How to Prompt GPT-6 Astra for Reproducible Physics Calculations and Verifiable Citations

The reliable way to use GPT-6 Astra for physics is to treat it as a transparent calculation assistant, not an oracle. Give it a complete problem specification, require a symbolic derivation and dimensional checks, demand executable code with pinned dependencies, and make it stop when a missing assumption could change the physical conclusion. Then rerun the code yourself, compare the result with an independent solution, and preserve the prompt, inputs, environment, outputs, logs, and citation ledger as one run bundle.

That workflow turns a plausible-looking answer into an auditable computational result. It also separates what a cited source establishes—such as a constant, equation, dataset, or algorithm—from what Astra calculated and what you independently validated.

What reproducible physics calculation means

A calculation is reproducible when another person can use the same stated inputs, code, software environment, and instructions to obtain the same numerical result within a declared tolerance. In physics, that is only the beginning. A result can reproduce a coding mistake perfectly, so scientific reproducibility also requires evidence that the model and implementation represent the intended system.

Do not call a result reproducible merely because the chat can be reopened. A conversation may omit hidden defaults, change after a model update, or depend on unavailable tools and files. Reproducibility belongs to a saved run record, not to a transient answer.

Start with a complete problem specification

Astra can ask a follow-up question when an omitted detail could materially change the answer. Encourage that behavior rather than forcing it to guess. Before requesting arithmetic, write down the physical problem in a form another researcher could implement without interpreting your intent.

State the system and the requested result

  • Name the physical system and the observable to calculate.
  • Define every symbol, coordinate direction, reference frame, and sign convention.
  • Describe geometry, dimensions, interfaces, sources, loads, and material regions.
  • Give initial conditions and every boundary condition, including time-dependent or periodic conditions.
  • Specify whether the problem is steady-state, transient, linear, nonlinear, relativistic, quantum, continuum, discrete, or otherwise specialized.
  • State the desired output format, numerical precision, significant figures, and acceptable error or tolerance.

Make an input contract

Require a table before any calculation. Each input should have a symbol, numerical value, unit, precision, provenance, and status. The status distinguishes a measured value from an assumption or a value copied from a source.

Input record What Astra should show
Symbol and meaning For example, m = mass of the test body
Value and unit The supplied number in its original unit, followed by the coherent unit used in calculation
Precision Instrument precision, significant figures, or stated uncertainty
Provenance Measured, assumed, derived, or linked to a named source and version
Validity Temperature range, pressure range, geometry, frequency band, or other conditions under which the value applies

Tell Astra to convert all quantities to one coherent unit system before substitution. Ask it to display conversions and to flag any dimensional inconsistency instead of silently repairing it.

Use a prompt with explicit gates

The following structure makes the requested behavior unambiguous. Replace the bracketed content with your problem and keep the section labels so the response can be audited.

ROLE
Act as a physics calculation assistant. Optimize for reproducibility, dimensional correctness,
traceable citations, and explicit uncertainty. Do not invent sources, constants, measurements,
or completed tests.

PROBLEM
[State the physical question, geometry, coordinate system, initial and boundary conditions,
knowns, unknowns, and desired output.]

INPUT CONTRACT
List every input with symbol, numerical value, unit, precision, provenance, and whether it is
measured, assumed, or taken from a cited source. Convert to one coherent unit system before
calculating.

MODEL AND ASSUMPTIONS
Name the governing equations, constitutive laws, approximations, regimes of validity, and
assumptions. Flag any assumption that could change the answer materially.

METHOD
Derive the equations symbolically first. Then provide executable Python/Julia/Matlab code or
precise pseudocode. Record algorithm, solver, tolerances, stopping criteria, precision, random
seed, and expected runtime or resource requirements.

VALIDATION
Perform dimensional analysis, limiting-case checks, conservation or symmetry checks where
applicable, and at least one independent analytic, benchmark, or alternate-method comparison.
Run convergence and sensitivity tests when the method is numerical. Report discrepancies and
explain whether they are acceptable.

CITATIONS
For each external fact, constant, dataset, method, or software artifact, provide the original
source, author or organization, publication year, DOI or URL, and exact version or commit when
available. Separate source-backed facts from your own derivation. Never fabricate a citation.

OUTPUT
Return: assumptions; equations; intermediate values; final value with units and significant
figures; uncertainty or sensitivity; validation results; complete code; environment and version
manifest; rerun command; and a citation ledger.

STOP CONDITIONS
Ask a focused question if an omitted input, unit, boundary condition, or model choice could
change the result. If a source or validation run is unavailable, say so explicitly.

The stop conditions are important. Add a rule such as “Do not select a default boundary condition” when several physically different choices are plausible. If the missing detail cannot change the conclusion, Astra can state the assumption and proceed; if it can, it should pause for your answer.

