A market-risk plan limits the chance that a price crash, debt payment or margin call forces you to sell. A custody plan protects the private keys and recovery data that control your coins. A hardware wallet helps with the second problem, not the first: it cannot prevent Bitcoin’s market price from falling.
Keep emergency money outside Bitcoin, avoid borrowing against long-term holdings, use offline storage for savings, and write down selling or rebalancing rules before markets become stressful. A normal spot wallet does not liquidate itself; forced closure is associated with leverage, margin and the terms of a custodial service.

What protection can—and cannot—do
Bitcoin.org warns that the price of bitcoin can “unpredictably increase or decrease over a short period of time” because of its economy, evolving adoption and sometimes illiquid markets. No wallet type changes that market exposure. Wallet security determines who can authorize a transaction; it does not determine the value received when you sell.
| Threat | What happens | Primary control |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin price falls | Your holdings are worth less in the currency used for your bills. | Keep a cash reserve, size the position for your risk capacity and set written rebalancing rules. |
| Leveraged position moves against you | The venue can demand more margin or close the position. | Remove leverage from savings; understand margin and liquidation terms before using derivatives. |
| Phone, computer or exchange account is compromised | An attacker may obtain signing access or redirect a withdrawal. | Keep spending funds in a hot wallet and savings in offline storage with strong account security. |
| Device is lost or damaged | Wallet software may disappear even though the blockchain still records the coins. | Maintain a private recovery-phrase backup in more than one secure location. |
| Recovery phrase is exposed or destroyed | Anyone with the phrase can restore the wallet; losing it can make funds unrecoverable. | Use durable, private backups and never disclose the words to support staff or anyone else. |
| Custodian fails or restricts withdrawals | Access can be delayed or subject to insolvency, bankruptcy or compliance procedures. | Compare counterparty risk with the responsibilities of self-custody and keep critical savings under your own control when appropriate. |
Can a Bitcoin wallet be liquidated?
Self-custodied spot bitcoin
A standard wallet holding bitcoin that you own directly has no borrowing agreement and no automatic liquidation engine. A price drop reduces the market value, but the wallet does not sell coins merely because the price crossed a level. You decide whether and when to sign a transaction. Network fees, confirmation conditions and exchange availability can affect a sale, but those are different from a margin liquidation.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Leveraged or margined positions
Forced selling occurs when bitcoin is used as collateral or when you trade futures, options, perpetual contracts or other leveraged products. The CFTC cautions that when markets move against customers’ positions, they may have to refill margin accounts or have positions closed and may lose more than their initial investment. A liquidation price is a rule in the trading contract, not a property of a hardware or software wallet.
Do not place the portion of bitcoin intended as savings into a leveraged account. If you use derivatives as a hedge, treat them as advanced instruments: margin requirements, liquidation rules, slippage, expiration, pricing gaps and counterparty failure all remain possible. The CFTC describes futures and options as tools that hedgers may use to protect against volatility; that description is not a promise of profit or a guarantee that a hedge will work in every market.
Custodial products with special terms
An exchange or other provider may offer lending, yield, collateral or managed products with their own close-out rights. Read the agreement for collateral triggers, withdrawal limits, notice periods and what happens in an insolvency. FINMA’s January 12, 2026 guidance emphasizes robust infrastructure, monitoring and bankruptcy protection for crypto-asset safekeeping. A U.S. banking-agency statement dated July 14, 2025 likewise discusses risk management for crypto-asset custody. Legal protections and availability differ by jurisdiction.

1. Remove leverage from long-term holdings
Separate “savings” from “trading.” Savings should not depend on maintaining a margin ratio or meeting a lender’s collateral demand. Close or reduce borrowing that could force a sale at an inconvenient time, and do not use rent, tax money or emergency funds as collateral.

If you keep a small trading account, document its maximum loss, the source of margin and the circumstances in which you will stop. Keep that account operationally separate from the wallet that holds long-term savings. A hedge can reduce one type of exposure while adding other risks, so understand the contract rather than assuming it is insurance.
2. Hold a liquidity buffer outside Bitcoin
Keep rent or mortgage payments, taxes, debt payments and an emergency reserve in conventional cash or other assets suitable for your circumstances. The purpose is timing: you should not have to sell bitcoin during a drawdown simply because a bill arrived.
There is no universal percentage allocation, stop-loss level or drawdown threshold established by the cited guidance. The appropriate reserve depends on income stability, obligations, jurisdiction, tax treatment, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses. Choose an amount that covers your realistic needs, write down why, and revisit it when those needs change.
3. Write a selling and rebalancing policy
Decisions made during a rapid fall are vulnerable to panic. Create a short policy while calm. It can specify:

