To keep voice calls responsive while the household is busy, enable your router’s QoS (Quality of Service) feature, choose its VoIP or real-time voice class when available, and give that class higher priority than bulk downloads, streaming, or gaming traffic. If the router cannot identify applications, prioritize the phone’s device or the LAN port it uses. QoS controls competition inside your network; it cannot add internet capacity or repair an upstream ISP problem.

The exact labels and controls depend on the router model, firmware, and QoS implementation. Use the workflow below as a decision guide, then follow the instructions that match the features your interface actually shows.

What QoS changes during a voice call

Quality of Service is a traffic-management function built into many routers, switches, and access points. In NETGEAR’s definition, QoS “prioritizes traffic so that more important traffic can pass first.” A router classifies packets (for example, as voice, video, web, or bulk transfer) or applies a rule to a device or port. When several flows compete for a constrained queue, the selected traffic is served ahead of lower-priority traffic.

That is a relative preference, not a new connection or a second internet circuit. NETGEAR describes its own consumer QoS as “best effort”: high-priority services are not given a 100 percent bandwidth reservation, and lower-priority services are not locked out. Other vendors implement QoS differently, so read the behavior documented for your model instead of assuming that a “high” setting is a guarantee.

Why voice is sensitive to congestion

A voice application sends and receives a continuous, time-sensitive stream. A short queue delay or a burst of competing traffic can be audible as delay, gaps, robotic sound, or talk-over. Prioritizing voice can help when your router is the point where those flows queue. It does not remove radio interference, a failing headset, a saturated access link, or faults beyond your router.

Before changing settings: identify the equipment and the bottleneck

Record the router and firmware

Write down the manufacturer, exact model number, firmware version, and whether you manage it through a browser or a mobile app. Menu names differ even within one product family. A setting documented for one model may not exist on another, and a firmware update can move it.

Confirm what kind of call you are prioritizing

  • Application-based calling: a softphone, conferencing app, or browser call running on a computer or phone.
  • Dedicated VoIP equipment: an IP desk phone or an analogue telephone adapter connected to your LAN.
  • Wi-Fi calling: a phone or handset whose packets still compete for wireless airtime before they reach the router queue.

Knowing the endpoint helps you choose between an application category, a device rule, and a physical-port rule.

Check whether congestion is local

NETGEAR’s guidance says QoS is most likely to help when the router or switch is the bottleneck. It also notes that router QoS is mainly useful for traffic leaving the LAN; incoming traffic has already crossed the ISP network before your router can classify it. If call problems occur when a local computer uploads a large file or several devices download simultaneously, a router queue is a plausible target. If the call is poor with every local device idle, investigate the ISP path, Wi-Fi conditions, the calling service, or the endpoint before relying on QoS.

Find and enable the router’s QoS feature

  1. Open administration. Connect to your home network, sign in to the router’s local web interface or management app, and authenticate with an administrator account.
  2. Search the traffic controls. Look for QoS, Adaptive QoS, Traffic Prioritization, Bandwidth Control, Congestion Control, or a similarly named page. Do not assume that a general “gaming” mode includes voice; inspect the categories and rules.
  3. Enable the feature and select its mode. Some interfaces present a switch followed by a mode such as application priority, device priority, or bandwidth limiter. Apply the mode before creating a rule if the interface requires that order.
  4. Save or apply. Routers commonly restart a traffic service, briefly interrupting flows. Wait for the interface to confirm the change before testing a call.

ASUS documents this workflow for Adaptive QoS: enable the function, choose a mode, apply it, and customize the priority order where supported. Its interface lists VoIP as an application category. Those labels describe ASUS implementations; another router may expose different categories or none at all.

Choose the right priority rule

1. Application or traffic-category priority

Use an application rule when the router can recognize the call traffic. Select VoIP, Voice, or a real-time category that explicitly includes voice, then move it above bulk transfer, ordinary web traffic, or other lower-priority classes. ASUS Adaptive QoS explicitly lists VoIP and permits custom ordering.