Demand a visible derivation

Ask for the symbolic form before numerical substitution. A transparent response should move from assumptions to governing equations, define intermediate variables, substitute values with units, and then report the result. This order lets you inspect the model independently of arithmetic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check dimensions at every stage

Require the dimensions of both sides of each equation and of every intermediate quantity. A dimensionally invalid expression is a hard failure, not a warning to ignore. Request a final unit conversion only after the calculation is complete, and ask Astra to explain why the reported unit matches the observable.

Control significant figures and uncertainty

Tell Astra whether uncertainties are measured, estimated, or unavailable. It should not manufacture error bars. When uncertainties are known, specify whether to propagate them analytically, by Monte Carlo sampling, or by another method, and require the method and random seed to be recorded. If only parameter sensitivity is possible, report how the output changes when each influential input is varied and label that analysis as sensitivity rather than a statistical uncertainty.

Separate source facts from derivation

Have the answer label each line as one of three things: a source-backed fact, an assumption supplied by you, or a derivation performed for this problem. That prevents a familiar equation or constant from appearing to have been independently verified when it was only generated from the model’s prior knowledge.

Make the computation executable and deterministic

A prose recipe is not enough for a numerical result. Request complete Python, Julia, or Matlab code, including imports, data loading, unit conversions, solver setup, output formatting, and assertions. If full code is impractical, require precise pseudocode that names each operation and parameter; then treat the result as provisional until implemented and run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record numerical settings

  • Algorithm and solver name, including integration or optimization method.
  • Absolute and relative tolerances, maximum iterations, stopping criteria, and mesh or timestep.
  • Arithmetic precision and any handling of overflow, underflow, or conditioning.
  • Random-number generator, seed, sampling count, and parallelization settings when randomness is used.
  • Expected runtime, memory demand, and hardware requirements.

Ask for assertions that fail loudly when units, array shapes, conservation quantities, or input ranges are wrong. Save standard output, warnings, exception traces, and solver diagnostics rather than copying only the final number.

Pin the environment

The run record should identify the operating system, hardware architecture, language and interpreter version, package versions, compiler where relevant, and exact model or API identifier. Include a dependency lockfile or equivalent environment specification. Record local code changes and the commit or archive used to run them. A later rerun should use the same versions first; only then should you test whether an upgrade changes the result.

GPT-6 Astra’s documented context window is 1,050,000 tokens and its maximum output is 128,000 tokens. Those limits make it practical to provide long specifications, source excerpts, and logs, but they do not remove the need to save files outside the chat or guarantee that a long response is complete. The model documentation gives an April 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff; facts newer than that date must be supplied or verified separately.

Validate the physics independently

Validation is the gate between “Astra produced code” and “this result is credible.” Use checks appropriate to the problem, and report failures rather than tuning them away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Analytic and benchmark comparisons

Compare at least one case with a closed-form solution, a published benchmark, a trusted reference implementation, or an alternate numerical method. State the reference’s assumptions and regime. Report the numerical discrepancy, the tolerance used to judge it, and a diagnosis when the difference is larger than expected.

Convergence tests

For a discretized or iterative method, vary mesh spacing, timestep, truncation order, solver tolerance, or sample count. Show the output and estimated error for each refinement. A result that changes materially under a tighter tolerance is not converged, even if the first run completed successfully.

Limiting, symmetry, and conservation checks

  • Test a limit where the behavior is known, such as zero force, infinite distance, weak coupling, or short time.
  • Use symmetry to verify equal or opposite quantities where the system requires them.
  • Check conservation of mass, charge, energy, momentum, probability, or another invariant appropriate to the model.
  • Verify positivity, boundedness, causality, or monotonicity constraints when the physics requires them.

Sensitivity and uncertainty

Vary inputs and model parameters over ranges justified by measurements or the problem statement. Identify which assumptions dominate the output. If a small change in a poorly known parameter produces a large change in the conclusion, state that the conclusion is conditional rather than precise.

Build a citation ledger that can be audited

A citation proves where an external fact came from; it does not prove that Astra applied the fact correctly. Keep four separate citation buckets so readers can trace every dependency.

Bucket Record Why it matters
Physical facts and constants Original standards body, database, paper, or handbook; retrieval date; edition or version Shows the numerical value and its stated uncertainty or validity range
Methods and equations Paper or authoritative documentation defining the approximation, discretization, or algorithm Shows what the method assumes and where it is valid
Software and data Exact release, DOI, repository tag, or commit; dataset identifier; local modifications Allows the computational artifact to be obtained and inspected
Validation references Analytic result, benchmark, or prior calculation used for comparison Defines the independent standard against which the output was tested

For each entry, record the author or organization, publication year, title, persistent identifier or URL when available, exact version or commit, and the claim it supports. Never ask Astra to “add citations” after the calculation without requiring source verification. A model can produce a plausible-looking but nonexistent reference, so instruct it to say “source unavailable” rather than inventing one.