- Which money is never invested in bitcoin, including near-term bills and taxes.
- The maximum share of your investable assets you are willing to keep in bitcoin.
- When you will rebalance, such as after a position grows beyond your personally chosen range.
- Which events justify a partial sale, such as a change in your time horizon or an upcoming liability.
- Who can approve a transaction if you use a shared or multisignature wallet.
- How you will record the date, amount, price and fees for tax reporting.
A policy is not a prediction. It is a precommitment that replaces an all-or-nothing reaction with a defined action. Do not add a numeric threshold merely because another investor uses one; the sources do not establish a number that fits everyone.
Separate spending money from savings
Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and moving the remainder to a safer environment. Apply that principle by maintaining at least two operational tiers:
- Spending wallet: a hot wallet containing only what you expect to use. It is convenient for frequent payments but exposed to the security of the phone, computer, browser and installed applications.
- Savings wallet: an offline or hardware-based wallet holding the amount you do not need for routine spending. It should not be connected to everyday browser extensions or left logged in on an exchange.
Transfer between the tiers deliberately. Verify the destination address on the signing device, send a small test amount when setting up a new destination, and retain enough liquidity in the spending wallet for ordinary needs. Do not treat an exchange account as a permanent savings wallet merely because it is easy to access.

Use a hardware wallet for key security
What it protects
Bitcoin.org describes an offline wallet, also called cold storage, as providing the highest level of security for savings and identifies hardware wallets as the best balance between very high security and ease of use. A hardware wallet keeps signing keys in a dedicated physical device so that an infected computer has fewer opportunities to extract them. The device still authorizes transactions, while the blockchain records the resulting balances.

What it does not protect
- It cannot stop bitcoin’s market price from falling.
- It cannot guarantee that you can sell at a particular price or obtain cash immediately.
- It cannot replace a recovery-phrase backup.
- It cannot make a leveraged position safe or prevent a margin call on another account.
- It cannot compensate for a stolen recovery phrase or a transaction sent to the wrong address.
Safer setup sequence
- Obtain a genuine device through a channel you can verify, and inspect packaging and device prompts for signs of tampering.
- Initialize it yourself in a private location. Do not let another person generate or record the recovery words.
- Write the recovery phrase on a durable physical medium. Never photograph it, store it in email or cloud notes, or paste it into a website.
- Set a strong device PIN and enable any available passphrase feature only if you understand how recovery works.
- Record a receiving address and compare the address shown on the device screen with the address on your computer or phone.
- Send a small test transaction, confirm it, and then move the intended savings amount.
- Keep the device, phrase and any passphrase information in separate, controlled locations. A thief who obtains the phrase does not need the device.
Follow the manufacturer’s documented update and recovery procedures, and verify every address on the device rather than trusting a clipboard or browser display.
Protect the recovery phrase
The SEC Investor Bulletin explains that a seed phrase is a random sequence of words that can restore a wallet after the device or software is lost. Treat it as the recovery key, not as a password that can be reset. Anyone who obtains it can generally recreate the wallet and authorize transactions; if you lose it and the device fails, the funds may be unrecoverable.
Backup practices
- Keep more than one copy in separate secure physical locations so one fire, flood or theft does not destroy every copy.
- Use durable storage. Bitcoin.org recommends encrypted backups, multiple secure locations and storage media that can withstand ordinary physical damage.
- Keep the phrase private from friends, relatives, contractors and support agents. Legitimate support should not need the words.
- Document which wallet software, derivation method or passphrase is required to restore the backup, but store that information separately from the phrase when doing so improves security.
- Test recovery with a spare device or a controlled procedure before depositing a large balance. A backup that has never been tested may contain a transcription error.
Plan for inheritance
Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange but makes you responsible for continuity. A trusted successor needs to know that a plan exists without receiving unrestricted access during your lifetime. Consider legal advice in your jurisdiction, document the location of required information, and make sure the instructions explain which approvals are needed if the wallet uses multisignature control.

Add multiple approvals when the balance justifies the complexity
Bitcoin.org describes multisignature wallets that require several independent approvals, such as a 3-of-5 arrangement. The keys can be distributed among devices, people or locations so that one compromised device or one lost location does not automatically give an attacker control.

- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. - Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Multisignature is not a substitute for documentation. Record the wallet configuration, participating devices, recovery paths and the number of signatures required. More participants increase coordination and recovery complexity; a mistake in the setup can make spending difficult. Use it when the security benefit and continuity plan justify that operational burden.

| Approach | Forced-liquidation exposure | Custody and counterparty risk | Recovery responsibility | Access and liquidity | Setup complexity | Privacy and oversight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot self-custody wallet | No automatic liquidation without a separate leveraged agreement | No exchange solvency risk, but device and key-security risks remain | Owner must protect and back up the phrase | Fast access for spending | Lower setup complexity | Transactions are controlled by the owner; phone and software security matter |
| Hardware or other offline self-custody | No automatic liquidation without a separate leveraged agreement | No custodian withdrawal or insolvency dependence | Owner must secure device, phrase and recovery instructions | Less convenient for frequent spending; transfers require deliberate signing | Higher setup and recovery discipline | Keys remain under the owner’s control |
| Custodial spot account | Depends on the provider’s terms; spot balances are different from margin positions | Provider solvency, operations, withdrawals, bankruptcy and compliance | Provider handles key recovery, while the customer handles account access | Often convenient, but withdrawals can be restricted or delayed | Lower personal key-management burden | Identity and transaction monitoring may apply |
| Leveraged venue or collateral account | Margin calls and forced closure are contractual possibilities | Trading-venue and counterparty risks add to market risk | Customer must manage margin, account security and contract terms | Positions can be closed when margin requirements are not met | Highest operational and financial complexity | Terms, records and regulatory treatment vary by jurisdiction |
Neither model is universally safer. Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange’s solvency and withdrawal policy but transfers responsibility for keys, backups and inheritance to you. A custodian may simplify recovery and access while adding counterparty, operational, bankruptcy and compliance risks. Compare those trade-offs for the specific jurisdiction and service rather than assuming a label guarantees protection.
What to do when the market starts falling
- Pause before sending or selling. Confirm that the alert, price and account are genuine. Do not follow an urgent message that asks for your recovery phrase or a rushed transfer.
- Identify the position type. Check whether the bitcoin is in self-custody, a spot account, a lending product or a leveraged position. Only the latter categories can impose contractual close-out rules.
- Check obligations and margin. Make sure rent, taxes, debt payments and emergency cash are covered. If leverage exists, read the venue’s current margin and liquidation requirements immediately.
- Apply the written policy. Rebalance or sell only according to the rules you set for your time horizon and risk capacity. Do not invent a new all-in or all-out decision because of a headline.
- Verify every transaction. Confirm the destination address on the signing device, use a test transfer for a new destination and keep the recovery phrase offline.
- Record the transaction. Save the date, amount, execution price, fees and purpose so that tax reporting and later review are possible.
Should you move Bitcoin to cash or a stablecoin?
Moving to conventional cash can remove bitcoin price exposure for the amount moved and can fund near-term obligations. It also creates a taxable or reportable disposal in some jurisdictions, so check local rules before acting. Keep the reserve in a form that is accessible when bills are due and appropriate for your banking and legal circumstances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA stablecoin remains a digital asset rather than a universal substitute for emergency cash. Before using one, evaluate redemption arrangements, issuer or platform dependence, transfer restrictions, tax treatment and the possibility that access changes during market stress. The guidance cited here does not establish a universal stablecoin allocation or a percentage that every Bitcoin holder should convert. The decision should follow your liquidity needs and risk capacity, not a promise that the token will track a currency in every circumstance.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Keeping the entire balance in a phone wallet: move savings to offline storage and leave only spending funds online.
- Assuming a hardware wallet is a price hedge: separate key security from market-risk planning and maintain cash reserves.
- Borrowing against long-term holdings: remove leverage or keep it strictly outside the savings plan so a drawdown cannot trigger a forced sale.
- Saving the seed phrase in a cloud account: create private physical backups in more than one secure location.
- Giving the phrase to “support”: stop contact; legitimate support does not need recovery words.
- Making one backup copy: use multiple durable copies and test that a restoration procedure works.
- Never testing recovery: perform a controlled recovery before the balance becomes substantial.
- Ignoring inheritance: document the wallet structure and the people or devices required to authorize recovery.
- Confusing a spot balance with a margin position: read the account type and contract terms before assuming liquidation is possible or impossible.
- Reacting to a single price move: return to the written allocation, liquidity and rebalancing rules.
Maintenance checklist
Review the plan whenever your income, debts, dependents, jurisdiction, tax status or investment horizon changes. Confirm that:
- Emergency cash and near-term obligations are outside Bitcoin.
- No savings wallet is linked to a margin or lending agreement.
- Hot-wallet balances remain limited to spending needs.
- Offline devices, backups and any passphrase instructions are physically secure.
- At least one recovery test has succeeded and the documented wallet configuration is current.
- Multisignature participants, if any, still have functioning devices and clear responsibilities.
- Custodial accounts have been checked for withdrawal, bankruptcy and compliance terms.
- Your selling and rebalancing policy still matches your ability to withstand a loss.
The central trade-off is unavoidable: self-custody gives you control but demands disciplined key management, while custodial convenience introduces dependence on another organization. Combining a written market plan, adequate liquidity, offline savings storage and tested recovery procedures addresses both ways a crash can hurt—being forced to sell and being unable to access what you own.
