How to Process a Large URL List into Screenshots with n8n in Batches

For a large URL list, first make sure n8n has one item per URL. Then use Loop Over Items only when you need to control batch size, add a delay, or perform several steps for each group. Capture each URL through an HTTP Request node connected to a screenshot API, save each image as it is produced, and pass file references—not all the image data—through the rest of the workflow.

There is no universal screenshot batch size: images are much larger than the small records covered by n8n’s general workflow guidance. Start with a small pilot, then tune batch size and pacing against the API’s documented limits and your n8n instance’s memory.

Prepare the URL list as n8n items

n8n nodes commonly process incoming items automatically. If the input already contains one item per URL, a screenshot request node can run for each item without an explicit loop. Add a loop for deliberate batching or other controlled multi-step processing—not just to make a node handle multiple items.

When the URLs are already separate items

Pass those items directly to the capture step. Keep each item’s URL attached to its result so that the stored image and any error can be traced to the source record.

When the URLs are inside one array

Use the Split Out node (or an equivalent transformation) to expand the array into individual items before looping. Otherwise, the workflow may treat the array container as one item instead of making a capture request for every URL.

Before scaling up, check the item count after the split and confirm that each item contains the intended URL.

Choose between automatic item processing and explicit batches

Use the simplest workflow that meets the job’s needs:

  • Automatic processing: Best when every URL can go through the same ordinary node sequence and you do not need explicit batch control.
  • Loop Over Items: Use it when you need a defined batch size, a delay between batches, or several connected actions—such as capture, storage, and status recording—for each group.

n8n’s Loop Over Items node was formerly called Split in Batches. Its documentation explains that batching can help manage API rate limits and can be combined with a Wait node. The documentation also says to set Batch Size to 1 to process each item individually; that is a sequential-per-item choice, not a general recommendation for screenshot jobs. See n8n’s Loop Over Items documentation.

Wire the loop path

  1. Connect the incoming URL items to Loop Over Items and set the batch size you want to test.
  2. Connect the loop output to the screenshot request, followed by the storage step and any status or error recording.
  3. Connect the end of that processing path back to the Loop Over Items node so it can continue with the next batch.
  4. Use the node’s done output for final reporting or aggregation after the loop finishes.

If your screenshot endpoint supports an array of URLs in one bulk request, configure the HTTP Request node to make one request per batch. Verify the provider’s documented batch contract first; a node that runs once per item in a batch is not the same as one request containing the whole batch.

Connect n8n to a screenshot API

A hosted screenshot API lets n8n send a URL and capture options over HTTP, then receive an image response. For example, Browserless documents a POST request to its /screenshot endpoint with a URL and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot options. Its documentation also includes an n8n integration example using the HTTP Request node. Consult Browserless’s Screenshot API documentation for current authentication, request limits, and supported options, and its n8n integration examples for the workflow connection pattern.

Configure the HTTP Request node

  • Set the method and endpoint to match the screenshot provider’s current documentation.
  • Keep API tokens in n8n Credentials rather than hard-coding them in workflow fields or expressions. Browserless specifically recommends storing its token in n8n Credentials in its integration example.
  • Map the current item’s URL into the request body or parameters as the endpoint requires.
  • Configure the node to receive the response as a file when appropriate. n8n’s HTTP Request node supports file responses; see the node documentation.

Choose capture settings for the artifact you need

Browserless documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and full-page capture. Choose full-page capture when the entire document matters; use viewport capture when the visible screen is the intended artifact. Full-page images can be large, so account for their size in storage and workflow memory.

Pages do not necessarily render identically on every capture. Authentication requirements, consent screens, page scripts, load timing, and the target site’s own controls can affect what appears. If content loads as the page is scrolled, the capture process may need to scroll first to trigger lazy-loaded sections. Check the provider’s current options before relying on a specific behavior.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Set batch size and pacing conservatively

n8n’s Help Center gives around 100 to 200 small records as a general starting point for large workflows, with adjustments based on payload size, node behavior, memory, and external service limits. That guidance is not a screenshot-specific batch setting: image payloads can be much larger than small records. Start with a small pilot and increase batch size only after checking actual image sizes, workflow memory, and the screenshot API’s limits. See n8n’s large-workflow guidance.

If the provider limits request frequency, use a smaller batch or insert a Wait step between batches. The appropriate interval depends on the endpoint’s current limits; there is no universal delay or throughput figure for this workflow.

Store images as they are captured

Do not accumulate every binary image in a long-running JSON stream or wait until one final aggregation step to save them. Write each image to durable storage as its batch completes, then pass a filename, object key, or other reference through downstream nodes. This keeps later workflow steps focused on compact metadata instead of carrying all the image binaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record at least the original URL, the stored file reference, and the capture status. For failed requests, preserve the URL and error information so you can retry only the affected items rather than rerunning successful captures.

Test before processing the full list

  1. Run a small representative sample that includes both short and long pages, if both occur in your list.
  2. Confirm that splitting produced the expected number of URL items.
  3. Compare each captured result with its source URL and check the selected output format and dimensions.
  4. Open the saved files to verify they are readable and the storage references point to the right objects.
  5. Test how the workflow records errors and resumes or retries failed items.
  6. Increase the workload gradually while observing n8n memory use and any API limit responses.

The available documentation does not establish a universal throughput, guaranteed success rate, or retry policy for screenshot workflows. Measure your own endpoint and workload, and follow the provider’s current limits and terms.

Choose hosted capture or self-managed browser automation

Approach Useful when What to account for
Hosted screenshot API You need ordinary URL-to-image capture through an HTTP Request node. Check authentication, current API limits, supported capture options, and whether the hosted browser can access your target pages. Browserless documents both a screenshot endpoint and an n8n example.
Self-managed Puppeteer You need browser interactions or custom logic that a hosted endpoint does not cover. You are responsible for deployment, browser/runtime availability, maintenance, and saving the resulting image. Puppeteer documents saving a screenshot with Page.screenshot() in its screenshots guide.

The available sources do not establish a total-cost or reliability comparison between these approaches. Choose based on the browser behavior you need and the operational work you can support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Loop Over Items have to be in an n8n screenshot workflow?

No. n8n ordinarily processes incoming items automatically. Add the loop when you need explicit batching, pacing, or a multi-step loop path.

Can I send a batch of URLs in a single screenshot request?

Only if the screenshot API documents a bulk request that accepts an array of URLs. In that case, configure the HTTP Request node to send the batch as one request and follow that endpoint’s contract.

Will every website produce the same screenshot each time?

Not necessarily. Page scripts, authentication, consent screens, load timing, lazy-loaded content, and site controls can change what is visible.