Classification is not universal. Encrypted applications, unusual ports, browser-based calls, and vendor-specific protocols may not match a generic category. After applying the rule, verify that the call application appears in the router’s traffic list or statistics, if the interface provides one. If it remains unclassified, use a device or port rule instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Device priority

A device rule gives preference to all traffic from a selected phone, computer, or IP desk phone. This is useful when the router cannot identify the application but can reliably identify the endpoint by its name, MAC address, or assigned IP address. The trade-off is scope: downloads, updates, and unrelated activity from that device may receive the same preference as the call.

Reserve or document the device’s address if your router changes addresses frequently. A DHCP reservation keeps a device rule attached to the intended endpoint, but the exact reservation control is model-specific. Do not prioritize an entire household device group unless you intend to elevate every flow from those devices.

3. LAN-port priority

A wired IP phone or analogue telephone adapter can sometimes be prioritized by the Ethernet port to which it is connected. NETGEAR documents upstream rules for Ethernet LAN ports on supported Nighthawk models. This approach covers everything entering that port, so it is predictable for a dedicated phone but overly broad if a switch on the port serves several devices. Check the exact model list in the vendor documentation before expecting the option to appear.

4. Bandwidth shaping or congestion control

Some routers combine priority rules with a limiter. You enter the available upload and download capacity, and the router shapes queues so that congestion occurs under its control rather than at an unmanaged upstream link. NETGEAR documents entering upload and download rates, or running a router benchmark, for its DumaOS congestion-control feature. Its “Always” congestion-control option reduces total throughput by design; that behavior is specific to the documented feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter accurate upload and download capacity

If the interface asks for bandwidth, use the service’s actual capacity in the correct direction. Upload and download are separate values; do not copy the download number into both fields. Include the unit the router requests (for example, megabits per second) and check whether it expects the subscribed rate, a measured rate, or a benchmark result.

ASUS advises asking the ISP for the maximum bandwidth used by its limiter and says the device limit must be below that maximum to constrain the link. A value above the true capacity leaves the physical bottleneck outside the router, where its queue cannot manage it. A value set unnecessarily low can reduce throughput for every household device. There is no universal voice percentage established by the vendor guidance, so do not apply a fixed number simply because it is common in an online tutorial.

A practical way to obtain a starting value

  1. Pause other heavy traffic and run several speed measurements at different times of day, or use the router’s own capacity test when it offers one.
  2. Record separate typical upload and download results, noting whether the service rate varies by time or access technology.
  3. Enter values that are below the ISP maximum when the router requires a shaping ceiling, following the router’s units and instructions.
  4. Apply the setting, place voice above bulk classes, and test under load. Change one value at a time so you can identify which change affects the call and household throughput.

These steps establish a controlled queue; they do not promise a particular latency, jitter, or call-quality improvement.

Control type Documented example What it prioritizes Important limitation
Application classification ASUS Adaptive QoS lists VoIP and allows custom priority ordering. Traffic identified as the selected application category across wired and wireless devices. A category may not recognize every calling application or encrypted flow.
Device or port rule NETGEAR documents upstream Ethernet-LAN-port rules on supported Nighthawk models; supported Nighthawk Pro Gaming models document device and application allocation. All traffic from the selected device or everything arriving through the selected port, depending on the rule. Support is model-specific, and a broad rule can elevate non-voice traffic too.
Bandwidth shaping NETGEAR documents upload/download entry or a router benchmark for its DumaOS congestion-control feature. Queues shaped around the capacity values so the router controls congestion. The “Always” option reduces total bandwidth; incorrect capacity values can waste throughput or leave the upstream queue unmanaged.

Test the change without confusing the result

  1. Choose a repeatable call destination or test contact and note the symptoms you are trying to change: one-way audio, clipping, delay, or dropouts.
  2. Start the call with ordinary network use stopped. Confirm that the endpoint, headset, and Wi-Fi signal work before introducing congestion.
  3. Have another device perform the activity that normally triggers trouble, such as a large upload, cloud synchronization, or a download. Use realistic household traffic rather than an extreme benchmark alone.
  4. Watch the router’s QoS or traffic page, if available, to confirm that the voice application, device, or port is matching the intended rule.
  5. Repeat the call with the rule disabled, then enabled, while keeping the other conditions as similar as possible. Change only one setting between attempts.

