Build the prompt from content to visual direction
Start with what the image depicts, then add how it should look. A useful structure is:

Cartoon subject and defining features + action or expression + setting and composition + shape language and linework + palette and shading + mood and lighting + background and detail level
For example:

Describe visual traits instead of naming an artist
Translate the look you have in mind into observable properties. For cartoon art, useful dimensions include silhouette, proportions, line weight, geometry, palette, texture, medium, shading, lighting, and composition. Choose a few that work together rather than stacking unrelated adjectives.

Broad art movements such as Bauhaus or Impressionism can be starting points for exploration, but they are less precise than naming the features you want. Adobe’s overview of art styles for AI prompts discusses movements as style directions and describes experimenting with effects and other controls. A movement label should not be treated as permission to reproduce a contemporary artist’s distinctive work.

Use references and controls thoughtfully
If a generator offers style references, select an image you created, have permission to use, or choose from the tool’s curated collection. Direct the generator toward particular qualities—such as color, texture, lighting, or medium—rather than treating a reference as an instruction to reproduce someone else’s signature look.

Iterate by fixing the mismatch you can see
- Write the content first. State the subject, defining features, action or expression, and setting in plain language.
- Add three or four visual properties. For instance, specify silhouette, line quality, palette, and shading.
- Generate an initial set of variations. Treat these as drafts, not proof that the prompt is complete.
- Name the mismatch. Be concrete: “the outlines are too thin,” “the pose feels stiff,” or “the palette is too realistic.”
- Revise that direction directly. Strengthen or replace the relevant phrase, or adjust the matching control if one is available.
- Change only one or two details at a time. Comparing the next outputs makes it easier to see which revision helped.
- Reuse a result as a reference only if you have rights to use it. Apply the same care to generated or uploaded images as to any other reference.
Adobe recommends refining prompt wording and settings when results miss the intended look; its style guidance also describes experimenting with movements, color, lighting, and composition. Those suggestions support an iterative workflow, not a promise of a particular output.

Keep originality separate from legal clearance
A prompt that avoids an artist’s name can still produce an image that resembles existing work, and descriptive wording alone cannot establish who owns an output or whether it is safe for a particular commercial use. The official guidance cited here explains prompting and reference controls; it does not establish legal safety or commercial rights for a specific image, model, or plan. Check the generator’s terms for your exact product and plan, and review the resulting image for unwanted resemblance before using it.
