many funds hold this company?” but “What portion of my total portfolio would be affected if this company fell sharply?” Include related share classes or listings where applicable.

Next group holdings by sector or industry and identify shared economic drivers. Several companies may be classified in different industries while depending on the same spending cycle, customers, data-center demand or semiconductor supply chain. Because classifications differ among providers, use a consistent system and document how you grouped the holdings.
Asset-class, geography and size concentration
Check the balance among stocks, bonds, cash and other assets, then examine U.S. versus non-U.S. exposure and large-, mid- and small-company exposure. Adding an asset category can change the portfolio’s behavior, but it is not a guaranteed hedge. Bonds carry interest-rate and credit risks; international and smaller-company investments carry their own market, currency and liquidity risks.
Set a target allocation before you trade
An allocation should follow the purpose of the money, the time until it is needed, and both your willingness and your financial ability to tolerate losses. Someone saving for a near-term expense may need a different mix from someone investing for a goal several decades away. There is no single appropriate stock, bond or AI-related allocation for every investor.
Write a short investment policy
Before changing positions, document the allocation you intend to maintain and the reasons for it. Specify the broad asset categories, geographic or company-size ranges you consider acceptable, how new contributions will be directed, and when you will review the plan. A written policy helps distinguish a deliberate change from a reaction to headlines or a recent price surge.
Do not invent an AI-stock ceiling simply because a number sounds precise. The SEC materials do not establish a universal percentage cap or a single rebalance trigger. A limit, if you use one, should be part of a broader plan that reflects your circumstances rather than a market-wide rule.

Separate risk capacity from risk preference
- Risk capacity: how much loss your finances can withstand without derailing a goal, considering income, emergency reserves, debt and the date money is needed.
- Risk tolerance: how much volatility you can endure psychologically without abandoning the plan.
- Time horizon: how long the assets can remain invested before withdrawals are required.
These factors can point in different directions. A long horizon may permit more volatility, but a person with unstable income may still have limited capacity for loss. If the decision depends on tax, retirement or estate details, individualized advice from a qualified professional may be appropriate; verify credentials and disciplinary history independently.
Practical ways to reduce unintended concentration
Redirect new contributions
One of the least disruptive methods is directing future deposits toward underrepresented asset categories rather than immediately selling a position. This can gradually change the mix and may avoid realizing taxable gains in a brokerage account. It will not fix a large imbalance quickly, and workplace plans may offer only a limited menu, so measure the result over time.
Use a broader or differently constructed fund
When a fund is too narrow for your target, compare alternatives on more than the label “index” or “ETF.” Examine actual issuer overlap, sector exposure, geographic and company-size mix, index construction, expenses, tracking error, turnover and strategy-specific risks. A sector fund or custom index can be more concentrated or complex than a total-market approach, even when both are passively managed.

Add other asset categories deliberately
Depending on the goal, investors may use high-quality bonds, cash reserves, international stocks or smaller-company exposure to broaden the portfolio. These choices change expected volatility and return characteristics; none is a guaranteed offset to losses in AI-related companies. Understand the risks and liquidity of each category before using it.
Trim or exchange positions only within the plan
Selling a holding can restore an intended allocation, but a transaction may create taxable gains, trading costs or a loss of a tax benefit. Account type matters: a transaction inside a retirement account may have different immediate tax consequences from one in a taxable account, while withdrawal rules still apply. Consider the full household and tax picture rather than acting on a single price move.
When and how to rebalance
Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the allocation selected for the goal. It may involve selling an overweight asset, buying an underweight asset, redirecting contributions or combining those actions.

Periodic rebalancing
The SEC describes reviewing on a schedule, with intervals such as six or twelve months given as examples. A schedule creates a repeatable process and reduces the temptation to trade in response to every market story. “Six months” or “twelve months” are examples of a method, not instructions that fit everyone.