This is a troubleshooting method, not a guarantee that QoS will improve every call. Keep notes on the router mode, capacity values, endpoint, and concurrent activity so you can undo a change that worsens other users’ performance.

What QoS can and cannot fix

Situations in which it can help

  • A local upload or download fills the router’s queue while a voice call is active.
  • Several household devices compete for a constrained access link managed by the same router.
  • The router can correctly classify the voice application or consistently identify the phone device or wired port.
  • A shaping feature can keep the queue inside the router instead of allowing an upstream modem or ISP queue to dominate.

Situations in which it is not the remedy

  • ISP or internet-path congestion: NETGEAR states that router QoS cannot fix an internet connection that is itself the bottleneck.
  • Wi-Fi interference or weak signal: prioritization does not create radio airtime or correct channel interference. Test the call on a wired endpoint where practical.
  • Endpoint faults: a damaged headset, overloaded phone, bad Ethernet cable, or malfunctioning calling app needs its own repair.
  • Service-side problems: a failure at the VoIP provider, remote office, or peer can produce poor audio even when your local queues are clear.
  • Misclassification: a high-priority rule has no effect if the router never matches the call traffic.

Because QoS is relative and often best-effort, it should not be described as reserved voice bandwidth. The reviewed vendor guidance provides no universal promise of lower latency, lower jitter, or perfect audio after enabling a priority.

Troubleshoot common failures

The QoS page has no VoIP option

Check for a real-time or custom application category. If none exists, identify whether the router supports device or LAN-port priority. A dedicated wired phone is a good candidate for a port rule; a softphone may be easier to handle with a device rule. If the firmware offers no usable classification or rule, QoS on that router cannot target the call precisely.

The rule is enabled but the call still breaks up

Verify that the endpoint is the one named in the rule, that its address has not changed, and that the call traffic appears in the matching category. Confirm upload and download values if shaping is enabled. Then test with the heavy local activity stopped. If the call remains poor without congestion, move investigation to Wi-Fi, the endpoint, the calling service, or the ISP path rather than continually raising the priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other devices become unusably slow

Review whether you prioritized an entire device or port instead of only the voice application. Check for an overly low shaping ceiling or an “Always” congestion-control mode that intentionally reduces total bandwidth. Lower-priority traffic should remain usable; NETGEAR’s best-effort description specifically rejects locking it out.

The setting disappears after a firmware update

Recheck the model’s current administration interface and confirm that the feature is enabled. Export or record the previous rules before updating firmware when the router permits it. Do not copy menu instructions from a different hardware revision without verifying compatibility.

When replacing equipment is worth considering

A replacement is relevant only when the current router lacks a voice/application rule, device or port priority, or workable shaping controls that match your congestion pattern. ASUS documentation for the RT-AX57 manual shows Adaptive QoS presets including VoIP, demonstrating that this feature exists in current consumer-router categories; it does not establish availability, pricing, or a need to replace a working router. First confirm that the bottleneck is local and that your current firmware cannot provide an adequate rule.

Safe operating checklist

  • Record the exact model and firmware before editing.
  • Use VoIP or an explicitly voice-inclusive real-time category when the router offers one.
  • Otherwise target the phone’s device or a dedicated wired LAN port, understanding that the rule may cover all of its traffic.
  • Enter separate, accurate upload and download capacities; keep a shaping ceiling below the ISP maximum when the vendor requires that.
  • Apply one change at a time and test with the same kind of household load that causes the problem.
  • Keep lower-priority traffic functional and undo rules that starve other users.
  • If the call is poor without local congestion, investigate Wi-Fi, endpoints, the calling service, or the ISP rather than expecting QoS to solve it.