Save a complete run bundle

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends conveying clear, specific, and complete information about computational methods and data products. Apply that principle by saving a directory or archive containing:

  • The exact prompt, including system-level instructions that affect the calculation and the date of the run.
  • Input files, unit conventions, source snapshots or persistent identifiers, and any preprocessing script.
  • Generated code, configuration files, solver settings, and the dependency lockfile.
  • Model or API identifier, software versions, operating system, hardware architecture, and environment manifest.
  • Raw outputs, plots, logs, warnings, random seeds, and rerun command.
  • Validation report with dimensional, limiting-case, conservation, convergence, benchmark, and sensitivity results.
  • Citation ledger mapping each external claim to its source and version.

Nature Portfolio’s computational-tools guidance calls for validity information, installation instructions and tests, input files, and software-version details when scientific code supports a result. Include a small test suite or smoke test that a new user can run before reproducing the full calculation.

The ASTRA specification provides a useful provenance pattern: store inputs, outputs, methodological choices, and evidence in a structured analysis record so another agent or researcher can inspect and extend the work. Adopt that pattern even when your project does not use the ASTRA software or schema itself.

A practical review-and-rerun workflow

  1. Ask for a restatement. Have Astra rewrite the problem, list knowns and unknowns, identify units, and enumerate missing inputs before doing arithmetic.
  2. Correct the contract. Review every assumption, conversion, boundary condition, and model regime. Edit the prompt rather than silently accepting a default.
  3. Request derivation and code together. Require symbolic equations, intermediate values, executable code, environment details, and a rerun command in one response.
  4. Run outside the chat. Execute the code in a controlled environment. Preserve the exact files, logs, and errors.
  5. Perform independent checks. Compare with an analytic result, benchmark, or alternate implementation; run convergence and sensitivity tests where applicable.
  6. Resolve discrepancies. Investigate units, signs, indexing, boundary conditions, solver tolerances, and source versions. Do not average conflicting answers without finding the cause.
  7. Freeze the record. Save the run bundle and citation ledger. Assign a version or commit so later edits do not overwrite the calculation that was reviewed.
  8. Write the disclosure. State what Astra calculated, which cited sources establish external facts, what tools and model identifier were used, the run date, and which checks passed or failed.

Common failure modes and recovery

Hidden assumptions

Symptom: Astra chooses a geometry, boundary condition, material parameter, or reference frame without highlighting it. Recovery: require an assumption table and a stop condition for any choice that could change the physical conclusion; rerun after supplying the correct value.

Best Value

  • Natural Textbook Display presents formulas and results exactly as written in textbooks for intuitive learning.

Unit and convention errors

Symptom: the final number looks reasonable but mixes unit systems, degrees and radians, gauge and absolute pressure, or incompatible sign conventions. Recovery: require one coherent unit system, explicit conversions, dimensional checks, and assertions in code.

Non-reproducible numerics

Symptom: repeated runs differ because of random sampling, parallel reductions, adaptive solvers, or changed dependencies. Recovery: record seeds and parallel settings, pin versions, tighten tolerances, and compare deterministic single-threaded output with the optimized run.

Unsupported citation

Symptom: a reference cannot be located, or it supports a general law but not the numerical value used. Recovery: mark the claim as unverified, locate the original standard or paper yourself, and update the ledger before publication. Never preserve a fabricated citation because it makes the answer look complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reproduced bug

Symptom: another person obtains the same result, but a benchmark, conservation check, or limiting case fails. Recovery: treat reproducibility as evidence about the software only; debug the model or implementation and rerun the full validation suite.

How much confidence should you place in Astra?

OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most capable model for demanding work and documents support for complex reasoning, coding, computer use, research, and document creation. The announcement reports 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 72.6% on OSWorld 2.0 at roughly 40 minutes per task, both identified as OpenAI results from 2026. Those are broad benchmark measurements, not guarantees for your particular physical system, data, solver, or citation list.

Astra can generate a strong first draft of a derivation, code, test plan, and provenance record. It can also omit a boundary condition, misread a unit, select an invalid approximation, implement an equation incorrectly, or cite a source that does not support the claim. The documented knowledge cutoff of April 30, 2026 is another reason to provide newer constants, papers, datasets, or software releases directly and record their versions.

Use the model’s ability to ask clarifying questions deliberately. Tell it which assumptions are acceptable, which require confirmation, and which would invalidate the calculation. Keep the final scientific judgment with a reviewer who understands the domain and can inspect the code and checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to report an Astra-assisted result

A concise methods note should identify the physical model, assumptions, input provenance, equations, numerical method, software and dependency versions, model or API identifier, run date, and validation procedures. Distinguish sentences such as “Astra calculated the trajectory using the supplied initial conditions” from “the cited standard defines the value of the constant.” State uncertainty or sensitivity, not just a long decimal, and disclose any unavailable source or unperformed test.

Before sharing the result, confirm that a fresh user can obtain the code and inputs, install the recorded environment, run the documented command, reproduce the reported output within tolerance, and see the same validation evidence. Only then is the calculation ready to support a paper, engineering decision, or educational example.