Another method is acting when an allocation moves beyond a pre-set band around its target. The threshold should be chosen in advance and applied consistently. A very narrow band can lead to frequent trades, taxes and costs; a very wide band can allow substantial drift. The available SEC guidance does not prescribe a universal threshold.
Tax and account checks before a rebalance
- Identify whether selling would realize short- or long-term gains or losses.
- Check whether the account is taxable, tax-deferred or tax-advantaged and understand applicable distribution rules.
- Compare commissions, spreads, fund exchange fees and other expenses.
- Use contributions, withdrawals or exchanges where they can restore the mix with less tax impact, while still following the account’s rules.
- Record the trade and the resulting allocation so the next review uses accurate data.
Relatively infrequent rebalancing generally avoids turning the portfolio into a trading strategy. The right frequency depends on the policy you set, the size of drift and your personal tax and account circumstances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an index fund be too concentrated in a few AI-related companies?
Yes. “Index fund” describes how a fund seeks to track an index, not how broad that index must be. A market-cap-weighted broad-market index can develop substantial exposure to its largest companies. A technology or thematic index may be narrower still. Multiple funds tracking different indexes can also hold the same issuers.
To evaluate an index fund, ask:
- What securities does the index include, and how often does it rebalance?
- Are weights based on market capitalization, equal weighting, revenue, fundamentals or another rule?
- What are the current top holdings and their combined weight?
- How much overlap exists with funds already in the portfolio?
- What are the expense ratio, transaction costs, tracking error and other specific risks?
- Does the fund’s asset class, geography and company-size mix match the target allocation?
Index funds still carry the risks of their underlying securities. They can underperform their indexes because of fees, trading costs, sampling, cash holdings or tracking error. Read the prospectus and reports rather than assuming passive management means low concentration or low risk.
Protect yourself from AI-themed investment fraud
The January 25, 2024 joint alert from the SEC, NASAA and FINRA warns that fraudsters use enthusiasm about artificial intelligence to promote investment schemes. Promotions may claim that an AI system can guarantee profits, use deepfake announcements or rely on celebrity and influencer endorsements.
Best Value
The alert states: “Claims of high guaranteed investment returns with little or no risk are classic warning signs of fraud.” Treat urgency, secret algorithms, pressure to transfer money and promises of exceptional returns with little risk as reasons to stop and verify, not as evidence of an opportunity.
Verification steps
- Check whether the adviser, broker, platform and company are registered with the relevant regulator.
- Read official company filings and fund documents instead of relying on screenshots, social posts or promotional videos.
- Independently confirm contact details and announcements through a known official channel.
- Do not send money solely because a person, celebrity or influencer appears to endorse the opportunity.
- Keep records of communications and report suspected fraud to the appropriate regulator.
A repeatable portfolio-review workflow
- Define the goal. Write the purpose, expected withdrawal date and acceptable loss before looking at a popular stock or fund.
- Inventory the household portfolio. Include every account, direct position, fund, cash balance and relevant holding date.
- Look through each fund. Download current holdings, read the index methodology and note expenses and risks.
- Aggregate overlap. Add direct and indirect exposure by issuer, then group the results by sector, geography, company size and asset class.
- Compare with the written target. Identify material drift without assuming that a particular percentage is universally correct.
- Choose the least disruptive correction. Consider new contributions, fund changes or sales in light of taxes, fees and account rules.
- Set the next review date or trigger. Use a periodic or threshold method and document the decision.
- Update the worksheet after implementation. Holdings change, so an old snapshot should not be treated as a permanent allocation report.
When professional help may be useful
A qualified investment professional can help translate goals, taxes, cash-flow needs and account rules into an allocation and rebalancing policy. That does not remove the need to understand what you own. Ask how the professional is compensated, what services are provided, what conflicts may exist and what credentials or registrations apply. Verify registration and disciplinary history through official sources before relying on advice.
The SEC’s beginner guidance emphasizes that allocation is personal. A professional cannot guarantee that a diversified portfolio will avoid losses or that an AI-related investment will outperform. The value of advice is in fitting a process to your circumstances and maintaining it through changing markets.

What the evidence says about losses
The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing notes that large-company stocks as a group have lost money on average about one out of every three years. That is a historical statement about large-company stocks generally, not a forecast and not an AI-stock statistic. It does not establish how much AI-related exposure a typical diversified portfolio has; current weights must be calculated from the specific funds and holdings date.
Bottom line
Count what the entire portfolio owns, not how many funds appear on the account page. Look through each fund’s current holdings and index rules, add overlapping company and sector exposure, set a target based on goals and risk capacity, and rebalance infrequently under a written plan that accounts for taxes and costs. Broader assets can reduce dependence on a small group of AI-linked companies, but no mix guarantees safety. Be equally skeptical of AI investment pitches that promise high returns with little or no risk.
